• Using Subversion with SQL Server Management Studio

  I am a member of a team with 3 developers. We have started using Redmine here for project management and issue tracking and LOVE it. I have seen elsewhere how nicely Redmine can work when a back-end repository is set up for a project. There is nice integration all around. This shop is currently .Net and SQL Server 2005. I am thinking about recommending a move to Subversion for our VCS (so that we can integrate with Redmine). I have seen a product called VisualSVN which will make it possible to use Visual Studio with Subversion, so that covers .Net. But the other big question is if it is possible to configure SQL Server Management Studio to somehow use Subversion for its VCS. Has anyone done this? This shop is currently using Sourcegear Fortress.

Microsoft has recently released Windows Management Framework 3.0 for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 systems, which includes some nice things native to Windows Server 2012 (like PowerShell 3.0) and lots of improvements to WMI, WinRM and other management technologies. Windows Update is advertising it as an optional update. Should I install it on my servers?

• Re-deploy Reports on SCOM Management Packs

  I've migrated Reporting Services on a SCOM 2007 R2 install, and noticed that the reports have not being copied. I can create a new report, but the ones I've had because of the management packs are gone. I've tried re-applying the Management Packs however it doesn't re-deploy them and when I try to access for example: Monitoring - Microsoft Windows Print Server - Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and 2003 Print Services - State View - select any item and click Alerts on the right menu. I get the following error: Date: 12/24/2010 12:40:35 PM Application: System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Application Version: 6.1.7221.0 Severity: Error Message: Cannot initialize report. Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportServerException: The item '/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Library/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Alert' cannot be found.   I have found similar questions here but the answer are either outdated or are from the command line. The case is this. I have an EC2 instance using instance store (this was the only AMI available for Debian 6 in Ireland). Now through the AWS GUI I can do a snapshot of the instance volume and/or even create a volume. But an image made from the snapshot doesn't boot. What is the best solution to either clone an EC2 instance that uses instance store OR from the created snapshot of the instance store to launch a new EBS instance (identical clone) FROM the gui aws management console and not command line ? Before turning this down consider that there is not similar question on how to do it via the aws management console. hint can't be done is not an appropriate answer. As you can create a snapshot of the instance store backed instance and/or a volume and create an AMI from that snapshot.

• Can't connect disk management to remote XP PC from local Win7/Server 2008

  Scenario as follows: support technicians using Windows 7 PC's or Server 2008 terminal server are unable to connect Disk Management MMC snap in to a remote PC when the remote device is running Windows XP. "Disk management could not start Virtual Disk Service (VDS) on ". This can happen if the remote computer does not support VDS, or if a connection cannot be established because it was blocked by Windows Firewall." Connecting from another XP machine or 2003 server to the same XP machines works fine. Even connecting from XP/2003 to the Win7 or 2008 server works fine. Windows firewall disabled on all devices. I'm guessing this is something to do with the fact that XP uses logical disk manager service whereas Win7/2008 use Virtual disk manager service. But there doesn't seem to be any way to use logical disk manager service from 7/2008 to connect to XP...

  Our software development team is growing very quickly. We have around 250 developers working on about 20 different projects. The majority of development is focused around Visual Studio. The release management procedure is getting a little strained now, with users competing for time and resources on various "official" build and signing servers. What I'm looking for is information on how to setup a proper, managed release process in a Microsoft environment. Ideally, I'd like some kind of continuous integration or nightly builds, integration of version control into Visual Studio and the ability to sign binaries after QA is complete. I guess what I'm looking for is any documentation or white papers on Release Management in a Visual Studio environment. Can anyone help?

• Color Management, Linux, Photoshop C2 via Wine

  I am new to Color Management CMS, so doing it on Linux, and then throw Wine into the mix ... and I am a little lost. However, I have Photoshop CS2 running okay with Crossover Professional on Ubuntu 9.10. I have a Canon 450D (Rebel XSI) and I imagine I will be able to find a profile for my printer. I ordered a Huey Calibrator (yet to come). I guess I will run into problems with Nvidia Twinview, but one calibrated monitor is good enough for now. Am I going to be able to get color management from Camera -- Monitor -- Print? Most specifically, when I get the Monitor profile loaded with something like xcalib, will Photoshop CS2 run through wine (crossover Pro) understand that? Will I need to select specific things / profiles in photoshop under the edit::Color Settings menu? I found several pages on http://jcornuz.wordpress.com/ helpful, but am wondering about the Wine issue, and anything else anyone can do to help.

