• GlassFish Extension for Oracle JDeveloper

  We just release a new version of Oracle JDeveloper - 11.1.2.3. One new feature here is built-in support for GlassFish. This include the ability to create an "application server" connection to GlassFish and then deploy to that server with one click from inside JDeveloper. You can use this for deploying Oracle ADF Essentials application on Glassfish, but you can also use it to deploy any Java EE application you build in JDeveloper on GlassFish. However, if you are planning to work with GlassFish and JDeveloper on a more regular basis as your development server, then you might find my new extension useful. The new extension allows you to start and stop an external GlassFish instance, as well as start it in debug mode (which will allow JDeveloper to remotely debug your application as it runs on the server. I also added a button that will invoke the web admin console of Glassfish. Here is a quick demo that will show you how to work with the extension: The extension is available from help->check for updates, or you can download it directly from here, and then use help->check for updates pointing to the local zip file.

• Tools for code snippet execution

  By "code snippet execution", I mean the ability to write a few lines of code, run and test it without having to fire up an IDE and create a dummy project. It's incredibly useful for helping people with a small code sample without creating a project, compiling everything cleanly, sending them the code snippet and deleting the project. I'm not asking about the best code snippets or a snippet editor or where to store snippets! For C#, I use Snippet Compiler. For Java, I use Eclipse Scrapbook. For LINQ, I use LINQPad. Any suggestions for other (better?) tools? e.g. is there one for Java that doesn't involve firing up Eclipse? What about C?

• Nvidia 740M still not working after Bumblebee installation

  first of all, I have checked a lot of similar topics, but I still can't get my laptop to use Nvidia 740M. So first things first. I have a laptop Asus X550V(i5-3230, 4gb RAM, Nvidia 740M + Intel HD4000). I installed Ubuntu 13.10 alongside Win8(preinstalled) and both systems are running without problems. However, I have problem with second graphic card(Nvidia 740M), as Ubuntu doesn't recognize it. I installed bumblebee with this tutorial https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee#Installation, but I still get error "Cannot access secondary GPU" error when trying to run ''optirun Steam'' in terminal. Then I tried to do this: [ERROR]Cannot access secondary GPU - error: [XORG] (EE) No devices detected. you need to edit the /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia (or /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nouveau if using the noveau driver) and specify the correct BusID by following the instructions therein. But with lspci / VGA i get only info about Intel 4000, but no Nvidia. When I type only lspci, I get the line for Nvidia 740M,but after I edit the config file I still get second card error. Also, in /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia there wasn't BusID or anything similar, so I just added the whole line in device section. As I sad, I tried a lot of things to get it working, avoiding this forum(as I din't want to bother people with some solutions possible), but alas!, I had to bother you. If there is a need for some additional info, just say, no problem at all. Thank you very much in advance. :)

• Include everything, Separate with "using"

  I'm developing a C++ library. It got me thinking of the ways Java and C# handle including different components of the libraries. For example, Java uses "import" to allow use of classes from other packages, while C# simply uses "using" to import entire modules. My questions is, would it be a good idea to #include everything in the library in one massive include and then just use the using directive to import specific classes and modules? Or would this just be down right crazy? EDIT: Good responses so far, here are a few mitigating factors which I feel add to this idea: 1) Internal #includes are kept as normal (short and to the point) 2) The file which includes everything is optionally supplied with the library to those who wish to use it3) You could optionally make the big include file part of the pre-compiled header

• deleted gen folder, eclipse isn't generating it now :(

  I accidentally deleted my gen folder and now, predictably, my resources are all messed up. I just created a gen folder myself and tried to project clean - that didn't work. Tried right-clicking project and going to android tools fix project properties - didn't work. Tried unchecking build automatically...didn't work. cleaned, closed project, closed eclipse, restarted, etc, etc. Nothing is working and I keep seeing this error: gen already exists but is not a source folder. Convert to a source folder or rename it. EDIT - OK was able to generate R.java, but now I'm getting crazy stuff in the console: [2011-06-14 17:06:11 - fastapp] Conversion to Dalvik format failed with error 1 [2011-06-14 17:06:42 - fastapp] Dx trouble processing "java/awt/font/NumericShaper.class": Ill-advised or mistaken usage of a core class (java.* or javax.*) when not building a core library. If you are sure you're not intentionally defining a core class, then this is the most likely explanation of what's going on. However, you might actually be trying to define a class in a core namespace, the source of which you may have taken, for example, from a non-Android virtual machine project. This will most assuredly not work. At a minimum, it jeopardizes the compatibility of your app with future versions of the platform. It is also often of questionable legality. If you really intend to build a core library -- which is only appropriate as part of creating a full virtual machine distribution, as opposed to compiling an application -- then use the "--core-library" option to suppress this error message. If you go ahead and use "--core-library" but are in fact building an application, then be forewarned that your application will still fail to build or run, at some point. Please be prepared for angry customers who find, for example, that your application ceases to function once they upgrade their operating system. You will be to blame for this problem. • Connecting PC via Bluetooth SNP

