• WCF - (504) The server did not return a response for this request.

  I have a JSONP WCF service,using back end as MySql.It is working properly when i run it locally with visual studio. Now we have hosted it in Windows Server 2003. Now there is very strange problem occurring.. When I do a request with fiddler which does not require much processing internally, it gives me result 200 OK with desired output as response, But when I do a request which requires some internal data processing, it gives me 504 error(gateway time out error). • Determining the hostname/IP address from the MX record in PHP

  Hi there, have a basic email domain validation script that takes a user's email domain, resolves the IP address from that and then checks that against various published blacklists. Here is how I am determining the IP: $domain = substr(strchr($email, '@'), 1); $ip = gethostbyname($domain); The problem is that some email address domains, such as [email protected], use an MX record rather than an A record, so using gethostbyname('alumni.example.net') will fail to resolve. I know when a user's email is using an MX in the email itself by using the PHP checkdnsrr function, but once at that stage am a little stuck as to how to proceed. In theory, I could parse out the 'root' domain, i.e. 'example.net' and check it, but I've not found reliable regex that can handle this task when the user could easily have an email the format of [email protected]... So, any suggestions on how to best tackle this??

  While trying to learn Unity, I keep seeing the following code for overriding GetControllerInstance in MVC: if(!typeof(IController).IsAssignableFrom(controllerType)) { ... } this seems to me a pretty convoluted way of basically writing if(controllerType is IController) { ... } I appreciate there are subtle differences between is and IsAssignableFrom, ie IsAssignableFrom doesn't include cast conversions, but I'm struggling to understand the implication of this difference in practical scenarios. When is it imporantant to choose IsAssignableFrom over is? What difference would it make in the GetControllerExample? if (!typeof(IController).IsAssignableFrom(controllerType)) throw new ArgumentException(...); return _container.Resolve(controllerType) as IController;

• Automation of testing using JUnit

  Hi, i am trying to automate manual testing of modules in my project. We are dealing with IBM Websphere Message queue software. We have a trigger component written in core java which when executed polls for availability of message in the configured queue. Its an indefinite while loop that keeps the trigger component running. I have written test cases in JUnit to put message in the queue and now will i be able to start/stop the trigger component on demand? Invoking the trigger component keeps it running and i am not getting the control back to check the expected output. If i start it in thread then the log files to which the trigger component is supposed to update when processing the message is not getting updated. How can i resolve this situation. Your suggestion and directions is highly appreciated. Thanks, -Vijay

• Quick question about PayPal IPN Security

  PayPal IPN sends a POST request with a variable number of fields to the notify URL, in order to confirm that the POST request is legit we need to resubmit the same request along with a additional cmd=_notify-validate field to PayPal, which then replies SUCCESS or FAILURE. My question is, why do we need to resend the request to PayPal?   I've upgraded a FlexBuilder3 project to FlashBuilder4, and I am seeing many compilation errors regarding unsupported tag attributes: The style 'backgroundDisabledColor' is only supported by type 'mx.controls.TextInput' with the theme(s) 'halo' Here is the offending mxml element: <mx:TextInput x="245" y="86" id="code1" maxChars="15" change="enableButton(event)" cornerRadius="9" borderStyle="solid" backgroundDisabledColor="#7977b6" /> ...what is the best workaround for this particular error? I was able to easily resolve a similar error with the "backgroundColor" attribute by changing it to "contentBackgroundColor", and was hoping there was a simple workaround for backgroundDisabledColor as well. I realize I can apply a css style, but I'd rather have a simpler solution as there are many many other attribute errors similar to this one.

• Should I put my output files in source control?

  I've been asked to put every single file in my project under source control, including the database file (not the schema, the complete file). This seems wrong to me, but I can't explain it. Every resource I find about source control tells me not to put generated output files in a source control system. And I understand, it's not "source" files. However, I've been presented with the following reasoning: Who cares? We have plenty of bandwidth. I don't mind having to resolve a conflict each time I get the latest revision, it's just one click It's so much more convenient than having to think about good ignore files Also, if I have to add an external DLL file in the bin folder now, I can't forget to put it in source control, as the bin folder is not being ignored now. The simple solution for the last bullet-point is to add the file in a libraries folder and reference it from the project. Please explain if and why putting generated output files under source control is wrong.

