  Hello!.As you may notice :), this is my first post on geekswithblogs.com . I  have been using the .Net Framework mainly to develop ASP.NET WebApps for some years now and I am moving from using the .Net Framework 2.0 to using the latest features on the 4.x Frameworks, I am planning to document whenever is possible some of the stuff I learn using this space kindly given by the staff of the site. The feedback I get will also be very important for my progress and my plan is to learn a lot from what you guys can teach me with your comments on here.I also found myself with the necessity of putting somewhere code samples because sometimes when you post on forums the entries get locked and you can't do anything to add relevant details on them. The code will either be explained on its entirety or will be posted on a link that has an explained working sample for you guys to test and learn from.My posts will be in English, and I am an intermediate English speaker/writer so bare with me if it's not perfect sometimes, I am always learning something new though.I hope this get to be a useful resource for anyone interested. • Learning PHP OOP

  I have been coding PHP for about 2 years now and I THINK that I have a very good grasps of the fundamental parts of PHP, i.e. Functions foreach/IF statements sessions/cookies POST/GET Amongst a few others. I want to move on to learning OOP PHP now, so learning how to use classes and making it a really valuable skill. I have 1 requirement, the source must be a respected source that doesn't teach developers bad habits. I have the book: PHP and MySQL Web Development However, as useful as that is I would like an online source. I would like to know from people with experience in OOP PHP, how and where did they learn OOP PHP. Obviously by doing, but I would really appreciate some great resources which help me along the way.

• Where can I find a good Hibernate Criteria tutorial that doesn't use cats and kittens? [closed]

  I've been using Hibernate a little while (HQL) and want to try Criteria's for a few scenarios we have here. I'm trying to get a few inner joins (2 layers deep) and am struggling a little. I go to the official site and they teach by cats and kittens. I don't care about cats and kittens and find the analogy hard to follow. Orders, details, shipments, etc. Nice, boring business references is what I enjoy. I tried to Google it but all I get are early 2000's websites with so many flashing GIF's, cluttered displays, flash overs and "tummy tuck" ads I want to puke. Why can't the java world have sites like http://guides.rubyonrails.org/? And no, I'm not advocating I volunteer to create a similar site. :-) Anyway, any good site that can give a nice tutorial on Criteria based searches would be appreciated.

• Is it worth it to learn some programming before college?

  I'm in my last year of highschool and I am very interested in programming, the thing is I don't know if it could be worth it to start learning programming now, im afraid that when I get to college they might just teach all I might have learned in a few classes making a waste the time spent on learning that before college. Right now I'm on my last year of highschool and I know absolutely nothing about programming. There are other similar questions where people answer saying it is good to learn beforehand, but I doubt their situation might be like mine, maybe they had much more time to learn programming (as if they were not on their last year of highschool) before college so they could learn some serious skills, besides they say they already know at least the basics about a language, instead, I know nothing and I have no idea how much could I learn this year.   I'm a student considering the possibility of studying computer science. I've picked up programming indie games and websites as a hobby and I really enjoy it. Despite my fairly positive experience, I somehow get the feeling that computer science in the business world will be completely different than do-it-for-fun game making. Since I'm interested in the field and I'd like to study well, I want to prepare myself for the onslaught. (If that’s even possible) What are some of the most important principals I need to know if I decide to study computer science? What will I need to know about computer science that a University probably won't teach me? Is there any way I can get hands on experience before or while I'm at a University? • Complete Guide/Tutorials on LWJGL?

  Dont get me wrong, I finished these tutorials on http://lwjgl.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page. I finished The Basics section, OpenGL 3.2 and newer section, and I looked at the Example Code section. They were great tutorials, and I have looked at the external tutorials as well. I don't know where to go from here, and OpenGL is not my strong point. Some one suggested Learning Modern 3D Graphics Programming, and I didnt learn much. I looked at the port to LWJGL, but the book was on C and I couldn't really understand what the OpenGL meant. I am trying to learn 2D gaming, not 3D. Maybe later. Is there any tutorials that aren't C/C++ heavy and teach you 2D OpenGL?

