• Technical differences between square and hexagon for a grid?

- by Marlon Dias
I'm developing a 2D city-building game and trying to decide on the type of grid. There will be vehicles, so the unit movement is important too. I know there are visual differences for using Squares or Hexagons, what I want know is: What are the issues for programming each type of grid regarding implementation and performance? Is there a tradeoff or specific benefit for using one of them in a game context?

• How can I create a square 10x10 grid using nested for loops in Java? [migrated]

- by help
I'm trying to create a 10x10 grid using for loops in Java. I'm able to create rows going up and down but not repeating. for(int i = 1; i < temperatures.length; i++) { temperatures[i] = (temperatures[i-1] + 12) / 2; //takes average of 12 and previous temp } } public void paint(Graphics g) { for(int y = 1; y < 9; y++) { g.setColor(Color.black); g.drawRect(10, 10, 10, 10); g.drawRect(10, 10, 10, 20); g.drawRect(10, 10, 10, 30); g.drawRect(10, 10, 10, 40); g.drawRect(10, 10, 10, 50); g.drawRect(10, 10, 10, 60); g.drawRect(10, 10, 10, 70); g.drawRect(10, 10, 10, 80); g.drawRect(10, 10, 10, 90); g.drawRect(10, 10, 10, 100); for(int x = 1; x < 9; x++) { g.setColor(Color.black); g.drawRect(10, 10, 10, 10); g.drawRect(10, 10, 20, 10); g.drawRect(10, 10, 30, 10); g.drawRect(10, 10, 40, 10); g.drawRect(10, 10, 50, 10); g.drawRect(10, 10, 60, 10); g.drawRect(10, 10, 70, 10); g.drawRect(10, 10, 80, 10); g.drawRect(10, 10, 90, 10); g.drawRect(10, 10, 100, 10); } } } }

• How can I screen clients that try to register multiple times?

- by Aba Dov
My company offers a bonus to every client that register. We would like to prevent people from abusing this by registering several times. we thought about filtering clients by ip (there is a problem with workplaces where all stations have the same ip) cookies (if cookies are not allowed we might lose a client) I would like your opinions on these two methods and will be glad to hear about new ones. thanks

• Why are textures always square powers of two? What if they aren't?

- by Keavon
Why are the resolution of textures in games always a power of two (128x128, 256x256, 512x512, 1024x1024, etc.)? Wouldn't it be smart to save on the game's file size and make the texture exactly fit the UV unwrapped model? What would happen if there was a texture that was not a power of two? Would it be incorrect to have a texture be something like 256x512, or 512x1024? Or would this cause the problems that non-power-of-two textures may cause?

• Why would more CPU cores on virtual machine slow compile times?

- by Sid
[edit#2] If anyone from VMWare can hit me up with a copy of VMWare Fusion, I'd be more than happy to do the same as a VirtualBox vs VMWare comparison. Somehow I suspect the VMWare hypervisor will be better tuned for hyperthreading (see my answer too) I'm seeing something curious. As I increase the number of cores on my Windows 7 x64 virtual machine, the overall compile time increases instead of decreasing. Compiling is usually very well suited for parallel processing as in the middle part (post dependency mapping) you can simply call a compiler instance on each of your .c/.cpp/.cs/whatever file to build partial objects for the linker to take over. So I would have imagined that compiling would actually scale very well with # of cores. But what I'm seeing is: 8 cores: 1.89 sec 4 cores: 1.33 sec 2 cores: 1.24 sec 1 core: 1.15 sec Is this simply a design artifact due to a particular vendor's hypervisor implementation (type2:virtualbox in my case) or something more pervasive across more VMs to make hypervisor implementations more simpler? With so many factors, I seem to be able to make arguments both for and against this behavior - so if someone knows more about this than me, I'd be curious to read your answer. Thanks Sid [edit:addressing comments] @MartinBeckett: Cold compiles were discarded. @MonsterTruck: Couldn't find an opensource project to compile directly. Would be great but can't screwup my dev env right now. @Mr Lister, @philosodad: Have 8 hw threads, using VirtualBox, so should be 1:1 mapping without emulation @Thorbjorn: I have 6.5GB for the VM and a smallish VS2012 project - it's quite unlikely that I'm swapping in/out trashing the page file. @All: If someone can point to an open source VS2010/VS2012 project, that might be a better community reference than my (proprietary) VS2012 project. Orchard and DNN seem to need environment tweaking to compile in VS2012. I really would like to see if someone with VMWare Fusion also sees this (for VMWare vs VirtualBox compartmentalization) Test details: Hardware: Macbook Pro Retina CPU : Core i7 @ 2.3Ghz (quad core, hyper threaded = 8 cores in windows task manager) Memory : 16 GB Disk : 256GB SSD Host OS: Mac OS X 10.8 VM type: VirtualBox 4.1.18 (type 2 hypervisor) Guest OS: Windows 7 x64 SP1 Compiler: VS2012 compiling a solution with 3 C# Azure projects Compile times measure by VS2012 plugin called 'VSCommands' All tests run 5 times, first 2 runs discarded, last 3 averaged

