  • MapReduce in DryadLINQ and PLINQ

    - by JoshReuben
    MapReduce See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mapreduce The MapReduce pattern aims to handle large-scale computations across a cluster of servers, often involving massive amounts of data. "The computation takes a set of input key/value pairs, and produces a set of output key/value pairs. The developer expresses the computation as two Func delegates: Map and Reduce. Map - takes a single input pair and produces a set of intermediate key/value pairs. The MapReduce function groups results by key and passes them to the Reduce function. Reduce - accepts an intermediate key I and a set of values for that key. It merges together these values to form a possibly smaller set of values. Typically just zero or one output value is produced per Reduce invocation. The intermediate values are supplied to the user's Reduce function via an iterator." the canonical MapReduce example: counting word frequency in a text file.     MapReduce using DryadLINQ see http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/dryadlinq/ and http://connect.microsoft.com/Dryad DryadLINQ provides a simple and straightforward way to implement MapReduce operations. This The implementation has two primary components: A Pair structure, which serves as a data container. A MapReduce method, which counts word frequency and returns the top five words. The Pair Structure - Pair has two properties: Word is a string that holds a word or key. Count is an int that holds the word count. The structure also overrides ToString to simplify printing the results. The following example shows the Pair implementation. public struct Pair { private string word; private int count; public Pair(string w, int c) { word = w; count = c; } public int Count { get { return count; } } public string Word { get { return word; } } public override string ToString() { return word + ":" + count.ToString(); } } The MapReduce function  that gets the results. the input data could be partitioned and distributed across the cluster. 1. Creates a DryadTable<LineRecord> object, inputTable, to represent the lines of input text. For partitioned data, use GetPartitionedTable<T> instead of GetTable<T> and pass the method a metadata file. 2. Applies the SelectMany operator to inputTable to transform the collection of lines into collection of words. The String.Split method converts the line into a collection of words. SelectMany concatenates the collections created by Split into a single IQueryable<string> collection named words, which represents all the words in the file. 3. Performs the Map part of the operation by applying GroupBy to the words object. The GroupBy operation groups elements with the same key, which is defined by the selector delegate. This creates a higher order collection, whose elements are groups. In this case, the delegate is an identity function, so the key is the word itself and the operation creates a groups collection that consists of groups of identical words. 4. Performs the Reduce part of the operation by applying Select to groups. This operation reduces the groups of words from Step 3 to an IQueryable<Pair> collection named counts that represents the unique words in the file and how many instances there are of each word. Each key value in groups represents a unique word, so Select creates one Pair object for each unique word. IGrouping.Count returns the number of items in the group, so each Pair object's Count member is set to the number of instances of the word. 5. Applies OrderByDescending to counts. This operation sorts the input collection in descending order of frequency and creates an ordered collection named ordered. 6. Applies Take to ordered to create an IQueryable<Pair> collection named top, which contains the 100 most common words in the input file, and their frequency. Test then uses the Pair object's ToString implementation to print the top one hundred words, and their frequency.   public static IQueryable<Pair> MapReduce( string directory, string fileName, int k) { DryadDataContext ddc = new DryadDataContext("file://" + directory); DryadTable<LineRecord> inputTable = ddc.GetTable<LineRecord>(fileName); IQueryable<string> words = inputTable.SelectMany(x => x.line.Split(' ')); IQueryable<IGrouping<string, string>> groups = words.GroupBy(x => x); IQueryable<Pair> counts = groups.Select(x => new Pair(x.Key, x.Count())); IQueryable<Pair> ordered = counts.OrderByDescending(x => x.Count); IQueryable<Pair> top = ordered.Take(k);   return top; }   To Test: IQueryable<Pair> results = MapReduce(@"c:\DryadData\input", "TestFile.txt", 100); foreach (Pair words in results) Debug.Print(words.ToString());   Note: DryadLINQ applications can use a more compact way to represent the query: return inputTable         .SelectMany(x => x.line.Split(' '))         .GroupBy(x => x)         .Select(x => new Pair(x.Key, x.Count()))         .OrderByDescending(x => x.Count)         .Take(k);     MapReduce using PLINQ The pattern is relevant even for a single multi-core machine, however. We can write our own PLINQ MapReduce in a few lines. the Map function takes a single input value and returns a set of mapped values àLINQ's SelectMany operator. These are then grouped according to an intermediate key à LINQ GroupBy operator. The Reduce function takes each intermediate key and a set of values for that key, and produces any number of outputs per key à LINQ SelectMany again. We can put all of this together to implement MapReduce in PLINQ that returns a ParallelQuery<T> public static ParallelQuery<TResult> MapReduce<TSource, TMapped, TKey, TResult>( this ParallelQuery<TSource> source, Func<TSource, IEnumerable<TMapped>> map, Func<TMapped, TKey> keySelector, Func<IGrouping<TKey, TMapped>, IEnumerable<TResult>> reduce) { return source .SelectMany(map) .GroupBy(keySelector) .SelectMany(reduce); } the map function takes in an input document and outputs all of the words in that document. The grouping phase groups all of the identical words together, such that the reduce phase can then count the words in each group and output a word/count pair for each grouping: var files = Directory.EnumerateFiles(dirPath, "*.txt").AsParallel(); var counts = files.MapReduce( path => File.ReadLines(path).SelectMany(line => line.Split(delimiters)), word => word, group => new[] { new KeyValuePair<string, int>(group.Key, group.Count()) });

