• Ethernet on an Acer Aspire One D255E not working

  Ok very frustrated here, but hopefully can find an answer here. I have an Acer Aspire One netbook D255E. I installed 10.04 desktop edition via live USB, only to find out ethernet is not connecting. The thing is, I had installed previously 10.04 thru wubi as 30GB, but wanted more so did this install. With the Wubi install it worked great internet worked added LibO, mint menu ect. So I know it could work, and it works on Win 7(what little GB is left). I have ethernet enabled, and gave myself all permissions, but still not working. Thank you for any help, and if you do more details in the steps i need to take the better :).

  The trolls are driving me crazy; I'd like to experiment with a secret ban. http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2011/06/suspension-ban-or-hellban.html A hellbanned user is invisible to all other users, but crucially, not himself. From their perspective, they are participating normally in the community but nobody ever responds to them. They can no longer disrupt the community because they are effectively a ghost. It's a clever way of enforcing the "don't feed the troll" rule in the community. When nothing they post ever gets a response, a hellbanned user is likely to get bored or frustrated and leave. It looks like there's no way to do this out-of-the-box with phpbb. Is there a way to hack it in?

• Proprietary AMD driver freezes my Ideapad

  I got this problem that I can't figure out what to do about. On Ideapad s205 with Ubuntu 12.04* (64), if I install Catalyst Centre 12.1 or newer it Freeze (lock's up), 1-3 times a day. It doesn't suffer freezing when using Radeon driver, but Radeon driver are considerably slower and flickers, so I would really prefer the proprietary driver (with no freezing). I reported the bug to launchpad but it doesn't get attention. -Also tried Ubuntu forums. Reported bug to AMD bug site "http://ati.cchtml.com/", but I don't think anybody reads it. Wrote AMD support several times, but get silly answers like "reinstall Windows". -Asked them to send the bug to Linux driver developers, but never heard a thing (more than once). The same nothing happens when writing to the feedback link from AMD driver download site. I'm so frustrated here, any advice would help. Thanks (*The same on Ubuntu 11.10)

• Why does my program stutter so much?

  I've been very frustrated trying to solve this. I've looked it up, and all the answers are the same: set IsFixedTimeStep = false. This doesn't help me at all, the program is still jittery and stutters. I have absolutely no idea what is going on, can you guys help? • The /usr/bin/x11 folder

  Why does the /usr/bin/x11 folder hold another x11 folder and when you open that === x11 you get another x11 and then another and another??? I did it about 6 times and got frustrated so I have no idea how deep this goes but What is the purpose (or is it a glich?)? Is this eating disk space more than it should? (I was going to delete one or more but thought I better ask first before I end up !fucked ) and finally Is it just me and I am going crazy maybe the pills are wearing off or maybe they are kicking in.. I am not sure but an answer would help. I can see no reason why this should be happening at all.

  I think I've seen "questions" like this on stackoverflow but sorry if I'm overstepping any bounds. Inspired by my recent question and all the nice answers (Checklist for finished game?) I think every gamedev out there has something he/she thinks that almost every game should have. That knowledge is welcome here! So this is probably going to be an inspirational subjective list of some sorts and the point is that anyone reading this question will see a point or two that they've overlooked in their own development and might benefit from adding. I think a good example might be: "some sort of manual or help section. Of course it should be proportional to how advanced the game is. Some users won't need it and won't go looking for it but the other ones that do will become very frustrated if they can't remember how to do something specific that should be in the manual". A bad example might be "good gameplay". Of course every game benefits from this but the answer is not very helpful.

• Sending files via HTTP to web service

  I am bit frustrated at the lack of information about this online. Here is the issue: I am in charge of creating a iOS application which sends sound data back and forth between the server and the app. The Audio is in small files and thus does not need to be streamed over, but rather it can be sent. Right now, I am using a TCP server I wrote to handle applications like this. However, I want to keep the system as simple as possible and writing your own server and client sockets can get a bit complex and leaves room for crashes. Overall it slows down development because I need to account for packet structure and other things. My question is, can I write an ASPX or PHP web service that lets me pass the files back and forth through GET or POST?

• How to add a printer in gnome-shell

  I'm using Gnome Shell (although I'm not sure whether the "Printers" app is part of that or just part of Gnome). I go to "Printers" from the overview, click the + button on the bottom left, choose network and then see a message "FirewallD is not running. Network printer detection needs services mdns, ipp, ipp-client and samba-client enabled on firewall.". It's not auto detected anything. There's an Address box and a Search by Address tickbox, but neither seem to do anything. I'm frustrated because I know all the details of the printer, but have nowhere to put them in. Automation is supposed to make things easier, no? For example I know the printer is at lpd://10.67.5.3/lp1 but I can't put this in anywhere. Is there a GUI that works, or have I misunderstood how to use it?

Yes, they are flashy, and have some decent degree of flexibility with their GS plan, which I have. But anytime I install a site that needs a database, it is slow. like really slow. Taking anywhere from 10 - 15 seconds just to load a page. I would host in house, but there are a lot of complications that come with a LAMP server that I don't want to deal with. Honestly, I'd rather spend the time developing. What can you recommend?

• Is programming for me?