  Hi, I have a widcomm example BluChat "WIDCOMM SDK RFComm Service" running on my PC with an USB dongle (BT-2400P). I would like to connect this chat from my HTC Desire. So I stared with the Java example http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/BluetoothChat/index.html. This is also using BT RFComm. If I'm using my HTC as a server it work's fine, but I would like to use my PC as a server. Then .connect() comes back with "Service Discovery Failure". I have modified the UUID string in the Java example to match the PC-application mmSocket = mmDevice.createRfcommSocketToServiceRecord(UUID.fromString("5fc2a42e-144e-4bb5-b43f-4e61711d1c32")); mmSocket.connect(); What is missing? Any help appreciated. Nicholas

• Calculated property with JPA / Hibernate

  My Java bean has a childCount property. This property is not mapped to a database column. Instead, it should be calculated by the database with a COUNT() function operating on the join of my Java bean and its children. It would be even better if this property could be calculated on demand / "lazily", but this is not mandatory. In the worst case scenario, I can set this bean's property with HQL or the Criteria API, but I would prefer not to. The Hibernate @Formula annotation may help, but I could barely find any documentation. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• Switching to a VPS

  Well, I know absolutely nothing about the subject, so I really need help. I currently have a website running on google app-engine (Java) and I can't get it to what I want because of app engine's limitations (no full text search mainly). The traffic is low, never reached 15% of the free quota (around 1500 daily pageviews). I also have 3 sites in drupal hosted in a shared hosting service, and this is giving me problems, because the server speed is awful. The sites are VERY low trafic, but load times are bad, and I might need to add more sites for some clients, so this will only get worse. So, i'm planning to move all that to VPS. The question is, can I have 2 http servers running in the same VPS? because I will need Apache-php-drupal server and a java server (tomcat?). I have really no idea on this, so any tip will be very helpful to me. Thanks!

• Should I be so enthusiastic about Groovy?

  I'm currently working on my project which consists of front and back-end written in PHP and desktop app written in Java, and that's what the plan was before I discovered Groovy and later on Grails. Now after rewriting my desktop client and sketching some back-end functionality in Groovy I'm considering to drop PHP altogether in favor of Groovy (although I haven't played around with Grails yet.) For me it just looks like coding in Groovy is as simple as in PHP, but with lots of extra sugar and awesomeness of Java libraries. Comparing those two may sound awkward, but hey I'm an amateur ;) Finally to my question, from the looks of it most of the articles/blog posts about Groovy I can find is awfully outdated. Am I missing some reason why it's not so popular and which will crush my enthusiasm to bits? :D

• Is Eclipse Remote System Explorer broken on Windows?

  I have the following setup on Windows 7 Ultimate x64: Eclipse Indigo 2.7.2 (Build: M20120208-0800) Remote System Explorer 3.3.2 (see screenshot) (Oracle/Sun) Java 1.6 Update 31 (x86) Despite all my best efforts I am unable to connect to a remote system (a Centos 5.6 server on my local LAN) using a Remote System Explorer SSH connection - I've tried both password authentication and using my SSH private key. Here is a screenshot of both the Eclipse error dialogue and what is logged in my /var/log/secure log file: /var/log/secure: Apr 1 12:00:21 nagios sshd[6176]: Received disconnect from 172.16.3.88: 3: com.jcraft.jsch.JSchException: Auth fail When I connect for the first time I do get prompted to verify the authenticity of the remote host and the RSA key fingerprint. But that's as far as things go. Performing the same operation with the same credentials on my Fedora Core 16 box (also running the same version of Eclipse and Java) to the same server is successful. This leads me to believe that RSE SSH support on Windows is either broken or there's some piece of the SSH-on-Windows puzzle I'm missing. Is this the case?

• Trouble getting Flash socket policy file to work.

