• Looking for speech-to-text tool (convert .wav to text)

  I have the ability to get .wav files of voice mails emailed to me, but sometimes I'll be sitting in a meeting and I need to know the content of a message without playing it out loud. Are there any good (and, preferably, free) tools for converting .wav files to text? I know Google Voice has this capability, but I can't determine if it'll work on a file-by-file basis. I realize that this is a difficult research problem, but even an 80% solution might be workable.

• Any tips to extend battery life under 'Bootcamped' Win 7

  I have a late 2008 MacBook and have recently installed Windows 7 via Bootcamp. Under OSX I can get about 4 hours of web browsing and general usage but under 7 that is slashed to about 2 hours. I know it's not a 'Windows being rubbish thing' but is there any settings I can change or updated drivers to improve this? (I'm already using Bootcamp 3.1).

• Cron Tips for not running cron jobs on holidays (the monday of a three day weekend)

  We have about a one hundred machine set-up with each machine running cron jobs like starting and stopping services and archiving these services' log files at the end of the day to a centralized repository. One headache we have is the three-day weekend (we're closed on holidays). We don't want the services starting up on those days and connecting to our business partner's machines. We currently do this by manually commenting out the most critical jobs and letting a bunch of errors happen all day. Not ideal. Basically if a job has '1-5' set in the day field we want this to mean 'work days' and not Monday to Friday'. We have a database that keeps track of which days are indeed 'work days' So, is it possible to override Cron's day-matching algorithm, or is there some other way to easily set a cron setting to avoid things starting up on a Monday holiday? • VNC as a Support Tool Over the Internet

  I'd like to set up an environment where I can use VNC to remotely support my clients over the internet. No VPNs involved. I've used the UltraVNC repeater in the past, but the problem is that it requires a dedicated Windows server. What I'd like to do is as follows: VNC Client (me) - NAT - Internet - NAT - VNC Server (the person I'm offering support to) I'd basically like the same functionality that the UltraVNC repeater offers, but the only internet environment I have to host something on is a Linux shared server (standard hosting - PHP, Apache, etc.). Requirements: Multiple platform support for both Client and Server - specifically Mac and Windows Allows for connection with multiple NATs involved (Client and Server side) Will allow me to use my existing hosting environment for any repeater that might be involved I believe the way this would work is that the Server (the person I'm offering support to) when online would connect to a listener on the internet. When they needed support I would connect my Client to the same listener, see them connected, and use the listener (man-in-the-middle) to piggyback my Client to connect to their Server. I'm open to using any software (not limiting myself to VNC) but would prefer a FOSS solution (which is why I'm leaning towards VNC). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Good Free Backup Tool - with provisos

  I have seen some Backup Questions around. But they are not quite what I am looking for. I would like to have a back up of my entire hard drive (to an external drive). I would like it to be the kind that has a base backup then just backs up the changes since the last backup. I would like it to be able to have a fully restorable image of my hard drive (not just key files). Lastly I would like it to be free (or super cheap). (The above requirements are important, but I will have to drop them if they up the price as my boss will not pay for them.) I have a Solid State Hard Drive 250 GB backing up to a 1TB external hard drive using Windows XP.

• Simple Image Capture Tool for Mac OS X that uses FireWire

  I have Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) on a G4 Powerbook and a camcorder with a firewire device. It doesn't have iMovie, which is now part of the separate iLife Suite and requires an Intel Mac. Anyway, Image Capture does not recognize the firewire video feed as an image capture device. What software would give me the simplest "capture this frame from live firewire video feed to image" functionality.

  I am working on legacy projects with thousands of files spanning more than 10 projects. I am wondering what other people are using for searching string in a text file. I am using windows and i typically search on 10,000 files to make sure some code is not called from other places. I've tried numerous text search tools mentioned here such as Actual Search & Replace, Ultraedit, notepad++ but they all take very long time to search due to the large # of files they have to look into.

• Turn off email notification from abrt (Automatic Bug Reporting Tool)

  I'm configuring CentOS 6.2 and have seen a few "[abrt] full crash report" emails. I understand that abrt is useful for creating crash dumps and what not, so I don't want to disable the service, I just would like to stop getting the crash report emails. I probably have to add something to the config file in /etc/abrt/abrt.conf. I can't seem to find anything in my searches. Any idea? Thanks. Edit: Here is my abrt.conf, which is rather simple. • Tool to annotate pictures (screenshots) for documentation purposes?