• Why is my primitive xna square not drawn/shown?

- by Mech0z
I have made this class to draw a rectangle, but I cant get it to be drawn, I have no issues displaying a 3d model created in 3dmax, but shown these primitives seems much harder I use this to create it board = new Board(Vector3.Zero, 1000, 1000, Color.Yellow); And here is the implementation using System; using System.Net; using System.Windows; using System.Windows.Controls; using System.Windows.Documents; using System.Windows.Ink; using System.Windows.Input; using System.Windows.Shapes; using Quadro.Models; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Graphics; namespace Quadro { public class Board : IGraphicObject { //Private Fields private Vector3 modelPosition; private BasicEffect effect; private VertexPositionColor[] vertices; private Matrix rotationMatrix; private GraphicsDevice graphicsDevice; private Matrix cameraProjection; //Constructor public Board(Vector3 position, float length, float width, Color color) { var _color = color; vertices = new VertexPositionColor[6]; vertices[0].Position = new Vector3(position.X, position.Y, position.Z); vertices[1].Position = new Vector3(position.X, position.Y + width, position.Z); vertices[2].Position = new Vector3(position.X + length, position.Y, position.Z); vertices[3].Position = new Vector3(position.X + length, position.Y, position.Z); vertices[4].Position = new Vector3(position.X, position.Y + width, position.Z); vertices[5].Position = new Vector3(position.X + length, position.Y + width, position.Z); for(int i = 0; i < vertices.Length; i++) { vertices[i].Color = color; } initFields(); } private void initFields() { graphicsDevice = SharedGraphicsDeviceManager.Current.GraphicsDevice; effect = new BasicEffect(graphicsDevice); modelPosition = Vector3.Zero; float screenWidth = (float)graphicsDevice.Viewport.Width; float screenHeight = (float)graphicsDevice.Viewport.Height; float aspectRatio = screenWidth / screenHeight; this.cameraProjection = Matrix.CreatePerspectiveFieldOfView(MathHelper.ToRadians(45.0f), aspectRatio, 1.0f, 10000.0f); this.rotationMatrix = Matrix.Identity; } //Public Methods public void Update(GameTimerEventArgs e) { } public void Draw(Vector3 cameraPosition, GameTimerEventArgs e) { Matrix cameraView = Matrix.CreateLookAt(cameraPosition, Vector3.Zero, Vector3.Up); foreach (EffectPass pass in effect.CurrentTechnique.Passes) { pass.Apply(); effect.World = rotationMatrix * Matrix.CreateTranslation(modelPosition); effect.View = cameraView; effect.Projection = cameraProjection; graphicsDevice.DrawUserPrimitives(PrimitiveType.TriangleList, vertices, 0, 2, VertexPositionColor.VertexDeclaration); } } public void Rotate(Matrix rotationMatrix) { this.rotationMatrix = rotationMatrix; } public void Move(Vector3 moveVector) { this.modelPosition += moveVector; } } }

• Basic Java drawing program: issue with squares

- by Caminek
I'm trying to create a simple drawing program that creates a square where the user clicks and drags. The square displays correctly as long as either x or y remain positive with respect to the original click position. If both x and y are negative with respect to the original click position, the square grows/shrinks, but also wanders about the screen. Is there a way to swap the origin point from top-left to bottom-right or to keep the square from wandering?