• Converting Microsoft Word Smart Quotes to Straight Quotes

  We have a program where the user needs to do a Copy-Paste some content from Microsoft Word into a HTML editor (Visual Studio 2008). That content in the HTML is then used in our confirmation emails. Some of the characters like curly quotes turn into ? on the browser & in our confirmation email. For the browser... I was able to find how to resolve this issue by using jQuery. But for the confirmation email I cannot use JavaScript.   I am trying to use NHiberanate with NDbUnit but I cannot as NDbUnit tried to load MySql.Data version 1.0.10.1 and NHibernate tries to load version 6.2.2.0 and I can only reference one of them. I changed hres = CoInitializeEx(NULL, COINIT_MULTITHREADED); to hres = CoInitialize(NULL); After this changes error appear after CoInitializeSecurity: (80010119) Security must be initialized before any interfaces are marshalled or unmarshalled. It cannot be changed once initialized. How resolve this trouble?

  TortoiseSVN has a nice VBA script that allows to merge Microsoft Word documents using Word builtin change tracking functionality. This way, when I merge changes from a branch into the trunk I can resolve the conflicts in Word documents. However, the feature is not as useful as it could because it doesn't track revision changes; it just compares the two documents as a whole. This way, when I merge a revision where one paragraph was added to the document I'm not offered to review this paragraph. Instead, I have to review all the differences between the source and target documents (including stuff like TOC bookmark names). Is it an inherent limitation I cannot override? Or is it due to the fact that my Word version is pretty old? (I'm using Word 2002). Also, if you know about a magic tool or plugin... ;-)

The system cannot find the file specified. I've researched the problem and some of the solutions are pointing to Turning on Assembly Binding Logging. I'm confused as to what this error is. • Executing AJAX scripts within an AJAX response

  Hi there, I'm having trouble using AJAX page updates along with other AJAX scripts. During a normal page load, the AJAX scripts (picture scrolling and picture thumbnails) work fine. But when I update a page with AJAX, these scripts (usually loaded in the header of the initial page load) stop working. I am wondering if this is specific to these scripts and I need to look into them deeper to resolve/re-write or if I am missing something more generic in combining AJAX page updates with AJAX scripts the returned code relies on. Embedded javascript runs fine. Thanks for your ideas! I've got it installed, it renders and works, but PhpStorm still complains about undefined imports and mixins. How can I resolve this? Can Compass be included as an external library?   Do you agree that the designers of Java class java.io.IOException should have made it an unchecked run-time exception derived from java.lang.RuntimeException instead of a checked exception derived only from java.lang.Exception? I think that class IOException should have been an unchecked exception because there is little that an application can do to resolve problems like file system errors. However, in When You Can't Throw An Exception, Elliotte Rusty Harold claims that most I/O errors are transient and so you can retry an I/O operation several times before giving up: For instance, an IOComparator might not take an I/O error lying down, but — because many I/O problems are transient — you can retry a few times, as shown in Listing 7: Is this generally the case? Can a Java application correct I/O errors or wait for the system to recover? If so, then it is reasonable for IOException to be checked, but if it is not the case, then IOException should be unchecked so that business logic can delegate handling this exception to a separate system error handler.

• How can I prevent IIS from trying to load a dll?

  My project is a Speech Server application using Windows Workflow. It runs as an app under IIS. It supports a plug-in system. Here is what is happening: Load DLL into memory and set the type on an InvokeWorkflow control. When the InvokeWorkflow control runs, it appears to correctly instantiate the workflow from the loaded assembly - it completes the Initialize method. Everything crashes an burns, the target workflow is never executed. I can resolve this by putting a copy of the DLL in the application's executing directory. The workflow then executes correctly So it appears that IIS is trying to reload the assembly, even though its already in memory. Is there anyway to alter or disable this behavior in IIS? Perhaps a hook I can write that will intercept the request to load the dll and use my own logic to do so?

• Why isn't "String or Binary data would be truncated" a more descriptive error?

  To start: I understand what this error means - I'm not attempting to resolve an instance of it. This error is notoriously difficult to troubleshoot, because if you get it inserting a million rows into a table 100 columns wide, there's virtually no way to determine what column of what row is causing the error - you have to modify your process to insert one row at a time, and then see which one fails. That's a pain, to put it mildly. Is there any reason that the error doesn't look more like this? String or Binary data would be truncated Error inserting value "Some 18 char value" into SomeTable.SomeColumn VARCHAR(10) That would make it a lot easier to find and correct the value, if not the table structure itself. If seeing the table data is a security concern, then maybe something generic, like giving the length of the attempted value and the name of the failing column?
