  • Why does the login screen fail to appear?

    - by a different ben
My system: Dell Precision T3500 nVidia Quadro NVS 295 Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 (3.2.0-32) Essential problem: On boot my system won't get past the splash screen. I can switch to another virtual terminal and log in, I can also ssh from another system -- so it appears that the problem might be with the display manager. How can I diagnose and fix this problem? More info: From a VT I can issue sudo lightdm restart, and this will bring up the login screen and and I can continue from there. So I do have access to my system. Update-manager recently updated a number of packages, including a bunch of x11 and xorg packages, some nVidia drivers, rpcbind, etc etc. My boot log (if that is any guidance) says the following: fsck from util-linux 2.20.1 fsck from util-linux 2.20.1 fsck from util-linux 2.20.1 fsck from util-linux 2.20.1 rpcbind: Cannot open '/run/rpcbind/rpcbind.xdr' file for reading, errno 2 (No such file or directory) rpcbind: Cannot open '/run/rpcbind/portmap.xdr' file for reading, errno 2 (No such file or directory) /dev/sda1: clean, 597650/1525920 files, 3963433/6103296 blocks /dev/sda7: clean, 11/6406144 files, 450097/25608703 blocks /dev/sda5: clean, 158323/1525920 files, 1886918/6103296 blocks /dev/sda8: clean, 250089/107929600 files, 111088810/431689728 blocks Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.sbin.rsyslogd * Starting AppArmor profiles [80G [74G[ OK ] Loading the saved-state of the serial devices... /dev/ttyS0 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A * Starting ClamAV virus database updater freshclam [80G [74G[ OK ] * Starting Name Service Cache Daemon nscd [80G [74G[ OK ] * Starting modem connection manager[74G[ OK ] * Starting K Display Manager[74G[ OK ] * Starting mDNS/DNS-SD daemon[74G[ OK ] * Stopping GNOME Display Manager[74G[ OK ] * Stopping K Display Manager[74G[ OK ] * Starting bluetooth daemon[74G[ OK ] * Starting network connection manager[74G[ OK ] * Starting Postfix Mail Transport Agent postfix [80G [74G[ OK ] speech-dispatcher disabled; edit /etc/default/speech-dispatcher * Starting VirtualBox kernel modules [80G [74G[ OK ] * Starting the Winbind daemon winbind [80G [74G[ OK ] saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned * Starting anac(h)ronistic cron[74G[ OK ] * Stopping anac(h)ronistic cron[74G[ OK ] * Checking battery state... • WiFi on Ubuntu 12.04 custom: downloading unbearably slow

    - by Mark
iwconfig reports 11 Mbps, yet I've seen as low as <1 KBps. This is the latest in my laundry list of Ubuntu problems in a dual-boot machine (cyberpowerpc custom, intel i7-3820, nvidia gtx 570). I received it two days ago, Windows 7 running fine, still having problems with Ubuntu. The browsing is intermittent but unacceptable. e.g. I could get to this site last night but I couldn't post this question. The downloading is unbearably slow, I can't download anything or install any packages because the speed is so slow. e.g. I am trying to install vim which is inexplicably missing from my 12.04 install (add another one to the problems list) and my download speed reported in the terminal was 241 B/s. Yes, bytes. iwconfig reports 11 Mbps, which further adds to the confusion. User@ubuntu:~$ iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"linksys" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:18:39:76:2C:A1 Bit Rate=11 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off Link Quality=36/70 Signal level=-74 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:54 Invalid misc:18 Missed beacon:0 eth0 no wireless extensions. Any ideas? I see this is a problem a lot of people, but none of the on line solutions have worked for me so far. e.g. one site recommends editing the ath9k.conf file in /etc/modprobe.d, yet this file isn't even in the folder: User@ubuntu:/$ cd etc/modprobe.d User@ubuntu:/etc/modprobe.d$ ls alsa-base.conf blacklist-oss.conf blacklist-ath_pci.conf blacklist-rare-network.conf blacklist.conf blacklist-watchdog.conf blacklist-firewire.conf dkms.conf blacklist-framebuffer.conf nvidia-current_hybrid.conf blacklist-modem.conf nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf I think the nvidia gpu might be mucking things up. I had the "blinking cursor" problem when installing in the first place, and then I had the monitor out of range problem as well. I have my faithful Asus laptop, which is running Ubuntu 12.04 just fine. The only difference is executing host -t SOA local in the terminal gives User@ubuntu:~$ host -t SOA local local has SOA record local. nobody.localhost. 42 86400 43200 604800 10800 in my new machine, and the command reports Host local. not found in the laptop. Help would be most welcome, as I am in danger of reverting back to Windows. I'm seriously considering it. Sorry for the length, trying to show my effort in resolving the issue and include terminal snippets that might be helpful.

