• Trouble with resolving hostnames on CentOS using Bind

  I'm taking a course on server administration at school and I have managed to set up virtual hosting in apache and a dns server on a virtual machine. However, I have now set up an old pc to run CentOS and I'm trying the same on that box. The problem I ran into now is that I can't resolve hostnames from the linux box. I have set up the nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf to the IP of the CentOS machine, but when I try for example ping google.com I get ping: unknown host google.com However, when I do ping 66.102.13.105 (which is the Google IP, figured that out by pinging on my mac) I get: PING 66.102.13.105 (66.102.13.105) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 66.102.13.105: icmp_seq=1 ttl=52 time=15.5 ms Slightly confused why this is happening. Could it be because of my router sitting in between the linux machine and the cable modem? It's a D-Link somethingsomething. Thanks in advance

• How to detect device type from device connected to router?

  I have a att router and there is an unknown device connected to my network. I can't seem to kick it off because of how att's router settings are created which is kind of dumb. I am able to see its local ip and mac address. I am on a mac with snow leopard. How can I get more information on the device with the information that I have? I want to see what kind of device it is, I have checked all devices that are connected to the router and none seem to match the local ip that is connected. I have WPA encryption setup with a strong password.

• How can one tell that FLAC or WAVPACK audio file is NOT originally encoded from a Lossy source?

  Hi everyone, Forgive me for my ignorance,firstly. Problem: Say I have a lossy mp3 audio file(5.17Mb ie. 87% compressed from its original souce-unknown), I then encode it to another LOSSLESS format, say FLAC or WAVPACK. The size increases(23.14Mb ie. 39% compressed from its original souce-mp3)! ID tags, etc remain the same and there's no way of checking the integrity of its origin. Question: Is there a way of checking that the so-called FLAC or WAVPACK audio file was originally encoded from a LOSSLESS source(wav,cda,ape,...etc) instead of a LOSSY source(mp3,aac,ATRAC,..etc) Thank you. • Linux script to find time difference and send an email if need

  Hi, I'm not an expert in writing shell scripts but also I'm looking for a very specific solution. OS: CentOS release 5.2 (Final) I've a Java standalone which keeps writing (all System.out.println) to a log file. For some unknown reason, this Java standalone stops working at some point of time in my server and eventually logs writing also stops working. I want to have a script which checks the last modified date & time of the log file with current date & time in the server. If the time difference exceeds more than 5 minutes, I want to send an email immediately to my recipients list. This way I'll come to know when this Java standalone has stopped working. I'll move this script to crontab and make it run for every 1 minute, so that this whole process is automated. Log file location: /usr/local/logs/standalone.log

• Juniper router dropping pings to external interface

  My organization has a Juniper SSG20-WLAN that routes our traffic to the outside world. We've been having intermittent problems with our internet connection so I wrote up a Python script to ping the internal interface of the router, the external interface, a couple of our internal servers, the ISP router our router talks to, their upstream provider, and Google and Yahoo for good measure. It does that about every minute. What I have found is that when our internet goes out, our Juniper router ceases responding to pings on the external interface. Everything past that is, of course, unreachable. The internal interface and our internal servers continue to echo back without interruption. None of the counters indicate dropped packets of any type. They all look normal. The logs complain about VIP servers being unavailable but otherwise nothing indicative of network issues. My questions are these: Does this exonerate our ISP? Or, contrawise, might a problem with the connection be causing the external interface to go down? Is there somewhere else in the SSG20, beside the system log and counters, that might help me track down info on the problem? UPDATE: Turned out that one of the switches between my monitoring box and the router was a router itself, and occasionally diverting from the gateway to itself. Kudos to those who made suggestions along those lines. Not really sure which answer to mark as accepted, as it was really stuff in the comments that turned out to be right. Thanks for the suggestions.

• modprobe ndiswrapper - not found

  I'm trying to use ndiswrapper on a Slackware 12 (I think) box, but I'm running into a problem with modprobe. Everything I find online says that it should be working, but for some unknown reason it isn't. Here's what I've done so far: Installed ndiswrapper (latest tarball, make, make install) Ran ndiswrapper -i on the WinXP driver for my USB wireless card Ran ndiswrapper -l which tells me the driver is present and the device is present (lsusb also confirms the device is present) Ran ndiswrapper -m which put an alias for wlan0 in /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper.conf Ran depmod -a Ran modprobe ndiswrapper which tells me "FATAL: module ndiswrapper not found" Ran modprobe -l which shows no listing for ndiswrapper I even tossed in a reboot or two while trying various combinations of the above, still nothing. So naturally ifconfig wlan0 up isn't working because the device isn't being created, presumably because the module isn't loading the driver. Does anybody have any suggestions? Everything points to the notion that this should work fine, but modprobe just isn't able to find what it needs. Have I missed an important step?