  • UV Atlas Generation and Seam Removal

    - by P. Avery
    I'm generating light maps for scene mesh objects using DirectX's UV Atlas Tool( D3DXUVAtlasCreate() ). I've succeeded in generating an atlas, however, when I try to render the mesh object using the atlas the seams are visible on the mesh. Below are images of a lightmap generated for a cube. Here is the code I use to generate a uv atlas for a cube: struct sVertexPosNormTex { D3DXVECTOR3 vPos, vNorm; D3DXVECTOR2 vUV; sVertexPosNormTex(){} sVertexPosNormTex( D3DXVECTOR3 v, D3DXVECTOR3 n, D3DXVECTOR2 uv ) { vPos = v; vNorm = n; vUV = uv; } ~sVertexPosNormTex() { } }; // create a light map texture to fill programatically hr = D3DXCreateTexture( pd3dDevice, 128, 128, 1, 0, D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8, D3DPOOL_MANAGED, &pLightmap ); if( FAILED( hr ) ) { DebugStringDX( "Main", "Failed to D3DXCreateTexture( lightmap )", __LINE__, hr ); return hr; } // get the zero level surface from the texture IDirect3DSurface9 *pS = NULL; pLightmap->GetSurfaceLevel( 0, &pS ); // clear surface pd3dDevice->ColorFill( pS, NULL, D3DCOLOR_XRGB( 0, 0, 0 ) ); // load a sample mesh DWORD dwcMaterials = 0; LPD3DXBUFFER pMaterialBuffer = NULL; V_RETURN( D3DXLoadMeshFromX( L"cube3.x", D3DXMESH_MANAGED, pd3dDevice, &pAdjacency, &pMaterialBuffer, NULL, &dwcMaterials, &g_pMesh ) ); // generate adjacency DWORD *pdwAdjacency = new DWORD[ 3 * g_pMesh->GetNumFaces() ]; g_pMesh->GenerateAdjacency( 1e-6f, pdwAdjacency ); // create light map coordinates LPD3DXMESH pMesh = NULL; LPD3DXBUFFER pFacePartitioning = NULL, pVertexRemapArray = NULL; FLOAT resultStretch = 0; UINT numCharts = 0; hr = D3DXUVAtlasCreate( g_pMesh, 0, 0, 128, 128, 3.5f, 0, pdwAdjacency, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, 0, &pMesh, &pFacePartitioning, &pVertexRemapArray, &resultStretch, &numCharts ); if( SUCCEEDED( hr ) ) { // release and set mesh SAFE_RELEASE( g_pMesh ); g_pMesh = pMesh; // write mesh to file hr = D3DXSaveMeshToX( L"cube4.x", g_pMesh, 0, ( const D3DXMATERIAL* )pMaterialBuffer->GetBufferPointer(), NULL, dwcMaterials, D3DXF_FILEFORMAT_TEXT ); if( FAILED( hr ) ) { DebugStringDX( "Main", "Failed to D3DXSaveMeshToX() at OnD3D9CreateDevice()", __LINE__, hr ); } // fill the the light map hr = BuildLightmap( pS, g_pMesh ); if( FAILED( hr ) ) { DebugStringDX( "Main", "Failed to BuildLightmap()", __LINE__, hr ); SAFE_RELEASE( pMaterialBuffer ); Here is code to fill lightmap texture: HRESULT BuildLightmap( IDirect3DSurface9 *pS, LPD3DXMESH pMesh ) { HRESULT hr = S_OK; // validate lightmap texture surface and mesh if( !pS || !pMesh ) return E_POINTER; // lock the mesh vertex buffer sVertexPosNormTex *pV = NULL; pMesh->LockVertexBuffer( D3DLOCK_READONLY, ( void** )&pV ); // lock the mesh index buffer WORD *pI = NULL; pMesh->LockIndexBuffer( D3DLOCK_READONLY, ( void** )&pI ); // get the lightmap texture surface description D3DSURFACE_DESC desc; pS->GetDesc( &desc ); // lock the surface rect to fill with color data D3DLOCKED_RECT rct; hr = pS->LockRect( &rct, NULL, 0 ); if( FAILED( hr ) ) { DebugStringDX( "main.cpp:", "Failed to IDirect3DTexture9::LockRect()", __LINE__, hr ); // for each face of the mesh // check to see if the pixel lies within the face's uv coordinates for( UINT i = 0; i < 3 * pMesh->GetNumFaces(); i +=3 ) { sVertexPosNormTex v[ 3 ]; v[ 0 ] = pV[ pI[ i + 0 ] ]; v[ 1 ] = pV[ pI[ i + 1 ] ]; v[ 2 ] = pV[ pI[ i + 2 ] ]; if( TexcoordIsWithinBounds( v[ 0 ].vUV, v[ 1 ].vUV, v[ 2 ].vUV, p ) ) { // the pixel lies b/t the uv coordinates of a cube face // light contribution functions aren't needed yet //D3DXVECTOR3 vPos = TexcoordToPos( v[ 0 ].vPos, v[ 1 ].vPos, v[ 2 ].vPos, v[ 0 ].vUV, v[ 1 ].vUV, v[ 2 ].vUV, p ); //D3DXVECTOR3 vNormal = v[ 0 ].vNorm; // set the color of this pixel red( for demo ) BYTE ba[] = { 0, 0, 255, 255, }; //ComputeContribution( vPos, vNormal, g_sLight, ba ); // copy the byte array into the light map texture memcpy( ( void* )&pBufferRow[ x ], ( void* )ba, 4 * sizeof( BYTE ) ); } } } // go to next line of the texture pBuffer += rct.Pitch; } // unlock the surface rect pS->UnlockRect(); // unlock mesh vertex and index buffers pMesh->UnlockIndexBuffer(); pMesh->UnlockVertexBuffer(); // write the surface to file hr = D3DXSaveSurfaceToFile( L"LightMap.jpg", D3DXIFF_JPG, pS, NULL, NULL ); if( FAILED( hr ) ) DebugStringDX( "Main.cpp", "Failed to D3DXSaveSurfaceToFile()", __LINE__, hr ); return hr; } bool TexcoordIsWithinBounds( const D3DXVECTOR2 &t0, const D3DXVECTOR2 &t1, const D3DXVECTOR2 &t2, const D3DXVECTOR2 &p ) { // compute vectors D3DXVECTOR2 v0 = t1 - t0, v1 = t2 - t0, v2 = p - t0; float f00 = D3DXVec2Dot( &v0, &v0 ); float f01 = D3DXVec2Dot( &v0, &v1 ); float f02 = D3DXVec2Dot( &v0, &v2 ); float f11 = D3DXVec2Dot( &v1, &v1 ); float f12 = D3DXVec2Dot( &v1, &v2 ); // Compute barycentric coordinates float invDenom = 1 / ( f00 * f11 - f01 * f01 ); float fU = ( f11 * f02 - f01 * f12 ) * invDenom; float fV = ( f00 * f12 - f01 * f02 ) * invDenom; // Check if point is in triangle if( ( fU >= 0 ) && ( fV >= 0 ) && ( fU + fV < 1 ) ) return true; return false; } Screenshot Lightmap I believe the problem comes from the difference between the lightmap uv coordinates and the pixel center coordinates...for example, here are the lightmap uv coordinates( generated by D3DXUVAtlasCreate() ) for a specific face( tri ) within the mesh, keep in mind that I'm using the mesh uv coordinates to write the pixels for the texture: v[ 0 ].uv = D3DXVECTOR2( 0.003581, 0.295631 ); v[ 1 ].uv = D3DXVECTOR2( 0.003581, 0.003581 ); v[ 2 ].uv = D3DXVECTOR2( 0.295631, 0.003581 ); the lightmap texture size is 128 x 128 pixels. The upper-left pixel center coordinates are: float halfPixel = 0.5 / 128 = 0.00390625; D3DXVECTOR2 pixelCenter = D3DXVECTOR2( halfPixel, halfPixel ); will the mapping and sampling of the lightmap texture will require that an offset be taken into account or that the uv coordinates are snapped to the pixel centers..? ...Any ideas on the best way to approach this situation would be appreciated...What are the common practices?

