  • Why isnt my data persisting with nskeyedarchiver?

    - by aking63
    Im just working on what should be the "finishing touches" of my first iPhone game. For some reason, when I save with NSKeyedArchiver/Unarchiver, the data seems to load once and then gets lost or something. Here's what I've been able to deduce: When I save in this viewController, pop to the previous one, and then push back into this one, the data is saved and prints as I want it to. But when I save in this viewController, then push a new one and pop back into this one, the data is lost. Any idea why this might be happening? Do I have this set up all wrong? I copied it from a book months ago. Here's the methods I use to save and load. - (void) saveGameData { NSLog(@"LS:saveGameData"); // SAVE DATA IMMEDIATELY NSArray *paths = NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains(NSDocumentDirectory, NSUserDomainMask, YES); NSString *documentsDirectory = [paths objectAtIndex:0]; NSString *gameStatePath = [documentsDirectory stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"gameState.dat"]; NSMutableData *gameSave= [NSMutableData data]; NSKeyedArchiver *encoder = [[NSKeyedArchiver alloc] initForWritingWithMutableData:gameSave]; [encoder encodeObject:categoryLockStateArray forKey:kCategoryLockStateArray]; [encoder encodeObject:self.levelsPlist forKey:@"levelsPlist"]; [encoder finishEncoding]; [gameSave writeToFile:gameStatePath atomically:YES]; NSLog(@"encoded catLockState:%@",categoryLockStateArray); } - (void) loadGameData { NSLog(@"loadGameData"); // If there is a saved file, perform the load NSMutableData *gameData = [NSData dataWithContentsOfFile:[[NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains(NSDocumentDirectory, NSUserDomainMask, YES) objectAtIndex:0] stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"gameState.dat"]]; // LOAD GAME DATA if (gameData) { NSLog(@"-Loaded Game Data-"); NSKeyedUnarchiver *unarchiver = [[NSKeyedUnarchiver alloc] initForReadingWithData:gameData]; self.levelsPlist = [unarchiver decodeObjectForKey:@"levelsPlist"]; categoryLockStateArray = [unarchiver decodeObjectForKey:kCategoryLockStateArray]; NSLog(@"decoded catLockState:%@",categoryLockStateArray); } // CREATE GAME DATA else { NSLog(@"-Created Game Data-"); self.levelsPlist = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] initWithContentsOfFile:[[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:kLevelsPlist ofType:@"plist"]]; } if (!categoryLockStateArray) { NSLog(@"-Created categoryLockStateArray-"); categoryLockStateArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithCapacity:[[self.levelsPlist allKeys] count]]; for (int i=0; i<[[self.levelsPlist allKeys] count]; i++) { [categoryLockStateArray insertObject:[NSNumber numberWithBool:FALSE] atIndex:i]; } } // set the properties of the categories self.categoryNames = [self.levelsPlist allKeys]; NUM_CATEGORIES = [self.categoryNames count]; thisCatCopy = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] initWithDictionary:[[levelsPlist objectForKey:[self.categoryNames objectAtIndex:pageControl.currentPage]] mutableCopy]]; NUM_FINISHED = [[thisCatCopy objectForKey:kNumLevelsBeatenInCategory] intValue]; }

  • self.window.rootViewController vs window addSubview

    - by Gazzer
I've noticed a lot of examples for iPhone apps in the Application Delegate - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application have [window addSubview: someController.view]; (1) as opposed to self.window.rootViewController = self.someController; (2) Is there any practical reason to use one over the other? Is one technically correct? Do controller's have the an equivalent command to number (2) like self.someController.rootController = self.someOtherController; // pseudocode

  • persistent view controller

    - by derrichh
Im building an iphone radio application and I want to have the controls, play, pause, stop, etc. in a tool bar (a custom view controller) at the bottom of the application. I want to keep this there throughout all the views so you can control the audio while navigating through the other parts of the application (multiple view/table controllers). Is there a way to create a view that stays in place like a tab bar?

  • Problem with NSString

    - by Kassar
I have a problem with NSString in dynamic binding ... I manipulate with Facebook library, when i'll share my story i should make an instance of FBStreamDialog and charge its attributes with values of the story then show it, like this: FBStreamDialog* dialog = [[[FBStreamDialog alloc] init]autorelease]; dialog.delegate = self; dialog.userMessagePrompt = @"prompt"; NSString* sss=@"{ \"name\":\"%@\", \"href\":\"%@\", \"caption\":\"%@\", \"description\":\"%@\" , \"media\":[{ \"type\":\"image\", \"src\":\"%@\", \"href\":\"%@\" }] }"; dialog.attachment = [NSString stringWithFormat:sss,@"title",@"http://www.docs.com/hi.html",@"caption",@"summary",@"http://www.images.com/206.jpg",@"http://www.images.com/206.jpg"]; NSLog(@"ATTACHMENT: %@",dialog.attachment); The code above is running well. But my problem is when i want to charge these attributes dynamically like this: BStreamDialog* dialog = [[[FBStreamDialog alloc] init]autorelease]; dialog.delegate = self; dialog.userMessagePrompt = @"prompt"; NSString* sss=@"{ \"name\":\"%@\", \"href\":\"%@\", \"caption\":\"%@\", \"description\":\"%@\" , \"media\":[{ \"type\":\"image\", \"src\":\"%@\", \"href\":\"%@\" }] }"; dialog.attachment = [NSString stringWithFormat:sss,story.title,story.link,story.caption,story.summary,story.imagelink,story.imagelink]; NSLog(@"ATTACHMENT: %@",dialog.attachment); It's running without crash but it doesn't share the story it share a blank one !!! Although, it shows in the console (output of NSLog) the value of attachment is true !!! Could you plz help me. Sorry for my english.