  I have an IT background and was pretty confident until an opportunity came up at work to go into programming(C#). I have never programmed before this. Plus the software I am programming for is a program I have never used before(a 3D modeling software). It has been 6 months..I feel like giving up. Not much training...about 3 weeks of training spread out over the last 6 months. I think I would be good at programming but this experience has kinda making me rethink my decision. • Making it myself vs. modifying someone else's code as a beginner

  I just started getting into open source projects mainly for the learning experience. I've made a few tiny contributions to some small projects. Most of my time has been spent just reading over other people's code and trying to understand how it works. Often times I find myself frustrated by a lack of documentation and unit tests. There are also times where I think I can see a more intuitive solution to a problem, but implementing it would require large restructuring of code. I see all this and wonder to myself why I don't just start clean on the whole thing by myself and do things "the right way"? I'd also enjoy the experience of building it from scratch, as it would force me to learn skills that I might not learn by working on other people's code. On the other hand, working on other people's code is also a great experience because it requires me to understand and work with other people's code and collaborate with them. It's just harder, IMO. Thoughts?

  You ever try to implement something simple but for some strange reason it doesn't work. So you try a possible solution but then something else doesn't work. You keep trying different workarounds but every time something different isn't working. Every time you get one step closer you also get one (or more) step farther from solving this problem and its now been 3 hours when this should have taken you 10 minutes. And it still isn't solved. There is no one in your company who can help, and you are about to put your fist through your screen. At this point you are so frustrated you can no longer think about the problem clearly. • How to use unused space in ubuntu

  I installed ubuntu on my machine with only 80 GB of memory anticipating that I will remove it later but now I want to keep it forever (until I am frustrated with linux). I have 500 GB in my machine and now I want to use that raw 420 GB of space. How I can I do that ? with "space/memory" I am referring to secondary memory not Ram. • Newbie needs to learn basic file management

  I have been using Ubuntu for abut 2 weeks and and still frustrated by simple file operations. I want to find a file called 9.jpg. Every internal command 3-rd party program I have tried also gives me 99.jpg, 999.jpg, lovepotion number9.jpg and a zillion other similar ones. How do you search for an EXACT file name WITHOUT wildcards? This is only my most recent frustration. I'm obviously missing something basic. good tutorial anywhere?

• G5 quad core will not boot from Ubuntu CD

  I have a PPC G5 Quad Core with Leopard on one hard drive and I want to install Ubuntu on a second hard drive. The second drive is installed and formatted as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) drive. I have had no success booting from a CD or DVD with various PPC versions of Ubuntu using any of the suggested keys such as "C, Option, or anything else. Booting into open firmware doesn't work as the system can't find the \install\yaboot file. I am using various CD's burned as iso disk images, but none will boot. I have reset the PRAM, etc, to no avail. Beginning to get very frustrated. Can someone shed some light and provide me with a command line in open firmware that will work, or else direct me to a confirmed PPC bootable version of Ubuntu please? I'd appreciate any help you can provide....

  I'm writing an architecture/technical documentation for an inhouse project and I'm becoming more and more frustrated with Microsoft Word as I seem to use most of my time getting things to align correctly. Word has horrible usability issues but I didn't come here to rant, rather I'd like to know whether there exists something more suitable for the job. The point of this documentation is to provide a "big picture" of the system, and as such I'm not generating documentation from source code but rather writing it all by hand. Are there any alternatives to Microsoft Word for writing properly formatted technical documentation with less frustration?

  I'm hoping there's a book or something out there for me to get... If I have a class that has Collection as an instance variable, what is that method of coding called? A design pattern? If so, where can I find more information on it? As I've been working with this mentor, he's really helped me understand my programming weakness and that weakness is thinking in terms of collections or relationships between objects. • Failing to install Ubuntu 13.04

  I have a new Windows 8 Sony Vaio SVF14A15CXB laptop that has UEFI and I have been struggling through an Ubuntu installation. I have a bootable Ubuntu DVD+R and I have managed to mess with my BIOS/UEFI so that it boots. I have used Windows 8 to create a desired hard disk partition and installed Ubuntu there, and have burned a boot-repair http://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair-cd/home/Home/ and rEFInd http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/getting.html disk and neither will boot. I know I should continue googling and struggling, but I am getting frustrated. Thanks to anyone who gives me the time of day.

I have decided to go with the wind and applying for programming languages as my specialization.But I know how to code,write test cases,how Perosnal and commercial IT insurances solution works.What I do not know is how to show that what I will do during my masters.I have no idea about what to showcase, how would my work ex will help me. totally oblivious thoughts... thanks waiting for replies....

• Not your typical Permission Denied Question

  I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 11.10 (64 Bit) on my computer. (My hard drive took a powder) Before, I could "mv" files around with the command. Now when I try I get the permission denied message. I also get the message about "man sudo" when I open my terminal. I am pretty sure I did not get that before. Can I add a user/administrator and change something in my orginal admin that I cannot change myself? I am getting really frustrated with this. I do not recall having the same problem before. I tried qksudo nautilus and it appears to run then it sits there with the cursor blinking but does not move.

• Help installing?

  I'm having a really big problem with installing Ubuntu on my computer. It seems that when I try to install from BIOS from the CD, nothing happens, and when I say nothing happens it boots up my computer like usual. When I try to install from the CD from My Computer directly from the wubi.exe file, nothing happens. THEN when I try to install from the boot helper, it gives me this error: An error occurred: Could not retrieve the required installation files For more information please see the log file: c:\users\Meghan\appdata\local\temp\wubi-14.04-rev286.log Will it help if I say I have a pirated version of Windows? Maybe that's why? I'm frustrated, and I'm not sure what to do. Please help me