  • A* PathFinding Poor Performance

    - by RedShft
    After debugging for a few hours, the algorithm seems to be working. Right now to check if it works i'm checking the end node position to the currentNode position when the while loop quits. So far the values look correct. The problem is, the farther I get from the NPC, who is current stationary, the worse the performance gets. It gets to a point where the game is unplayable less than 10 fps. My current PathGraph is 2500 nodes, which I believe is pretty small, right? Any ideas on how to improve performance? struct Node { bool walkable; //Whether this node is blocked or open vect2 position; //The tile's position on the map in pixels int xIndex, yIndex; //The index values of the tile in the array Node*[4] connections; //An array of pointers to nodes this current node connects to Node* parent; int gScore; int hScore; int fScore; } class AStar { private: SList!Node openList; SList!Node closedList; //Node*[4] connections; //The connections of the current node; Node currentNode; //The current node being processed Node[] Path; //The path found; const int connectionCost = 10; Node start, end; ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// void AddToList(ref SList!Node list, ref Node node ) { list.insert( node ); } void RemoveFrom(ref SList!Node list, ref Node node ) { foreach( elem; list ) { if( node.xIndex == elem.xIndex && node.yIndex == elem.yIndex ) { auto a = find( list[] , elem ); list.linearRemove( take(a, 1 ) ); } } } bool IsInList( SList!Node list, ref Node node ) { foreach( elem; list ) { if( node.xIndex == elem.xIndex && node.yIndex == elem.yIndex ) return true; } return false; } void ClearList( SList!Node list ) { list.clear; } void SetParentNode( ref Node parent, ref Node child ) { child.parent = &parent; } void SetStartAndEndNode( vect2 vStart, vect2 vEnd, Node[] PathGraph ) { int startXIndex, startYIndex; int endXIndex, endYIndex; startXIndex = cast(int)( vStart.x / 32 ); startYIndex = cast(int)( vStart.y / 32 ); endXIndex = cast(int)( vEnd.x / 32 ); endYIndex = cast(int)( vEnd.y / 32 ); foreach( node; PathGraph ) { if( node.xIndex == startXIndex && node.yIndex == startYIndex ) { start = node; } if( node.xIndex == endXIndex && node.yIndex == endYIndex ) { end = node; } } } void SetStartScores( ref Node start ) { start.gScore = 0; start.hScore = CalculateHScore( start, end ); start.fScore = CalculateFScore( start ); } Node GetLowestFScore() { Node lowest; lowest.fScore = 10000; foreach( elem; openList ) { if( elem.fScore < lowest.fScore ) lowest = elem; } return lowest; } //This function current sets the program into an infinite loop //I still need to debug to figure out why the parent nodes aren't correct void GeneratePath() { while( currentNode.position != start.position ) { Path ~= currentNode; currentNode = *currentNode.parent; } } void ReversePath() { Node[] temp; for(int i = Path.length - 1; i >= 0; i-- ) { temp ~= Path[i]; } Path = temp.dup; } public: //@FIXME It seems to find the path, but now performance is terrible void FindPath( vect2 vStart, vect2 vEnd, Node[] PathGraph ) { openList.clear; closedList.clear; SetStartAndEndNode( vStart, vEnd, PathGraph ); SetStartScores( start ); AddToList( openList, start ); while( currentNode.position != end.position ) { currentNode = GetLowestFScore(); if( currentNode.position == end.position ) break; else { RemoveFrom( openList, currentNode ); AddToList( closedList, currentNode ); for( int i = 0; i < currentNode.connections.length; i++ ) { if( currentNode.connections[i] is null ) continue; else { if( IsInList( closedList, *currentNode.connections[i] ) && currentNode.gScore < currentNode.connections[i].gScore ) { currentNode.connections[i].gScore = currentNode.gScore + connectionCost; currentNode.connections[i].hScore = abs( currentNode.connections[i].xIndex - end.xIndex ) + abs( currentNode.connections[i].yIndex - end.yIndex ); currentNode.connections[i].fScore = currentNode.connections[i].gScore + currentNode.connections[i].hScore; currentNode.connections[i].parent = &currentNode; } else if( IsInList( openList, *currentNode.connections[i] ) && currentNode.gScore < currentNode.connections[i].gScore ) { currentNode.connections[i].gScore = currentNode.gScore + connectionCost; currentNode.connections[i].hScore = abs( currentNode.connections[i].xIndex - end.xIndex ) + abs( currentNode.connections[i].yIndex - end.yIndex ); currentNode.connections[i].fScore = currentNode.connections[i].gScore + currentNode.connections[i].hScore; currentNode.connections[i].parent = &currentNode; } else { currentNode.connections[i].gScore = currentNode.gScore + connectionCost; currentNode.connections[i].hScore = abs( currentNode.connections[i].xIndex - end.xIndex ) + abs( currentNode.connections[i].yIndex - end.yIndex ); currentNode.connections[i].fScore = currentNode.connections[i].gScore + currentNode.connections[i].hScore; currentNode.connections[i].parent = &currentNode; AddToList( openList, *currentNode.connections[i] ); } } } } } writeln( "Current Node Position: ", currentNode.position ); writeln( "End Node Position: ", end.position ); if( currentNode.position == end.position ) { writeln( "Current Node Parent: ", currentNode.parent ); //GeneratePath(); //ReversePath(); } } Node[] GetPath() { return Path; } } This is my first attempt at A* so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Unable to list contents/remove directory (linux ext3)

    - by RedKrieg
    System is CentOS5 x86_64, completely up to date. I've got a folder that can't be listed (ls just hangs, eating memory until it is killed). The directory size is nearly 500k: root@server [/home/user/public_html/domain.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03]# stat . File: `.' Size: 458752 Blocks: 904 IO Block: 4096 directory Device: 812h/2066d Inode: 44499071 Links: 2 Access: (0755/drwxr-xr-x) Uid: ( 3292/ user) Gid: ( 3287/ user) Access: 2012-06-29 17:31:47.000000000 -0400 Modify: 2012-10-23 14:41:58.000000000 -0400 Change: 2012-10-23 14:41:58.000000000 -0400 I can see the file names if I use ls -1f, but it just repeats the same 48 files ad infinitum, all of which have non-ascii characters somewhere in the file name: La-critic\363-al-servicio-la-privacidad-300x160.jpg When I try to access the files (say to copy them or remove them) I get messages like the following: lstat("/home/user/public_html/domain.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Sebast\355an-Pi\361era-el-balc\363n-150x120.jpg", 0x7fff364c52c0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) I tried altering the code found on this man page and modified the code to call unlink for each file. I get the same ENOENT error from the unlink call: unlink("/home/user/public_html/domain.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Marca-naci\363n-Madrid-150x120.jpg") = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) I also straced a "touch", grabbed the syscalls it makes and replicated them, then tried to unlink the resulting file by name. This works fine, but the folder still contains an entry by the same name after the operation completes and the program runs for an arbitrarily long time (strace output ended up at 20GB after 5 minutes and I stopped the process). I'm stumped on this one, I'd really prefer not to have to take this production machine (hundreds of customers) offline to fsck the filesystem, but I'm leaning toward that being the only option at this point. If anyone's had success using other methods for removing files (by inode number, I can get those with the getdents code) I'd love to hear them. (Yes, I've tried find . -inum <inode> -exec rm -fv {} \; and it still has the problem with unlink returning ENOENT) For those interested, here's the diff between that man page's code and mine. • SlimDX: Lightning problem with Direct3D9

    - by Spi1988
    I am creating a simple application to get familiar with SlimDX library. I found some code written in MDX and I'm trying to convert it to run on SlimDX. I am having some problems with the light because everything is being shown as black. The code is: public partial class DirectTest : Form { private Device device= null; private float angle = 0.0f; Light light = new Light(); public DirectTest() { InitializeComponent(); this.Size = new Size(800, 600); this.SetStyle(ControlStyles.AllPaintingInWmPaint | ControlStyles.Opaque, true); } /// <summary> /// We will initialize our graphics device here /// </summary> public void InitializeGraphics() { PresentParameters pres_params = new PresentParameters() { Windowed = true, SwapEffect = SwapEffect.Discard }; device = new Device(new Direct3D(), 0, DeviceType.Hardware, this.Handle, CreateFlags.SoftwareVertexProcessing, pres_params); } private void SetupCamera() { device.SetRenderState(RenderState.CullMode, Cull.None); device.SetTransform(TransformState.World, Matrix.RotationAxis(new Vector3(angle / ((float)Math.PI * 2.0f), angle / ((float)Math.PI * 4.0f), angle / ((float)Math.PI * 6.0f)), angle / (float)Math.PI)); angle += 0.1f; device.SetTransform(TransformState.Projection, Matrix.PerspectiveFovLH((float)Math.PI / 4, this.Width / this.Height, 1.0f, 100.0f)); device.SetTransform(TransformState.View, Matrix.LookAtLH(new Vector3(0, 0, 5.0f), new Vector3(), new Vector3(0, 1, 0))); device.SetRenderState(RenderState.Lighting, false); } protected override void OnPaint(System.Windows.Forms.PaintEventArgs e) { device.Clear(ClearFlags.Target | ClearFlags.ZBuffer, Color.CornflowerBlue, 1.0f, 0); SetupCamera(); CustomVertex.PositionColored[] verts = new CustomVertex.PositionColored[3]; verts[0].Position = new Vector3(0.0f, 1.0f, 1.0f); verts[0].Normal = new Vector3(0.0f, 0.0f, -1.0f); verts[0].Color = System.Drawing.Color.White.ToArgb(); verts[1].Position = new Vector3(-1.0f, -1.0f, 1.0f); verts[1].Normal = new Vector3(0.0f, 0.0f, -1.0f); verts[1].Color = System.Drawing.Color.White.ToArgb(); verts[2].Position = new Vector3(1.0f, -1.0f, 1.0f); verts[2].Normal = new Vector3(0.0f, 0.0f, -1.0f); verts[2].Color = System.Drawing.Color.White.ToArgb(); light.Type = LightType.Point; light.Position = new Vector3(); light.Diffuse = System.Drawing.Color.White; light.Attenuation0 = 0.2f; light.Range = 10000.0f; device.SetLight(0, light); device.EnableLight(0, true); device.BeginScene(); device.VertexFormat = CustomVertex.PositionColored.format; device.DrawUserPrimitives<CustomVertex.PositionColored>(PrimitiveType.TriangleList, 1, verts); device.EndScene(); device.Present(); this.Invalidate(); } } } The Vertex Format that I am using is the following [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)] public struct PositionNormalColored { public Vector3 Position; public int Color; public Vector3 Normal; public static readonly VertexFormat format = VertexFormat.Diffuse | VertexFormat.Position | VertexFormat.Normal; } Any suggestions on what the problem might be? Thanks in Advance