• IBM storage ds3400 Cant connect to management using fiber

  i have a problem with a DS3400 IBM storage system we bought a few years back. when i try to manage the storage using its IBM storage management i cant find it using automatic detection even though its connected directly using the fiber and i can see the Logical drives connected and working properly. when i tried to connect the two management Ethernet wires and manage the storage directly by entering the IP address manually i am able to connect however after i make several changes to the controller configuration one of the controllers stops responding and i am not able to ping it directly (since you cant make any changes without being connected to both controllers this is a problem) whats more bizarre is that when i change the IP of the controller that doesn't respond it starts working .. i have found some articles over the web explaining stuff about LUN31 being missing and causing similar problems however all my attempts to manually configure it failed . *link to an example http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5075711 in short im trying to get my storage to appear in the storage manager when directly connected using only the fiber cable directly attached. thanks in advance

• CentOS Default ACLs on Existing File System Objects

  Is there a way to have existing file system objects inherit newly set default ACL settings of their parent directories? The reason I need to do this is that I have an user who connect via SFTP to my server. They are able to change directories in their FTP client and see the root folder and the rest of the server. They don't have permissions to change or edit anything but their own user directory but I would like to prevent them from even view the contents of other directories. Is there a better way to do this than ACLs? If ACLs are the way to go I'm assuming a default ACL on the root directory would be the best way to do restrict access. I could then selectively give the user permission to view certain directories. The problem is default ACLs are only inherited by new file system objects and not existing ones.

• Missing management console for Symantec Antivirus, Corporate Edition

  I work for a small (80 employees) non-profit organization. We have a Windows network with a domain. The file server is running Server 2003. A vendor recently installed Symantec Antivirus, Corporate Edition, ver. 10.1.8.8000. It used to be the case that when I logged in to the file server as administrator, I would see an icon on the desktop that took me to the management console for the antivirus software. I could check logs, statuses of client machines, set policies, etc. That icon is now missing, and I can't find anything relevant under the "Start" menu. There is an entry for Symantec Antivirus, but that only gives me the panel for the client process, not the overall management console for the whole network. I don't want to call the vendor back to fix this (I'm baffled how we lost the icon in the first place). Can someone offer some guidance?

• Can I make my drives visible and change their partition type without losing my data?

  I have made a lot of mistakes and now I cannot see my hard disk nor I can start my operating system on my laptop. All my passwords and important files on my hdd without any backup. I followed this course of action Changed my hard disk partitions to dynamic just for getting 5th partition. (1st mistake) Decreased partitions to 4 again. Backed up operating system from 4th to 3rd partition with Norton Ghost. Booted from a live CD for Windows XP. Formatted 4th partition and moved my all important data from 1st and 2nd partitions to the 4th partition. Deleted 1st and 2nd partitions and got 1 partition from half of empty space. So I have just 3 partitions and empty space between 1st and 2nd partitions. Tried to install Windows 8 to the first partition but it did not allow because it is dynamic. Also it did not allow to install to other partitions. Tried to install Windows XP to the 1st partition but it said if I continue I cannot use other drivers. Therefore I escaped from installing it. Booted from the Windows XP live CD then increased 1st partiton to less than 400mb of empty space. Therefore I thought it will be adjacent but it was shown as 2 partitions. In my computer I see just 3 drivers. Using Norton Ghost I recovered my OS to the 1st partition. (2nd mistake it was on 4th partition originally) Booted from a Windows XP live CD I tried to install bcdedit to the Windows XP live CD but it did not work. Then I tried to install EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition. It was installed with errors then I start it and it showed me an error like there is no hard disk. I looked to my PC and my drivers were not there. Booted from the Norton Ghost CD and it did not show me my drivers either, but before I was able to see them. I checked numbers of partition shown by the Norton Ghost utility and they are still have same numbers so I have to see my drivers but I cannot see them now. My hard disk is shown as extarnal dynamic now so I cannot see any drive in my PC in the live Windows XP. There are two options; first one is import extarnal disk and second one is convert disk to basic. Will they delete my data? I fear booting from CDs like Windows XP live CD, Norton Ghost CD, and the operating system CD/DVD, because they may overwrite a few MB their data to my data. These recover tools are already exist in Windows XP live CD by The Ultimate Boot CD for Windows. Can any of them help me?   I have 10 workstations with large monitors that have USB slots and several card readers built in. The card readers cannot be disabled and will map to drive letters when I image the computers. I go into Disk Management and delete the drive mappings and add mappings to a single folder in C:\ with a folder for each slot. I have to do this because of scripts that run that are expecting specific letter drive mappings to network resources. Is there a way to script the deleting and adding of drive mappings instead of having to use the Disk Management GUI manually on each workstation? The workstations are running XP Professional.

  i have a cisco asa5520 in transparent mode. the interface is on the same subnet as some windows machines, which are generating a lot of broadcast traffic that is filling up the logs. is there any way to have it not log that its blocking those packets? its a bunch of these messages: "through-the-device packet to from management-only network is denied: udp src..." im also seeing some of those zeroconf requests that id like to drop logging for. i tried to just put a rule on the management interface, but apparently thats not allowed.