  • Port forwarding on Fortigate 50B

    - by sindre j
I have serious problems setting up port forwarding on a Fortigate 50B. The unit is basically running as factory default, the wan1 interface is connected to my fibre optic internet modem, and my lan is connected to the internal switch of the Fortigate. The factory default firewall policy allowing traffic from the internal interface to wan1 is kept and I'm able to access the interet as normal. Then I added a virtual ip and a firewall policy for allowing access from the internet to my local servers (ip 192.168.9.51) webserver (standard port 80). The settings I made are as follows. Edit Virtual IP Mapping Name : Server VIP External interface : wan1 Type : Static NAT Extermal IP Address/Range : 0.0.0.0 Mapped IP Address/Range : 192.168.9.51 Port Forwading : not checked Firewall policy Source interface/Zone : wan1 Source address : all Destination interface/Zone : internal Destination address : Server VIP Schedule : always Service : HTTP Action : ACCEPT no other settings checked What happens now is that I'm unable to access internet from my server, I'm not getting through to the webserver from internet either. I'm able to ping a site on the outside, but all web traffic is blocked, both ways. I've checked the documentation, but as far as I can tell I have set this up correctly. Anyone here with knowledge of Fortigate port forwading/NAT?

  • Connecting to ItsHidden in Ubuntu 9.10 problems

I try to setup a VPN connection to ItsHidden on Ubuntu 9.10. I double-checked my credentials in the VPN configuration, but I don't think that this is problem. • NetBSD Networking

    - by Mike
Hello, everyone! I have an old Toshiba Satellite 4015CDT, with Pentium II MMX, 32MB RAM, 4GB HDD. It also has one USB 1.0 port, parallel and serial ports, a 3.5" floppy drive and a CD-ROM drive (probably almost dead). I've installed NetBSD on this machine (full install) and now I want to connect it to the Internet. Although it has one PCMCIA modem card in it, it is obviously not an option. I've narrowed down my available options to the following: Connect a USB wireless adapter. I have a Realtek RTL8192 adapter, but although the system gives me the device's name (through dmesg) it fails to recognize it as a network adapter. Connect the laptop to another machine through a serial connection, so that the other machine will serve as a bridge to the Internet. Here is the page from the NetBSD documentation on serial connections. Unfortunately, I was not able to find anything on bridging there. I would very much appreciate your suggestions on the topic. Thanks in advance.

  • Can connect through Watchguard mobile VPN, but can't ping or access network drives

    - by johnnyb10
We're having any issue in which some of our employess can no longer connect to our network drives when out of the office. We use Watchguard Mobile VPN (we have a Watchguard Firebox firewall) and the users are able to connect. That is, their status in the the VPN client says "Connected" and they have the correct IP address listed as the VPN Endpoint. The problem is, when they try to map drives, or even ping the IP address of a server on our network, it fails. Last week, we temporarily switched one of our Comcast modems to our backup DSL modem because the Comcast was accidentally shut off by Comcast, and the problem seemed to start around then. We've since switched back and the problem persists, so that doesn't seem to have been it (which makes sense). But we also made other changes at the time that might have thrown something off, although we feel like we've checked them all. Plus, some people can successfully connect to network drives through the VPN. Can someone please suggest some steps to help troubleshoot? We've checked the policies on our Watchguard box, and they seem fine. We've looked at the settings on the Mobile VPN client, but nothing seems like a probable cause. Thanks.

  • Cisco SR520w FE - WAN Port Stops Working

    - by Mike Hanley
I have setup a Cisco SR520W and everything appears to be working. After about 1-2 days, it looks like the WAN port stops forwarding traffic to the Internet gateway IP of the device. If I unplug and then plug in the network cable connecting the WAN port of the SR520W to my Comcast Cable Modem, traffic startings flowing again. Also, if I restart the SR520W, the traffic will flow again. Any ideas? • Why are UDP messages from outside the network received but not delivered?