  • Write a signal handler to catch SIGSEGV

    - by Adi
    Hi all, I want to write a signal handler to catch SIGSEGV. First , I would protect a block of memory for read or writes using char *buffer; char *p; char a; int pagesize = 4096; " mprotect(buffer,pagesize,PROT_NONE) " What this will do is , it will protect the memory starting from buffer till pagesize for any reads or writes. Second , I will try to read the memory by doing something like p = buffer; a = *p This will generate a SIGSEGV and i have initialized a handler for this. The handler will be called . So far so good. Now the problem I am facing is , once the handler is called, I want to change the access write of the memory by doing mprotect(buffer, pagesize,PROT_READ); and continue my normal functioning of the code. I do not want to exit the function. On future writes to the same memory, I want again catch the signal and modify the write rights and then take account of that event. Here is the code I am trying : #include <signal.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <malloc.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <errno.h> #include <sys/mman.h> #define handle_error(msg) \ do { perror(msg); exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } while (0) char *buffer; int flag=0; static void handler(int sig, siginfo_t *si, void *unused) { printf("Got SIGSEGV at address: 0x%lx\n",(long) si->si_addr); printf("Implements the handler only\n"); flag=1; //exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { char *p; char a; int pagesize; struct sigaction sa; sa.sa_flags = SA_SIGINFO; sigemptyset(&sa.sa_mask); sa.sa_sigaction = handler; if (sigaction(SIGSEGV, &sa, NULL) == -1) handle_error("sigaction"); pagesize=4096; /* Allocate a buffer aligned on a page boundary; initial protection is PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE */ buffer = memalign(pagesize, 4 * pagesize); if (buffer == NULL) handle_error("memalign"); printf("Start of region: 0x%lx\n", (long) buffer); printf("Start of region: 0x%lx\n", (long) buffer+pagesize); printf("Start of region: 0x%lx\n", (long) buffer+2*pagesize); printf("Start of region: 0x%lx\n", (long) buffer+3*pagesize); //if (mprotect(buffer + pagesize * 0, pagesize,PROT_NONE) == -1) if (mprotect(buffer + pagesize * 0, pagesize,PROT_NONE) == -1) handle_error("mprotect"); //for (p = buffer ; ; ) if(flag==0) { p = buffer+pagesize/2; printf("It comes here before reading memory\n"); a = *p; //trying to read the memory printf("It comes here after reading memory\n"); } else { if (mprotect(buffer + pagesize * 0, pagesize,PROT_READ) == -1) handle_error("mprotect"); a = *p; printf("Now i can read the memory\n"); } /* for (p = buffer;p<=buffer+4*pagesize ;p++ ) { //a = *(p); *(p) = 'a'; printf("Writing at address %p\n",p); }*/ printf("Loop completed\n"); /* Should never happen */ exit(EXIT_SUCCESS); } The problem I am facing with this is ,only the signal handler is running and I am not able to return to the main function after catching the signal.. Any help in this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Aditya

  • Creating a MiniDump of a running process

    - by Lodle
    Im trying to make a tool for my end users that can create a MiniDump of my application if it hangs (i.e. external to the app). Im using the same code as the internal MiniDumper but with the handle and processid of the app but i keep getting error code 0xD0000024 when calling MiniDumpWriteDump. • overloaded stream insertion operator with a vector

    - by Julz
    hi, i'm trying to write an overloaded stream insertion operator for a class who's only member is a vector. i dont really know what i'm doing. (lets make that clear) it's a vector of "Points" which is a struct containing two doubles. i figure what i want is to insert user input (a bunch of doubles) into a stream that i then send to a modifier method? i keep working off other stream insertion examples such as... std::ostream& operator<< (std::ostream& o, Fred const& fred) { return o << fred.i_; } but when i try a similar..... istream & operator >> (istream &inStream, Polygon &vertStr) { inStream >> ws; inStream >> vertStr.vertices; return inStream; } i get an error "no match for operator etc etc. if i leave off the .vertices it compiles but i figure it's not right? (vertices is the name of my vector ) and even if it is right, i dont actually know what syntax to use in my driver to use it? also not %100 on what my modifier method needs to look like. here's my Polygon class //header #ifndef POLYGON_H #define POLYGON_H #include "Segment.h" #include <vector> class Polygon { friend std::istream & operator >> (std::istream &inStream, Polygon &vertStr); public: //Constructor Polygon(const Point &theVerts); //Default Constructor Polygon(); //Copy Constructor Polygon(const Polygon &polyCopy); //Accessor/Modifier methods inline std::vector<Point> getVector() const {return vertices;} //Return number of Vector elements inline int sizeOfVect() const {return (int) vertices.capacity();} //add Point elements to vector inline void setVertices(const Point &theVerts){vertices.push_back (theVerts);} private: std::vector<Point> vertices; }; #endif //Body using namespace std; #include "Polygon.h" // Constructor Polygon::Polygon(const Point &theVerts) { vertices.push_back (theVerts); } //Copy Constructor Polygon::Polygon(const Polygon &polyCopy) { vertices = polyCopy.vertices; } //Default Constructor Polygon::Polygon(){} istream & operator >> (istream &inStream, Polygon &vertStr) { inStream >> ws; inStream >> vertStr; return inStream; } any help greatly appreciated, sorry to be so vague, a lecturer has just kind of given us a brief example of stream insertion then left us on our own thanks. oh i realise there are probably many other problems that need fixing

  • With Eclipselink/JPA, can I have a Foreign Composite Key that shares a field with a Primary Composit

    - by user107924
    My database has two entities; Company and Person. A Company can have many People, but a Person must have only one Company. The table structure looks as follows. COMPANY ---------- owner PK comp_id PK c_name PERSON ---------------- owner PK, FK1 personid PK comp_id FK1 p_fname p_sname It has occurred to me that I could remove PERSON.OWNER and derive it through the foreign key; however, I can't make this change without affecting legacy code. I have modeled these as JPA-annotated classes; @Entity @Table(name = "PERSON") @IdClass(PersonPK.class) public class Person implements Serializable { @Id private String owner; @Id private String personid; @ManyToOne @JoinColumns( {@JoinColumn(name = "owner", referencedColumnName = "OWNER", insertable = false, updatable = false), @JoinColumn(name = "comp_id", referencedColumnName = "COMP_ID", insertable = true, updatable = true)}) private Company company; private String p_fname; private String p_sname; ...and standard getters/setters... } @Entity @Table(name = "COMPANY") @IdClass(CompanyPK.class) public class Company implements Serializable { @Id private String owner; @Id private String comp_id; private String c_name; @OneToMany(mappedBy = "company", cascade=CascadeType.ALL) private List people; ...and standard getters/setters... } My PersonPK and CompanyPK classes are nothing special, they just serve as a struct holding owner and the ID field, and override hashCode and equals(o). So far so good. I come across a problem, however, when trying to deal with associations. It seems if I have an existing Company, and create a Person, and associate to the Person to the Company and persist the company, the association is not saved when the Person is inserted. For example, my main code looks like this: EntityManager em = emf.createEntityManager(); em.getTransaction().begin(); CompanyPK companyPK = new CompanyPK(); companyPK.owner="USA"; companyPK.comp_id="1102F3"; Company company = em.find(Company.class, companyPK); Person person = new Person(); person.setOwner("USA"); person.setPersonid("5116628123"); //some number that doesn't exist yet person.setP_fname("Hannah"); person.setP_sname("Montana"); person.setCompany(company); em.persist(person); This completes without error; however in the database I find that the Person record was inserted with a null in the COMP_ID field. With EclipseLink debug logging set to FINE, the SQL query is shown as: INSERT INTO PERSON (PERSONID,OWNER,P_SNAME,P_FNAME) VALUES (?,?,?,?) bind = [5116628123,USA,Montana,Hannah,] I would have expected this to be saved, and the query to be equivalent to INSERT INTO PERSON (PERSONID,OWNER,COMP_ID,P_SNAME,P_FNAME) VALUES (?,?,?,?,?) bind = [5116628123,USA,1102F3,Montana,Hannah,] What gives? Is it incorrect to say updatable/insertable=true for one half of a composite key and =false for the other half? If I have updatable/insertable=true for both parts of the foreign key, then Eclipselink fails to startup saying that I can not use the column twice without having one set to readonly by specifying these options.

