  • UIImagePickerController Memory Leak

    - by Watson
    I am seeing a huge memory leak when using UIImagePickerController in my iPhone app. I am using standard code from the apple documents to implement the control: UIImagePickerController* imagePickerController = [[UIImagePickerController alloc] init]; imagePickerController.delegate = self; if ([UIImagePickerController isSourceTypeAvailable:UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypeCamera]) { switch (buttonIndex) { case 0: imagePickerController.sourceType = UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypeCamera; [self presentModalViewController:imagePickerController animated:YES]; break; case 1: imagePickerController.sourceType = UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypePhotoLibrary; [self presentModalViewController:imagePickerController animated:YES]; break; default: break; } } And for the cancel: -(void) imagePickerControllerDidCancel:(UIImagePickerController *)picker { [[picker parentViewController] dismissModalViewControllerAnimated: YES]; [picker release]; } The didFinishPickingMediaWithInfo callback is just as stanard, although I do not even have to pick anything to cause the leak. Here is what I see in instruments when all I do is open the UIImagePickerController, pick photo library, and press cancel, repeatedly. As you can see the memory keeps growing, and eventually this causes my iPhone app to slow down tremendously. As you can see I opened the image picker 24 times, and each time it malloc'd 128kb which was never released. Basically 3mb out of my total 6mb is never released. This memory stays leaked no matter what I do. Even after navigating away from the current controller, is remains the same. I have also implemented the picker control as a singleton with the same results. Here is what I see when I drill down into those two lines: Any help here would be greatly appreciated! Again, I do not even have to choose an image. All I do is present the controller, and press cancel. Update 1 I downloaded and ran apple's example of using the UIIMagePickerController and I see the same leak happening there when running instruments (both in simulator and on the phone). http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#samplecode/PhotoPicker/Introduction/Intro.html%23//apple_ref/doc/uid/DTS40010196 All you have to do is hit the photo library button and hit cancel over and over, you'll see the memory keep growing. Any ideas? Update 2 I only see this problem when viewing the photo library. I can choose take photo, and open and close that one over and over, without a leak.

  • Why does Android Account & Sync reboot when trying to find my settings activity?

    - by mobibob
    I have an activity that I can declare as Launcher category and it launches just fine from the home screen. However, when I try to hook-up the same activity into my SyncAdapter's settings activity and open it from the Accounts & Sync page - MySyncAdapter - (touch account listing) it aborts with a system fatal error (reboots phone). Meanwhile, my SyncAdapter is working other respects. • Gathering Staff anyone interested?

    - by kasene
    Thread Title - Gathering Staff Rush-Soft Game Design is currently looking for staff of a moderate skill level. Team Name - RushSoft Game Design Project Name - N/A We are gathering staff so that we can begin working on a new game. Target Aim - Freeware / Free Version - Paid Version With our first project our aim is to simply get our name out there. Generally we will be targeting a freeware distribution platform or a Free and Paid version. Compensation - Prehaps in the future but don't rely on it If in the future we start developing a game we intend to make any sort of sizable profit from then yes, there will be compensation however currently our low, low funding comes from generous donations. Any money that we make for now will go to the teams funding for things like engine licenses and company registration. Technology - C/C++ RSETech Our primary functional language will be C/C++ as most games are. We will be using a custom built library built on Direct3D called RSETech or RushSoft Engine Technology. Currently its is fully capable of being used for developing a game. The final version is made up of almost entirely C (No C++ or OOP). There is a C++ version currently in the works. Programming: - Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 / 2010 2D Art - Photoshop CS2 - GIMP Talent Needed - We currently are in need of x2 Programmers - With understanding of the following C/C ++ and game programming aspects: -If/Else Conditions -Functions/Methods -Arrays -Pointers (You don't need to fully understand these. • DropDownList not updating value