• Looking for a very subtle unit testing example

  In the context of Continuous Integration, I need to teach unit testing to a 20-people audience of programmers. Everything will be all right, but I am still trying to find the perfect unit testing example. More than writing tests like a robot, I want to show that unit testing can help prevent very subtle errors. I am thinking of the following scenario to happen when doing a live TDD demo: the test cases would already be written, we would have to write methods together, most of us would naturally have forgotten to handle a specific case for a method, everyone would then be surprised, when seeing that all tests don't pass, the failing test would make us think more and realize that we forgot an important case. My question will probably finish as "too broad" or "not clear what you are asking", but we never know, one of you might have a great idea. Your answer can use Java and JUnit, though any other language will be fine since only the idea will matter.

I notice that a lot of books, even some of the better ones, covert it toward and end of the book and some books just add it as an appendix. I would teach it together with variables. This is so foundational and I think unfortunately many do not make it that far in a book. • graphical interface when using assembly language

  Im looking to use assembly language to make a great game, not just an average game but a really great game. I want to learn a framework to use in assembly. I know thats not possible without learning the framework in c first. So im thinking of learning sdl in c and then learn, teach myself, how to interpret the program and run it as assembly language code which shouldnt be that hard. Then i will have a window and some graphics routines to display the game while using assembly to code everything in. I need to spend some time learning sdl and then some more time learning how to code all those statements using assembly while calling c functions and knowing what registers returned calls use and what they leave etc. My question is , Is this a good way to go or is there something better to get a graphical window display using assembly language? I bought a usb/serial adapter based on PL2303X and not PL2303. 1- Do you know of any patches to make the PL2303X detectable and functional? 2- Assuming I got the patch, and before I apply it, I wanted to upgrade my kernel. • Computer Lab School for Orphans

  I am helping out an NGO, called Orphans Found Fund, here in Arusha Tanzania setup a computer lab to teach students about Ubuntu and open source applications. I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on all the systems. What I'm wondering about is how to tweak the systems so that the kids cannot: Delete or alter system files Alter the system settings Add or remove applications Exceed a time limit (like an Internet Cafe) Also as the administrator I would like to monitor the usage for another system to make sure that abuse of network is not taking place. • Associative array challenges, or examples?

  I understand well when and how to use an associative array, but I'm trying to teach a friend to program and I'm having some trouble with this particular concept. I need a good set of problems whose solutions are best implemented through the use of maps/hashes/associative arrays/dictionaries. I googled all over and couldn't find any. I was hoping someone might know of some, or perhaps get a community wiki sort of answer. That way I can say, here's our problem, and here's how we could effectively solve it through the use of an associative array... It's one of those cases where when I'm programming and I run into a situation that calls for a dictionary, I recognize it, but I can't seem to make up any such situations to use for a demonstration.

• How should I organise classes for a space simulator?

  I have pretty much taught myself everything I know about programming, so while I know how to teach myself (books, internet and reading API's), I'm finding that there hasn't been a whole lot in the way of good programming. I am finishing up learning the basics of XNA and I want to create a space simulator to test my knowledge. This isn't a full scale simulator, but just something that covers everything I learned. It's also going to be modular so I can build on it, after I get the basics down. One of the early features I want to implement is AI. And I want to take this into account as I'm designing my classes so I can minimize rewriting code. So my question: How should I design ship classes so that both the player and AI can use them? The only idea I have so far is: Create a ship class that contains stats, models, textures, collision data etc. The player and AI would then have the data for position, rotation, health, etc and would base their status off of the ship stats.

  I am a third year bachelor student in a software engineering program, and I brought up the idea of reading SICP to an adviser to gain a deeper and more fundamental understanding of the principles behind all this software we engineer. He suggested not to learn Scheme to complete the book (because it's not as common as modern dialects of Lisp) but to do the exercises in Clojure instead. It's an already difficult book, if I do attempt the book's exercises in the more modern Clojure, how would that work? For example, I can't find any real solutions, the syntax they teach for Scheme is different, etc.

• How do I get my HP M1132 printer to work?

  I connected my printer to the computer and Ubuntu 12.04recognized it and installed it, but when I try to print something, the printer just gives a signal as if the document had already been printed and nothing happens, and at the printing queue the job is still there as "Processing - Not Connected?" or "Stopped". The printer is working fine on Microsoft Windows and I am sure it is connected. In the status field in the printer properties, it says: Processing - /usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups failed. I'd like someone to please teach me how to get this printer (and it's scanner) working on Ubuntu.

• Assembly as a First Programming Language?

  How good of an idea do you think it would be to teach people Assembly (some variant) as a first programming language? It would take a lot more effort than learning for instance Java or Python, but one would have good understanding of the machine more or less from "programming day one" (compared to many higher level languages, at least).
