• How do I secure a folder used to let users upload files?

  I have a folder in my web server used for the users to upload photos using an ASP page. Is it safe enough to give IUSR write permissions to the folder? Must I secure something else? I am afraid of hackers bypassing the ASP page and uploading content directly to the folder. I'm using ASP classic and IIS6 on Windows 2003 Server. The upload is through HTTP, not FTP.   My DLLs are loaded by a third-party application, which we can not customize. My assemblies have to be located in their own folder. I can not put them into GAC (my application has a requirement to be deployed using XCOPY). When the root DLL tries to load resource or type from another DLL (in the same folder), the loading fails (FileNotFound). Is it possible to add the folder where my DLLs are located to the assembly search path programmatically (from the root DLL)? I am not allowed to change the configuration files of the application.

  I have a number of interdependent projects in an Eclipse workspace. Eclipse manages dependencies between them within the IDE but I'm starting work on a master build script that will sit in the folder about all the projects (the workspace folder). I haven't decided on if I will use Maven, Gradle or Ant/Ivy tet, but my question is, is there a way so that I can see a build script in the workspace folder in the Project/Package explorer? Currently it only shows me projects, but assuming I decide on an Ant build, I want to be able to see the main build.xml file in this window. I've played around with settings to no avail. Is it possible? If not, should I just set up an external run configuration instead?

  Hi, I am creating code to upload images in a folder using PHP, & before upload an image I check that if any image with same name already exists in the folder by using below syntax: if (file_exists('profilephoto/' . 'frame.gif')) { } But actually I don't want to restrict the user to upload more images with same name & obviously it is impossible to save two images with same name , but there is a way to just find total number of images with same name & upload the next image with appending total number + 1 with image name. • Can VBScript determine the most recently modified (or added) file in a particular folder?

  Hello, I have a script (or more accurately WILL have a script) that checks a folder and copies a file from this folder to a different location (will run once per day). The fileName that I'd like to copy from, however, changes based on the date. Basically, instead of setting the "strFilePath" to "C:\somePath\somePath2\myFile.txt" I would like to simply take the most recently modified (or added - does this make a difference in terms of the script??) in the "somePath2" folder and copy it to the destination. Bonus (but not completely necessary) would be to check in the script if the file was modified/added in the last 24 hours and only copy it over in that case. Thanks for your help!

• How can I get all the .pdb files in the same folder?

  I have a solution in Visual Studio 2008, it has dozens of projects. I would like to have all the pdb in the same folder. From the property page of a project I see that the pdb will go to the "Intermediate Directory"; also .obj files go to the "Intermediate Directory". Each of our projects has its own folder because we want to keep the .obj separated, at the same time I would like to have all the pdb in the same folder. Looking at the buildlog.htm I see the option /PDB which controls the pdb path, this option doesn't seem to me available in the property page. Maybe I will have to use a post buil script?

I need the following question answered: How to remove cabability to create file or folder creation in NTFS that contains invalid characters? Can you remove the POSIX subsystem from Windows to fix this issue? How does disabling 8.3 dos name creation factor into this issue? Will any of these fixes prevent linux clients from creating windows compliant files?

• internet access options in remote area? (read: no comcast,qwest, etc)

  Currently I am living in a fairly "remote" area, in the countryside, and cable internet access through the typical companies like comcast and qwest is just not available here. I've been trying to research other options for fast internet access. There are some small cable companies but they currently do not offer broadband access here. I thought about maybe buying a 3g phone with a data plan and doing some sort of tethering, or perhaps getting an android phone and using it as a wireless AP. This would of course depend on 3g being available here. The only other thing I can think of is some sort of satellite internet service, or doing something crazy like adapting wifi over am radio. Anyone have any ideas, at all, short of moving somewhere else?

  The Basic 64-bit Amazon Linux AMI has the following instance type options available: Micro Large Extra-Large High-Memory Extra Large ... etc I booted up this AMI as a micro type, made customizations, shut it down, detached the volume, took a snapshot, and registered my own custom AMI: ec2-register –snapshot [snapshot_id] –description "my description" –name "my name" –kernel aki-427d952b That worked. HOWEVER, when I try to create an instance from my custom AMI, only the following instance types are available: Micro Small High-CPU Medium ... which coincidentally are the same instance types available if you try to boot up the 32-bit Amazon image. Why are the available instance types of my custom image varying from the available instance types of the image I based it off of?

  I'm running a setup with PHP 5.3.8 and use php-fpm with it's chroot functionality to separate multiple customers. So each customer has it's own chrooted PHP-environment, which is quite fine. I now want to disallow that a customer can change the *memory_limit* of his PHP-instance by using *ini_set*. On the other hand I don't want to disable *ini_set* completely. So I'm searching for a possibility to disable the possibility to set specific PHP configuration options (like *memory_limit*) via *ini_set*. Does somebody know how to achieve that?

• Why does this monitor go to sleep but won't wake up, event though all related power options are turned off?

  We have a machine, Windows 7 (64-bit) with ASUS motherboard, in our building that only sometimes seems to go to sleep, but won't wake up. The machine is still running but shaking the mouse or hitting keys on the keyboard won't wake it up. I have tried for days to isolate the problem, but every time we get to a "let's try this" scenario, it happens again, later. All power options related to display being off are set to never, except the simple, "turn display off after..." setting. That is, the hard drive is set to never turn off, and the computer is set to never sleep nor hibernate. All drivers seem to be up to date, but I am afraid I will hose the machine if I do a BIOS update (plus I figured that will probably have nothing to do with the issue and only make something else break). Wasn't sure if there was something obvious I was missing?

