  • Beside SVN, how do you manage your development vs test vs production source code?

    - by medopal
    I'm working on a very large project with three phases of source code. Development source code: changes rapidly every second, and checked by our QA Test environment code: released to clients' QA department (released every 2-3 weeks) Production environment: after confirmed ok by client QA its released to prod. (every few months) The system (governmental web app) is very large to track changes,bugs and hot fixes, sometimes the Testers could ask for a change, some other times the Production could ask for a hot fix or small update. The problem is, when the Test or Production request changes, the development code is already changed a lot, and they always warn us they want only that small fix, do not upload anything new with it. The question, how should i manage the code for the 3 phases, and get back to Test or Production code any tie and fix that small one thing (reflecting the change to the current Development as well)? Note: making a branch each time is too much, and i don't want the developers to be lost between updating the mainstream, the branch and the Test code!

  • Blittable Vs. Non-Blittable in IL

    - by Michael Covelli
    I'm trying to make sure that my Managed to Unmanaged calls are optimized. Is there a quick way to see by looking at the IL if any non-blittable types have accidentally gotten into my pinvoke calls? I tried just writing two unmanaged functions in a .dll, one that uses bool (which is non-blittable) and one that uses ints. But I didn't see anything different when looking at the IL to let me know that it was doing something extra to marshal the bool.

  • client-side vs server-side

    - by amalafrida
    In general, should one design in order to place processing load on client-side? More specifically, a search engine to locate subscriber information requires a fair amount of parsing (multiple phone numbers to sort and format, hour of day, timezone, comparisons for possible substitutions of user information, etc.). Again, in general, is it preferred that one have client-side do the work? It seems to me 'yes' in a situation in which one will have many thousands of hits per minute. Use php for quick database queries ... process retrieved data client-side. yes ... no?

  • YUI vs jQuery, for css style layouts

    - by tony
    Hi Complete novice question. I've used jQuery a bit, YUI not at all and know very little about it. I work on a website thats IE specific, we're now looking at making it cross browser. jQuery seems great at hiding the differences between browsers from a javascript point of view. However in terms of css layout is it YUI that I should really be looking at? thanks

  • Closure vs Anonymous function (difference?)

    - by Maxim Gershkovich
    Hi, I have been unable to find a definition that clearly explains the differences between a closure and an anonymous function. Most references I have seen clearly specify that they are distinct "things" yet I can't seem to get my head around why. Could someone please simplify it for me? What are the specific differences between these two language features? Which one is more appropriate in what scenarios?

  • php vs python django or something else for CMS module

    - by Michael
    We're looking to develop a CMS module for our website and I need some help in choosing the language/framework for this project. Basically we need to develop a "help' module like this one from ebay http://pages.ebay.com/help/index.html which will contain a lot of static pages with nice URLs for SEO. The application must run fast using low computer resources. We have been looking to use php on a custom made mvc framework but we received advice from other sources that py/django is the exactly language/framework that we need in terms of maintainability and development speed because it was developed for exactly this kind of projects so I need an expert advice on this matter with pro and cons for each choice.

  • Within headers, images with alt text vs. text

    - by Court
    Do search engines treat the alt text of an image placed within an h1 tag the same way they would treat regular text placed in an h1 tag? I gave a search through here looking for an answer to this question, but was only able to find information on image replacement and the infamous h1 debate. For example would: <h1><img src="#" alt="Contact Us" /></h1> Act the same as: <h1>Contact Us</h1> In the electronic eye of a search engine? This seems considerably less "CSS Hacky" than other image replacement techniques like negative text indents, display:none, height:0, or ridiculous z-index integers.

  • Python "string_escape" vs "unicode_escape"

    - by Mike Boers
    According to the docs, the builtin string encoding string_escape: Produce[s] a string that is suitable as string literal in Python source code ...while the unicode_escape: Produce[s] a string that is suitable as Unicode literal in Python source code So, they should have roughly the same behaviour. BUT, they appear to treat single quotes differently: >>> print """before '" \0 after""".encode('string-escape') before \'" \x00 after >>> print """before '" \0 after""".encode('unicode-escape') before '" \x00 after The string_escape escapes the single quote while the Unicode one does not. Is it safe to assume that I can simply: >>> escaped = my_string.encode('unicode-escape').replace("'", "\\'") ...and get the expected behaviour?

  • Speed of Synchronization vs Normal

    - by Swaranga Sarma
    I have a class which is written for a single thread with no methods being synchronized. class MyClass implements MyInterface{ //interface implementation methods, not synchronized } But we also needed a synchronized version of the class. So we made a wrapper class that implements the same interface but has a constructor that takes an instance of MyClass. Any call to the methods of the synchronized class are delegated to the instance of MyClass. Here is my synchronized class.. class SynchronizedMyClass implements MyInterface{ //the constructor public SynchronizedMyClass(MyInterface i/*this is actually an instance of MyClass*/) //interface implementation methods; all synchronized; all delegated to the MyInterface instance } After all this I ran numerous amounts of test runs with both the classes. The tests involve reading log files and counting URLs in each line. The problem is that the synchronized version of the class is consistently taking less time for the parsing. I am using only one thread for the teste, so there is no chance of deadlocks, race around condition etc etc. Each log file contains more than 5 million lines which means calling the methods more than 5 million times. Can anyone explain why synchronized versiuon of the class migt be taking less time than the normal one?

  • VSS causing crash in VS 2008

    - by David
    We use Visual Studio 2008, with visual source safe v8. Lately, I seem to be getting a lot more crashes than usual, mainly when viewing history (comparing, etc.). I have taken a screencapture of the series of dialog boxes that will always appear, leading up to the crash: http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/1360/msvscrash.jpg Does anyone know what could be causing this? Thanks.