  • C++ custom exceptions: run time performance and passing exceptions from C++ to C

    - by skyeagle
    I am writing a custom C++ exception class (so I can pass exceptions occuring in C++ to another language via a C API). My initial plan of attack was to proceed as follows: //C++ myClass { public: myClass(); ~myClass(); void foo() // throws myException int foo(const int i, const bool b) // throws myException } * myClassPtr; // C API #ifdef __cplusplus extern "C" { #endif myClassPtr MyClass_New(); void MyClass_Destroy(myClassPtr p); void MyClass_Foo(myClassPtr p); int MyClass_FooBar(myClassPtr p, int i, bool b); #ifdef __cplusplus }; #endif I need a way to be able to pass exceptions thrown in the C++ code to the C side. The information I want to pass to the C side is the following: (a). What (b). Where (c). Simple Stack Trace (just the sequence of error messages in order they occured, no debugging info etc) I want to modify my C API, so that the API functions take a pointer to a struct ExceptionInfo, which will contain any exception info (if an exception occured) before consuming the results of the invocation. This raises two questions: Question 1 1. Implementation of each of the C++ methods exposed in the C API needs to be enclosed in a try/catch statement. The performance implications for this seem quite serious (according to this article): "It is a mistake (with high runtime cost) to use C++ exception handling for events that occur frequently, or for events that are handled near the point of detection." At the same time, I remember reading somewhere in my C++ days, that all though exception handling is expensive, it only becmes expensive when an exception actually occurs. So, which is correct?. what to do?. Is there an alternative way that I can trap errors safely and pass the resulting error info to the C API?. Or is this a minor consideration (the article after all, is quite old, and hardware have improved a bit since then). Question 2 I wuld like to modify the exception class given in that article, so that it contains a simple stack trace, and I need some help doing that. Again, in order to make the exception class 'lightweight', I think its a good idea not to include any STL classes, like string or vector (good idea/bad idea?). Which potentially leaves me with a fixed length C string (char*) which will be stack allocated. So I can maybe just keep appending messages (delimted by a unique separator [up to maximum length of buffer])... Its been a while since I did any serious C++ coding, and I will be grateful for the help. BTW, this is what I have come up with so far (I am intentionally, not deriving from std::exception because of the performance reasons mentioned in the article, and I am instead, throwing an integral exception (based on an exception enumeration): class fast_exception { public: fast_exception(int what, char const* file=0, int line=0) : what_(what), line_(line), file_(file) {/*empty*/} int what() const { return what_; } int line() const { return line_; } char const* file() const { return file_; } private: int what_; int line_; char const[MAX_BUFFER_SIZE] file_; }

  • c# SendMessage and Skype woes

    - by Xcelled194
    I'm trying to create an add-on to Skype with C#. I don't want to use Skype4COM, as I'd like the experience with messages and such. Unfortunately, the messages are tripping me up. I've got the pumps and such set up. They all work, and my app successfully sends the "APIDiscover" message to Skype, gets a "PendingAuth" response and then the "AttachSuccess" message. However, when I try to send "ping" to Skype (to which it should reply "pong") nothing happens. The return code from SendMessage is 0 but Marshall.GetLastWin32Error is 1400 (Invalid handle). The handle was returned with the AttachSuccess method. The equivalent C++ code does work, so I'm at a loss. First is the C++ code I'm using as a guide: Here's the (cut down) message pump. You can ignore everything but where I put the //<---- static LRESULT APIENTRY SkypeAPITest_Windows_WindowProc( HWND hWindow, UINT uiMessage, WPARAM uiParam, LPARAM ulParam) { LRESULT lReturnCode; bool fIssueDefProc; lReturnCode=0; fIssueDefProc=false; switch(uiMessage) { case WM_COPYDATA: if( hGlobal_SkypeAPIWindowHandle==(HWND)uiParam ) { PCOPYDATASTRUCT poCopyData=(PCOPYDATASTRUCT)ulParam; printf( "Message from Skype(%u): %.*s\n", poCopyData->dwData, poCopyData->cbData, poCopyData->lpData); lReturnCode=1; } break; default: if( uiMessage==uiGlobal_MsgID_SkypeControlAPIAttach ) { switch(ulParam) { case SKYPECONTROLAPI_ATTACH_SUCCESS: printf("!!! Connected; to terminate issue #disconnect\n"); hGlobal_SkypeAPIWindowHandle=(HWND)uiParam;//<---- Right here is where we receive the handle from Skype. break; } if( fIssueDefProc ) lReturnCode=DefWindowProc( hWindow, uiMessage, uiParam, ulParam); return(lReturnCode); } and this is the (again dumbed down) "sending message" code void __cdecl Global_InputProcessingThread(void *) { static char acInputRow[1024]; bool fProcessed; if( SendMessageTimeout( HWND_BROADCAST, uiGlobal_MsgID_SkypeControlAPIDiscover, (WPARAM)hInit_MainWindowHandle, 0, SMTO_ABORTIFHUNG, 1000, NULL)!=0 ) { while(Global_Console_ReadRow( acInputRow, sizeof(acInputRow)-1)) { if( fProcessed==false && hGlobal_SkypeAPIWindowHandle!=NULL ) { COPYDATASTRUCT oCopyData; // send command to skype oCopyData.dwData=0; oCopyData.lpData=acInputRow; oCopyData.cbData=strlen(acInputRow)+1; if( oCopyData.cbData!=1 ) { if( SendMessage( hGlobal_SkypeAPIWindowHandle, WM_COPYDATA, (WPARAM)hInit_MainWindowHandle, (LPARAM)&oCopyData)==FALSE ) { hGlobal_SkypeAPIWindowHandle=NULL; printf("!!! Disconnected\n"); } } } } } SendMessage( hInit_MainWindowHandle, WM_CLOSE, 0, 0); SetEvent(hGlobal_ThreadShutdownEvent); fGlobal_ThreadRunning=false; } And now here's my C# public bool PreFilterMessage(ref Message m) { Console.WriteLine(m.ToString()); if (m.Msg == WM_COPYDATA && SkypeAPIWindowHandle == m.WParam) { SkypeMessage(m); return true; } if (m.Msg == MsgApiAttach) { switch (m.LParam.ToInt32()) { case (int)SkypeControlAPIAttach.SUCCESS: SkypeAPIWindowHandle = m.WParam; //Here's where we set the Skype Handle AttachSuccess(m); return true; } } return false; //Defer all other messages } And here is my DLL import and Sending code [DllImport("user32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, SetLastError = false)] static extern IntPtr SendMessageA(IntPtr hWnd, UInt32 Msg, IntPtr wParam, ref MsgHelper.COPYDATASTRUCT lParam); public static void Command(string c) { if (c.Last() != '\0') c += "\0"; //Make string null terminated Console.WriteLine(); MsgHelper.COPYDATASTRUCT cda = new MsgHelper.COPYDATASTRUCT(); cda.dwData = new IntPtr(0); cda.lpData = c; cda.cbData = c.Length + 1; Marshal.GetLastWin32Error(); //Clear last error Console.WriteLine(SendMessageA(mHelper.SkypeAPIWindowHandle, MsgHelper.WM_COPYDATA, IntPtr.Zero, ref cda)); Console.WriteLine(Marshal.GetLastWin32Error()); } COPYDATASTRUCT is: public struct COPYDATASTRUCT { public IntPtr dwData; public int cbData; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.LPStr)] public string lpData; } I think that's everything. Let me know if I forgot something. Any ideas why I'm getting the 1400?