I have an Ubuntu Server 10.04 application I've developed that receives messages over a UDP port. The ultimate purpose of this application is to receive messages sent from workers' 3G modems out in the field. If use netcat on either another ubuntu Server or my Vista laptop (both on the same LAN as my test machine) to send a message, the message arrives correctly and appears in my application. However, if I go out to my car and use its 3G modem to send a message from the same Vista laptop, it doesn't work. If I run tcpdump -A, I see the message arrive correctly, but it's never delivered to my application. Clearly, the OS is the one making the choice not to deliver the messages (else they wouldn't appear in tcpdump nor would my app receive them when coming from local machines). I have not installed any firewall software on this machine, nor am I aware of anything installed by default that would block the traffic. sudo iptables --list returns Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination I'm not too familiar with iptables, but it looks to me like that's telling it to not do anything. What could be going on that's preventing my messages from being delivered?

  • Ingress filtering in Linux traffic control: Redirect traffic to IFB device

    - by Dani Camps
I have an openwrt router and I want to shape incoming traffic in order to classify all the traffic addressed to a certain IP address in my home network as low priority. For that purpose I want to redirect all traffic incoming to the eth1 interface, the one connected to the DSL modem, to an IFB device where I will do the shaping. These are the details of my system: Linux OpenWrt 2.6.32.27 #7 Fri Jul 15 02:43:34 CEST 2011 mips GNU/Linux Here is the script I am using where the last instruction is failing: # Variable definition ETH=eth1 IFB=ifb1 IP_LP="192.168.1.22/32" DL_RATE="900kbps" HP_RATE="890kbps" LP_RATE="10kbps" TC="tc" # Configuring the ifbX interface insmod ifb insmod sch_htb insmod sch_ingress ifconfig $IFB up # Adding the HTB scheduler to the ingress interface $TC qdisc add dev $IFB root handle 1: htb default 11 # Set the maximum bandwidth that each priority class can get, and the maximum borrowing they can do $TC class add dev $IFB parent 1:1 classid 1:10 htb rate $LP_RATE ceil $DL_RATE $TC class add dev $IFB parent 1:1 classid 1:11 htb rate $HP_RATE ceil $DL_RATE # Redirect all ingress traffic arriving at $ETH to $IFB $TC qdisc del dev $ETH ingress 2>/dev/null $TC qdisc add dev $ETH ingress $TC filter add dev $ETH parent ffff: protocol ip prio 1 u32 \ match u32 0 0 flowid 1:1 \ action mirred egress redirect dev $IFB The last instruction fails with: Action 4 device ifb1 ifindex 9 RTNETLINK answers: No such file or directory We have an error talking to the kernel Does anyone know what am I doing wrong ? • Router slowing my connection?

    - by Roberto
I have a Linksys WRT54G and I pay for a 12Mbps connection. I've been testing my connection using speedtest.net for many days and always get 8Mbps. I called the support and they told me to bypass the router and test. I did it and got 16Mbps (much more than I pay for), so I thought "this guy just changed my speed so can he blame my router", and he blamed it. But to my surprise, everytime I bypass the router I get 16Mbps and when I use the router I get 8Mbps. Is this guy trolling me somehow (configuring the VOIP-modem-stuff to different profiles depending o the MAC address connecting to it) or is my router a POS? How can I find out? I don't know what's the thing the router connects to, it's a kind of VOIP adapter; the link is this one, but unfortunately I don't think you'll understand because it's in Portuguese. I know they can remotely connect to it, that's the origin of my conspiracy theory :) I just tested wired to the router and got 10Mbps (and still 8Mbps on wifi and 16Mbps without router) O_o I'm 5cm away from my router, so no obstacles to interfere, right? ------ UPDATE ------- It's a WRT54G V8, I'm using firmware v8.00.7 (will install 8.00.8 tomorrow, but I saw that it's only a minor fix to UPnP denial of service security vulnerability). Results: IPerf LAN-LAN: 80Mbps IPerf LAN-WLAN: 19Mbps (therefore we can ignore wireless issues/settings) I wasn't able to make the (W)LAN-WAN NAT-enabled test with IPerf, I get a connection refused error. I'm not sure if did it right: ran in server mode, configured router to forward that port to my IP and tried to connect to my internet IP that got from this site. I don't think there is a way to disable NAT using this firmware. Question: Let's suppose it's an underpowered hardware issue. Is it right to assume that custom firmwares could resolve the issue because they are possibly better implemented and would make better use of the router resources? I couldn't find any references pointing to wired performance improvements with the use of custom firmware.