    - by annelie
    Hello, I posted a question earlier but have another problem after making those changes. The previous thread can be found here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2700028/binding-a-dropdownlist-inside-a-detailsview Basically, I've got a dropdownlist that's dynamically populated with a list of regions. It selects the correct region when viewing the dropdown, but when I try to edit it changes the value to null. I think it might be because it doesn't know which field to update. Previously, when the dropdown list was hardcoded, I had SelectedValue='<%# Bind("region_id")%' set on the dropdown list, and when I updated it worked fine. However, I had to move the setting of the selected value into the code behind and now it just gets set to null every time I update. Here's the aspx code: <asp:DetailsView id="DetailsView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateRows="false" DataSourceID="myMySqlDataSrc" DataKeyNames="id" AutoGenerateDeleteButton="True" AutoGenerateEditButton="True" AutoGenerateInsertButton="False" OnDataBound="DetailsView1_DataBound" > <Fields> <snip> <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Region"> <ItemTemplate><%# Eval("region_name") %></ItemTemplate> <EditItemTemplate> <asp:DropDownList ID="RegionDropdownList" runat="server"> </asp:DropDownList> </EditItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> </Fields> </asp:DetailsView> And here's the code behind: protected void DetailsView1_DataBound(object sender, EventArgs e) { ArrayList regionsList = BPBusiness.getRegions(); if (DetailsView1.CurrentMode == DetailsViewMode.Edit) { DropDownList ddlRegions = (DropDownList)DetailsView1.FindControl("RegionDropdownList"); if (ddlRegions != null) { ddlRegions.DataSource = regionsList; ddlRegions.DataValueField = "Value"; ddlRegions.DataTextField = "Text"; ddlRegions.DataBind(); if (ddlRegions.Items.Contains(ddlRegions.Items.FindByValue(objBusiness.iRegionID.ToString()))) { ddlRegions.SelectedIndex = ddlRegions.Items.IndexOf(ddlRegions.Items.FindByValue(objBusiness.iRegionID.ToString())); } } } } EDIT: The database is MySql, and the update statement looks like this: myMySqlDataSrc.UpdateCommand = "UPDATE myTable SET business_name = ?, addr_line_1 = ?, addr_line_2 = ?, addr_line_3 = ?, postcode = ?, county = ?, town_city = ?, tl_url = ?, customer_id = ?, region_id = ?, description = ?, approval_status = ?, tl_user_name = ?, phone = ?, uploaders_own = ? WHERE id = ?"; Thanks, Annelie

  • Suggestions for designing large-scale Java webapp from the group up

    - by Chris Thompson
    Hi all, I'm about to start developing a large-scale system and I'm struggling with which direction to proceed. I've done plenty of Java web apps before and I have plenty of experience with servlet containers and GWT and some experience with Spring. The problem is most of my webapps have been thrown together just to be a proof of concept and what I'm struggling with is what set of frameworks to use. I need to have both a browser based application as well as a web service designed to support access from mobile devices (Android and iPhone for now). Ideally, I'd like to design this system in such a way that I don't end up rewriting all of my servlets for each client (browser and phone) although I don't mind having some small checks in there to properly format the data. In addition, although I'm the only developer now, that won't necessarily be the case down the road and I'd like to design something that scales well both with regards to traffic and number of developers (isn't just a nightmare to maintain). So where I am now is planning on using GWT to design the browser-based interface but I'm struggling with how to reuse that code with to present the interface (most likely xml) for the mobile devices. Using GWT RPC would, I think, make it relatively easy to do all of the AJAX in the browser, but might make generating xml for the mobile phones difficult. In addition, I like the idea of using something like Hibernate for persistence and Spring Security to secure the whole thing. Again, I'm not sure how well those will cooperate with GWT (I think Hibernate should be fine...) There's obviously a lot more to this than I've presented here, but I've tried to give you the 5-minute overview. I'm a bit stumped and was wondering if anybody in the community had any experience starting from this place. Does what I'm trying to do make sense? Is it realistic? I have no doubt I can make all of these frameworks speak the same language, I'm just wondering if it's worth my time to fight with them. Also, am I missing a framework that would be really beneficial? Thanks in advance and sorry for the relatively broad question... Chris

  • Problem with ColdFusion communicating with MySQL database

    - by Greg
    Hi, I have been working to migrate a non-profit website from a local server (running Windows XP) to a GoDaddy hosting account (running Linux). Most of the pages are written in ColdFusion. Things have gone smoothly, up until this point. There is a flash form within the site (see this page: http://www.preservenet.cornell.edu/employ/submitjob.cfm) which, when completed, takes the visitor to this page: submitjobaction.cfm . I'm not quite sure what to make of this error, since I copied exactly what had been in the old MySQL database, and the .cfm files are exactly as they had been when they worked on the old server. Am I missing something? Below is the code from the database that the error seems to be referring to. When I change "Positionlat" to some default value in the database as it suggests in the error, it says that another field needs a default value, and it's a neverending chain of errors as I try to correct it. This is probably a stupid error that I'm missing, but I've been working at it for days and can't find what I'm missing. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks! -Greg DROP TABLE IF EXISTS employopp; CREATE TABLE employopp ( POSTID int(10) NOT NULL auto_increment, USERID varchar(10) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, STATUS varchar(10) collate latin1_general_ci NOT NULL default 'ACTIVE', TYPE varchar(50) collate latin1_general_ci default 'professional', JOBTITLE varchar(70) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, NUMBER varchar(30) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, SALARY varchar(40) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, ORGNAME varchar(70) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, DEPTNAME varchar(70) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, ORGDETAILS mediumtext character set utf8 collate utf8_unicode_ci, ORGWEBSITE varchar(200) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, ADDRESS varchar(60) collate latin1_general_ci default 'none given', ADDRESS2 varchar(60) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, CITY varchar(30) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, STATE varchar(30) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, COUNTRY varchar(3) collate latin1_general_ci default 'USA', POSTALCODE varchar(10) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, EMAIL varchar(75) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, NOMAIL varchar(5) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, PHONE varchar(20) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, FAX varchar(20) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, WEBSITE varchar(200) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, POSTDATE varchar(10) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, POSTUNTIL varchar(20) collate latin1_general_ci default 'select date', POSTUNTILFILLED varchar(20) collate latin1_general_ci NOT NULL default 'until filled', texteHTML mediumtext character set utf8 collate utf8_unicode_ci, HOWTOAPPLY mediumtext character set utf8 collate utf8_unicode_ci, CONFIRSTNM varchar(30) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, CONLASTNM varchar(60) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, POSITIONCITY varchar(30) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, POSITIONSTATE varchar(30) collate latin1_general_ci default NULL, POSITIONCOUNTRY varchar(3) collate latin1_general_ci default 'USA', POSITIONLAT varchar(50) collate latin1_general_ci NOT NULL, POSITIONLNG varchar(50) collate latin1_general_ci NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (POSTID) ) ENGINE=MyISAM AUTO_INCREMENT=2007 DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 COLLATE=latin1_general_ci;