  • FreeType2 Bitmap to System::Drawing::Bitmap.

    - by Dennis Roche
    Hi, I'm trying to convert a FreeType2 bitmap to a System::Drawing::Bitmap in C++/CLI. FT_Bitmap has a unsigned char* buffer that contains the data to write. I have got somewhat working save it disk as a *.tga, but when saving as *.bmp it renders incorrectly. I believe that the size of byte[] is incorrect and that my data is truncated. Any hints/tips/ideas on what is going on here would be greatly appreciated. Links to articles explaining byte layout and pixel formats etc. would be helpful. Thanks!! C++/CLI code. FT_Bitmap *bitmap = &face->glyph->bitmap; int width = (face->bitmap->metrics.width / 64); int height = (face->bitmap->metrics.height / 64); // must be aligned on a 32 bit boundary or 4 bytes int depth = 8; int stride = ((width * depth + 31) & ~31) >> 3; int bytes = (int)(stride * height); // as *.tga void *buffer = bytes ? malloc(bytes) : NULL; if (buffer) { memset(buffer, 0, bytes); for (int i = 0; i < glyph->rows; ++i) memcpy((char *)buffer + (i * width), glyph->buffer + (i * glyph->pitch), glyph->pitch); WriteTGA("Test.tga", buffer, width, height); } array<Byte>^ values = gcnew array<Byte>(bytes); Marshal::Copy((IntPtr)glyph->buffer, values, 0, bytes); // as *.bmp Bitmap^ systemBitmap = gcnew Bitmap(width, height, PixelFormat::Format24bppRgb); // create bitmap data, lock pixels to be written. • I can't get SetSystemTime to work in Windows Vista using C# with Interop (P/Invoke).

    - by Andrew
    Hi, I'm having a hard time getting SetSystemTime working in my C# code. SetSystemtime is a kernel32.dll function. I'm using P/invoke (interop) to call it. SetSystemtime returns false and the error is "Invalid Parameter". I've posted the code below. I stress that GetSystemTime works just fine. I've tested this on Vista and Windows 7. Based on some newsgroup postings I've seen I have turned off UAC. No difference. I have done some searching for this problem. I found this link: http://groups.google.com.tw/group/microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.interop/browse_thread/thread/805fa8603b00c267 where the problem is reported but no resolution seems to be found. Notice that UAC is also mentioned but I'm not sure this is the problem. Also notice that this gentleman gets no actual Win32Error. Can someone try my code on XP? Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong and how to fix it. If the answer is to somehow change permission settings programatically, I'd need an example. I would have thought turning off UAC should cover that though. I'm not required to use this particular way (SetSystemTime). I'm just trying to introduce some "clock drift" to stress test something. If there's another way to do it, please tell me. Frankly, I'm surprised I need to use Interop to change the system time. I would have thought there is a .NET method. Thank you very much for any help or ideas. Andrew Code: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; namespace SystemTimeInteropTest { class Program { #region ClockDriftSetup [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)] public struct SystemTime { [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.U2)] public short Year; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.U2)] public short Month; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.U2)] public short DayOfWeek; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.U2)] public short Day; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.U2)] public short Hour; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.U2)] public short Minute; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.U2)] public short Second; [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.U2)] public short Milliseconds; } [DllImport("kernel32.dll")] public static extern void GetLocalTime( out SystemTime systemTime); [DllImport("kernel32.dll")] public static extern void GetSystemTime( out SystemTime systemTime); [DllImport("kernel32.dll", SetLastError = true)] public static extern bool SetSystemTime( ref SystemTime systemTime); //[DllImport("kernel32.dll", SetLastError = true)] //public static extern bool SetLocalTime( //ref SystemTime systemTime); [System.Runtime.InteropServices.DllImportAttribute("kernel32.dll", EntryPoint = "SetLocalTime")] [return: System.Runtime.InteropServices.MarshalAsAttribute(System.Runtime.InteropServices.UnmanagedType.Bool)] public static extern bool SetLocalTime([InAttribute()] ref SystemTime lpSystemTime); #endregion ClockDriftSetup static void Main(string[] args) { try { SystemTime sysTime; GetSystemTime(out sysTime); sysTime.Milliseconds += (short)80; sysTime.Second += (short)3000; bool bResult = SetSystemTime(ref sysTime); if (bResult == false) throw new System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception(); } catch (Exception ex) { Console.WriteLine("Drift Error: " + ex.Message); } } } }

  • unsigned char* buffer (FreeType2 Bitmap) to System::Drawing::Bitmap.

• calling delphi dll from c#

I then call GetData but the TMPData structure I get back is incorrect. The FirstName, LastName and Birthday fields are populated but the data is incorrect. Is the mapping correct? ( "array[0..40] of char" equal to "[MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.LPStr, SizeConst = 40)]" )?

  • boost::function & boost::lambda again

    - by John Dibling
    Follow-up to post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2978096/using-width-precision-specifiers-with-boostformat I'm trying to use boost::function to create a function that uses lambdas to format a string with boost::format. Ultimately what I'm trying to achieve is using width & precision specifiers for strings with format. boost::format does not support the use of the * width & precision specifiers, as indicated in the docs: Width or precision set to asterisk (*) are used by printf to read this field from an argument. e.g. printf("%1$d:%2$.*3$d:%4$.*3$d\n", hour, min, precision, sec); This class does not support this mechanism for now. so such precision or width fields are quietly ignored by the parsing. so I'm trying to find other ways to accomplish the same goal. Here is what I have so far, which isn't working: #include <string> #include <boost\function.hpp> #include <boost\lambda\lambda.hpp> #include <iostream> #include <boost\format.hpp> #include <iomanip> #include <boost\bind.hpp> int main() { using namespace boost::lambda; using namespace std; boost::function<std::string(int, std::string)> f = (boost::format("%s") % boost::io::group(setw(_1*2), setprecision(_2*2), _3)).str(); std::string s = (boost::format("%s") % f(15, "Hello")).str(); return 0; } This generates many compiler errors: 1>------ Build started: Project: hacks, Configuration: Debug x64 ------ 1>Compiling... 1>main.cpp 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2872: '_1' : ambiguous symbol 1> could be 'D:\Program Files (x86)\boost\boost_1_42\boost/lambda/core.hpp(69) : boost::lambda::placeholder1_type &boost::lambda::`anonymous-namespace'::_1' 1> or 'D:\Program Files (x86)\boost\boost_1_42\boost/bind/placeholders.hpp(43) : boost::arg<I> `anonymous-namespace'::_1' 1> with 1> [ 1> I=1 1> ] 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2664: 'std::setw' : cannot convert parameter 1 from 'boost::lambda::placeholder1_type' to 'std::streamsize' 1> No user-defined-conversion operator available that can perform this conversion, or the operator cannot be called 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2872: '_2' : ambiguous symbol 1> could be 'D:\Program Files (x86)\boost\boost_1_42\boost/lambda/core.hpp(70) : boost::lambda::placeholder2_type &boost::lambda::`anonymous-namespace'::_2' 1> or 'D:\Program Files (x86)\boost\boost_1_42\boost/bind/placeholders.hpp(44) : boost::arg<I> `anonymous-namespace'::_2' 1> with 1> [ 1> I=2 1> ] 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2664: 'std::setprecision' : cannot convert parameter 1 from 'boost::lambda::placeholder2_type' to 'std::streamsize' 1> No user-defined-conversion operator available that can perform this conversion, or the operator cannot be called 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2872: '_3' : ambiguous symbol 1> could be 'D:\Program Files (x86)\boost\boost_1_42\boost/lambda/core.hpp(71) : boost::lambda::placeholder3_type &boost::lambda::`anonymous-namespace'::_3' 1> or 'D:\Program Files (x86)\boost\boost_1_42\boost/bind/placeholders.hpp(45) : boost::arg<I> `anonymous-namespace'::_3' 1> with 1> [ 1> I=3 1> ] 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2660: 'boost::io::group' : function does not take 3 arguments 1>.\main.cpp(15) : error C2228: left of '.str' must have class/struct/union 1>Build log was saved at "file://c:\Users\john\Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Projects\hacks\x64\Debug\BuildLog.htm" 1>hacks - 7 error(s), 0 warning(s) ========== Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped ========== My fundamental understanding of boost's lambdas and functions is probably lacking.   • Disable antialiasing for a specific GDI device context