• How do I count the times each number appears in columns of numbers?

- by Andy C.
I am sure this must be easy, but I am inexperienced. About the best way to think of my problem is to think of it as trying to sort and then count lottery numbers. To stay simple, let's do a Pick 3 game. Let's look at 10 drawings. I would split each drawn number into a separate column: DATE BALL#1 BALL#2 BALL#3 3/1 1 3 5 3/2 3 7 8 3/3 2 2 1 3/4 5 7 6 3/5 2 3 1 3/6 0 5 9 3/7 3 7 0 3/8 6 8 4 3/9 2 4 3 3/10 7 1 2 I would like to be able to build formulas into cells that would tell me how many times each number appeared overall, and how many times each number appeared in the position it occurred. Like this (using the above example): Number Overall Count Ball#1 Count Ball#2 Count Ball#3 Count 0 2 1 0 1 1 4 1 1 2 (That is, The number zero appears twice overall, and came up once as the first number drawn; zero times as the middle ball; and once as the third ball. Likewise, the number 1 was drawn four times in our 10-day period. It was the first ball once, the second ball once and the third ball twice.) And so on. All help appreciated. I have access to Excel and Microsoft Works, or of course if there is a Google Docs way to handle this All thanks for any help.

• What's my best approach on this simple hierarchy Java Problem?

- by Nazgulled
First, I'm sorry for the question title but I can't think of a better one to describe my problem. Feel free to change it :) Let's say I have this abstract class Box which implements a couple of constructors, methods and whatever on some private variables. Then I have a couple of sub classes like BoxA and BoxB. Both of these implement extra things. Now I have another abstract class Shape and a few sub classes like Square and Circle. For both BoxA and BoxB I need to have a list of Shape objects but I need to make sure that only Square objects go into BoxA's list and only Circle objects go into BoxB's list. For that list (on each box), I need to have a get() and set() method and also a addShape() and removeShape() methods. Another important thing to know is that for each box created, either BoxA or BoxB, each respectively Shape list is exactly the same. Let's say I create a list of Square's named ls and two BoxA objects named boxA1 and boxA2. No matter what, both boxA1 and boxA2 must have the same ls list. This is my idea: public abstract class Box { // private instance variables public Box() { // constructor stuff } // public instance methods } public class BoxA extends Box { // private instance variables private static List<Shape> list; public BoxA() { // constructor stuff } // public instance methods public static List<Square> getList() { List<Square> aux = new ArrayList<Square>(); for(Square s : list.values()) { aux.add(s.clone()); // I know what I'm doing with this clone, don't worry about it } return aux; } public static void setList(List<Square> newList) { list = new ArrayList<Square>(newList); } public static void addShape(Square s) { list.add(s); } public static void removeShape(Square s) { list.remove(list.indexOf(s)); } } As the list needs to be the same for that type of object, I declared as static and all methods that work with that list are also static. Now, for BoxB the class would be almost the same regarding the list stuff. I would only replace Square by Triangle and the problem was solved. So, for each BoxA object created, the list would be only one and the same for each BoxB object created, but a different type of list of course. So, what's my problem you ask? Well, I don't like the code... The getList(), setList(), addShape() and removeShape() methods are basically repeated for BoxA and BoxB, only the type of the objects that the list will hold is different. I can't think of way to do it in the super class Box instead. Doing it statically too, using Shape instead of Square and Triangle, wouldn't work because the list would be only one and I need it to be only one but for each sub class of Box. How could I do this differently and better? P.S: I could not describe my real example because I don't know the correct words in English for the stuff I'm doing, so I just used a box and shapes example, but it's basically the same.

