• Facet Version Must be 5.0 - Using Javassist in Websphere

  I have a Websphere 6.1 EAR that I am trying to deploy and I am currently getting the following message when I add javassist-3.4.GA.jar to the EAR. Facet version for Enterprise Application project IntegrationEARProject must be 5.0 to contain Java EE 5.0 project lib //{path to file}/hibernate/R3_3_1/jars/javassist-3.4.GA.jar. Currently the Project Facets are set as folows: EAR version is 1.4 Websphere version is 6.1 Please note that we do not have any of the feature packs installed currently and I do not have the option to install the feature packs. Is there anything that can be done to get around this issue? I am coding using java 1.5. Thank you very much.

• How to update the session values on partial post back and how to make Javascript use the new values

  The problem I am facing is the I am passing values to javascript to draw a graph using session values in the code behind. How can I change the code to make sure the JS uses the latest session value.

• How do I do automatic data serialization of data objects in Haskell

  One of the huge benefits in languages that have some sort of reflection/introspecition is that objects can be automatically constructed from a variety of sources. For example in Java I can use the same objects for persisting to a db (with Hibernate) serializing to XML (with JAXB) or serializing to JSON (json-lib). You can do the same in Ruby and Python also usually following some simple rules for properties or annotations for Java. Thus I don't need lots "Domain Transfer Objects". I can concentrate on the domain I am working in. It seems in very strict FP like Haskell and Ocaml this is not possible. Particularly Haskell. The only thing I have seen is doing some sort of preprocessing or meta-programming (ocaml). Is it just accepted that you have to do all the transformations from the bottom upwards? In other words you have to do lot of boring work to turn a data type in haskell into JSON/XML/DB Row object and back again into a data object.

  Hi all: I moved one years ago from classic OO languages such like Java to Javascript. The following code is definitely not recommended (or even not correct) in Java: if(dayNumber = getClickedDayNumber(dayInfo)) { alert("day number found"); } function getClickedDayNumber(dayInfo) { dayNumber = dayInfo.indexOf("fc-day"); if(dayNumber != -1) //substring found { //normally any calendar month consists of "40" days, so this will definitely pick up its day number. return parseInt(dayInfo.substring(dayNumber+6, dayNumber+8)); } else return false; } Basically I just found out that I can assign a variable to a value in an if condition statement, and immediately check the assigned value as if it is boolean. For a safer bet, I usually separate that into two lines of code, assign first then check the variable, but now that I found this, I am just wondering whether is it good practice or not in the eyes of experienced javascript developers?   I'm working on a JSF 2.0 project using Mojarra, PrimeFaces and Tomcat 6.x. I need to use c:forEach for some primefaces component like dynamic number of p:tab but i have problem with the c:forEach. All the other tag of JSTL work nice. I have the following error : java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/servlet/jsp/jstl/core/LoopTagStatus I use the following xmlns:c="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core", i tried to replace with xmlns:c="http://java.sun.com/jstl/core" but nothing display with the second.   Basically, I want to be able to assign objects created within filters to members in a base controller from which every controller extends. Any possible way to do that? Here's how I tried, but haven't got to make it work. What I'm trying to achieve is to have all my controllers extend a base controller. The base controller's constructor would be used to assign values to its members, those values being pulled from the session map. Example below. • Can 3D OpenGL game written in Python look good and run fast?

  I am planning to write an simple 3d(isometric view) game in Java using jMonkeyEngine - nothing to fancy, I just want to learn something about OpenGL and writing efficient algorithms (random map generating ones). When I was planning what to do, I started wondering about switching to Python. I know that Python didn't come into existence to be a tool to write 3d games, but is it possible to write good looking games with this language? I have in mind 3d graphics, nice effects and free CPU time to power to rest of game engine? I had seen good looking java games - and too be honest, I was rather shocked when I saw level of detail achieved in Runescape HD. On the other hand, pygame.org has only 2d games, with some starting 3d projects. Are there any efficient 3d game engines for python? Is pyopengl the only alternative? Good looking games in python aren't popular or possible to achieve? I would be grateful for any information / feedback.