    - by Jacob Stanley
    I'm using a third party library to render an image to a GDI DC and I need to ensure that any text is rendered without any smoothing/antialiasing so that I can convert the image to a predefined palette with indexed colors. The third party library i'm using for rendering doesn't support this and just renders text as per the current windows settings for font rendering. They've also said that it's unlikely they'll add the ability to switch anti-aliasing off any time soon. The best work around I've found so far is to call the third party library in this way (error handling and prior settings checks ommitted for brevity): private static void SetFontSmoothing(bool enabled) { int pv = 0; SystemParametersInfo(Spi.SetFontSmoothing, enabled ? 1 : 0, ref pv, Spif.None); } // snip Graphics graphics = Graphics.FromImage(bitmap) IntPtr deviceContext = graphics.GetHdc(); SetFontSmoothing(false); thirdPartyComponent.Render(deviceContext); SetFontSmoothing(true); This obviously has a horrible effect on the operating system, other applications flicker from cleartype enabled to disabled and back every time I render the image. So the question is, does anyone know how I can alter the font rendering settings for a specific DC? Even if I could just make the changes process or thread specific instead of affecting the whole operating system, that would be a big step forward! (That would give me the option of farming this rendering out to a separate process- the results are written to disk after rendering anyway) EDIT: I'd like to add that I don't mind if the solution is more complex than just a few API calls. I'd even be happy with a solution that involved hooking system dlls if it was only about a days work. EDIT: Background Information The third-party library renders using a palette of about 70 colors. After the image (which is actually a map tile) is rendered to the DC, I convert each pixel from it's 32-bit color back to it's palette index and store the result as an 8bpp greyscale image. This is uploaded to the video card as a texture. During rendering, I re-apply the palette (also stored as a texture) with a pixel shader executing on the video card. This allows me to switch and fade between different palettes instantaneously instead of needing to regenerate all the required tiles. It takes between 10-60 seconds to generate and upload all the tiles for a typical view of the world. EDIT: Renamed GraphicsDevice to Graphics The class GraphicsDevice in the previous version of this question is actually System.Drawing.Graphics. I had renamed it (using GraphicsDevice = ...) because the code in question is in the namespace MyCompany.Graphics and the compiler wasn't able resolve it properly. EDIT: Success! I even managed to port the PatchIat function below to C# with the help of Marshal.GetFunctionPointerForDelegate. The .NET interop team really did a fantastic job! I'm now using the following syntax, where Patch is an extension method on System.Diagnostics.ProcessModule: module.Patch( "Gdi32.dll", "CreateFontIndirectA", (CreateFontIndirectA original) => font => { font->lfQuality = NONANTIALIASED_QUALITY; return original(font); }); private unsafe delegate IntPtr CreateFontIndirectA(LOGFONTA* lplf); private const int NONANTIALIASED_QUALITY = 3; [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)] private struct LOGFONTA { public int lfHeight; public int lfWidth; public int lfEscapement; public int lfOrientation; public int lfWeight; public byte lfItalic; public byte lfUnderline; public byte lfStrikeOut; public byte lfCharSet; public byte lfOutPrecision; public byte lfClipPrecision; public byte lfQuality; public byte lfPitchAndFamily; public unsafe fixed sbyte lfFaceName [32]; }

  • Vista/7: How to get glass color?

    - by Ian Boyd
    How do you use DwmGetColorizationColor? The documentation says it returns two values: a 32-bit 0xAARRGGBB containing the color used for glass composition a boolean parameter that is true "if the color is an opaque blend" (whatever that means) Here's a color that i like, a nice puke green: You can notice the color is greeny, and the translucent title bar (against a white background) shows the snot color very clearly: i try to get the color from Windows: DwmGetColorizationColor(dwCcolorization, bIsOpaqueBlend); And i get dwColorization: 0x0D0A0F04 bIsOpaqueBlend: false According to the documentation this value is of the format AARRGGBB, and so contains: AA: 0x0D (13) RR: 0x0A (10) GG: 0x0F (15) BB: 0x04 (4) This supposedly means that the color is (10, 15, 4), with an opacity of ~5.1%. But if you actually look at this RGB value, it's nowhere near my desired snot green. Here is (10, 15, 4) with zero opacity (the original color), and (10,15,4) with 5% opacity against a white/checkerboard background: So the question is: How to get glass color in Windows Vista/7? i tried using DwmGetColorizationColor, but that doesn't work very well. A person with same problem, but a nicer shiny picture to attract you squirrels: So, it boils down to – DwmGetColorizationColor is completely unusable for applications attempting to apply the current color onto an opaque surface. i love this guy's screenshots much better than mine. Using his screenshots as a template, i made up a few more sparklies: For the last two screenshots, the alpha blended chip is a true partially transparent PNG, blending to your browser's background. Cool! (i'm such a geek) Edit 2: Had to arrange them in rainbow color. (i'm such a geek) Edit 3: Well now i of course have to add Yellow. Undocumented/Unsupported/Fragile Workarounds There is an undocumented export from DwmApi.dll at entry point 137, which we'll call DwmGetColorizationParameters: HRESULT GetColorizationParameters_Undocumented(out DWMCOLORIZATIONPARAMS params); struct DWMCOLORIZATIONPARAMS { public UInt32 ColorizationColor; public UInt32 ColorizationAfterglow; public UInt32 ColorizationColorBalance; public UInt32 ColorizationAfterglowBalance; public UInt32 ColorizationBlurBalance; public UInt32 ColorizationGlassReflectionIntensity; public UInt32 ColorizationOpaqueBlend; } We're interested in the first parameter: ColorizationColor. We can also read the value out of the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM ColorizationColor: REG_DWORD = 0x6614A600 So you pick your poison of creating appcompat issues. You can rely on an undocumented API (which is bad, bad, bad, and can go away at any time) use an undocumented registry key (which is also bad, and can go away at any time) See also Is there a list of valid parameter combinations for GetThemeColor / Visual Styles API How does Windows change Aero Glass color? DWM - Colorization Color Handling Using DWMGetColorizationColor Retrieving Aero Glass base color for opaque surface rendering i've been wanting to ask this question for over a year now. i always knew that it's impossible to answer, and that the only way to get anyone to actually pay attention is to have colorful screenshots; developers are attracted to shiny things. But on the downside it means i had to put all kinds of work into making the lures.