  Long time ago, I saw someone use a software (on Windows) that was specifically created to annotate pictures. It made it simple to add arrows, boxes, circles in "outstanding" colors to the image. Unfortunatly, I don't remember what program that was. Now, I have to document a GUI and I'd like to use this software in order to annotate screenshots of the software so that I can show the order of flow and dependencies between various aspects of the GUI. I'd be very happy if someone could point me into the right direction.

  Is there a script that will show memory usage as a graph, for example as a pie-chart, with each process being being a separate slice? I'm not looking for something like Munin to graph memory usage over time, but rather show the memory usage per-process at a single point in time. To make my request even more obscure, it is for a headless server (so no X applications). The simplest way would be to write a PNG file, or possibly an HTML file (which could use Javascript to allow the filtering of processes, changing between graph-types and so on)

  Aside from personal passwords, I'm always juggling a number of project-specific passwords, including those for network, web and database authentication. Some authentication can be managed with ssh keys and the like, but everywhere I've worked I also faced the need for the management of passwords that need to be available to a number of different people. So what do you use, either for personal or team-based password management? Personally I'd like to hear about cross-platform tools, but I'm sure other people would be satisfied with Windows-only solutions. I know the stackoverflow podcast tackled this issue in #7 and #9, but I'm hoping we can come up with the definitive answer here. • Unable to Get IIS Response Times with Hyperic Monitoring Tool

  We have a very large .NET application (vendor) that I am trying to gather performance metrics for using Hyperic. In general I wanted to be able to report response times for each of the components within the application, which include: Web Services ASP.NET Pages MSMQ I am currently unable to successfully monitor the response times for IIS on my windows machines. I have successfully auto-discovered them and I am getting diagnostic information, but am not getting back the response times. After looking online at what other people are seeing, I found that I am missing a tab for the response times which is usually next to the metrics tab. Also, when I look at the configuration screen for IIS I do not see a field which enables me to specify where the log files are located at. Please note that my logs are located at e:\LogFiles\ instead of the usual location because our IT staff doesn't allocate much space for the C: drive. Please note that I have the MSMQ monitors up and running great. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jeremy

  I will teach Linux to people of the ages 20-75 with no prior Linux knowledge. I want to teach some basic concepts (what's an OS, what's a file system) and some practical knowlede: How to install it, network configuration, set up email client, installing software with a packet manager, etc. I have held a system administrators course in the past, but was under the impression that my method of teaching was not adequate. I've explained what I was about to show, showed students on the projector, told them to repeat it on their computers and summarized what they should have learned. They could ask questions all the time. But I fear they remembered only one-third of the knowledge I taught them. I have two questions here: Are there better methods to teach this particular subject in a classroom equipped with computers? Are there some tricks that "slow me down" when I teach stuff that I know inside-out?

• Software Diagnostics Tool recommendations for Debugging a Windows 8 freeze

  I've had my HP Pavillion dv6 laptop since last November - and it has had 8GB RAM and a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD installed since the start. I use it for software development and it's had a Windows 8 RTM installation since early September. Yesterday I had to give a presentation at a customer site - so used Powerpoint for the first time since installing Win8... since that point my machine has 'frozen' every 2 hours or so after startup. There doesn't seem to be any easy to see reason behind the freeze - the system just freezes, even if I have left it idle with just a desktop there. My immediate suspicion is that the SSD is the mostly likely cause of the problem. I've looked at some of the questions on here - e.g. How do I troubleshoot hardware issues related to a computer freeze/crash? - but don't really want to start taking my laptop apart. Another suspicion is that this might be related to the WiFi adapter (Broadcom 802.11n) since I have noticed that this doesn't seem to play perfectly with things like Hyper-V in Win8. Can anyone recommend any software diagnostic tools that I can run in order to evaluate the health of the SSD or of other parts of the system? Thanks Stuart P.S. I doubt Powerpoint is the cause of this, but I may use it as an excuse never to use it again... More realistically perhaps something got damaged during travel to the customer site?