• 3000 videos songs... some are loud in voice & some low.. I want to make them equal (equal in volume only)

  I have thousands Video flv/avi files, which are all songs only. Some of them are high in volume and some are low. Every time the song ends I have to up or down the volume at once..to escape my ears ruined by headphones... and by woofers, save my life from my neighbor sleeping after hard-earning all the day long. :-( Any idea to make all files sound equal? Does such kind of application/software exist? Any converter that may convert all audio files into same volume? I know iTunes has sound-check option but can it convert? If I want to write CDs, does any burner have the feature like this, to burn in equal sound? If yes, suggest something for me... For, I am really really worried... It would be a great help..... • Mercurial says hgrc is untrusted in Emacs, but works fine from the command line

  I've got some Mercurial checkouts in a directory that was mounted by root. Mercurial is usually suspicious of files that aren't mine, but I'm the only user here, so I put: [trusted] users = root groups = root in my ~/.hgrc, and now I can use hg from the command line with no warnings or errors about anything being untrusted. So far, great. But when I try to run, say, vc-annotate in Emacs, I get an Annotate buffer that says: abort: unknown revision 'Not trusting file /home/me/.../working-copy/.hg/hgrc from untrusted user root, group root Not trusting file /home/me/.../working-copy/.hg/hgrc from untrusted user root, group root 7648'! The message area says: Running hg annotate -d -n --follow -r... my-file.c...FAILED (status 255) I don't have anything in my .emacs related to vc or hg. Other commands, like vc-diff, work fine. What am I missing here?

  I am using the latest version of the Komodo IDE, PEAR and PHPUnit with PHP version 5.3.0. When I run the unit tests for my Komodo project the tests run correctly, but regardless of whether there are any tests to run or not I get shown the error: --------------------------- PHP Error --------------------------- parse error in Unknown on line 7 --------------------------- OK --------------------------- Everything works fine despite this error but it is irritating to see every time I run my tests. Furthermore, running the unit tests from the command line does not trigger any kind of error, suggesting that this is a problem with Komodo. How can I fix the error or, at the very least, stop it from showing up.

• Can remote LogMeIn Hamachi users access our local LAN?

  Unknown to me, one of the kids has installed LogMeIn Hamachi on his PC so that he can access and play on his pal's Minecraft server, and vice versa. One of the things I did was disable the Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks on the Hamachi NIC in Windows 7's Network Connections. However, my lack of fu when it comes to these types of services is leaving me feeling a little uncomfortable about him using this. Is there anything I should be worried about here? For example, can his friends access our local LAN (which has a number of NAS boxes with unsecured shares) and get up to no good?

  I've run into a really weird issue. I was debugging a server 500 error script on our EC2 instance and found that we didn't have ioncube loaders installed. So I went to go install them and I created a new file at /etc/php.d/zend.ini and initially I inserted the value of extension=/usr/local/ioncube/ioncube_loader_lin_5.3.so and restarted httpd at which point it told me: The ionCube Loader is a Zend-Engine extension and not a module Please specify the Loader using 'zend_extension' in php.ini PHP Fatal error: Unable to start ionCube Loader module in Unknown on line 0 So I changed the contents of zend.ini to zend_extension=/usr/...etc. Now when I attempt to restart httpd I get this error: Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs I can't even run /etc/init.d/httpd stop without it erroring. I've since removed zend.ini to see if that's what caused it and it doesn't seem to be. Any ideas?

• Postfix additional transports - is it working?

  I have enabled two additional transports in my postfix config to deal with recipient domains that demand connection limiting, per the instructions here at serverfault. However, I have no idea if this is working or not; in fact, I think it is not working, due to the send speeds I am seeing in the logs. How might I determine if my additional transports are working? If they aren't, do you have any tips on figuring out why? And, do you have any comments on my particular configuration? (am I a bucket of fail?) I have enabled the additional transports in master.cf: smtp inet n - - - - smtpd careful unix - - n - 10 smtp -o smtp_connect_timeout=5 -o smtp_helo_timeout=5 cautious unix - - n - - smtp -o smtp_connect_timeout=5 -o smtp_helo_timeout=5 I have set up the transport mapping file /etc/postfix/transport: hotmail.com cautious: yahoo.com careful: gmail.com cautious: earthlink.net cautious: msn.com cautious: live.com cautious: aol.com careful: I have set up the transport mapping and some connection-limiting settings in main.cf: transport_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/transport careful_initial_destination_concurrency = 5 careful_destination_concurrency_limit = 10 cautious_destination_concurrency_limit = 50 Finally, I have run converted the transport file to a db per the postfix docs: #> postmap /etc/postfix/transport And then restarted postfix. I do see my transport_maps setting when I run postconf, but I do not see any of the transport-specific settings ('careful_xxx_yyy_zzz'). • shared hosting with malware, .htaccess file gets modified every 2 hours or so