  Short background: I'm using Debian Sid. Currently the audacity package is conflicting with the pidgin package, because gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad are outdated. I'm trying to rebuild it, but one of the unit tests is failing as one plugin I don't need is causing a segfault. I need to disable these tests, and there's a configure option for that, but I don't know how to pass it. So, how can I run configure with custom options? Either by passing them to debuild, or by editing some file in the debian directory? I only worked with Gentoo ebuilds so far, which are extremely simple compared to the Debian control files, which I still find completely undecipherable.

  I've got an unresponsive Rackspace slice that has defied all attempts at accessing. I created an emergency image from this and deleted it, downloading the files that compromise the image to a local source. There are a number of files / assets I would still like to recover from this server if possible but not sure exactly what I can do with the image files, if anything. • Almost 2013 - Any decent options for mp3 to text? (Speech Recognition)

  I know there's some questions here on s/u regarding converting spoken word mp3 to text, however, most are pretty old (2010 and earlier). I'm just wondering if there's any new legitimate options for this task - if google has shown us anything, speech recognition has come a long way. Personally, I'd prefer a linux based solution, but I'm not picky. I've heard a lot about something called Sphinx, but I tried to set it up and get it going but I couldn't. I know there's a number of different componenents for Sphinx so maybe I was doing it wrong? Either way, are there any new applications for Speech recognition, especially from MP3 files? Thanks!

• What options can I use in totem, xine or vlc to play on machines with limited resources?

  Mplayer has some options that allow me to play it on a machine with limited resources. I can use mplayer -vo x11 -zoom -framedrop to play videos when otherwise I'd run out of memory. At least I think I'm running out of memory. I am running our of some resource for sure. -vo sets the video output driver -zoom actually I don't know what this does, but it works for me ;-) -framedrop allows mplayer to not render frames if it falls behind. Are there similar command line controls (or a defaults file) for totem, vlc or xine?

  I need to connect to a headless X Windows server (running on Ubuntu) from my MS Windows 7 computer over a 100 Mbit network. I could use VNC (or any other remote viewer) but the 3D graphics performance would be lousy I imagine. I used to have it hooked up to a monitor, but that's broken now and I can't afford a new one. A friend advised that I could try and use an X client, and that the 3D graphics wont suffer too much over 100 Mbit. Cygwin seems to be an option, but I was wondering if there were any more lightweight options.

This file will be included, before the VirtualHost statement is issued, but it can't be embedded inside it. Can I (and if yes, how) target configuration settings to foo.example.com requests only, outside the VirtualHost container?

• How to set file associations and explorer options in one go?

  This has been itching me for quite a long time. When I come on a new computer with any version of Windows, I need to: un-hide file extensions set explorer default view to list instead of icons set the file extensions like h c cpp so they don't open Visual C++ (which can take up to 20 seconds!) each time I double click on them, opening them with something like Notepad++ instead. Isn't there some program to quickly set thoses options to something I want, like some standalone exe, or some generic registry file I can execute when I come on a new machine? I'm a developer and I can't believe I'm wasting so much time on those &*$%@# things.

• Options to efficiently synchronize 1 million files with remote servers?

  At a company I work for we have such a thing called "playlists" which are small files ~100-300 bytes each. There's about a million of them. About 100,000 of them get changed every hour. These playlists need to be uploaded to 10 other remote servers on different continents every hour and it needs to happen quick in under 2 mins ideally. It's very important that files that are deleted on the master are also deleted on all the replicas. We currently use Linux for our infrastructure. I was thinking about trying rsync with the -W option to copy whole files without comparing contents. I haven't tried it yet but maybe people who have more experience with rsync could tell me if it's a viable option? What other options are worth considering?

  I recently got my laptop stolen with some sensitive informations on it (personal source code, bank details in a secure file, passwords, etc) and I learnt the lesson: encrypt your sensitive data. Now, I am wondering what are the options to encrypt a partition (not an encrypt disk image) ? Aim: The aim is to prevent anyone (except me) to access those data. Requirement 0: The software must be able to encrypt non system partition. Requirement 1: Plausible deniability is required but preventing cold boot attack is however not an absolute requirement (I am not famous enough or have sensitive enough info to have this kind of requirement). Requirement 2 : Software taking advantage of AES hardware encryption are very welcome as I intent to get a Macbook Pro with i7 CPU (with AES-NI enabled instructions). I will have avirtual machine running in the encrypted partition. Requirement 3 : Free or reasonably cheap. Requirement 4 : Software must run on Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Lion. • What are my options for booting OSX 10.6 when my DVD drive is broken?

  I'm about to completely re-pave my Mac Mini but the DVD drive has died on me which means I can't boot from the installation media. I know I can boot from a USB stick but I don't have one available, what are my options given the following hardware at hand? Netgear ReadyNAS Duo NAS (NIC or USB only, no Firewire) USB HDD (no Firewire) I've ripped an ISO of the installation disk, can I somehow get the Mini to boot from this image using one of the above? If I decide not to re-pave but just upgrade, can the Mac be upgraded just using an OSX 10.6 ISO image on its disk?