• bottom uicomponent does not receive mouse events

- by firemonkey
HI, I am sure this is very basic, however I am not able to find the solution. I have a base ShapeContainer(UIComponent). I add a uicomponent which has mouse down listener to ShapeContainer. the listener works great. When I add a simple sprite(draw square) on the ShapeContainer, The listener does not work any more. In the code, if I comment below lines, The event listener works fine. var square:Sprite = new Sprite(); square.graphics.lineStyle(4,0x00FF00); square.graphics.drawRect(0,0,20,20); square.mouseEnabled=false; shapeContainer.addChildAt(square,1); I have tried few things like, mouseenabled=false on top sprite. also tried to add addChildAt but non of them did any help. How can I draw a shape and also have the event listener work. enter code here protected function application1_creationCompleteHandler(event:FlexEvent):void { var shapeContainer:UIComponent = new UIComponent(); shapeContainer.x=100; shapeContainer.y=100; shapeContainer.width=200; shapeContainer.height=200; rawChildren.addChild(shapeContainer); var EventListenerShape:UIComponent = new UIComponent(); EventListenerShape.x=100; EventListenerShape.y=100; EventListenerShape.width=200;a EventListenerShape.height=200; EventListenerShape.graphics.clear(); EventListenerShape.graphics.beginFill(0xf1f1f1, 0.1); EventListenerShape.graphics.drawRoundRect(0, 0, 200, 200, 10, 10); EventListenerShape.alpha = 0; EventListenerShape.graphics.endFill(); EventListenerShape.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, mouseDownfunc); shapeContainer.addChild(EventListenerShape); var square:Sprite = new Sprite(); square.graphics.lineStyle(4,0x00FF00); square.graphics.drawRect(0,0,20,20); square.mouseEnabled=false; shapeContainer.addChildAt(square,1); } private function mouseDownfunc(e:MouseEvent){ trace("mouse Down **"); } </mx:Script> <mx:Canvas id="uic" width="100%" height="100%" backgroundColor="0xFFFFFF"> </mx:Canvas>

• Codeigniter Image Library Cropping an Image with 2 sets of coordinates to make square anywhere?

- by chris
Spending time reading through the docs, and searching for examples. I understand cropping an image from top 0, and left 0 is pretty straight forward. However. I would like to pass 2 sets of coordinates, a starting point and an ending point. Four Points, a Square that is defined anywhere. However from the examples I am finding, and from what I gather the rendition is not going to let me do this. codeigniter so I am seeking confirmation on this thought, is it true that I can only provide end points from 0, and it crops a square based on said end points or can I actually specify an x start, an x end, and similar for y? Or is there some other technique I can use within codeigniter that will allow me to pass for coordinates for starting and ending points?

• Does the '#' modifier for cropping images in Paperclip work only for square images?

- by user3451384
It is very well documented that you can create square thumbnails with center cropping with Paperclip (4) and Rails (4). I would like to have an image of very specific dimensions (e.g. 200x100) and if input an image of let's say 800x200 it is first resized to 400x100 and then the width (400) is cropped down to 200 pixel from the center (i.e. 100px cut from the right and 100 px cut from the left). I tried with 200x100# and it does not appear to work (i.e. the '#' has no effect). I have found that I could adapt other solutions such as this, but I was wondering if '#' is supposed to work only for cropping to square images, or is a Paperclip bug or I am doing something wrong...

• KnockoutJS 2.3.0 - Uncaught Error: You cannot apply bindings multiple times to the same element.

Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/Aligned/archive/2013/07/25/knockoutjs-2.3.0---uncaught-error-you-cannot-apply-bindings-multiple.aspxI upgrade KnockoutJs through Nuget and started getting the error ‘Uncaught Error: You cannot apply bindings multiple times to the same element.’ when I used applyBindings after the main page load. I had some dynamically added DOM elements and re-applying bindings worked before. It always seemed like a workaround/hack, but now Knockout is telling me that I shouldn’t do it. The quick way to fix this is to use ko.cleanNode($(‘#id’) and this works. A different/possibly better way, as suggested by x0n might be to use templates and Knockout’s template binding (). Thanks again to the StackOverflow community for quickly providing me with the solution. Check out my question for all the details.

• How do you handle increasingly long compile times when working with templates?

- by Ghita
I use Visual Studio 2012 and he have cases where we added templates parameters to a class "just" in order to introduce a "seam point" so that in unit-test we can replace those parts with mock objects. How do you usually introduce seam points in C++: using interfaces and/or mixing based on some criteria with implicit interfaces by using templates parameters also ? One reason to ask this is also because when compiling sometimes a single C++ file (that includes templates files, that could also include other templates) results in an object file being generated that takes in the order of around 5-10 seconds on a developer machine. VS compiler is also not particularly fast on compiling templates as far as I understand, and because of the templates inclusion model (you practically include the definition of the template in every file that uses it indirectly and possibly re-instantiate that template every time you modify something that has nothing to do with that template) you could have problems with compile times (when doing incremental compiling). What are your ways of handling incremental(and not only) compile time when working with templates (besides a better/faster compiler :-)).

• How to log frame times in an existing OpenGL game? [on hold]

- by J Collins
I have been using FRAPS for some time to benchmark instantaneous frame rates in an OpenGL game for which I am creating maps. Until recently it had been quite reliable. Now however, the bench marking shortcut has been unresponsive and I can't explain why. Ideally I could have a logging system automatically start logging whenever the game had focus, but can't find a good tool to do so. So option a) find out how to make FRAPS reliable again or b) find a new tool. Could one of you kind folks help me? Edit: Concise questions Is there a widely recognised tool to log frame drawing times and rates for compiled applications? If the answer is universally the FRAPs tool, are there any clear cases in which logging will not or should not be expected to work?

• What is the Name of this Type of Screw? (from for HP quick deploy rail kit in a square hole Rack)

- by kockiren
I need the name of the screw for the HP quick deploy rail kit. The screw clicks into the square holes of the rack. It is a Gen4 Rail kit but the screw is like the Gen8 Rail kit ones. I called HP support, but they couldn't really help me. Unfortunately the rack manual does not name this screw either. After googling a while, I found the compatible "Thumb Style Rack Screws". It would do the job but isn't exactly what I am looking for. So, what is the name of the pictured screw.

• C++ Implicit Conversion Operators

- by Imbue
I'm trying to find a nice inheritance solution in C++. I have a Rectangle class and a Square class. The Square class can't publicly inherit from Rectangle, because it cannot completely fulfill the rectangle's requirements. For example, a Rectangle can have it's width and height each set separately, and this of course is impossible with a Square. So, my dilemma. Square obviously will share a lot of code with Rectangle; they are quite similar. For examlpe, if I have a function like: bool IsPointInRectangle(const Rectangle& rect); it should work for a square too. In fact, I have a ton of such functions. So in making my Square class, I figured I would use private inheritance with a publicly accessible Rectangle conversion operator. So my square class looks like: class Square : private Rectangle { public: operator const Rectangle&() const; }; However, when I try to pass a Square to the IsPointInRectangle function, my compiler just complains that "Rectangle is an inaccessible base" in that context. I expect it to notice the Rectangle operator and use that instead. Is what I'm trying to do even possible? If this can't work I'm probably going to refactor part of Rectangle into MutableRectangle class. Thanks.

