• How do you interpret `strace` on an apache process returning `restart_syscall`?

  We restart an apache server every day because RAM usage reaches its limit. Though of value See this serverfault answer, I dont think lowering the MaxClients in the apache configuration is a solution to the unknown root problem. Can you make sense out of the below data?   I get the following error trying to send an email to my Google Apps Email at [email protected] from my Postfix server. to=, relay=local, delay=0.09, delays=0.07/0/0/0.02, dsn=5.1.1, status=bounced (unknown user: "admin") Is there a way I can force it to not use the LOCAL relay and treat [email protected] as outside email and not look for a user in the current postfix configuration. I am trying to email the full email address "[email protected]" not only "admin". I have the Google Apps MX record on mydomain.com + SPF record which before was: v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all (emailing to [email protected] used to work with that record) But I had to change it to v=spf1 a mx ip4:MY.IP.HERE include:_spf.google.com ~all

• Raid 5 scsi fault

  I have no much knowledge about servers and I was looking all day around the internet about finding a solution to my raid 5 problem. All of a sudden two disks failed. The server won't boot (HP Proliant, windows 2003 R2, very old maybe 10 years old). I know that if one disk is faulty then I can add a new disk and rebuild it and things will be fine, the problem is two went faulty :( is this normal? two at the same time? is there any other thing I can do and I am not aware of? other than taking them out and reinserting them back? Windows won't boot. The Array menu shows that disks 0 and 4 are "Missing". Any other tricks or things to do? It is important because for some unknown reason the back up job did not work for a month and I just found out, so I need to make these raid 5 back online again.

  I need to find the flavor of Windows that is running using a batch file that will run on anything from Windows NT to Windows 7. I'm using a method based on this page with some minor changes. Systeminfo gives the flavor of Windows that is running. Is there any authoritative list of names that can be returned? If so where would I find the list?   I tried to boot my pc using ubuntu 6.06 in the live cd mode but it refuses to boot. It throws the error Uncompressing Linux.. ok, booting from kernel [ 54.168828] ACPI Unable to load the System Descriptor Tables The live cd works perfectly okay in other computers. Out of curiosity, I also tried to boot using Slax live cd, It too threw some errors incomplete literal tree invalid compressed format (err=1) UDF-fs: No partition found (1) XFS: bade magic number XFS: SB validate failed Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0) The slax errors are a bit worrying to me. • Disable CTRL + ALT + [LETTER] to produce accented variations

  After an unknown config change, CTRL + ALT + [LETTER] has started producing common accented versions of [LETTER]. I'm not a big fan of this arrangement, seeing as I've memorized all my favourite ALT + [NUMPAD SEQUENCE] references and was used to using CTRL + ALT + [LETTER] for various other application-specific commands in my text editor. The prominent result from my searching suggests that this has something to do with a switch to an 'international keyboard', and says this can be removed in the control panel or toggled by hitting ALT + SHIFT, but I can't get my system to confirm this, and the solutions (or close approximations thereof) don't work. Specifically, I've been to Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language\Advanced settings and switched the override for default input method from 'language list' to English and I've been to Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language\Language options and made sure that I only have my one input method (UK). Other than that I'm not quite sure where to look. Any ideas?

• smbclient -L host works. ping host doesn't work. What is missing

  I upgrade my ubuntu desktop to 13.10. When I say upgrade I mean installed on a new partition from scratch (old partition is available if To the problem: I'm trying to ping a host (Drobo-FS server) by it's netbios name. I get "Unknown Host". However running smbclient -l HostName - give me all the output in the world. Stracing the ping I can it tries to use resolv.conf (expected fail) and then when accessing mdns stuff it fails (no mdns.allow file) and exits. Here's the host line from /etc/nsswitch.conf: hosts: files wins mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4 I've added wins right after files (and also tried before dns. Nothing helps. Reboot after every change. What am I missing?

  This used to work about a year ago. Now it doesn't: git log --abbrev=6 The expected result would be all commit hashes abbreviated to 6 characters. The actual result is now this error message: fatal: ambiguous argument '6': unknown revision or path not in the working tree. Use '--' to separate paths from revisions, like this: 'git [...] -- [...]' I have the impression that Git doesn't even know about that argument and tries to silently ignore its name but not the value. Using Git 1.8.1.msysgit.1 on Windows 7. Addition: Oh and it fails on other parameters, too. The entire command is: git log --abbrev=6 --format=format:"----- Commit %%h on %%ci by %%an -----%%n%%n%%B" If I just leave the abbrev part out, it still returns another error: fatal: Invalid object name 'format'.