  • Serial port : Read data problem, not reading complete data

    - by Anuj Mehta
    Hi I have an application where I am sending data via serial port from PC1 (Java App) and reading that data in PC2 (C++ App). The problem that I am facing is that my PC2 (C++ App) is not able to read complete data sent by PC1 i.e. from my PC1 I am sending 190 bytes but PC2 is able to read close to 140 bytes though I am trying to read in a loop. Below is code snippet of my C++ App Open the connection to serial port serialfd = open( serialPortName.c_str(), O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY | O_NDELAY); if (serialfd == -1) { /* * Could not open the port. */ TRACE << "Unable to open port: " << serialPortName << endl; } else { TRACE << "Connected to serial port: " << serialPortName << endl; fcntl(serialfd, F_SETFL, 0); } Configure the Serial Port parameters struct termios options; /* * Get the current options for the port... */ tcgetattr(serialfd, &options); /* * Set the baud rates to 9600... */ cfsetispeed(&options, B38400); cfsetospeed(&options, B38400); /* * 8N1 * Data bits - 8 * Parity - None * Stop bits - 1 */ options.c_cflag &= ~PARENB; options.c_cflag &= ~CSTOPB; options.c_cflag &= ~CSIZE; options.c_cflag |= CS8; /* * Enable hardware flow control */ options.c_cflag |= CRTSCTS; /* * Enable the receiver and set local mode... */ options.c_cflag |= (CLOCAL | CREAD); // Flush the earlier data tcflush(serialfd, TCIFLUSH); /* * Set the new options for the port... */ tcsetattr(serialfd, TCSANOW, &options); Now I am reading data const int MAXDATASIZE = 512; std::vector<char> m_vRequestBuf; char buffer[MAXDATASIZE]; int totalBytes = 0; fcntl(serialfd, F_SETFL, FNDELAY); while(1) { bytesRead = read(serialfd, &buffer, MAXDATASIZE); if(bytesRead == -1) { //Sleep for some time and read again usleep(900000); } else { totalBytes += bytesRead; //Add data read to vector for(int i =0; i < bytesRead; i++) { m_vRequestBuf.push_back(buffer[i]); } int newBytesRead = 0; //Now keep trying to read more data while(newBytesRead != -1) { //clear contents of buffer memset((void*)&buffer, 0, sizeof(char) * MAXDATASIZE); newBytesRead = read(serialfd, &buffer, MAXDATASIZE); totalBytes += newBytesRead; for(int j = 0; j < newBytesRead; j++) { m_vRequestBuf.push_back(buffer[j]); } }//inner while break; } //while

  • Clear data at serial port in Linux in C?

    - by ipkiss
    Hello guys, I am testing the sending and receiving programs with the code as The main() function is below: include include include include include include include "read_write.h" int fd; int initport(int fd) { struct termios options; // Get the current options for the port... tcgetattr(fd, &options); // Set the baud rates to 19200... cfsetispeed(&options, B9600); cfsetospeed(&options, B9600); // Enable the receiver and set local mode... options.c_cflag |= (CLOCAL | CREAD); options.c_cflag &= ~PARENB; options.c_cflag &= ~CSTOPB; options.c_cflag &= ~CSIZE; options.c_cflag |= CS8; // Set the new options for the port... tcsetattr(fd, TCSANOW, &options); return 1; } int main(int argc, char **argv) { fd = open("/dev/pts/2", O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY | O_NDELAY); if (fd == -1) { perror("open_port: Unable to open /dev/pts/1 - "); return 1; } else { fcntl(fd, F_SETFL, 0); } printf("baud=%d\n", getbaud(fd)); initport(fd); printf("baud=%d\n", getbaud(fd)); char sCmd[254]; sCmd[0] = 0x41; sCmd[1] = 0x42; sCmd[2] = 0x43; sCmd[3] = 0x00; if (!writeport(fd, sCmd)) { printf("write failed\n"); close(fd); return 1; } printf("written:%s\n", sCmd); usleep(500000); char sResult[254]; fcntl(fd, F_SETFL, FNDELAY); if (!readport(fd,sResult)) { printf("read failed\n"); close(fd); return 1; } printf("readport=%s\n", sResult); close(fd); return 0; } read_write.h: #include <stdio.h> /* Standard input/output definitions */ include /* String function definitions */ include /* UNIX standard function definitions */ include /* File control definitions */ include /* Error number definitions */ include /* POSIX terminal control definitions */ int writeport(int fd, char *chars) { int len = strlen(chars); chars[len] = 0x0d; // stick a after the command chars[len+1] = 0x00; // terminate the string properly int n = write(fd, chars, strlen(chars)); if (n < 0) { fputs("write failed!\n", stderr); return 0; } return 1; } int readport(int fd, char *result) { int iIn = read(fd, result, 254); result[iIn-1] = 0x00; if (iIn < 0) { if (errno == EAGAIN) { printf("SERIAL EAGAIN ERROR\n"); return 0; } else { printf("SERIAL read error %d %s\n", errno, strerror(errno)); return 0; } } return 1; } and got the issue: In order to test with serial port, I used the socat (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualSerialPort ) to create a pair serial ports on Linux and test my program with these port. The first time the program sends the data and the program receives data is ok. However, if I read again or even re-write the new data into the serial port, the return data is always null until I stop the virtual serial port and start it again, then the write and read data is ok, but still, only one time. (In the real case, the sending part will be done by another device, I am just taking care of the reading data from the serial port. I wrote both parts just to test my reading code.) Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks a lot.

  • Feedback on iterating over type-safe enums

    - by Sumant
    In response to the earlier SO question "Enumerate over an enum in C++", I came up with the following reusable solution that uses type-safe enum idiom. I'm just curious to see the community feedback on my solution. This solution makes use of a static array, which is populated using type-safe enum objects before first use. Iteration over enums is then simply reduced to iteration over the array. I'm aware of the fact that this solution won't work if the enumerators are not strictly increasing. template<typename def, typename inner = typename def::type> class safe_enum : public def { typedef typename def::type type; inner val; static safe_enum array[def::end - def::begin]; static bool init; static void initialize() { if(!init) // use double checked locking in case of multi-threading. { unsigned int size = def::end - def::begin; for(unsigned int i = 0, j = def::begin; i < size; ++i, ++j) array[i] = static_cast<typename def::type>(j); init = true; } } public: safe_enum(type v = def::begin) : val(v) {} inner underlying() const { return val; } static safe_enum * begin() { initialize(); return array; } static safe_enum * end() { initialize(); return array + (def::end - def::begin); } bool operator == (const safe_enum & s) const { return this->val == s.val; } bool operator != (const safe_enum & s) const { return this->val != s.val; } bool operator < (const safe_enum & s) const { return this->val < s.val; } bool operator <= (const safe_enum & s) const { return this->val <= s.val; } bool operator > (const safe_enum & s) const { return this->val > s.val; } bool operator >= (const safe_enum & s) const { return this->val >= s.val; } }; template <typename def, typename inner> safe_enum<def, inner> safe_enum<def, inner>::array[def::end - def::begin]; template <typename def, typename inner> bool safe_enum<def, inner>::init = false; struct color_def { enum type { begin, red = begin, green, blue, end }; }; typedef safe_enum<color_def> color; template <class Enum> void f(Enum e) { std::cout << static_cast<unsigned>(e.underlying()) << std::endl; } int main() { std::for_each(color::begin(), color::end(), &f<color>); color c = color::red; }

  • I don't understand how work call_once

    - by SABROG
    Please help me understand how work call_once Here is thread-safe code. I don't understand why this need Thread Local Storage and global_epoch variables. Variable _fast_pthread_once_per_thread_epoch can be changed to constant/enum like {FAST_PTHREAD_ONCE_INIT, BEING_INITIALIZED, FINISH_INITIALIZED}. Why needed count calls in global_epoch? I think this code can be rewriting with logc: if flag FINISH_INITIALIZED do nothing, else go to block with mutexes and this all. #ifndef FAST_PTHREAD_ONCE_H #define FAST_PTHREAD_ONCE_H #include #include typedef sig_atomic_t fast_pthread_once_t; #define FAST_PTHREAD_ONCE_INIT SIG_ATOMIC_MAX extern __thread fast_pthread_once_t _fast_pthread_once_per_thread_epoch; #ifdef __cplusplus extern "C" { #endif extern void fast_pthread_once( pthread_once_t *once, void (*func)(void) ); inline static void fast_pthread_once_inline( fast_pthread_once_t *once, void (*func)(void) ) { fast_pthread_once_t x = *once; /* unprotected access */ if ( x _fast_pthread_once_per_thread_epoch ) { fast_pthread_once( once, func ); } } #ifdef __cplusplus } #endif #endif FAST_PTHREAD_ONCE_H Source fast_pthread_once.c The source is written in C.
