  Hi, I've been making simple game where you shoot boxes that are coming towards you. All game objects are simple rectangles. Now I have problem with collision detection; how to check where the collision comes so I can change the coordinates right? I have this kind of situation: http://imgur.com/8yjfW Imagine that all of those blocks are moving towards you (green box). If those orange boxes collide with each other, they should "avoid" themselves and not go through each other. I have class Enemy which has properties x, y and such. • How to fix Black screen?

  so I recently had my question deleted and merged into a standard how to for blank screens. I am relatively new to This type of computer work and i don't understand the steps nessary to diagnose my problem well enough to solve it so this help full how to has me feeling helpless I can use Ctrl + Alt +F1 and log in So how do I use sudo commands to fix the blank screen on my old dell? sudo lsoci -nn tells me my video card is a ATI rage 128 pro ultra tf /var/log/Xorg.0.log tells me Permission denied that is all i get Sudo apt-get install --reinstall unity tried thay also have also tried Apt-get update and upgrade Please dont close this question without providing an actual answer or if you think it is an exact duplicate provide a solution that worked for that question. I see a lot of these questions as closed and there is no real answer given I will try any solutions available and report results so that others can also solve problems not be overwhelmed by overly broad troubleshooting guides that do nothing to help solve specific issues The nomodeset change from quiet splash also yields no results on reboot I still get a blank screen this screen still has contorl alt f1 abilities but that is it contorl alt f8 causes blinking cursor and F7 gets a crazy flash with green and blue then blank screen Contorl alt f1 a log in prompt in text only when run in recovery mode with failsafe graphics its says the syestem is running in low graphics mode your screen graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these your self how do i do that? I got this /var/log/failsafeX-backup-120909200641.tar as the location of my log files but i have no idea how to axcess sounds work in blank screen also screen responds or flashes after log in is typed and password entered really any help is good I don't even know where to start I believe 12.04 is installed and functioning but i don't think I can see it at the end of the error log it says error setting mtrr (base= oxf0000000, size= 0x01000000, type=1) inappropriate ioctl for device(25) i have tried to provide as much info as I understand how to provide

• Web Service Standard Complexity

  Are we over-standardizing web services and hindering their adoption? No, and in fact I feel that it is helping its adoption in the modern corporate world. Standards, although they can be daunting and tedious, provide a universal framework to which we all can operate in and around. These frameworks provide a common interface for all of to use when interaction with various computing environments so that data can be transfer freely.  Standards are protocols in which computers communicate with one another. If we take this to the living world, the united nations hires interprets for all each countries dignitaries so that they can understand what other countries are talking about. Imagine if the president of the United States wanted to talk to the ruler of China. How would these to communicate? The interpreter would translate data back and forth acting as in intermediary using both standard American English and Chinese. Without knowing the standards in either language no one would be able to communicate. Even though we work within the framework of standards does not mean that we are stuck with these standards. As technology evolves all standards will be out of touch, and when this occurs standards need to be refactored or replaced with new standards that are current with the technology at that time. How else are we as developers and the technology going to grow? What do you guys think?

• Integrating Amazon EC2 in Java via NetBeans IDE

  Next, having looked at Amazon Associates services and Amazon S3, let's take a look at Amazon EC2, the elastic compute cloud which provides remote computing services. I started by launching an instance of Ubuntu Server 14.04 on Amazon EC2, which looks a bit like this in the on-line AWS Management Console, though I whitened out most of the details: Now that I have at least one running instance available on Amazon EC2, it makes sense to use the services that are integrated into NetBeans IDE:  I created a new application with one class, named "AmazonEC2Demo". Then I dragged the "describeInstances" service that you see above, with the mouse, into the class. Then the IDE automatically created all the other files you see below, i.e., 4 Java classes and one properties file: In the properties file, register the access ID and secret keys. These are read by the other generated Java classes. Signing and authentication are done automatically by the code that is generated, i.e., there's nothing generic you need to do and you can immediately begin working on your domain-specific code. Finally, you're now able to rewrite the code in "AmazonEC2Demo" to connect to Amazon EC2 and obtain information about your running instance: public class AmazonEC2Demo { public static void main(String[] args) { String instanceId1 = "i-something"; RestResponse result; try { result = AmazonEC2Service.describeInstances(instanceId1); System.out.println(result.getDataAsString()); } catch (IOException ex) { Logger.getLogger(AmazonEC2Demo.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); } } } From the above, you'll receive a chunk of XML with data about the running instance, it's name, status, dates, etc. In other words, you're now ready to integrate Amazon EC2 features directly into the applications you're writing, without very much work to get started. • CUDA 4.1 Particle Update