  I am trying to implement JUnit tests for a class that performs DB queries using Hibernate. When I create the class under test, I get access to the session through the factory by doing the following: InitialContext context = new InitialContext(); sessionFactory = (SessionFactory) context.lookup(hibernateContext); This works fine when I deploy this to JBoss 5.1. I am trying to figure out how to get this to work with my JUnit test. I keep getting an exception stating that I "Need to specify class name in environment or system property, or as an applet parameter, or in an application resource file: java.naming.factory.initial". I've searched high and low but haven't been able to find any information about what specifically I need to do to get this to work. I am not using Spring or any frameworks, just plain old Java and JUnit.

• Android: Creating custom class of resources

  Hi, R class on android has it's limitations. You can't use the resources dynamically for loading audio, pictures or whatever. If you wan't for example, load a set of audio files for a choosen object you can't do something like: R.raw."string-upon-choosen-object" I'm new to android and at least I didn't find how you could do that, depending on what objects are choosen or something more dynamic than that. So, I thought about making it dynamic with a little of memory overhead. But, I'm in doubt if it's worth it or just working different with external resources. The idea is this: Modify the ant build xml to execute my own task. This task, is a java program that parses the R.java file building a set of HashMaps with it's pair (key, value). I have done this manually and It's working good. So I need some experts voice about it. This is how I will manage the whole thing: Generate a base Application class, e.g. MainApplicationResources that builds up all the require methods and attributes. Then, you can access those methods invoking getApplication() and then the desired method. • Are there any widely-agreed upon guidelines for rating your language knowledge on a scale?

  The question was imagined after a co-worker was complaining for an hour about some guy who could not answer basic Java questions on an interview after self-identifying himself as "8 out of 10" on Java. While that was an obvious fib, I personally always had major trouble defining my specific language skills on a sliding scale unless I'm given specific guidelines (remember 40 standard libraries by heart? Able to solve 10 random Project Euler problems in <30 mins each? Can write implementation of A, B and C data-structures from scratch in 30 mins? Know 30% of standard? Can answer 50% of questions on StackOverflow pertaining to the language?) So, I was wondering - is there some sort of commonly accepted methodology for translating such tangible benchmarks into "rate yourself on a language between 1-10"? "Kernighan gets an A, God gets a B, everyone else gets C and less" type jokes are not helpful :)

  In Java, the standard idiom for logging is to create a static variable for a logger object and use that in the various methods. In Scala, it looks like the idiom is to create a Logging trait with a logger member and mixin the trait in concrete classes. This means that each time an object is created it calls the logging framework to get a logger and also the object is bigger due to the additional reference. Is there an alternative that allows the ease of use of "with Logging" while still using a per-class logger instance? EDIT: My question is not about how one can write a logging framework in Scala, but rather how to use an existing one (log4j) without incurring an overhead of performance (getting a reference for each instance) or code complexity. Also, yes, I want to use log4j, simply because I'll use 3rd party libraries written in Java that are likely to use log4j.

  Fortran-Algol-Cpl-Bcpl-C-C++-Java ..... Seems like every language is built upon an ancestor language. My question : New languages extend parent ones or there is some kind of a trick? e.g. System.out.print() in Java ; is it actually printf() in C, and so on (printf is actually .. in Cpl)? If so, doesn't this make every further language be slower and need more memory? What separates a new language from a framework?

  Hello, This question has been asked multiple times I know. From what I understand, broadly speaking, if I include a GPL module in my app, I have to also release my app's source code for free. Now if the module is a java app (which I have modified) and included in my own java app, and say I use it as an applet on my website, do I need to distribute the source code to all the users visiting the website? Can I distribute the code only to people who ask for it? If I sell my applet, do I need to distribute the source code to all the users or ONLY to the users who purchase my applet? • FileInputStream for a generic file System

  I have a file that contains java serialized objects like "Vector". I have stored this file over Hadoop Distributed File System(HDFS). Now I intend to read this file (using method readObject) in one of the map task. I suppose FileInputStream in = new FileInputStream("hdfs/path/to/file"); wont' work as the file is stored over HDFS. So I thought of using org.apache.hadoop.fs.FileSystem class. But Unfortunately it does not have any method that returns FileInputStream. All it has is a method that returns FSDataInputStream but I want a inputstream that can read serialized java objects like vector from a file rather than just primitive data types that FSDataInputStream would do. Please help!

  So I'm getting really sick of E*TRADE and, being a developer, would love to find an online broker that offers an API. It would be great to be able to write my own trading tools, and maybe even modify existing ones. Based on my research so far, I've only found one option. Interactive Brokers offers a multi-language API (Java/C++/ActiveX/DDE) and has some fairly decent commission rates to boot.
