• XFCE session with GNOME in background

  Hi askUbuntu I recently installed XFCE on my Ubuntu 10.04 and it runs finely but with an issue. Everytime I login into my XFCE session I see the background image of GNOME session and after few seconds it disappears which gives me the impression that XFCE session is running over an already running GNOME session. If that is really the case then it might also be eating into my system's RAM which could be a bug. All helps and suggestions are welcome.

• How can I audit users and access attempts to SSH on my server?

• Stop using flash? Or improve the flash experience?

  I'd like to setup my Ubuntu to work without Flash (= not installed), but still be able to view videos on sites like Youtube, wisevid, etc. I want to try this because recently Flash has crashed a couple times. It also often 'feels' sluggish. Also a couple other flash related questions here got me thinking there might be a better way of doing things. So how should i do this? Note: Answers that have flash + work-arounds are also welcome.

• Should CSS be listed on your resume under Languages?

  I have some doubts like Whether CSS should be put under Languages or not? Although Wikipedia says Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language ... But do they write CSS under the languages section of the resume, along with PHP, etc? Similarly what about HTML? I have some doubt and I don't want to sound like someone who is not aware of the trends. Just to give an example, currently I have the following languages,frameworks, technologies, etc. listed under the "Technical Expertise" section of my resume - Technical Expertise * Languages - Proficient - PHP 5, Javascript, HTML ?*,CSS ?*,Sass ?*. Beginner - Linux Bash. * Databases - MySQL 5. * Technologies - AJAX. * Frameworks/Libraries - Symfony, jQuery. * CMSes - Wordpress. Although my domain is Web-development/design, I welcome domain-agnostic answers which can provide some generic ideas/reasoning. I have seen, a lot of people messing up these sections (even more serious than my doubts :) ), putting things under wrong sub-headings and thus putting a big question mark on their understanding of those things. I don't know much about XML, Comet Technology etc. Considering those are included too, What things should be put under Languages? E.g. Should CSS be put under Languages? Please give some reasoning to support your views. Where should the others (XML, Comet, cURL etc. ) be put? I welcome some examples of how you put it. Or do you have an additional Keywords section where you write all the unsortables ? Considering a set of standards like W3C standards, etc. do you have a standards sub-heading? I guess I have put the contents of other sections Okay. But do let me know about your ideas and reasoning. After all, I understand there may not be a single answer to this, but let's see what is the trend. Thanks Updates Further, do you mention design patters you have used? Web Services etc.?   How can I write a tool to monitor domain name availability? In particular, I am interested in monitoring availability of a domain which is in PENDINGDELETE (or REDEMPTIONPERIOD or REGISTRY-DELETE-NOTIFY or PENDINGRESTORE or similar ) status after its expiration date. Any suggestions or more information about the PENDINGDELETE and similar status are also welcome (what is the time frame till which it can remain in this status, etc. I usually don't see a fixed pattern or even consistent correlation with expiration date and this status).

• Windows vista shows ISO file as ZIP!

  When I download the ISO file my system shows the file as a zip file and not an ISO. I have tried to burn the file as an image to a DVD but my laptop will not bootup from the CD. Settting in the BIOS are ok so I guess the problem is with the ISO file or the way i burned the CD. I have follwed the instructions on the site for downloading and burning an ISO image to CD so I guess that my problem is with the file association in windows Vista. Any ideas and suggestrions welcome Thanks

• totem doesn't enables you to skip forward or backward in a mp3

  Can anyone help me figure this out? So if i open mp3 files in Totem: and Banshee 2.4 So for my main music player I use Banshee 2.4, which works pretty well, despite a few occasional hiccups (any suggestions as to something better are totally welcome) but when I'm downloading new mp3s to my desktop and I want to check them out I normally just click on them and have them open in Totem. ubuntu 11.04 x64

• Mac OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion Breaks Parental Controls

  If you have kids and macs and you use Parental Controls, for the moment don't upgrade to 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, the feature is broken after upgrading. I had to disable parental control completely on my daughters' macs in the meantime... After hundreds of parents have complained about problems in this discussion thread on Apple's forums, finally the tech press notices:  First There Was Apple's MapGate, Now Welcome ParentGate For the moment there doesn't seem to be a workaround. Ugh.

• Attaching a Command to the WP7 Application Bar.

  One of the biggest problems that I’ve seen with people creating WP7 applications is how do you bind the application bar to a Relay Command. If your using MVVM then this is particular important. Let’s examine the code that one might add to start with.  <phone:PhoneApplicationPage.ApplicationBar> <shell:ApplicationBar IsVisible="True" IsMenuEnabled="True"> <shell:ApplicationBarIconButton x:Name="appbar_button1" IconUri="/icons/appbar.questionmark.rest.png" Text="About"> <i:Interaction.Triggers> <i:EventTrigger EventName="Click"> <GalaSoft_MvvmLight_Command:EventToCommand Command="{Binding DisplayAbout, Mode=OneWay}" /> </i:EventTrigger> </i:Interaction.Triggers> </shell:ApplicationBarIconButton> <shell:ApplicationBar.MenuItems> <shell:ApplicationBarMenuItem x:Name="menuItem1" Text="MenuItem 1"></shell:ApplicationBarMenuItem> <shell:ApplicationBarMenuItem x:Name="menuItem2" Text="MenuItem 2"></shell:ApplicationBarMenuItem> </shell:ApplicationBar.MenuItems> </shell:ApplicationBar> </phone:PhoneApplicationPage.ApplicationBar> Everything looks right. But we quickly notice that we have a squiggly line under our Interaction.Triggers. The problem is that the object is not a FrameworkObject. This same code would have worked perfect if this were a normal button. OK. Point has been proved. Let’s make the ApplicationBar support Commands. So, go ahead and create a new project using MVVM Light. If you want to check out the source and work along side this tutorial then click here.  7 Easy Steps to have binding on the Application Bar using MVVM Light (I might add that you don’t have to use MVVM Light to get this functionality, I just prefer it.) 1) Download MVVM Light if you don’t already have it and install the project templates. It is available at http://mvvmlight.codeplex.com/. 2) Click File-New Project and navigate to Silverlight for Windows Phone. Make sure you use the MVVM Light (WP7) Template. 3) Now that we have our project setup and ready to go let’s download a wrapper created by Nicolas Humann here, it is called Phone7.Fx. After you download it then extract it somewhere that you can find it. This wrapper will make our application bar/menu item bindable. 4) Right click References inside your WP7 project and add the .dll file to your project. 5) In your MainPage.xaml you will need to add the proper namespace to it.   I am currently undecided between which of the following web algorithms book to buy: 1) Algorithms of the Intelligent web by Marmanis 2) Collective Intelligence by Alag Both feature code in Java; Marmanis' book delves deeper into the core algorithms while Alag's book discusses more APIs including WEKA. I have already read Programming Collective Intelligence by Segaran and enjoyed it. Any comments on these books or any other recommendations are welcome.

• Dump debugging with Parallel Stacks

  One of the areas where we fixed many bugs for Beta2 in our parallel debugging windows is with regards to managed dump debugging. So it was really cool to see Tess use the Parallel Stacks window in that scenario in her video demo with Scott.Other than the neat ability to open managed dumps in VS2010, Parallel Stacks was the only debugging feature she needed for diagnosing the issue!