• C#/.NET Little Pitfalls: The Dangers of Casting Boxed Values

- by James Michael Hare
Starting a new series to parallel the Little Wonders series. In this series, I will examine some of the small pitfalls that can occasionally trip up developers. Introduction: Of Casts and Conversions What happens when we try to assign from an int and a double and vice-versa? 1: double pi = 3.14; 2: int theAnswer = 42; 3: 4: // implicit widening conversion, compiles! 5: double doubleAnswer = theAnswer; 6: 7: // implicit narrowing conversion, compiler error! 8: int intPi = pi; As you can see from the comments above, a conversion from a value type where there is no potential data loss is can be done with an implicit conversion. However, when converting from one value type to another may result in a loss of data, you must make the conversion explicit so the compiler knows you accept this risk. That is why the conversion from double to int will not compile with an implicit conversion, we can make the conversion explicit by adding a cast: 1: // explicit narrowing conversion using a cast, compiler 2: // succeeds, but results may have data loss: 3: int intPi = (int)pi; So for value types, the conversions (implicit and explicit) both convert the original value to a new value of the given type. With widening and narrowing references, however, this is not the case. Converting reference types is a bit different from converting value types. First of all when you perform a widening or narrowing you don’t really convert the instance of the object, you just convert the reference itself to the wider or narrower reference type, but both the original and new reference type both refer back to the same object. Secondly, widening and narrowing for reference types refers the going down and up the class hierarchy instead of referring to precision as in value types. That is, a narrowing conversion for a reference type means you are going down the class hierarchy (for example from Shape to Square) whereas a widening conversion means you are going up the class hierarchy (from Square to Shape). 1: var square = new Square(); 2: 3: // implicitly convers because all squares are shapes 4: // (that is, all subclasses can be referenced by a superclass reference) 5: Shape myShape = square; 6: 7: // implicit conversion not possible, not all shapes are squares! 8: // (that is, not all superclasses can be referenced by a subclass reference) 9: Square mySquare = (Square) myShape; So we had to cast the Shape back to Square because at that point the compiler has no way of knowing until runtime whether the Shape in question is truly a Square. But, because the compiler knows that it’s possible for a Shape to be a Square, it will compile. However, if the object referenced by myShape is not truly a Square at runtime, you will get an invalid cast exception. Of course, there are other forms of conversions as well such as user-specified conversions and helper class conversions which are beyond the scope of this post. The main thing we want to focus on is this seemingly innocuous casting method of widening and narrowing conversions that we come to depend on every day and, in some cases, can bite us if we don’t fully understand what is going on! The Pitfall: Conversions on Boxed Value Types Can Fail What if you saw the following code and – knowing nothing else – you were asked if it was legal or not, what would you think: 1: // assuming x is defined above this and this 2: // assignment is syntactically legal. 3: x = 3.14; 4: 5: // convert 3.14 to int. 6: int truncated = (int)x; You may think that since x is obviously a double (can’t be a float) because 3.14 is a double literal, but this is inaccurate. Our x could also be dynamic and this would work as well, or there could be user-defined conversions in play. But there is another, even simpler option that can often bite us: what if x is object? 1: object x; 2: 3: x = 3.14; 4: 5: int truncated = (int) x; On the surface, this seems fine. We have a double and we place it into an object which can be done implicitly through boxing (no cast) because all types inherit from object. Then we cast it to int. This theoretically should be possible because we know we can explicitly convert a double to an int through a conversion process which involves truncation. But here’s the pitfall: when casting an object to another type, we are casting a reference type, not a value type! This means that it will attempt to see at runtime if the value boxed and referred to by x is of type int or derived from type int. Since it obviously isn’t (it’s a double after all) we get an invalid cast exception! Now, you may say this looks awfully contrived, but in truth we can run into this a lot if we’re not careful. Consider using an IDataReader to read from a database, and then attempting to select a result row of a particular column type: 1: using (var connection = new SqlConnection("some connection string")) 2: using (var command = new SqlCommand("select * from employee", connection)) 3: using (var reader = command.ExecuteReader()) 4: { 5: while (reader.Read()) 6: { 7: // if the salary is not an int32 in the SQL database, this is an error! 8: // doesn't matter if short, long, double, float, reader [] returns object! 9: total += (int) reader["annual_salary"]; 10: } 11: } Notice that since the reader indexer returns object, if we attempt to convert using a cast to a type, we have to make darn sure we use the true, actual type or this will fail! If the SQL database column is a double, float, short, etc this will fail at runtime with an invalid cast exception because it attempts to convert the object reference! So, how do you get around this? There are two ways, you could first cast the object to its actual type (double), and then do a narrowing cast to on the value to int. Or you could use a helper class like Convert which analyzes the actual run-time type and will perform a conversion as long as the type implements IConvertible. 1: object x; 2: 3: x = 3.14; 4: 5: // if you want to cast, must cast out of object to double, then 6: // cast convert. 7: int truncated = (int)(double) x; 8: 9: // or you can call a helper class like Convert which examines runtime 10: // type of the value being converted 11: int anotherTruncated = Convert.ToInt32(x); Summary You should always be careful when performing a conversion cast from values boxed in object that you are actually casting to the true type (or a sub-type). Since casting from object is a widening of the reference, be careful that you either know the exact, explicit type you expect to be held in the object, or instead avoid the cast and use a helper class to perform a safe conversion to the type you desire. • Params order in Foo.new(params[:foo]), need one before the other (Rails)

