• Building (simple) stellar systems

  hi I'm currently looking at how to simulate easily some stellar systems (meaning some central stars and then some planets with maybe satellites), in order to allow later some space based strategy game (hence with space ships moving around). This should all be based around time (so the state of each system differs through time) I'm quite struggling with the math behind this topic, like for example: - ellipse related math, - creating the path from planet A to B having time in mind (respective positions will change over time)... Do you know of any resources for that ? I wouldn't mind even buying books about it... thanks in advance best space borg side note: how to display all this stuff isn't a matter at this point in time, I'll simple plans for that (basically sticking to 2D and a "high level view" with no space ships/planets details, just markers)

• Remembering user credentials in standalone Application

  I'm developing a standalone application using java, I have a Login screen, wherein user enters his username and password. For each instance of the application, user have to enter his credentials. From a usability standpoint, I thought of keeping a remember me check Button. My question is, as I am not using any database, how do I persist the user details. I have some rough thoughts, storing them in a property file and retrieving. I think there may be better approaches than the one I had. Any Ideas and suggestions?

  Great keynote and I don’t like keynotes.. Seeing the great breadth of large and small devices and the number of manufacturers along with the software vision for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 was inspiring. Jordan Rudess demonstrates Tachyon on Windows 8 Then he played for a while too..   I especially liked Steve Balmers 82” slate!! • Options for secure git -repo hosting?

  I need a secure git -repo host, either by third-party or by myself. I am not sure how so outlining some ideas. Please, answer how you manage git -repos securely -- do you use some service or do you use only your 'legs' -approach? Afaik Bitbucket.org and Github.com are missing Gmail -style second-verification. Now I need this kind of login-system with password and mobile-phone to access the administration things in the git -hosting or ability to disable this kind of access without private -key.   Following a recent discussion with female associates in hiring positions for software development/engineering positions, I found out that this kind of information would be incredibly useful to helping make sure that the workforce shows a gender balance. So I went looking. I've found various literature speaking about risk-taking behaviour and patterns, and other statistical differences between men and women when it comes to work performance. See for example this article related to hedge fund management. I have yet to see any such comparison in the computing field. To restate the question: Which specific programming activities do women, on average, perform better than men? Please back up your answers with specific details, preferably by linking to relevant research or, failing that, explaining what you're basing the information on.

• projective geometry: how do I turn a projection of a rectangle in 3D into a 2D view

  So the problem is that I have a 3D projection of a rectangle that I want to turn into 2D. That is I have a photo of a sheet of paper laying on a table which I want to transform into a 2D view of that sheet. So what I need is to get an undistorted 2D image by reverting all the 3D/projection transformations and getting a plain view of the sheet from the top. I happened to find some directions on the subject but they don't suggest an immediate instruction on how this can be achieved. It would be really helpful to get a step-by-step instruction of what needs to be done. Or, alternatively, a link on a resource that breaks it down to little details. Thank you

  Are there any tools available for the following use case: I am planning to write a complex application and now I just know about the basic functional requirments. I am refining the functionality with more and more details. I am also writing down how to implement this in software architecture perspective. I am in a situation where there are multiple ways implement a certain functionality and based on the selected approach, other parts of the program will also change. • SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

  Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released. • low level api or graphics library?

  Well, I want to learn game development, I've already know a little bit about xna, ogre and DX but, I want to choose one of them and stick with it. I'm not trying to make a "directx vs xna, ogre vs opengl, etc." thread. Some people told me that it's better to learn an engine like Ogre because you can develop games directly and you don't have to worry about the low level details, I know that. Other people told me that it's better to learn a low level api before learning something like Ogre because you will able to understand how it works. Is it valuable to have experience with Ogre or another engine but don't know anything about a low level api? What do you recommend me? Thanks in advance.

• How do you repair an "input/output error" in an NTFS partition?

  I replaced a buggy Windows Vista installation with Ubuntu. All works fine except that the mais harddrive where I had all my files are now inaccessible. Here is the eror message I get: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details Is it necessarily a hardware problem? If not, is there a way to repair the HD from Ubuntu?