  • timeout stringwithcontentsofurl

Hi, I have this call to stringwithcontentsofurl: [NSString stringWithContentsOfURL:url usedEncoding:NSASCIIStringEncoding error:nil]; How can I give that a simple timeout? I don't want to use threads or operation queues (the content of the url is about 100 characters), I just don't want to wait too long when the connection is slow.

  • Mac OS X: Best way to do runtime check for retina display?

    - by Todd Ditchendorf
Given a Cocoa application which runs on Mac OS X 10.7 and later: What is the best way to check, at runtime, if your app is currently running on a Mac with at least one retina display attached? If checking for this sort of thing is just really wrong-headed, I fully welcome a well-reasoned explanation of why. But I'd still like to know :). It seems likely you could just do a check specifically for the new Mac Book Pro "Retina" hardware (the only Mac at this time which currently has a retina display), but ideally, I'd really prefer a more general/generic/future-proof way to check than this. Ideally, I'd like to know how to detect the retina display, not the specific Mac model which currently happens to ship with a retina display.

  • Issues using UITapGestureRecognizers in Interface Builder

    - by 5StringRyan
I'm attempting to use the UITapGestureRecognizer object that can be found in Interface Builder. I've dragged a single "UITapGestureRecognizer" from the object library to a single view xib. I then create an IBAction method from this tap gesture, for a simple test, I'm just printing an "NSLog" message to the console once there is a tap on the view. I've run this, and the tap method isn't being called. I right click the view in IB and I noticed that there is a warning "!" on the view's "Outlook Collections" I see: Outlook Collections gestureRecognizers - Tap Gesture Recognizer (!) The warning states: UIView does not have an outlet collection named gestureRecognizers. What do I need to do to remedy this?

  • UIPageViewController: How to refer the UIPicker selected Value from 1 Viewcontroller to another...

    - by Abhinav
I am referring the code from here, please have look at the code while answering my question : http://www.ioslearner.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/UIPageViewControllerDemo.zip important notes and few changes: I basically have a viewcontroller and contentviewcontroller . ViewController - have following UIPAgeViewController Datasource and Deligate UIPickerView - upon next and previous page turn the value in the PickerView changes contentviewcontroller - has following UIWebview - defined in Viewdidload of contentviewcontroller which dynamically fetches a html page based upon the string value (LabelContents) sent through following method -(UIViewController *)pageViewController:(UIPageViewController *)pageViewController viewControllerBeforeViewController:(UIViewController *)viewController is there a way to populate the UIWebview in contentviewcontroller based upon the row selected in UIPickerView ? Kindly help.

  • NSNotifications vs delegate for multiple instances of same protocol

    - by Brent Traut
I could use some architectural advice. I've run into the following problem a few times now and I've never found a truly elegant way to solve it. The issue, described at the highest level possible:I have a parent class that would like to act as the delegate for multiple children (all using the same protocol), but when the children call methods on the parent, the parent no longer knows which child is making the call. I would like to use loose coupling (delegates/protocols or notifications) rather than direct calls. I don't need multiple handlers, so notifications seem like they might be overkill. To illustrate the problem, let me try a super-simplified example: I start with a parent view controller (and corresponding view). I create three child views and insert each of them into the parent view. I would like the parent view controller to be notified whenever the user touches one of the children. There are a few options to notify the parent: Define a protocol. The parent implements the protocol and sets itself as the delegate to each of the children. When the user touches a child view, its view controller calls its delegate (the parent). In this case, the parent is notified that a view is touched, but it doesn't know which one. Not good enough. Same as #1, but define the methods in the protocol to also pass some sort of identifier. When the child tells its delegate that it was touched, it also passes a pointer to itself. This way, the parent know exactly which view was touched. It just seems really strange for an object to pass a reference to itself. Use NSNotifications. The parent defines a separate method for each of the three children and then subscribes to the "viewWasTouched" notification for each of the three children as the notification sender. The children don't need to attach themselves to the user dictionary, but they do need to send the notification with a pointer to themselves as the scope. Same as #4, but rather than using separate methods, the parent could just use one with a switch case or other branching along with the notification's sender to determine which path to take. Create multiple man-in-the-middle classes that act as the delegates to the child views and then call methods on the parent either with a pointer to the child or with some other differentiating factor. This approach doesn't seem scalable. Are any of these approaches considered best practice? I can't say for sure, but it feels like I'm missing something more obvious/elegant.