  I'm using CUDA 4.1 to parse in the update of my Particle system that I've made with DirectX 10. So far, my update method for the particle systems is 1 line of code within a for loop that makes each particle fall down the y axis to simulate a waterfall: m_particleList[i].positionY = m_particleList[i].positionY - (m_particleList[i].velocity * frameTime * 0.001f); In my .cu class I've created a struct which I copied from my particle class and is as follows: struct ParticleType { float positionX, positionY, positionZ; float red, green, blue; float velocity; bool active; }; Then I have an UpdateParticle method in the .cu as well. This encompass the 3 main parameters my particles need to update themselves based off the initial line of code. : __global__ void UpdateParticle(float* position, float* velocity, float frameTime) { } This is my first CUDA program and I'm at a loss to what to do next. I've tried to simply put the particleList line in the UpdateParticle method, but then the particles don't fall down as they should. I believe it is because I am not calling something that I need to in the class where the particle fall code use to be. Could someone please tell me what it is I am missing to get it working as it should? If I am doing this completely wrong in general, the please inform me as well.

  Well ? from comments here and elsewhere, the two most worst things seemed to be the the removal of 32-bit support and removal of support for certain components. Just to set things into perspective: Solaris 10 was released 2005, the newsest class of machines not supported by it were the Ultra1. This one was released 1995. The UltraSPARC-Systems not able to run on Solaris 11 were released 2001. Well ? we have 2011 now ?. Regarding 32-bit support: Well ? I don't think "playing around with Solaris on old gear" is the problem. At first, most people are playing around with virtual machines. But there is something different: 64-bit computing was introduced for x86 in 2003 (yes ? it's really that old). I think this move is more hurting to the people using boards with the first-gen Intel Atom "Silverthorne" as small file servers. And then Solaris 10 won't disappear with Solaris 11

• Dealing with under performing co-worker

  I'm going to try to keep this topic as generic as I can so the question isn't closed as too specific or whatever. Anyway, let's get to it. I currently work on a somewhat small project with 15-20 developers. We recently hired a few new people because we had the hours and it synched up well with the schedule. It was refreshing to see hiring done this way and not just throwing hours & employees at a problem. Alas, I could argue the hiring process still isn't perfect but that's another story for another day. Anyway, one of these developers is really under performing. The developer is green and has a lot of bad habits. Comes in later than I do and leaving earlier than I am. This in and of itself isn't an issue, but the lack of quality work makes it become a bit frustrating. When giving out tasking the question is no longer, what can realistically be given but now becomes - How much of the work will we have to redo? So as the project goes on, I'm afraid this might cause issues with the schedule. The schedule could have been defined as a bit aggressive; however, given that this person is under performing it now in my mind goes from aggressive to potentially chaotic. Yes, one person shouldn't make or break a schedule and that in and of itself is an issue too but please let's ignore that for right now. What's the best way to deal with this? I'm not the boss, I'm not the project lead but I've been around for a while now and am not sure how to proceed. Complaining to management comes across as childish and doing nothing seems wrong. I'll ask the community for insight/advice/suggestions.

• I don't understand how TDD helps me get a good design if I need a design to start testing it

  I'm trying to wrap my head around TDD, specifically the development part. I've looked at some books, but the ones I found mainly tackle the testing part - the History of NUnit, why testing is good, Red/Green/Refactor and how to create a String Calculator. Good stuff, but that's "just" Unit Testing, not TDD. Specifically, I don't understand how TDD helps me get a good design if I need a Design to start testing it. To illustrate, imagine these 3 requirements: A catalog needs to have a list of products The catalog should remember which products a user viewed Users should be able to search for a product At this points, many books pull a magic rabbit out of a hat and just dive into "Testing the ProductService", but they don't explain how they came to the conclusion that there is a ProductService in the first place. That is the "Development" part in TDD that I'm trying to understand. There needs to be an existing design, but stuff outside of entity-services (that is: There is a Product, so there should be a ProductService) is nowhere to be found (e.g., the second requirement requires me to have some concept of a User, but where would I put the functionality to remind? And is Search a feature of the ProductService or a separate SearchService? How would I know which I should choose?) According to SOLID, I would need a UserService, but if I design a system without TDD, I might end up with a whole bunch of Single-Method Services. Isn't TDD intended to make me discover my design in the first place? I'm a .net developer, but Java resources would also work. I feel that there doesn't seem to be a real sample application or book that deals with a real line of business application. Can someone provide a clear example that illustrates the process of creating a design using TDD?