- by Jeena
I have a problem which I don't know how to fix. It has to do with the unsorted params hash. I have a object Reservation which has a virtual time= attribute and a virtual eating_session= attribute when I set the time= I also want to validate it via an external server request. I do that with help of the method times() which makes a lookup on a other server and saves all possible times in the @times variable. The problem now is that the method times() needs the eating_session attribute to find out which times are valid, but rails sometimes calls the times= method first, before there is any eating_session in the Reservation object when I just do @reservation = Reservation.new(params[:reservation]) class ReservationsController < ApplicationController def new @reservation = Reservation.new(params[:reservation]) # ... end end class Reservation < ActiveRecord::Base include SoapClient attr_accessor :date, :time belongs_to :eating_session def time=(time) @time = times.find { |t| t[:time] == time } end def times return @times if defined? @times @times = [] response = call_soap :search_availability { # eating_session is sometimes nil :session_id => eating_session.code, # <- HERE IS THE PROBLEM :dining_date => date } response[:result].each do |result| @times << { :time => "#{DateTime.parse(result[:time]).strftime("%H:%M")}", :correlation_data => result[:correlation_data] } end @times end end I have no idea how to fix this, any help is apriciated.

• How do I change the canvas size of a PNG with ImageMagick (GraphicsMagick)? (How to pad with transparency?)

- by Pistos
Alternatively: How do I take a non-square PNG and "fill out" the "rest" of the image with transparency so that the resulting square image has the original image centered in the square? ULTIMATELY, what I want is to take any image of any GM-supported format of any size, and create a scaled-down PNG (say, 40 pixels maximum for either dimension), with aspect ratio maintained, transparency-padded for non-square original images, AND with an already-prepared 40x40 PNG transparency mask applied. I already know how to scale down and keep aspect ratio; I already have the command for applying my composite. My only missing piece is square-alizing non-square images (padding with transparency). Single command preferred; multi-command chain acceptable. (edit) Extra info: Here's the composite command I'm using: gm composite -compose copyopacity mask.png source-and-target.png source-and-target.png where mask.png has white pixels for what I want to keep of source-and-target.png and transparent pixels for what I want to remove (and become transparent) of source-and-target.png.

• Is there a Pair-Wise PostHoc Comparisons for the Chi-Square Test in R?

- by Tal Galili
Hi all, I am wondering if there exists in R a package/function to perform the: "Post Hoc Pair-Wise Comparisons for the Chi-Square Test of Homogeneity of Proportions" (or an equivalent of it) Which is described here: http://epm.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/53/4/951 My situation is of just making a chi test, on a 2 by X matrix. I found a difference, but I want to know which of the columns is "responsible" for the difference. Thanks, Tal