• Motherboard with embedded hdmi problems with Windows 8 Consumer Preview (64bit)

  I'm specifically referring to GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400 HDMI Micro ATX with a Core 2 Duo chip. This computer is connected to a Sharp Aquous TV using HDMI. It all worked fine with Windows 7 64 bit. In Device Manager I see GeForce 9400 and have installed the latest NVidia drivers (295.73 WHQL). However, when I click on the change the screen resolution to 1920x1080, I see that Windows 8 thinks that it's using some other graphics card with Microsoft Basic Display Driver. This was made clear, when I tried to launch the NVidia tools and it claimed that the current monitor (in this case my TV) wasn't attached to the GeForce 9400 card. In Device Manager, there's a "Coprocessor" and "Unknown device" without drivers, but I've no idea what they are. I've run the original CD that the motherboard came with no success. Any ideas?

• Emails not arriving to client's inbox. Server not on black list.

  Hi, I'm sending emails to my clients who are hosted on GoDaddy for both their website and email. For some reason, my system's emails are no longer reaching their inbox. My email server sends them alerts when an action is completed. These alerts are posted in my system and my email server is sending these out, but there are no bounceback emails. There have been no issues in the past year, but in the past two weeks the problem started cropping up. My clients were forced to switched to a web-based email provider like Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo to receive their alerts. This is a temporary solution that works in the interim. I contacted GoDaddy and they are indicating that I am not being blocked. I also have a GoDaddy account and can confirm that my alerts aren't arriving in the inbox regardless of whatever safe sender items I employ in the webmail interface. I even switched all the system's outbound emails to Plain Text, no luck. Can anyone provide some insight and point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance.

• What sort of things can cause a whole system to appear to hang for 100s-1000s of milliseconds?

  I am working on a Windows game and while rendering, some computers will experience intermittent pauses ("hitches" for lack of a better term). When profiled they appear in seemingly random places in the code. Eventually I noticed that it wasn't just my process that was affected, but (seemingly) every process on the system. All of the threads in my application hitch at once. The CPU utilization drops during these hitches and it appears as if most processes make no progress. This leads me to believe this may be an Operating System or Driver issue, but it only occurs while playing the game (and only on some systems). What sort of operations might the operating system be doing that would require the kernel to pause all user threads and block. Some kind of I/O? At first I thought of paging but my impression is that would only affect a single process, no? Some systems in use: Windows, DirectX (3d), nVidia cards (unknown if replicates on ATI), using overlapped io for streaming

• Any way to tell apart a CPU defect from a mainboard defect?

  I have a fairly modern desktop computer, an AMD Athlon II X2 based silent PC, that does not work. When turned on, it will start physically (all fans are rotating, disks start up...) but not give a signal on any of the graphics ports (DVI, VGA, and HDMI, I tried all three). Also, the reset button does not seem to have any effect. I have stripped the mainboard bare of all SATA connections, extension cards, and the one 2GB RAM chip to eliminate them as the problem source, but to no avail, so I think it's fair to assume it's either the mainboard or the processor that are at fault. However, I have neither a replacement mainboard, nor a replacement processor handy to identify which one is broken. The cause of the defect is unknown, so for all I know, it could be both. Therefore, I'm reluctant to buy replacement hardware blindly before knowing more. Is there any way to further diagnose (or at least get some indication) which component is broken without buying replacement hardware?

• Is there a tool for verifying the contents of a Zip archive against the source directory's contents?

  Here's the scenario: I create a ZIP archive using some GUI package like WinZip, 7-Zip or whatever by right-clicking on a directory "somename" and selecting "Compress to archive 'somename.zip'" When the archive is completed, I open it and discover that some files don't exist in the archive (for reasons yet unknown). I want to find all files that are missing from the archive without having to extract the archive to another directory, then doing directory diff, etc. So.. Is there a tool (GUI or command-line, standalone or built into a compressor, for Windows or Linux, I don't care) that can walk through an archive and compare its contents against a directory on the filesystem?