  • Strange ATI vs Nvidia TRIANGLE_STRIP issue

    - by chriscisco
    I have this code, I am using a test for my Engine I am working on. On My NVIDIA NVS 4200M it displays the GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP as expected. On my ATI Radeon 5800 it appears to draw a Triangle. shader.begin(); Matrix4<float> temp = getActiveCamera()->getProjectionMatrix() * getActiveCamera()->getObjectToWorld().fastInverse(); glUniformMatrix4fv(shader["mvp"], 1, GL_TRUE, temp.getArray()); glBegin(GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP); glVertexAttrib3f(shader["colour"],0,1,0); glVertexAttrib3f(shader["coord3d"],-.5,-.5,0); glVertexAttrib3f(shader["colour"],1,1,0); glVertexAttrib3f(shader["coord3d"],0.5,-.5,0); glVertexAttrib3f(shader["colour"],1,0,1); glVertexAttrib3f(shader["coord3d"],-.5,.5,0); glVertexAttrib3f(shader["colour"],0,1,1); glVertexAttrib3f(shader["coord3d"],.5,.5,0); glEnd(); shader.end(); Here are what it actually looks like on my two computers. https://www.dropbox.com/s/sgm2j978tx2ipnp/not%20working.png https://www.dropbox.com/s/27idv0b8k0p4pcx/working.png

  • Threading in java vs C#

    - by ffayyaz
    I need a little confirmation over something i am confused at . I know how threads work in java. new DialList(string a , string b).start(); // where DialList is a class public class DialList extends Thread { public DialList(String a, string b) { FilePath = a; ThreadLogFile = b"; } public void run() { // some code to run in different thread } } Now i want to run same code in C# , Shall i put the code which is in run() into a method and do something like Thread t = new Thread (runcsharp); // Kick off a new thread t.Start(); static void runcsharp() { // code } or is there some other way to do it ?

  • Portrait vs Landscape Launch Images

    - by andrewx
    An iPad app can support inclusion of launch images in both orientations; presumably, if your app supports auto-rotation, then this would suggest to me that if the user launches an app while the device is in Landscape mode, then the Landscape launch image is used. But in all the apps I've built and released, this has never been the case. Never once has the Landscape launch image appeared, only the Portrait. After loading, the app will auto-rotate to whatever orientation the device is in, but at launch, it assumes you are in Portrait. Always. Why? I have seen many other apps in the store that behave this way, but then there are some seem to always automatically know immediately at first launch, from that first launch image, that you are in Landscape, if that's the case. How is this done?

  • How to Best Setup a Website Project in VS.NET

    - by Jason
    I have very little experience with setting up a website from scratch in a .NET environment. As I am doing this now, I am wondering - what's the best way to go? Is it better to create a new Website Project, and include the various backend services and database code as part of that project, or is it better to split out the various aspects of the project? If the second, how would I go about doing that? I want to ensure that this project is easy to manage in the future (in terms of source control, deployment, etc), so I want to make sure I'm starting off on the right foot. I was unable to find any tutorials online, but if you have any, I would appreciate those as well. Thanks!

  • VS JavaScript intellisense with paramaters

    - by TonyB
    here is some sample javascript: SomeObjectType = function() { } SomeObjectType.prototype = { field1: null, field2: null } SomeOtherObject = function() { } SomeOtherObject.prototype = { doSomething: function(val) { /// <param name="val" type="SomeObjectType"></param> var val2 = new SomeObjectType(); //val2. shows intellisense correctly //val1. does NOT } } Shouldn't visual studio be giving me intellisence when i do "val." inside the "doSomething" function? I would expect it to give me field1 and field2 as options, but it doesn't. I DO get field1 and field2 if I type "val2." so intellisence works when I create a new object of the same type that I specify in the param comment. Any ideas what I am doing wrong or is this just not supported?

  • jQuery .html() vs .text() produce different result in .hover() function

    - by Paddy
    I have a issue where in I am using the .hover() function. If I use .text() fuction to add the html (anchor tag) which I am dynamically creating, it works fine, both the functions are called as desired. But when I use the .html() function instead then the second fuction of .hover() is never been called. var i = 0; textItems = new Array(); ////I am putting the value into textItems using the jquery ajax call ////and i get its value from a .each() function. //.text() implementation $('#textArea-id').hover( function() { $('#textArea-id').text(textItems[i]); }, function() { //-->mouseout function is called here } ); //.html() implementation $('#textArea-id').hover( function() { $('#textArea-id').html(textItems[i]); }, function() { //-->mouseout function is never been called } );

  • $_POST vs. $_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD'] == 'POST'

    - by Scott
    Some guy called one of my Snipplr submissions "crap" because I used if ($_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD'] == 'POST') instead of if ($_POST) Checking the request method seems more correct to me because that's what I really want to do. Is there some operational difference between the two or is this just a code clarity issue?

  • More RAM vs. more servers [closed]

    - by user357972
    I was recently asked "Do you know when to decide between going for more RAM or more servers?" (in the context of scaling data mining applications). I had no idea, so what are some ways to decide? I have very little knowledge of architecture and scaling (my understanding of computer memory and what a server does is limited to the high-level basics), so tips on learning more about these things in general are also very welcome.

  • How to make a Single Executable VS 2010

    - by Uri
    I'm making a game using C++ and DirectX and it'd be nice to share my groups progress with other people by providing a single executable file instead of having to run a setup wizard. I've checked my Release and Debug folders but those executable don't work. The release .exe is something like 21KB which doesn't seem right. So I guess what I'm asking is how to make a single executable with all of the libraries and resource files included.