  Basically I'm using Flash to connect to a Java server. Despite my Java application replying to the , in the Flash debug log it lists (not sure about the order as there are lots): * Security Sandbox Violation * Connection to 192.168.1.86:4049 halted - not permitted from http://127.0.0.1:8888/Current/wander.swf Warning: Timeout on xmlsocket://192.168.1.86:4049 (at 3 seconds) while waiting for socket policy file. This should not cause any problems, but see http://www.adobe.com/go/strict_policy_files for an explanation. Error: Request for resource at xmlsocket://192.168.1.86:4049 by requestor from http://127.0.0.1:8888/Current/wander.swf is denied due to lack of policy file permissions. What I don't understand is, the server (port 4049) receives the request, outputs the policy file and then closes the connection, surely it shouldn't time out? The policy file I'm using is: <?xml version="1.0"?> <cross-domain-policy><allow-access-from domain="*" to-ports="*" /> </cross-domain-policy>

I'm a complete novice with programming and I'm trying to get started with this Ruby on Rails tutorial (http://ruby.railstutorial.org/ruby-on-rails-tutorial-book?version=3.2) I have been trying figure this out for about 7 hours now and since I don't have any hair left to pull out I'm turning to these hallowed pages. I have searched for solutions here again and again. System: Mac OS X 10.7.5 Leopard, Xcode 4.5.2 I installed homebrew and have updated it multiple times I used homebrew to install rvm and have updated it multiple times I installed git The standard ruby on the system (checking with $ ruby -v) is 1.8.7 My problem is that every time I try to use rvm to install a new version of Ruby ($ rvm install 1.9.3) I get the following error: Ruby (and needed base gems) for your selection will be installed shortly. This is not bad (I mean, except for actually writing the app). Now I'm contemplating perhaps developing the app for Android tablets (TBA). In Java, what options are available for MIDI message communication? I'm quite familiar with javax.sound.midi, but then I would need a virtual MIDI port to send messages to the host. On the other hand, if the app were done in Adobe AIR, what options would I have available for communicating with MIDI? Obviously another option is to send/receive messages over a TCP/IP socket to a Java host, and talk that way, but it sounds a tad cumbersome... or perhaps not? DSMI does use a host program, after all.

• Which .NET class does represent the main CONTROLLER class for WebForms ?

  Hey guys, lately I was studying a bit of Java, when I was taught about a way to implement a controller class, whose resposibility is to redirect the request to an Action, which perfoms a specified work. For example, each .aspx page inherits from a Page object which is a handler for that specified page. What I couldn't figure out is, which class does get request first and translate it to the specified action (page handler)? Is it a WebForms feature(implementation) or its a IIS resposibility? So, which class represent the main controller for WebForms? Thank you very much.

• JAAS tutorial - how to force application to run with policy

  I just went through this tutorial: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/security/tour2/index.html And was curios about the basic concept of JAAS... If every applcation needs to be run with the '-Djava.security.manager -Djava.security.policy=...' flags, what is enforcing security? Is it up to the end user to know when any Java application is being run, and modify the executable/script/whatever to include those flags? Or, how does a developer enforce that an application is run with the security manager enabled? The whole concept doesnt seem very functional to me - as it is by default not enabled... Am I missing something?

• How does polymorphism work in Python?

  I'm new to Python... and coming from a mostly Java background, if that accounts for anything. I'm trying to understand polymorphism in Python. Maybe the problem is that I'm expecting the concepts I already know to project into Python. But I put together the following test code: class animal(object): "empty animal class" class dog(animal): "empty dog class" myDog = dog() print myDog.__class__ is animal print myDog.__class__ is dog From the polymorphism I'm used to (e.g. java's instanceof), I would expect both of these statements to print true, as an instance of dog is an animal and also is a dog. But my output is: False True What am I missing?

• Why is there a seemingly identical copy of the JDK 1.5 core runtime in org.osgi.foundation-1.0.0.jar?

  I am maintaining a web application that depends on OSGi and Maven pulls-in a jar called org.osgi-foundation-1.0.0.jar that seems to contain the same classes as part of the JDK core runtime such as: java.util.*; java.io.*; etc. and so on. This seems very strange and I have to ask why this is necessary. More-over, my web-application fails to deploy on JBoss 6 because these are "illegal package names" for a third-party library. What is the purpose of org.osgi-foundation-1.0.0.jar ? is it necessary?