  I have a server running Windows Server 2012 and it only has the Hyper-V role. I have a VM also running Windows Server 2012 and it has the Active Directory: Directory Services and DNS ([example.com]) roles. It has been promoted to a domain controller for [example.com]. In the virtualization host I have joined the domain successfully. On a laptop on the network, it can ping my DNS that is inside the VM on the virtualization host. However, it can't resolve anything through the DNS. I figured it was a firewall issue where the DNS had the firewall allow rule, but the virtualization host did not. I added that, but it didn't fix the issue. On my laptop, I get "UnKnown can't find [example.com]: No response from server" immediately. There's no time out, it just comes back right away. What have I overlooked?

The Android SDK and the drivers that come with it don't seem to work with the device, but the device itself reports as Android 2.2.1. Other users have reported that the drivers of the Nook Color worked for them, but I cannot confirm this, after trying. What options do I have to connect to the device (and ultimately to root it)? Is it truly just the .inf file that I need to manipulate in order to make the device ID known to Windows? After all there are tools to figure out those strings while the device is connected (although "unknown") ...

• Windows XP Map drive failed

  Greetings, I have a Windows Web Server 2008 VPS and two client machines. One is a Windows 7 box and the other XP. I configured one folder as a share on the 2008 box and attempted to mount it on each of the clients. The catch is it won't work with XP. Same username/password but I get Access granted on the Win 7 but for XP I get: Failure Reason: Unknown user name or bad password. Status: 0xc000006d Any ideas? • What are the practical differences between an IP address and a server?

  My understanding of IPs and other DNS-type server-related issues really falls short (read: exteme noob). I know a dedicated server would increase speed. What, if any, difference in speed would a dedicated IP make? Am I correct in understanding the Best Practices from Yahoo that I could use the second IP to serve up some content, which would increase the number of parallel downloads for the user? Or are both IPs (purchase from same hosting account) going to point to the same server? Or how does it work? Are there other optimization things I should be aware of when thinking of purchasing a dedicated IP? Clarification I am talking about the speed of serving the webpages, i.e. the speed of my website. Yes, I know that IP and server are completely different, not even opposites, just different. But this, indeed, is my question! The Question Reformulated: Will having a second (dedicated) IP on my website speed up the time that it will load and display for the user? Or does that have nothing at all to do with IP, and is only a server issue? I'm sorry if this is still unclear. This is a real question though, I may just not be wording it well.

  I have a Linux fileserver serving up /home for linux and windows users. I was able to connect from my windows client, but not from a DC. Then suddenly I could connect from the DC too. The linux servers run Centrify clients, and as such are part of the domain. All on same subnet. This is what the the log.smbd says, repeatedly: [2010/02/11 11:25:57, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_data(534) read_data: read failure for 4 bytes to client 192.168.200.3. Error = Connection reset by peer On Windows it appeared as an "unknown error". EDIT: the error code is "0x80004005". We are developing a system depended on the samba share, and are worried this will appear again. It would be nice to pin point the root of this. Any ideas what this might be? Places to look?

• Couchdb failing test suite on Linux

  Hi I've been trying to install CouchDB on my webfusion virtual server. I followed the latest instructions from the webfusion forum (see: http://forum.webfaction.com/viewtopic.php?id=2355 ) and it runs (just) Futon is very sluggish and I get 502 errors. Anyway when I run the test suite it fails on multiple tests. Webfaction support have been great but don't have erlang experience to interpret the error logs. Can anyone help me know what might be wrong? Test suite result: basics, all_docs, attachments, attachments_multipart, attachment_names, compact, config, conflicts, delayed_commits, design_docs, design_options all the errors are: Exception raised: {"error":"unknown","reason":"\u000d\u000a502 Bad Gateway\u000d\u000a\u000d\u000a<\h1502 Bad Gateway\u000d\u000a nginx\u000d\u000a\u000d\u000a\u000d\u000a"} except for 'compact; which also has: Assertion failed: xhr.responseText == "This is a base64 encoded text" Assertion failed: xhr.getResponseHeader("Content-Type") == "text/plain" I'm stumped.