  • How to detect non-graceful disconnect of Twisted on Linux?

    - by Victor Lin
I wrote a server based on Twisted, and I encountered a problem, some of the clients are disconnected not gracefully. For example, the user pulls out the network cable. For a while, the client on Windows is disconnected (the connectionLost is called, and it is also written in Twisted). And on the Linux server side, my connectionLost of twisted is never triggered. Even it try to writes data to client, but the connection is lost. Why Twisted can't detect those non-graceful disconnection (even write data to client) on Linux? How to makes Twisted detect non-graceful disconnections? Because the feature Twisted can't detect non-graceful, I have lots of zombie user on my server. Thanks. Victor Lin.

  • RTL8192SU Linux Issue Installing Driver

    - by s32ialx
OK I've read tons of fourms of people getting the onboard RTL8192SE working and the RTL8192SU working dif is U = USB they are both N and i have both Toshiba L500D-00T pre-installed Win Vistax64-HP and i have obtained the free Win7x64-HP upgrade the onboard wificard sucks and can't hold a stable connection for more then 20minutes in windows but the usb is amazing. Now problem is i tried both Ubuntu and Mandriva with no resolve the issue is the onboard drive detects and actually SHOWS that it's there but no wireless networks detect so it's saying no SSID's are broadcasting which i know is a lie since I'm running a 2wire bell dsl modem with built in wifi and a Linksys wrt54g w/ DD-WRT firmware and both are broadcasting fine. Why don't i use the USB? In the hardware device manager in mandriva it shows up as unknown but shows that it's realtek and that it's a 8192 chipset. but no option to for a driver install and when i do a make in terminal i get this error and no clue what it means [root@John-PC rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1020.2009_64bit]# make make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-desktop-3mnb/build: No such file or directory. • Can't view other computers on Network

    - by Darkart
Systems: My Machine: Windows 7 Ultimate connected through ethernet into router Her Machine--Other Machine: Windows 7 Ultimate connected through wireless Router:F5D8236-4 N Wireless Router Version 1 Firmware: 2.01.03 (Apr 28 2009) ISP: Comcast Problem: I can not view the "Other Machine" on the network at all. I opened command prompt and ran net view and saw the pc name. I tried pinging the pc and it times out. Went inside the router and tried viewing the computer on the DHCP list and it can not be seen. I restored the router back to default settings and firmware and completely reset the modem and router, and created home group. I went to the other machine to configure home group settings and made sure that both PC's had identical settings. She was able to see my machine but I could not see hers. I restarted both machines and now we cant see each other at all. Also her PC ("Other Machine") had exclamation mark in the wireless icon but was connected just fine. There is no firewalls on currently or anti-virus enabled, and still can not see each other. Right now I am checking for updated drivers for the wireless card, but my question is could it be the router or something hardware related? I have went through all the settings in the Home group and visited most FAQ's and still no luck. Also as it stands I can not view her machine inside the router DHCP Client List :(

  • Linux Kernel Packet Forwarding Performance

    - by Bob Somers
I've been using a Linux box as a router for some time now. Nothing too fancy, just enabling forwarding in the kernel, turning on masquerading, and setting up iptables to poke a few holes in the firewall. Recently a friend of mine pointed out a performance problem. Single TCP connections seem to experience very poor performance. You have to open multiple parallel TCP connections to get decent speed. For example, I have a 10 Mbit internet connection. When I download a file from a known-fast source using something like the DownThemAll! extension for Firefox (which opens multiple parallel TCP connections) I can get it to max out my downstream bandwidth at around 1 MB/s. However, when I download the same file using the built-in download manager in Firefox (uses only a single TCP connection) it starts fast and the speed tanks until it tops out around 100 KB/s to 350 KB/s. I've checked the internal network and it doesn't seem to have any problems. Everything goes through a 100 Mbit switch. I've also run iperf both internally (from the router to my desktop) and externally (from my desktop to a Linux box I own out on the net) and haven't seen any problems. It tops out around 1 MB/s like it should. Speedtest.net also reports 10 Mbits speeds. The load on the Linux machine is around 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 all the time, and it's got plenty of free RAM. It's an older laptop with a Pentium M 1.6 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM. The internal network is connected to the built in Intel NIC and the cable modem is connected to a Netgear FA511 32-bit PCMCIA network card. I think the problem is with the packet forwarding in the router, but I honestly am not sure where the problem could be. Is there anything that would substantially slow down a single TCP stream?