• Mobile web app, styling in percentages; I can't get height to work [migrated]

  I am building a mobile app for a band and obviously want it to display well in all the plethora of handsets out there today. I built it at first for my own device and it looks and works great, so now I am reworking it in percentages so that it works in all devices. I have a slider (jquerytools) going on and if i set width to 100% then it is perfectly wide in my iphone and my ipad... success, however I am not having any luck with height. It seems to only accept a height in px. • Reverse-Engineer Driver for Backlit Keyboard

  Here's my situation: I recently purchased a Sager NP9170 (same as the Clevo P170EM) and it has a multi-colored, backlit keyboard. Under Windows 7, you can launch an app that allows you to change the color of the backlighting to any of a handful of colors (blue, green, red, etc). I want that same functionality under Linux. I haven't been able to find any software that does this, so I guess I'm going to have to write it myself. I'm a programmer by trade, but I've haven't done much low level programming, and I've certainly never written a device driver, so I was wondering if anyone could answer these two questions: 1) Is there any software already out there that does this sort of thing? I've looked fairly thoroughly but haven't found anything applicable. 2) Where would I start in trying to reverse engineer this sort of thing? Any useful articles, tutorials, books that might help? And just to clarify: The backlighting already works, that's not the problem. I just want to be able to change the color of the backlighting. This functionality is supported by the hardware. The laptop came with windows software that does this and I want the same functionality in Linux. I am willing to write this software myself, I just want to know the best way to go about it. Thanks!

• Ubuntu 11.04 64bits Keeps Randomly Freezing

  This has been a real headache for me since the number of freezes has increase from twice a week to about 1 or twice a day. The system just halts and nothing can be done but hitting the restart button. At the beginning I thought it was related to Flash since I was getting random freezes when playing full screen flash videos online. I also thought it could be the wireless pci card. But the system has freezed using browsing around GNOME. The truth is, the freezes are really random and strange. I checked this thread Ubuntu keeps randomly freezing and try to ssh my computer using another one, but I could not ssh since it was really totally frozen. NumLock or CapsLock wasn't responding or blinking. Since I could not ssh I, also ignored this article https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze According to my wife, the system has also halted under Win7 Pro 64bit but with less frequency. Here is my system configuration Intel Core i7 2600k ASRock Z68 Extreme3 gen3 Motherboard Crucial M4 128GB CT128M4SSD2 SSD WD Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB SATA II G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR2 OCZ ModXStream 600W Power Supply Rosewill RNX-N300X PCI Wireless Adapter No external Graphics Card I remove the Wireless card and used Ethernet to see if the problem was the that, but I got a freeze after doing that. I also ran memtest86 and everything was ok. The only other thing I might suspect of is the SSD. I will try to clone the SSD to a HDD to see if that solve the problem. At this point I am stuck with the freezes. Do anyone have a clue of why this is happening and how can i solve this?

• Accidentally Changed Dual Monitor Setup and don't know how to reset it

  I have a dual monitor setup with my laptop and an external Asus monitor running under Ubuntu 11.10. When I first started using Ubuntu, it synced both screens. What showed up on my laptop showed up on my eternal monitor. Last night, I accidentally knocked the HDMI cable from its port (not that unusual in the tight space I work in). When I plugged it back in, as usual, the external monitor only displayed my wallpaper. Usually, I just restart Ubuntu and it resets, but last night what I now realize was the display console came up and somehow I changed the setup. Now the two screens show different jobs so to speak. Also, the external monitor doesn't display the ribbon, making switching between Firefox tabs and windows or apps jarring. I write for a living and need to quickly check bits of research, notes or sources while writing and the extra switching between mouse pad and external mouse to get one or the other screen to respond interrupts my work flow. The only technical help I can offer is when the display console popped up, the graphical representation of the screens was that the external screen appeared layered over by about one-quarter of the laptop screen. Again, these were icons. I tried to replicate that after I obviously screwed things up. If someone could help. I would appreciate it. If I have to use terminal, that's fine. I started using computers for writing back when they were green DOS prompts. There's a certain elegance to prompt commands to me. Maybe it's the writer in me. Again, if anyone can help me return my screens to sync under Ubuntu 11.10, I would greatly appreciate it.