  So I have a list that I want to convert to a list that contains a list for each group of objects. ie ['objA.attr1', 'objC', 'objA.attr55', 'objB.attr4'] would return [['objA.attr1', 'objA.attr55'], ['objC'], ['objB.attr4']] currently this is what I use: givenList = ['a.attr1', 'b', 'a.attr55', 'c.attr4'] trgList = [] objNames = [] for val in givenList: obj = val.split('.')[0] if obj in objNames: id = objNames.index(obj) trgList[id].append(val) else: objNames.append(obj) trgList.append([val]) #print trgList It seems to run a decent speed when the original list has around 100,000 ids... but I am curious if there is a better way to do this. Order of the objects or attributes does not matter. Any ideas?

• How should I architect my Model and Data Access layer objects in my website?

  I've been tasked with designing Data layer for a website at work, and I am very interested in architecture of code for the best flexibility, maintainability and readability. I am generally acutely aware of the value in completely separating out my actual Models from the Data Access layer, so that the Models are completely naive when it comes to Data Access. And in this case it's particularly useful to do this as the Models may be built from the Database or may be built from a Soap web service. So it seems to me to make sense to have Factories in my data access layer which create Model objects. So here's what I have so far (in my made-up pseudocode): class DataAccess.ProductsFromXml extends DataAccess.ProductFactory {} class DataAccess.ProductsFromDatabase extends DataAccess.ProductFactory {} These then get used in the controller in a fashion similar to the following: var xmlProductCreator = DataAccess.ProductsFromXml(xmlDataProvider); var databaseProductCreator = DataAccess.ProductsFromXml(xmlDataProvider); // Returns array of Product model objects var XmlProducts = databaseProductCreator.Products(); // Returns array of Product model objects var DbProducts = xmlProductCreator.Products(); So my question is, is this a good structure for my Data Access layer? Is it a good idea to use a Factory for building my Model objects from the data? Do you think I've misunderstood something? And are there any general patterns I should read up on for how to write my data access objects to create my Model objects?

• Firefox add-on development: Register global dynamic custom keyboard shortcuts

  I have been tasked with developing a Firefox add-on that is capable of registering global keyboard shortcuts (ones that will work throughout all areas of Firefox) that will open up the side-bar and execute an XMLRPC request based on previously recorded input. The idea here is that there will be many potential XMLRPC requests that the user will want to execute via a keyboard shortcut. Currently, the add-on is capable of handling pre-defined static keyboard shortcuts via the Firefox overlay. What I would like to achieve, is to allow the user to register their own dynamic custom keyboard shortcut. There is an add-on that currently has some of this functionality, called Keyconfig. I'm not keen on having to ask users to install a second add-on to define their own shortcuts. It also seems that using the dynamic keyboard shortcut registration method in Keyconfig would require the user to close all Firefox windows before the dynamic shortcut is made available. What I would like to know is: Is an XPCOM component the best way to register dynamic keyboard shortcuts from within a Firefox add-on? Is there a way to register the keyboard shortcut so that it is immediately available to all Firefox windows, without having to close the windows beforehand?

  Often I hear about situations where companies are developing extensable in house software (the dreaded enterprise 'framework') which is supposed to support multiple 'plugins' from diffirent teams. Usually this ends up being a half baked solution that does not really work due to compatibility prolems between addins, or between addins and the framework itself. Usually this means QA have to 'rubber stamp' a global set of versions accross all plugins, or more usually plugins are released and stuff breaks in nasty ways. This problem has been solved before however, for example the package management systems like apt for debian linux. I suspect that the reason it works is that it is built from the start on a known 'Computer Science-y' concept. My question is what is it?

  The official documentation tells me I've to do these 3 things in order to manage the my memory for "nib objects" correctly. @property (nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet UIUserInterfaceElementClass *anOutlet; "You should then either synthesize the corresponding accessor methods, or implement them according to the declaration, and (in iPhone OS) release the corresponding variable in dealloc." - (void)viewDidUnload { self.anOutlet = nil; [super viewDidUnload]; } That makes sense for a normal view. However, how am I gonna do that for a UITableView with custom UITableViewCells loaded through a .nib-file? There the IBOutlets are in MyCustomCell.h (inherited from UITableViewCell), but that is not the place where I load the nib and apply it to the cell instances, because that happens in MyTableView.m So do I still release the IBOutlets in the dealloc of MyCustomCell.m or do I have to do something in MyTableView.m? Also MyCustomCell.m doesn't have a - (void)viewDidUnload {} where I can set my IBOutlets to nil, while my MyTableView.m does.

• When is it good to start using project management applications?

  Hello, I was wondering, when is the right time or the correct project size to start using project management applications ( like Redmine or Trac ). I have a serious project, for now it's only me developing, but I use redmine to set my project versions, issues, and estimations. I think it's a good idea, because you never know when somebody else is going to join the team, and also allows me to organize myself effectively. I ask this question because I was Teaching Assistant at my university for one year in a row for a course, and I got questions about this very very often. While I'm a believer of the KISS principle, I think that learning to use this tools early is a win-win most of the time. I really believe that we can avoid this question to become argumentative, and that there's somewhat of a consensus about this issue, which I consider quite important in todays software development world. So, when is the right time ? what is the correct project/team size ?