  • More efficient way of updating UI from Service than intents?

    - by Donal Rafferty
    I currently have a Service in Android that is a sample VOIP client so it listens out for SIP messages and if it recieves one it starts up an Activity screen with UI components. Then the following SIP messages determine what the Activity is to display on the screen. For example if its an incoming call it will display Answer or Reject or an outgoing call it will show a dialling screen. At the minute I use Intents to let the Activity know what state it should display. An example is as follows: Intent i = new Intent(); i.setAction(SIPEngine.SIP_TRYING_INTENT); i.putExtra("com.net.INCOMING", true); sendBroadcast(i); Intent x = new Intent(); x.setAction(CallManager.SIP_INCOMING_CALL_INTENT); sendBroadcast(x); Log.d("INTENT SENT", "INTENT SENT INCOMING CALL AFTER PROCESSINVITE"); So the activity will have a broadcast reciever registered for these intents and will switch its state according to the last intent it received. Sample code as follows: SipCallListener = new BroadcastReceiver(){ @Override public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) { String action = intent.getAction(); if(SIPEngine.SIP_RINGING_INTENT.equals(action)){ Log.d("cda ", "Got RINGING action SIPENGINE"); ringingSetup(); } if(CallManager.SIP_INCOMING_CALL_INTENT.equals(action)){ Log.d("cda ", "Got PHONE RINGING action"); incomingCallSetup(); } } }; IntentFilter filter = new IntentFilter(CallManager.SIP_INCOMING_CALL_INTENT); filter.addAction(CallManager.SIP_RINGING_CALL_INTENT); registerReceiver(SipCallListener, filter); This works however it seems like it is not very efficient, the Intents will get broadcast system wide and Intents having to fire for different states seems like it could become inefficient the more I have to include as well as adding complexity. So I was wondering if there is a different more efficient and cleaner way to do this? Is there a way to keep Intents broadcasting only inside an application? Would callbacks be a better idea? If so why and in what way should they be implemented?

  • Volunteer for a potential employer?

    - by EoRaptor013
    I've been looking for work since March, and haven't had much luck. Recently, however, I interviewed with a small company near my home for a C#, .NET, SQL development position. I hit it off very well with the hiring manager during the phone screen, and even more so during the face to face. Unfortunately, I failed the practical test: wiring up a web form, creating a couple of SQL stored procedures, saving new data with validation, and creating a minimal search screen. I knew what I was doing, but I was too slow to meet their standards as all the work needed to be done within an hour. Nevertheless, I really liked the place, the environment, the people who I would have been working with, and the boss. (I gave the company an 11 on Joel's 12 point scale.) So, the obvious next step was to scrape the rust off. I've been trying to create little projects for myself, but I don't know that I've been effective in getting any faster. What with all that goes into creating a project, I'm not heads-down coding as much as I think I need. Now, with all that introduction, here's the question. I have been thinking about calling the hiring manager at that place, and asking him to let me volunteer for three or four weeks, with no strings attached. I think it would benefit me, and wouldn't cost him anything (as long as I didn't slow the existing people down!). At the end of that period, he might, or might not, be inclined to hire me, but even if not, I would have had as much as 160 hours of in the trenches development. Maybe not all shiny, but no more rust, I would think. Does this plan make any sense at all? I certainly don't want to sound desperate (although, I'm not far from being there), and I very much need the tuneup, lube, and change the oil. What's the downside, if any, to me doing this? Do any of you see red flags going up—either from the prerspective of the hiring manager, or from the perspective of a developer?

