• How can I best geocode a table of addresses in SQL Server?

  I've got a SQL Server 2008 table with addresses. I've got some C# code that can individually geocode the addresses. I've got a Google Maps API for geocoding. Now I'm trying to figure out the most efficient way to use these resources. I could write a console app that manually updates the tables using my C# library, but the data I have is updated periodically. I will be performing an import routine of some sort and I'm thinking it would be 'simplest' to perform the geocoding as the import occurs. I'm not so strong on SQL Server capabilities, so I'm looking for advice. I've considered letting the import call an assembly I create that would be referenced in SQL Server, but read that Sql Server 2008 has made it virtually impossible to reference your own DLL. So my next guess is having the import call a web service to pass in the address and update the table with the results, but I've not had much luck in finding info on this method. Any advice?

• Best way to fetch data from a single database table with multiple threads?

  Hi, we have a system where we collect data every second on user activity on multiple web sites. we dump that data into a database X (say MS SQL Server). we now need to fetch data from this single table from daatbase X and insert into database Y (say mySql). we want to fetch time based data from database X through multiple threads so that we fetch as fast as we can. Once fetched and stored in database Y, we will delete data from database X. Are there any best practices on this sort of design? any specific things to take care on table design like sharing or something? Are there any other things that we need to take care to make sure we fetch it as fast as we can from threads running on multiple machines? Thanks in advance! Ravi

  hey all, im using linq2SQL to grab information from my SQL database, i have a gridview which shows all the top level information, in this case a list of groups (i.e admin, users and so on) when a user clicks say the admin group, i want to be able to show each member in that group, i have the following code which grabs the information from the database, DataClassesDataContext dc = new DataClassesDataContext(); GridViewRow row = GridView1.SelectedRow; var query1 = from p in dc.Users where p.groups.GroupID == Int32.Parse(row.Cells[1].Text) select new { p.Name, p.Address, p.Contact Number, p.Bio, }; i no i can use gridview again to display the results of the query, but this doesnt really look nice as it shows too much information at one, how would i go about having some sort of display which will show just one user at a time giving me the chance to click next and back ? thanks

• 8-direction path finding algorithm

  I'm having trouble finding the right pathfinding algorithm for some AI I'm working on. I have players on a pitch, moving around freely (not stuck to a grid), but they are confined to moving in 8 directions (N NE E etc.) I was working on using A*, and a graph for this. But I realised, every node on the graph is equally far apart, and all the edges have the same weight - since the pitch is rectangular. And the number of nodes is enormous (being a large pitch, with them able to move between 1 pixel and another) I figured there must be another algorithm, optimised for this sort of thing?

• ASP.NET MVC 3 - What features do you want to see?

  I know a bunch of people that are really enjoying the improvements that ASP.NET MVC 2 made over the first release. I have just started to migrate our MVC 1 project over and so far areas has totally cleaned up the subfolder mess we had in our large scale application. As I dive deeper into all the improvements and changes that were made I still keep thinking to myself man it would be nice if they had x in this release. For isntance, I would love it if they had some sort of dependency injection built in instead of having to use third party solutions. My real question is now that ASP.NET MVC 2 is out in the wild, what features do want/wish the team had implemented and hope they will implement for ASP.NET MVC 3?

• How can I stop sorl thumbnail from breaking with very long filenames?

  I've noticed that when working with SORL thumbnail, sometimes a user will upload an image with a very long filename, longer than the varfield in the database can hold. The name gets truncated in the database and the project gives errors whenever the image is requested. Is there a smart and safe way to have django automatically truncate long filenames in sorl uploads (prior to saving them in the database) to prevent this sort of thing? • Setup Project is not correctly registering assembly in GAC

  I have created a custom Rewrite Provider for IIS 7 following instructions in this article: Developing a Custom Rewrite Provider for URL Rewrite Module To simplify deployment, I have created a VS2010 Setup Project and configured it to deploy my assembly to GAC. When I run the installer, it completes successfully, and appears to be registered the assembly in GAC (I have verified using gacutil.exe /l). However, when I go to IIS Manager to register the new rewrite provider it is not displayed in the list of available providers. I have also tried to install the assembly manually using gacutil.exe /if. This does work and makes assembly visible in the list of available providers in IIS Manager. Am I missing some sort of configuration in my Setup Project?