  • How can I add a wireless router to a wired router?

    - by Tester101
The Setup: wired D-link (EBR-2310) router connected to my cable modem. Wireless NetGear N300 (WNR2000v3) router connected to a LAN port on the wired router. What I'm trying to do: I'm trying to setup the wireless router to be a separate network, that only accesses the internet through the wired router. What I've done so far. I setup the wireless router's WAN port to get an address from ISP (which should be coming from my wired router running DHCP), and the LAN as a subnet (192.168.1). Wired router's LAN is 192.168.0. The problem: I'm not able to connect to the internet from the wireless router. At one point my wired router showed that it was handing out an IP to the wireless router, but that is not happening anymore. The question: Is what I'm trying to do possible? Am I not thinking about this properly? Do I need to buy a better wired router, with 2 WAN ports? How can I configure these routers to work together?

  • client flips between internal and external IP addresses??

    - by jmiller-miramontes
I have what seems like a not-particularly-complicated home network, all things considered: a DSL line comes in to a modem/router, which goes off to a switch, which supports a bunch of machines. My machines live in a 192.168.0.x address space; however, I'm running some public servers on the network, so I have a block of 8 (5, really) static IP addresses that are mapped to the servers by the router. The non-servers get 192.168.0.x addresses via NAT; some machines have static addresses and some get addresses from DHCP. Locally, I'm running a DNS server (named) to map between the domain names and the 192.168 address space. Somewhat messy, but everything basically works. Except: One of my local non-server clients occasionally switches from its internal address to its external address. That is, if I check the logs of a website I'm running internally, the hits coming from this client sometimes show up with the internal 192.168 address, and sometimes with the external (216.103...) address. It will flip back and forth for no apparent reason, without my doing anything. This can be a problem in terms of how the clients interact with the way I have some of the clients' SSH systems configured (e.g., allowing access from the internal network but not the external network), but it also Just Seems Wrong. I will confess that I'm kinda skating on the very edge of my networking competence here, but I can't for the life of me figure out what's going on. If it helps, the client in question is running Mac OS X / 10.6; its address is statically assigned, is not one of the five externally-accessible addresses, and gets its DNS from (first) the internal DNS server and (second) my ISP's DNS servers. I can't swear that none of the other NAT clients are also showing this problem; the one I'm dealing with is my everyday machine, so this is where I run into it. Does anybody out there have any advice? This is driving me crazy...

  • Cannot access SMC8014WG-SI provided by TimeWarner/RoadRunner administrative interface...

    - by Matt Rogish
I just received installation of RoadRunner internet/TV/Voice and I was given a wi-fi router from the TimeWarner folks. The model is a SMC SMC8014WG-SI. Unfortunately, the password it uses is WEP and that is, as we all know, completely insecure. The tech that was here didn't know how to change it to something like WPA2 w/TKIP, and I was on hold for 20 minutes with the TimeWarner folks before I gave up. My problem is that the default web interface (http://192.168.0.1) isn't responding. I can ping it, I can access the internet through it, but I can't get to the admin interface. I did a "hard reset" of the device but still no dice. My suspicion is that the wi-fi admin interface is disabled (a common setting) but the wired interface isn't working on either of my two laptops (I've tried two laptops with two different cables, no link light activated). Am I SOL? Did they lock this down so I can't do what I want to do? Worst-case is I just hook up my go-to WRT54G router to the other modem and leave this one turned off, but I'd rather use their hardware to avoid any "It's not our problem" in the future. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

But on that address I just get The connection was reset The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. from Firefox. I am using a DSL modem (Westell) and Linksys wireless router (using DHCP). When I use my neighbor's wireless connection I can access the microsoft site without a problem. • I can't download or stream for more then 3 sec, and then the conection activity just dies