  • Start a short video when an incoming call is detected, first case using the emulator.

    - by Emanuel
    I want to be able to start a short video on an incoming phone call. The video will loop until the call is answered. I've loaded the video onto the emulator sdcard then created the appropriate level avd with a path to the sdcard.iso file on disk. Since I'm running on a Mac OS x snow leopard I am able to confirm the contents of the sdcard. All testing has be done on the Android emulator. In a separate project TestVideo I created an activity that just launches the video from the sdcard. That works as expected. Then I created another project TestIncoming that creates an activity that creates a PhoneStateListener that overrides the onCallStateChanged(int state, String incomingNumber) method. In the onCallStateChanged() method I check if state == TelephonyManager.CALL_STATE_RINGING. If true I create an Intent that starts the video. I'm actually using the code from the TestVideo project above. Here is the code snippet. PhoneStateListener callStateListener = new PhoneStateListener() { @Override public void onCallStateChanged(int state, String incomingNumber) { if(state == TelelphonyManager.CALL_STATE_RINGING) { Intent launchVideo = new Intent(MyActivity.this, LaunchVideo.class); startActivity(launchVideo); } } }; The PhoneStateListener is added to the TelephonyManager.listen() method like so, telephonyManager.listen(callStateListener, PhoneStateListener.LISTEN_CALL_STATE); Here is the part I'm unclear on, the manifest. What I've tried is the following: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" package="com.example.incomingdemo" android:versionCode="1" android:versionName="1.0"> <application android:icon="@drawable/icon" android:label="@string/app_name"> <activity android:name=".IncomingVideoDemo" android:label="@string/app_name"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.ANSWER" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" /> </intent-filter> </activity> <activity android:name=".LaunchVideo" android:label="LaunchVideo"> </activity> </application> <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="2" /> <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.READ_PHONE_STATE"/> </manifest> I've run the debugger after setting breakpoints in the IncomingVideoDemo activity where the PhoneStateListener is created and none of the breakpoints are hit. Any insights into solving this problem is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • iPhone App not saving values to .plist file

    - by Trent
    Hey everyone. I am working on an app that displays a modal the first time the consumer uses it. I have a .plist file that will store the information I request once the Save button is pressed. I can read from the .plist file fine and when I run my save method it SEEMS to work fine but the .plist file is not updating. I'm not so sure of the problem here. I show the modal like this. - (void) getConsumerInfo { NSString *filePath = [[[NSBundle mainBundle] resourcePath] stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"consumer.plist"]; NSMutableDictionary *plistConsumerInfo = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] initWithContentsOfFile:filePath]; NSString *hasAppeared = [plistConsumerInfo objectForKey:@"HasAppeared"]; if(hasAppeared != kHasAppeared) { ConsumerInfoViewController *tmpConsumerInfoVC = [[ConsumerInfoViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"ConsumerInfoView" bundle:nil]; self.consumerInfoViewController = tmpConsumerInfoVC; [self presentModalViewController:consumerInfoViewController animated:YES]; [tmpConsumerInfoVC release]; } } This is called by the viewDidLoad method in the first view phone when the app is started. Within the consumerInfoViewController I have textfields that have data entered and when the Save button is pressed it calls this method. - (IBAction)saveConsumerInfo:(id)sender { NSString *filePath = [[[NSBundle mainBundle] resourcePath] stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"consumer.plist"]; NSMutableDictionary *plistDict = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] initWithContentsOfFile:filePath]; NSString *tmpDiversName = txtDiversName.text; NSString *tmpLicenseType = txtLicenseType.text; NSString *tmpLicenseNum = txtLicenseNumber.text; NSString *tmpHasAppeared = @"1"; NSString *tmpNumJumps = @"3"; [plistDict setValue:[[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"%@", tmpDiversName] forKey:@"ConsumerName"]; [plistDict setValue:[[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"%@", tmpLicenseType] forKey:@"LicenseType"]; [plistDict setValue:[[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"%@", tmpLicenseNum] forKey:@"LicenseNumb"]; [plistDict setValue:[[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"%@", tmpNumJumps] forKey:@"NumJumps"]; [plistDict setValue:[[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"%d", tmpHasAppeared] forKey:@"Show"]; [plistDict writeToFile:filePath atomically: YES]; NSLog([[NSString alloc] initWithContentsOfFile:filePath]); [self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES]; } This all runs fine with no hiccups but the file is never updated. I would like it to update so I can use this information throughout the app and update the flag so it will not show the view again once the data is entered. Please let me know if there is anymore information you need. Thanks in advance!