  How can I create automatic GUI using XML file in C#? Should I write a parser for the file and define a sort of "protocol" for the file's structure, and after the parse - create the GUI controls manually (respective to the data in the files)? Or is there a better way? Is there a tool, or a built-in code in the .NET environment which can do that for me automatically? (I am currently working with win forms, but I am willing to consider any other technology - as long as it's supported in MONO, since the code should be portable to Linux as well).

• Detect WebKit Version 525 and Below With RegEx

  I'm no good at Regular Expressions, really! I would like to specifically detect WebKit browsers below version 525. I have a regular expression [/WebKit\/[\d.]+/.exec(navigator.appVersion)] that correctly returns WebKit/5….…, really, I'd like it to return only the version number, but if the browser isn't WebKit, return null, or better still 0. For example, if the browser was Trident, Presto or Gecko, return null, whereas if the browser is WebKit, return it's version number. To clarify, I would like the regular expression to check if navigator.appVersion contains WebKit and if it does not, return null, if it does, return the version number. I appreciate all your help! Please let's keep this focused, let's not flirt with jQuery or the sort, it's overkill in this scenario.

• Cropping an image, saving output to a new file and get crop coordinates

  I'm interfacing with a service that allows you to upload an image, and also upload coordinates of a thumbnail of that image. I'm thinking that (if there isn't some sort of prefab Activity specifically for this) that I can use Android's crop utility. The only problem is that I can't overwrite the original file, the crop window needs to have a custom message (instead of "crop image"), and I'll need the coordinates of the crop. Is this possible? Is there another way to do this without writing my own Activity?

• PyQt4, QThread and opening big files without freezing the GUI

  Hi, I would like to ask how to read a big file from disk and maintain the PyQt4 UI responsive (not blocked). I had moved the load of the file to a QThread subclass but my GUI thread get freezed. Any suggestions? I think it must be something with the GIL but I don't know how to sort it? EDIT: I am using vtkGDCMImageReader from the GDCM project to read a multiframe DICOM image and display it with vtk and pyqt4.   I sort of understand the concept of database normalization but always have a hard time explaining it in plain English especially for a job interview. I have read the wikipedia post, but still find it hard to explain the concept to none developers. "Design a database in a way not to get duplicated data" is the first thing that comes to mind. Does anyone was a nice way to explain the concept of database normalization in plain English. And what are some nice examples to show the differences between first, second and third normal forms. Say you go to a job interview and the person asks: Explain the concept of normalization and how would go about designing a normalized database. What key points are the interviewer looking for?

• Detecting a Key Press Squashed by Another Application

  I have a WPF application I'm planning to use as an overlay for a DirectX game (specifically Bad Company 2). I'm using WM_KEYBOARD_LL hook to detect KeyDown events so I can bring my app to the foreground when a specific button is pressed. This works perfectly except for when the game is running (I've also noticed this problem with Window's "Chess Titans" so it may be a DirectX thing). As far as I can work out, when the game detects a keyboard press, it "eats" the event and doesn't pass the CallNextHookEx() method like it should, which would allow the key press message to be moved along to the next application in the queue. I'm wondering if there's any sort of work-around to this? It seems kind of unfair that a single application can just willy-nilly eat up messages like that. • Extracting Text from between parentheses in PHP using preg_replace

  I am trying to take a string of text like so: $string = "This (1) is (2) my (3) example (4) text"; In every instance where there is a positive integer inside of parentheses, I'd like to replace that with simply the integer itself. The code I'm using now is: $result = preg_replace("((\d+))", "$0", $string); But I keep getting a "Delimiter must not be alphanumeric or backslash" error. Any thoughts? I know there are other questions on here that sort of answer the question, but my knowledge of regex is not enough to switch it over to this example.

• Suggestion for chkstk.asm stackoverflow exception in C++ with Visual Studio 2010

  I am working with an implementation of merge sort. I am doing C++ Visual Studio 2010. But when I took a array of 300000 integers for timing, it is showing an unhandled stackoverflow exception and taking me to a readonly file named "chkstk.asm". I reduced the size to 200000 and it worked. Again the same code worked with C-free 4 editor (mingw 2.95) without any problem while the size was 400000. Do you have any suggestion to get the code working in Visual Studio? May be the recursion in the mergesort is causing the problem.

• AS3: How to access pixel data efficiently?