  I spent all day today chasing malware on the shared hosting for one of my clients. • HP Media Smart remote access

  I just purchased this box for home backups for my pc's and mac's. Everything works great accept for the remote access part. I can RD into the machine locally but I can't get to it from outside of my network. I've enabled port forwarding on my router but it doesn't seem to matter. I checked with Qwest and they don't block these ports so I'm at a loss. I do have Vonage in front of my router but I've taken it out and it didn't make a difference. I suspect I've made an error with my router setup. I'm a programmer and I'm playing in the world of the unknown here. I'm lost. Any suggestions?

  I am able to send email to individual users but when not when they are in a distribution group. When I do I get this report. The message could not be delivered because the recipient's destination email system is unknown or invalid. Please check the address and try again, or contact your system administrator to verify connectivity to the email system of the recipient. #5.3.1 However, like I said before I can select their name from the GAL and send mail that way. Their email address is exactly the same in both the GAL and distribution group. The only difference is these users have external email addresses. • How to extract .raw backup of Windows to a partition?

  I have a backup of a Windows 7 drive (virtualbox install) made in .raw format and I want to extract it to my empty partition ready for Windows. Im using OSX. Any ideas? I have tried this: sudo dd if=/Volumes/DATA/bootcamp.raw of=/dev/disk0s6 Which works fine but when I reboot (im on a hackintosh so im using the Chameleon boot loader) I get the normal Chameleon boot menu but with an unknown GPT partition (thats what its called) and If I select that it says: Missing Operating system. Is the MBR broken on that partition?

• USB keyboard not working under Windows 7 x64?

  I have two USB keyboards, one no-name cheap thing and an old Logitech. When I plug them in to my computer they pop up in Device Manager as an "Unknown device" and "USB-receiver", respectively. Both of them fail to install any drivers, neither automatically or through Windows Update. Both keyboards work perfectly on another computer I have with Windows Vista 32-bit. Can this be one of those cases where a device does not work in a 64-bit version of Windows? I doubt it though since I've never had that problem before with any device and I thought that basic things like keyboards would be kind of failsafe. I don't really know how to start debugging this issue. I've tried all the obvious, rebooting, changing the USB port, etc. Are there any generic x64 keyboard drivers you can use? Is there any way to find the manufacturer of the keyboard over USB? There is nothing written on it.

• Transferring DHCP using Windows Server Migration Tool - Why is Powershell is crashing on the import of the .mig file?

  I am migrating DHCP from a windows server 2003R2 DC to a Windows Server 2008R2 DC I've followed this video and its predecessor (Installing Windows Server Migration Tools) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/video/migrating-dhcp-using-the-windows-server-2008-r2-migration-tools.aspx I went through everything smoothly until the last step. I have exported a .mig file with my DHCP configuration on the old 2003r2 server. I transferred this .mig file over to my 2008R2 server, when running the import command, it will appear to work for a minute or two and then I get a generic windows "Powershell has stopped working" error and I have to close the program. Under the problem details I see the following: FileVersionOfSystemManagementAutomation: 6.1.7600.16385 InnermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException OutermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException DeepestPowerShellFrame: unknown OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.272.7 LocaleID: 1033 Seems like there are permissions issues maybe? I am running powershell as an admin and am logged in to the server as a domain administrator. Any Ideas? Thanks

• How to determine the source for wakeup in hibernate

  I have a big problem with my home theater PC that runs Windows 7 64Bit. Normally, I send that PC to hibernate every evening, but from time to time, it keeps waking up for no obvious reason, and stays on until I realize, which is sometimes half a day later :( I have already checked for Windows update, which is not set to automatical, since I prefer installing updates manually. When I look in the system event log, there is an entry called "Power Troubleshooter" which tells me that my system was reactivated at a specific time, but it also says: Source = Unknown, which is the most annoying part. So how can I actually figure out, which process reactivates the PC? Is it possible to set a group policy which forbidds applications or services from scheduling tasks that allow waking up from hibernate at all?