  • Android - MapView contained within a Listview

    Hello, Currently I am trying to place a MapView within a ListView. Has anyone had any success with this? Is it even possible? Here is my code: ListView myList = (ListView) findViewById(android.R.id.list); List<Map<String, Object>> groupData = new ArrayList<Map<String, Object>>(); Map<String, Object> curGroupMap = new HashMap<String, Object>(); groupData.add(curGroupMap); curGroupMap.put("ICON", R.drawable.back_icon); curGroupMap.put("NAME","Go Back"); curGroupMap.put("VALUE","By clicking here"); Iterator it = data.entrySet().iterator(); while (it.hasNext()) { //Get the key name and value for it Map.Entry pair = (Map.Entry)it.next(); String keyName = (String) pair.getKey(); String value = pair.getValue().toString(); if (value != null) { //Add the parents -- aka main categories curGroupMap = new HashMap<String, Object>(); groupData.add(curGroupMap); //Push the correct Icon if (keyName.equalsIgnoreCase("Phone")) curGroupMap.put("ICON", R.drawable.phone_icon); else if (keyName.equalsIgnoreCase("Housing")) curGroupMap.put("ICON", R.drawable.house_icon); else if (keyName.equalsIgnoreCase("Website")) curGroupMap.put("ICON", R.drawable.web_icon); else if (keyName.equalsIgnoreCase("Area Snapshot")) curGroupMap.put("ICON", R.drawable.camera_icon); else if (keyName.equalsIgnoreCase("Overview")) curGroupMap.put("ICON", R.drawable.overview_icon); else if (keyName.equalsIgnoreCase("Location")) curGroupMap.put("ICON", R.drawable.map_icon); else curGroupMap.put("ICON", R.drawable.icon); //Pop on the Name and Value curGroupMap.put("NAME", keyName); curGroupMap.put("VALUE", value); } } curGroupMap = new HashMap<String, Object>(); groupData.add(curGroupMap); curGroupMap.put("ICON", R.drawable.back_icon); curGroupMap.put("NAME","Go Back"); curGroupMap.put("VALUE","By clicking here"); //Set up adapter mAdapter = new SimpleAdapter( mContext, groupData, R.layout.exp_list_parent, new String[] { "ICON", "NAME", "VALUE" }, new int[] { R.id.photoAlbumImg, R.id.rowText1, R.id.rowText2 } ); myList.setAdapter(mAdapter); //Bind the adapter to the list Thanks in advance for your help!!

  • Trying to populate ListView in Android using objects from Parse

    - by mrwienerdog
    I am pretty darned new to android, and VERY new to Parse. I have created a class, StudentInformation, that includes columns for name, address, phone, etc. I would like to create a listview that contains the names of all students added to the class. How do I do this? I have got it to the point that I can Toast out the objectIDs of all of my entries, but can't figure out how to extract and add just the names to the ListView. Here is a snippet of the code: //Set up the listview studentListView = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.listViewStudents); //Create and populate an ArrayList of objects from parse ParseQuery query = new ParseQuery("StudentInformation"); final ArrayList<Object> studentList = new ArrayList<Object>(); query.findInBackground(new FindCallback() { public void done(List<ParseObject> objects, ParseException e) { if (e == null) { Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), objects.toString(), Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); for(int i = 0;i < objects.size(); i++){ objects.get(i); studentList.add("name".toString()); } } else { Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "Error", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); } } }); //studentList.addAll(Arrays.asList(students)); listAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<Object>(this,android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1,studentList); studentListView.setAdapter(listAdapter); } I have left the toast in where I toatst out the objectIDs in the public void done.... method. Any help would be, as always, greatly appreciated. Should be mentioned (possibly), no errors are thrown, the listview just never gets populated after the toast disappears. Don't know if this will help anyone, but I took a bit from both posts below, and came up with this: //Set up the listview studentList = new ArrayList<String>(); //Create and populate an ArrayList of objects from parse listAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1); studentListView = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.listViewStudents); studentListView.setAdapter(listAdapter); final ParseQuery query = new ParseQuery("StudentInformation"); query.findInBackground(new FindCallback() { public void done(List<ParseObject> objects, ParseException e) { if (e == null) { //Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), objects.toString(), Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); for (int i = 0; i < objects.size(); i++) { Object object = objects.get(i); String name = ((ParseObject) object).getString("name").toString(); listAdapter.add(name); } } else { Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "Error", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); } } });

  • Fread binary file dynamic size string [C]