  • NSColor, 10.6 and Gamma 2.2

    - by Stephen Blinkhorn
With Snow Leopard the default gamma changed from 1.8 to 2.2. I happen to be working on a few Mac apps that use a very dark custom colour scheme provided by Cocoa. On 10.5 it looks fine but on 10.6 with the new gamma it's much darker and really hard on the eyes. The colour scheme is defined using numerous [NSColor colorWithCalibratedRed:green:blue:alpha:] objects within a theme class. Is there any way to 'convert' an NSColor object so that it displays on 10.6 exactly as it would on 10.5 with the old 1.8 gamma? I know this can be achieved globally from within System Preferences but that's not what I'm after.

  • How do I enable spell checking within an NSTextField?

    - by Luke
I have an NSTextField that I would like to enable "as-you-type" spell checking. When I load my application I can do this from the Menu Bar Edit Spelling and Grammar Check Spelling While Typing. I would like this option to be enabled by default. Within IB I can enable this for a NSTextView but I would like to use NSTextField for this part of the UI. Thank you.

  • Recursively listing, and storing, directory contents

    - by enchilada
I know how to recursively list directory contents. I will be using Snow Leopard's enumeratorAtURL:includingPropertiesForKeys:options:errorHandler: method to do this. However I want to store my findings into a object hierarchy (of, say, objects of a custom FileOrDirectory class that has isLeaf, children, and count attributes). I need to pre-load the directory and file structure into such a object hierarchy, in order to do whatever I want with NSTreeController and whatnot. I guess the trickiest thing here is to get the children attribute correct in the object hierarchy. Any ideas?

  • how to set a tableview delegate

    - by dubbeat
Hi, I'm trying to use a tableview without using a nib and without using a UITableViewController. I have added a UITableView instance to a UIViewController Like So mytable = [[UITableView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(22, 207, 270, 233)]; [mytable setDelegate:self]; [self.view mytable]; Also I have added the following table view methods to my UIViewController (cut for brevities sake) - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath - (CGFloat)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView heightForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath - (NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger)section { - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { I am getting a warning saying that my UIViewController does not implement UITableView delegate protocol. Whats the correct way to tell the table view where its delegate methods are? (This is my first attempt at trying to use a UITableView without selecting the UITableTableview controller from the new file options)

  • Passing NULL value

    - by FFXIII
Hi. I use an instance of NSXMLParser. I store found chars in NSMutableStrings that are stored in an NSMutableDictionary and these Dicts are then added to an NSMutableArray. When I test this everything seems normal: I count 1 array, x dictionnaries and x strings. In a detailview controller file I want to show my parsed results. I call the class where everthing is stored but I get (null) returned. This is what I do (wrong): XMLParser.h @interface XMLParser : NSObject { NSMutableArray *array; NSMUtableDictionary *dictionary; NSSMutabletring *element; } @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableArray *array; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableDictionary *dictionary; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableString *element; XMLParser.m @synthesize array, dictionary, element; //parsing goes on here & works fine //so 'element' is filled with content and stored in a dict in an array //and released at the end of the file In my controller file I do this: controller.h @class XMLParser; @interface controller : UIViewController { XMLParser *aXMLParser; } @property (nonatomic, retain) XMLParser *aXMLParser; controller.m #import "XMLParser.h" @synthesize aXMLParser; - (void)viewDidLoad { NSLog(@"test array: %@", aXMLParser.array); NSLog(@"test dict: %@", aXMLParser.dictionary); NSLog(@"test element: %@", aXMLParser.element); } When I test the value of my array, a dict or an element in the XMLParser.h file I get my result. What am I doing wrong so I can't call my results in my controller file? Any help is welcome, because I'm pretty stuck right now :/

  • Showing/Hiding windows iPhone Dev

    - by Cal S
In my iPhone app I am developing, I have defined two windows: @interface The_NoteAppDelegate : NSObject <UIApplicationDelegate> { IBOutlet UIWindow *newNoteWindow; IBOutlet UIWindow *homeWindow; } @property (nonatomic, retain) UIWindow *newNoteWindow; @property (nonatomic, retain) UIWindow *homeWindow; and they are linked correctly in IB - but how do I show/hide these windows? [homeWindow makeKeyAndVisible]; works in appDidFinishLaunching but when I try [newNoteWindow makeKeyAndVisible]; again to open the other window (on a button touch event) in front of the other, the app freezes. I know this is a very n00by question but please help me out :)

  • NSTableView - Trying to fit exactly 9 rows

    - by Justin808
Hi, I'm trying to size the rows of a NSTableView to exactly 9 rows fit. I've tried [menuTableView setRowHeight:floor(menuRect.size.height / 9)]; and I've tried [menuTableView setRowHeight:(menuRect.size.height / 9)]; and [menuTableView setRowHeight:ceil(menuRect.size.height / 9)]; but all of them have the same issue, if I've selected row 0 then row 9 is clipped at the bottom and if I select row 9 then row 0 is clipped at the top. How can I set up a NSTableView to show 9 full rows so no matter what there is never a partial row visible? Thanks, edit: Yes menuRect is the frame for the menuTableView