    - by JMHein
Just got a new internet connection installed at my sisters place, but it randomly just stops working. At first it was only affecting flash videos. they would randomly just stop buffering. I did a lot of research on this and found that there can be many things that cause this exact trouble. I then tried IE and some flash would stream fine, but still random deaths. So I told my brother in law to reset the router and modem and that fixed the problem for them but not my laptop. I then started trying to fix the flash problem only to fined that downloads of any kind were affected. Now it is so bad that 50% of page loads will never finish because the connection drops to 0% usage with in a split sec. I can't get flash reinstalled because the installer is trying to download but the download dies at 8% I tried up loading a large file by FTP to a web server with no troubles. Yet any activity on my end that takes longer then about 1 sec to finish, just never finishes I can watch the network log in the taskmanager and it spikes for ruffly one sec then drops back to zero and when I go back to the web page it says it is still loading and no matter how long I let it sit it never does any thing more till I reload then it will again create a very short spike of activity on the connection and then drop to zero. Also if I start a download and it does drop off I can restart the download where it left off and get up to 100Kb/s for around the same one sec then it drops to around 14Kb/s then zero a sec latter... I am running Win 7 home prem x64 with FF11 and IE8 I have simply tried every thing I can short of calling up the ISP which very likely will get me no where fast. any advice on what step to take to figure this out would be nice. I am not even sure it is not just an ISP problem. (at least I should be able to get flash reinstalled once I get back home)

  • Inbound SIP calls through Cisco 881 NAT hang up after a few seconds

    - by MasterRoot24
I've recently moved to a Cisco 881 router for my WAN link. I was previously using a Cisco Linksys WAG320N as my modem/router/WiFi AP/NAT firewall. The WAG320N is now running in bridged mode, so it's simply acting as a modem with one of it's LAN ports connected to FE4 WAN on my Cisco 881. The Cisco 881 get's a DHCP provided IP from my ISP. My LAN is part of default Vlan 1 (192.168.1.0/24). General internet connectivity is working great, I've managed to setup static NAT rules for my HTTP/HTTPS/SMTP/etc. services which are running on my LAN. I don't know whether it's worth mentioning that I've opted to use NVI NAT (ip nat enable as opposed to the traditional ip nat outside/ip nat inside) setup. My reason for this is that NVI allows NAT loopback from my LAN to the WAN IP and back in to the necessary server on the LAN. I run an Asterisk 1.8 PBX on my LAN, which connects to a SIP provider on the internet. Both inbound and outbound calls through the old setup (WAG320N providing routing/NAT) worked fine. However, since moving to the Cisco 881, inbound calls drop after around 10 seconds, whereas outbound calls work fine. The following message is logged on my Asterisk PBX: [Dec 9 15:27:45] WARNING[27734]: chan_sip.c:3641 retrans_pkt: Retransmission timeout reached on transmission [email protected] for seqno 1 (Critical Response) -- See https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions Packet timed out after 6528ms with no response [Dec 9 15:27:45] WARNING[27734]: chan_sip.c:3670 retrans_pkt: Hanging up call [email protected] - no reply to our critical packet (see https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions). (I know that this is quite a common issue - I've spend the best part of 2 days solid on this, trawling Google.) I've done as I am told and checked https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions. Referring to the section "Other SIP requests" in the page linked above, I believe that the hangup to be caused by the ACK from my SIP provider not being passed back through NAT to Asterisk on my PBX. I tried to ascertain this by dumping the packets on my WAN interface on the 881. I managed to obtain a PCAP dump of packets in/out of my WAN interface. Here's an example of an ACK being reveived by the router from my provider: 689 21.219999 193.x.x.x 188.x.x.x SIP 502 Request: ACK sip:[email protected] | However a SIP trace on the Asterisk server show's that there are no ACK's received in response to the 200 OK from my PBX: http://pastebin.com/wwHpLPPz In the past, I have been strongly advised to disable any sort of SIP ALGs on routers and/or firewalls and the many posts regarding this issue on the internet seem to support this. However, I believe on Cisco IOS, the config command to disable SIP ALG is no ip nat service sip udp port 5060 however, this doesn't appear to help the situation. To confirm that config setting is set: Router1#show running-config | include sip no ip nat service sip udp port 5060 Another interesting twist: for a short period of time, I tried another provider. Luckily, my trial account with them is still available, so I reverted my Asterisk config back to the revision before I integrated with my current provider. I then dialled in to the DDI associated with the trial trunk and the call didn't get hung up and I didn't get the error above! To me, this points at the provider, however I know, like all providers do, will say "There's no issues with our SIP proxies - it's your firewall." I'm tempted to agree with this, as this issue was not apparent with the old WAG320N router when it was doing the NAT'ing. I'm sure you'll want to see my running-config too: ! ! • special case ssh connection lag