    - by Blackbinary
    I've been working on this assignment, where I need to read in "records" and write them to a file, and then have the ability to read/find them later. On each run of the program, the user can decide to write a new record, or read an old record (either by Name or #) The file is binary, here is its definition: typedef struct{ char * name; char * address; short addressLength, nameLength; int phoneNumber; }employeeRecord; employeeRecord record; The way the program works, it will store the structure, then the name, then the address. Name and address are dynamically allocated, which is why it is necessary to read the structure first to find the size of the name and address, allocate memory for them, then read them into that memory. For debugging purposes I have two programs at the moment. I have my file writing program, and file reading. My actual problem is this, when I read a file I have written, i read in the structure, print out the phone # to make sure it works (which works fine), and then fread the name (now being able to use record.nameLength which reports the proper value too). Fread however, does not return a usable name, it returns blank. I see two problems, either I haven't written the name to the file correctly, or I haven't read it in correctly. Here is how i write to the file: where fp is the file pointer. record.name is a proper value, so is record.nameLength. Also i am writing the name including the null terminator. (e.g. 'Jack\0') fwrite(&record,sizeof record,1,fp); fwrite(record.name,sizeof(char),record.nameLength,fp); fwrite(record.address,sizeof(char),record.addressLength,fp); And i then close the file. here is how i read the file: fp = fopen("employeeRecord","r"); fread(&record,sizeof record,1,fp); printf("Number: %d\n",record.phoneNumber); char *nameString = malloc(sizeof(char)*record.nameLength); printf("\nName Length: %d",record.nameLength); fread(nameString,sizeof(char),record.nameLength,fp); printf("\nName: %s",nameString); Notice there is some debug stuff in there (name length and number, both of which are correct). So i know the file opened properly, and I can use the name length fine. Why then is my output blank, or a newline, or something like that? (The output is just Name: with nothing after it, and program finishes just fine) Thanks for the help.

  • Suggestions for designing large-scale Java webapp from the ground up

Chris

  • how to make the android app load faster?

    - by Tapan Desai
    I have designed an application for android, in which i am showing a splash screen before the main activity is started but the application takes 5-7 seconds to start on low-end devices. I want to reduce that time to as low as possible. I have been trying to reduce the things to be done in onCreate() but now i cannot remove any thing more from that. I am pasting the code that i have used to show the splash and the code from MainActivity. Please help me in reducing the startup time of the application. Splash.java @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); this.requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE); setContentView(R.layout.activity_splash); txtLoad = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.txtLoading); txtLoad.setText("v1.0"); new Thread() { public void run() { try { sleep(1000); } catch (InterruptedException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } finally { finish(); Intent intent = new Intent(SplashActivity.this,MainActivity.class); startActivity(intent); } } }.start(); } MainActivity.java @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); this.requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE); setContentView(R.layout.activity_main); editType1UserName = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType1UserName); editType1Password = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType1Password); editType2UserName = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType2UserName); editType2Password = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType2Password); editType3UserName = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType3UserName); editType3Password = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType3Password); editType4UserName = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType4UserName); editType4Password = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType4Password); mTxtPhoneNo = (AutoCompleteTextView) findViewById(R.id.mmWhoNo); mTxtPhoneNo.setThreshold(1); editText = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextMessage); spinner1 = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinnerGateway); btnsend = (Button) findViewById(R.id.btnSend); btnContact = (Button) findViewById(R.id.btnContact); btnsend.setOnClickListener((OnClickListener) this); btnContact.setOnClickListener((OnClickListener) this); mPeopleList = new ArrayList<Map<String, String>>(); PopulatePeopleList(); mAdapter = new SimpleAdapter(this, mPeopleList, R.layout.custcontview, new String[] { "Name", "Phone", "Type" }, new int[] { R.id.ccontName, R.id.ccontNo, R.id.ccontType }); mTxtPhoneNo.setAdapter(mAdapter); mTxtPhoneNo.setOnItemClickListener((OnItemClickListener) this); readPerson(); Panel panel; topPanel = panel = (Panel) findViewById(R.id.mytopPanel); panel.setOnPanelListener((OnPanelListener) this); panel.setInterpolator(new BounceInterpolator(Type.OUT)); getLoginDetails(); }