  I'm working a game. The game requires entities to analyse an image and head towards pixels with specific properties (high red channel, etc.) I've looked into Pixel Bender, but this only seems useful for writing new colors to the image. At the moment, even at a low resolution (200x200) just one entity scanning the image slows to 1-2 Frames/second. I'm embedding the image and instance it as a Bitmap as a child of the stage. The 1-2 FPS situation is using BitmapData.getPixel() (on each pixel) with a distance calculation beforehand. I'm wondering if there's any way I can do this more efficiently... My first thought was some sort of spatial partioning coupled with splitting the image up into many smaller pieces. I also feel like Pixel Bender should be able to help somehow, however I've had little experience with it. Cheers for any help. Jonathan

• PHP/MySQL User system w/ groups.

  I have a user system set up in a 'users' table, and I have groups set up in a 'groups' table. Essentially, I want users to be able to join any and all the groups that they want, in the same was as one would on facebook. How would one go about structuring this in a mysql/php database system? Just a quick summary would be helpful! I've looked around, but I can only find info on creating 'groups' where the users just have a sort of 1, 2 or 3 permission rank. Thanks!

• .NET how to output csv from enumeration of anonymous type?

  Using FileHelpers, I decorated a class with [DelimitedRecord(",")] and was going to output an enumeration of objects of that type as CSV. But, it didn't work because my class inherits from ActiveRecordLinqBase<T>, which caused some problems. So, I was wondering if I could just select an enumeration of anonymous types and somehow have filehelpers generate csv from that. I don't like having to define a class just for FileHelpers to output csv. I would be open to using another csv library, but FileHelpers is proven. EDIT @Foovanadil: This would be the sort of thing I am trying to do: CreateCSV(MyCollection.Select(x=>new{ x.Prop1, x.Prop2, x.Prop3 })); Gives you: Prop1,Prop2,Prop3 val1a,val2a,val3a, val1b,val2b,val3b, etc.....

• .Net friendly, local, key-value pair, replicatable datastore

  I am looking for a key/value type datastore with very specific requirements. Anyone know anything that will work? Needs to be a component of some sort. No additional installation needed. The datastore needs to be on the local hard drive. I am using VB.Net for a desktop app running Windows XP through 7 so it needs to callable by that environment. It needs to replicatable. If I have four copies of my app running on the network, each local copy of the datastore needs to replicate with the others. As close to real time as possible. The first three are easy, I can do that with ADO.Net out of the box. The last one, replication, is the one I do not have answer to. Does such an animal exist? Thanks, Brad

  this seems to be a reoccurring issue: we receive a bug report for our software and with it tons of traces or logfiles. since finding errors is much easier when having a visualization of the log messages/events over time it is convenient to use a tool that can display the progression of events in a graph etc. (e.g. wireshark (http://www.wireshark.org) for analyzing network traffic) what tool do you use for such a purpose? the problem with most tools i used so far is that they mercilessly break down when you feed them huge data traces ( 1GB) so some criteria for such a tool would be: can deal with huge input files ( 1 GB) is really fast (so you don't have to get coffee while a file is loading) has some sort of filtering mechanism

• Providing multi-version databases for backward compatibility for production applications/databases.

  How can I manage multiple versions of a database easily? I have some data (as views as selects for data originating in tables from other schemas), which other database may reference using various means including database synonyms & links. I wish to provide a sort of interface/guarantee in-case future for applications/databases which use this data. All of this is for in the event i need to update the views for correctness or applicability inside my database. How can i achieve this in a maintained, controlled and easy way? • Changing the x-axis of seqlogo figures in matlab

  I'm making a large number of seqlogos programatically. They are hundreds of columns wide and so running a seqlogo normally creates letters that are too thin to see. I've noticed that I only care about a few of these columns (not necessarily consecutive columns) ... most are noise but some are highly conserved. I use something like this snippet: conserve_cell = seqlogo(wide_seqs, 'displaylogo', false); high_bit_cols = any(conserve_cell{2}>1.0,1); [~, handle] = seqlogo(wide_seqs(:,high_bit_cols )); Although when I do this I lose the information about which columns the data came from. Normally I would just change the x-axis of the seqlogo. However, seqlogo's are some sort of crazy java-based object and calls like: set(handle, 'xticklabel', num2str(find(high_bit_cols))) don't work.   Using SQL server 2008. I have a family tree of animals stored in a table, and want to give some information on how 'genetically diverse' (or not) the offspring is. In SQL how can I produce sensible metrics to show how closely related the parents are? Perhaps some sort of percentage of shared blood, or a number of generations to go back before there is a shared ancestor?