• How to use lists in equivalence partitioning?

  I have read that equivalence partitioning can be used typically for intervals or lists, e.g. I assume it can be used for every set of inputs. Anyway if the requirement says that allowed colors are (RED,BLUE,BLACK, GREEN), I cannot treat them like a list, right? I mean, testing one of them would not be enough because developers most likely used some switch-case and thus it is not real "set" where one could represent also the others. So how it is meant with lists? Also what is not that clear to me, I do not think it is always possible to do the initial partioning and then design the test cases. What about checking two lines intersection: Y=MX+C. (two inputs) 1) The lines are paraller. M1=M1 but C1 must be different from C2. 2) Lines are intersecting. M1 must be different from M2. 3) Coincident. The are the same. How can I use partitioning here? THis is actually taken from a book and it says that these sets are eq.classes.

• Are my negative internship experiences representative of the real world? [closed]

  I'm curious if my current experiences as an intern are representative of actual industry. As background, I'm through the better part of two computing majors and a math major at a major university; I've aced every class and adored all of them, so I'd like to think that I'm not terrible at programming. I got an internship with one of the major software companies, and half way through now I've been shocked at the extraordinarily low quality of code. Comments don't exist, it's all spaghetti code, and everything that could be wrong is even worse. I've done a ton of tutoring/TAing, so I'm very used to reading bad code, but the major industry products I've been seeing trump all of that. I work 10-12 hours a day and never feel like I'm getting anywhere, because it's endless hours of trying to figure out an undocumented API or determine the behavior of some other part of the (completely undocumented) product. Did I draw a short straw on internships (the absurdly large paychecks imply that it's not a low quality position), or is this what the real world is like?

• Multiple passes in direct3d10

  I begin to learning direct3d10 and stuck with multiple passes. What am I doing wrong? Also, I've got another question - should I set vertex shader in every pass? • What kind of redirect (301 or 302) for an email links tracker?

  We are developing an email sending application ("à la" Mailchimp). Hyperlinks inserted by our users, in the emails they want to send, are replaced by a tracking URL on our application (https://ourdomain.com/trackingurl?blablabla) which then redirects the email reader to the original URL our users included in their emails. This allows us to record statistics about link clicks. Until now, we used 301 for those redirections, but we noticed that Google began indexing pages on our application which are in fact redirects to other domains. (The title and snippet in Google results are from the other domain, but the link in green is from our application). We took action by adding those urls to our robots.txt, but Google seems to take forever (months!) before removing them for its index and removing them by hand in Webmaster Tools would take a lot of time since there are lot. I would like to know which kind of HTTP redirect (301 or 302) is best suited for this kind of opreation ? Do you think switching to 302 redirects could improve this situation since we don't really want Google to index redirected links from our clients emails ?

  Here are the notes for this week’s release: Pull Requests We’ve added the ability to see the snippets of code where a user commented inline in the discussion of pull requests. You can also add another line comment directly from the discussion area, rather than navigating to the code diff viewer.   Ok, so I am trying to create a 2D non-movable random tiled map. • Are my negative internship experiences respresentative of the real world?

  I'm curious if my current experiences as an intern are representative of actual industry. As background, I'm through the better part of two computing majors and a math major at a major university; I've aced every class and adored all of them, so I'd like to think that I'm not terrible at programming. I got an internship with one of the major software companies, and half way through now I've been shocked at the extraordinarily low quality of code. Comments don't exist, it's all spaghetti code, and everything that could be wrong is even worse. I've done a ton of tutoring/TAing, so I'm very used to reading bad code, but the major industry products I've been seeing trump all of that. • Web Host which provides Latex and embedded programming [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? 5 answers Hopefully this is a reasonable place to ask this question. I'll confess I'm a little green when it comes to web programming and websites in general (though not programming). I'm a Math and Physics person. I want to make a personal webpage containing a Math and Physics blog. Ideally the blog should support latex, and embedded programs. This would allow me to write, say, an equation for an orbit and then show what the orbit would look like (perhaps letting the reader configure parameters). The programming language can be javascript (though it isn't my favorite language). My budget is around 5 dollars a month. Does anybody have suggestions for a good Shared host with these kind of requirements? And a small aside, It would be useful if I can move the website content, since I might live at a university in the nearish future. They would have servers which could support such a webpage.