  • A Question about using jython when run a receving socket in python

    - by abusemind
    Hi, I have not a lot of knowledge of python and network programming. Currently I am trying to implement a simple application which can receive a text message sent by the user, fetch some information from the google search api, and return the results via text message to the user. This application will continue to listening to the users messages and reply immediately. How I get the text short message sent by the user? It's a program named fetion from the mobile supplier in China. The client side fetion, just like a instant communication tool, can send/receive messages to/from other people who are using mobile to receive/send SMS. I am using a open source python program that simulates the fetion program. So basically I can use this python program to communate with others who using cell phone via SMS. My core program is based on java, so I need to take this python program into java environment. I am using jython, and now I am available to send messages to users by some lines of java codes. But the real question is the process of receving from users via SMS. In python code, a new thread is created to continuously listen to the user. It should be OK in Python, but when I run the similar process in Jython, the following exception occurs: Exception in thread Thread:Traceback (most recent call last): File "D:\jython2.5.1\Lib\threading.py", line 178, in _Thread__bootstrap self.run() File "<iostream>", line 1389, in run File "<iostream>", line 1207, in receive File "<iostream>", line 1207, in receive File "<iostream>", line 150, in recv File "D:\jython2.5.1\Lib\select.py", line 223, in native_select pobj.register(fd, POLLIN) File "D:\jython2.5.1\Lib\select.py", line 104, in register raise _map_exception(jlx) error: (20000, 'socket must be in non-blocking mode') The line 150 in the python code is as follows: def recv(self,timeout=False): if self.login_type == "HTTP": time.sleep(10) return self.get_offline_msg() pass else: if timeout: infd,outfd,errfd = select([self.__sock,],[],[],timeout)//<---line 150 here else: infd,outfd,errfd = select([self.__sock,],[],[]) if len(infd) != 0: ret = self.__tcp_recv() num = len(ret) d_print(('num',),locals()) if num == 0: return ret if num == 1: return ret[0] for r in ret: self.queue.put(r) d_print(('r',),locals()) if not self.queue.empty(): return self.queue.get() else: return "TimeOut" Because of I am not very familiar with python, especially the socket part, and also new in Jython use, I really need your help or only advice or explanation. Thank you very much!

  • iPhone reachability checking

    - by Sneakyness
    I've found several examples of code to do what I want (check for reachability), but none of it seems to be exact enough to be of use to me. I can't figure out why this doesn't want to play nice. I have the reachability.h/m in my project, I'm doing #import <SystemConfiguration/SystemConfiguration.h> And I have the framework added. I also have: #import "Reachability.h" at the top of the .m in which I'm trying to use the reachability. Reachability* reachability = [Reachability sharedReachability]; [reachability setHostName:@"http://www.google.com"]; // set your host name here NetworkStatus remoteHostStatus = [reachability remoteHostStatus]; if(remoteHostStatus == NotReachable) {NSLog(@"no");} else if (remoteHostStatus == ReachableViaWiFiNetwork) {NSLog(@"wifi"); } else if (remoteHostStatus == ReachableViaCarrierDataNetwork) {NSLog(@"cell"); } This is giving me all sorts of problems. What am I doing wrong? I'm an alright coder, I just have a hard time when it comes time to figure out what needs to be put where to enable what I want to do, regardless if I want to know what I want to do or not. (So frustrating) Update: This is what's going on. This is in my viewcontroller, which I have the #import <SystemConfiguration/SystemConfiguration.h> and #import "Reachability.h" set up with. This is my least favorite part of programming by far. FWIW, we never ended up implementing this in our code. The two features that required internet access (entering the sweepstakes, and buying the dvd), were not main features. Nothing else required internet access. Instead of adding more code, we just set the background of both internet views to a notice telling the users they must be connected to the internet to use this feature. It was in theme with the rest of the application's interface, and was done well/tastefully. They said nothing about it during the approval process, however we did get a personal phone call to verify that we were giving away items that actually pertained to the movie. According to their usually vague agreement, you aren't allowed to have sweepstakes otherwise. I would also think this adheres more strictly to their "only use things if you absolutely need them" ideaology as well. Here's the iTunes link to the application, EvoScanner.

  • What is the best way get and hold property reference by name in c#

    - by Jeff Weber
    I want to know if there is a better way (than what I'm currently doing) to obtain and hold a reference to a property in another object using only the object and property string names. Particularly, is there a better way to do this with the new dynamic functionality of .Net 4.0? Here is what I have right now. I have a "PropertyReference<T>" object that takes an object name and property name in the constructor. An Initialize() method uses reflection to find the object and property and stores the property Getter as an Action<T> and the property Setter as an Func<T>. When I want to actually call the property I do something like this: int x = _propertyReference.Get(); or _propertyReference.Set(2); Here is my PropertyReference<T> code. Please dissect and make suggestions for improvement. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Reflection; using System.Xml; namespace WindowsFormsApplication2 { public class PropertyReference<T> : IPropertyReference { public string ComponentName { get; set; } public string PropertyName { get; set; } public bool IsInitialized { get { return (_action != null && _func != null); } } Action<T> _action; Func<T> _func; public PropertyReference() { } public PropertyReference(string componentName, string propertyName) { ComponentName = componentName; PropertyName = propertyName; } public void Initialize(IEntity e) { Object component = e.GetByName(ComponentName); if (component == null) return; Type t = e.GetByName(ComponentName).GetType(); PropertyInfo pi = t.GetProperty(PropertyName); _action = (T a) => pi.SetValue(component, a, null); _func = () => (T)pi.GetValue(component, null); } public void Reset() { _action = null; _func = null; } public void Set(T value) { _action.Invoke(value); } public T Get() { return _func(); } } } Note: I can't use the "Emit" functionality as I need this code to work on the new Windows Phone 7 and that does not support Emit.

  • The Math of a Jump in a 2D game.