    - by Hersheezy
Setup We have a DMZ and LAN in our office that are connected to the outside with the following setup: +------+ | |------> LAN (normal office router) |Modem | | |------> DMZ (a single machine) +------+ Our internet account is with Comcast and we have 5 status IPs, one of which points to the single machine in the DMZ. Problem ssh connections initiated ANYWHERE EXCEPT the office LAN are really fast. However, from the LAN, there is about a 5 second delay. WTF?? Extra info The DMZ machine is debian 5. Executing a wget to the DMZ has no lag. When executing the following, everything up to HERE IS WHERE THE LAG IS INCURRED executes immediately. ssh -vvvv [email protected] ... debug2: set_newkeys: mode 1 debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug3: Wrote 16 bytes for a total of 1015 debug2: set_newkeys: mode 0 debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug3: Wrote 48 bytes for a total of 1063 debug2: service_accept: ssh-userauth debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug2: key: /home/shopkins/.ssh/id_rsa (0x22440830) debug2: key: /home/shopkins/.ssh/identity ((nil)) debug2: key: /home/shopkins/.ssh/id_dsa ((nil)) debug3: Wrote 64 bytes for a total of 1127` HERE IS WHERE THE LAG IS INCURRED debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey, password debug3: start over, passed a different list publickey, password debug3: preferred gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic,gssapi,publickey,keyboard-interactive,password debug3: authmethod_lookup publickey debug3: remaining preferred: keyboard-interactive,password debug3: authmethod_is_enabled publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering public key: /home/shopkins/.ssh/id_rsa debug3: send_pubkey_test debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply debug3: Wrote 368 bytes for a total of 1495 debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey, password debug1: Trying private key: /home/shopkins/.ssh/identity debug3: no such identity: /home/shopkins/.ssh/identity debug1: Trying private key: /home/shopkins/.ssh/id_dsa debug3: no such identity: /home/shopkins/.ssh/id_dsa debug2: we did not send a packet, disable method debug3: authmethod_lookup password debug3: remaining preferred: ,password debug3: authmethod_is_enabled password debug1: Next authentication method: password [email protected]'s password:

  • Port forwarding for samba

    - by EternallyGreen
Alright, here's the setup: Internet - Modem - WRT54G - hubs - winxp workstations & linux smb server. Its basically a home-style distributed internet connection setup, except its at a school. What I want is remote, offsite smb access. I figured I'd need to find out which ports need forwarding and then forward them to the server on the router. I'm told in another question on SF that multiple ports will need forwarding, and it gets somewhat complicated. One of the things I need to know is which ports require forwarding for this, and what complications or vulnerabilities could arise from this. Any additional information you think I should have before doing this would be great. I'm told SMB doesn't support encryption, which is fine. Given I set up authentication/access control, all this means is that once one of my users authenticates and starts downloading data, the unencrypted traffic could be intercepted and read by a MITM, correct? Given that that's the only problem arising from lack of encryption, this is of no concern to me. I suppose that it could also mean a MITM injecting false data into the data stream, eg: user requests file A, MITM intercepts and replaces the contents of file A with some false data. This isn't really an issue either, because my users would know that something was wrong, and its not likely anyone would have incentive to do this anyway. Another thing I've been informed of is Microsoft's poor implementation of SMB, and its crap track record for security. Does this apply if only the client-end is MS? My server is linux.

  • Ubuntu server PPTPD with OS X clients Problems

    - by Nakedsteve
I'm trying to get a PPTP server running on a ubuntu server, but I've run into some issues with it. I followed this guide on how to set up pptpd on my server, and everything went smooth, but when I try to connect with my mac, it gives me this error: Here's my configuration: Does anyone have any idea as to what I'm doing wrong here?