    - by ONi
    I have been all around with this question and I can't find the correct answer! So, behold, the description of my question: I'm working in J2ME, I have my gameloop that do the following: public void run() { Graphics g = this.getGraphics(); while (running) { long diff = System.currentTimeMillis() - lastLoop; lastLoop = System.currentTimeMillis(); input(); this.level.doLogic(); render(g, diff); try { Thread.sleep(10); } catch (InterruptedException e) { stop(e); } } } so it's just a basic gameloop, the doLogic() function calls for all the logic functions of the characters in the scene and render(g, diff) calls the animateChar function of every character on scene, following this, the animChar function in the Character class sets up everything in the screen as this: protected void animChar(long diff) { this.checkGravity(); this.move((int) ((diff * this.dx) / 1000), (int) ((diff * this.dy) / 1000)); if (this.acumFrame > this.framerate) { this.nextFrame(); this.acumFrame = 0; } else { this.acumFrame += diff; } } This ensures me that everything must to move according to the time that the machine takes to go from cycle to cycle (remember it's a phone, not a gaming rig). I'm sure it's not the most efficient way to achieve this behavior so I'm totally open for criticism of my programming skills in the comments, but here my problem: When I make I character jump, what I do is that I put his dy to a negative value, say -200 and I set the boolean jumping to true, that makes the character go up, and then I have this function called checkGravity() that ensure that everything that goes up has to go down, checkGravity also checks for the character being over platforms so I will strip it down a little for the sake of your time: public void checkGravity() { if (this.jumping) { this.jumpSpeed += 10; if (this.jumpSpeed > 0) { this.jumping = false; this.falling = true; } this.dy = this.jumpSpeed; } if (this.falling) { this.jumpSpeed += 10; if (this.jumpSpeed > 200) this.jumpSpeed = 200; this.dy = this.jumpSpeed; if (this.collidesWithPlatform()) { this.falling = false; this.standing = true; this.jumping = false; this.jumpSpeed = 0; this.dy = this.jumpSpeed; } } } So, the problem is, that this function updates the dy regardless of the diff, making the characters fly like Superman in slow machines, and I have no idea how to implement the diff factor so that when a character is jumping, his speed decrement in a proportional way to the game speed. Can anyone help me fix this issue? or give me pointers on how to make a 2D Jump in J2ME the right way. Thank you very much for your time.

  • A scheme for expiring downloaded content?

    - by Chad Johnson
    I am going to offer a web API service that allows users to download and "rent" content for a monthly subscription fee. The API will either be open to everyone or possibly just select parties (not sure yet). Each developer must agree to a license, and they receive a developer key for their person. Each software application will have its own key as well. So then end-users will download the software which will interact with my service's API. Each user will have a key for each application as well (probably using OAuth). Content will be cached on first download and accessible offline via just the third-party application that cached the content. If a user cancels their subscription, I plan on doing the following: Deactivate the user's OAuth key for all applications. Do not allow the user's account to download new content via the API (and subsequently any software that uses the API). Now, the big question is: how do I make content expire if they cancel their subscription? If they cancel, they should not have access to content anymore. Here are ideas I've thought of (some of these are half-solutions, not yet fully fleshed out): Require that applications encrypt downloaded content using the user's OAuth key, making it available to only the application. This will prevent most users from going to the cache directory and just copying and keeping files. Update the user's key once a month, forcing content to re-cache on a monthly basic. Users could then access content for a month after they cancel their subscription. Require applications to "phone home" [to the service] periodically and check whether the user's subscription has terminated. If so, require in the API developer license that applications expire cache. If it is found that applications do not comply, their keys (and possibly keys for all developers) are permanently deactivated as a consequence. One major worry is that some applications may blatantly ignore constraints of the license. Is it generally acceptable to rely on applications abiding by the licensing constraints? Bad idea? Any other ideas? Maybe a way to make content auto-expire after x days? Something else? I'm open to out-of-the-box ideas.

  • ASP.NET ObjectDataSource, change CommandName property of FromView Button

    - by Tone
    I have an ObjectDataSource that I'm using with a FormView, and it works fine, but i want to change one small thing. On the FormView the button that fires the update has the CommandName attribute set to "Update," but I would like to change that attribute to something other than "Update" - when I do change that attribute the update no longer works. The reason I want to do this is I have multiple FormViews on the same page and need to have multiple update buttons. Below is my code: FormView: <asp:FormView ID="fvGeneralInfo" runat="server" DataSourceID="objInstructorDetails" CssClass="Gridview" OnItemCommand="fvGeneralInfo_ItemCommand" DefaultMode="Edit"> <EditItemTemplate> <table> .... <tr> <td style="text-align:right;"> <asp:Label runat="server" ID="lblGeneralInfoMessage" Text="General Info updated successfully" Visible="false" /> </td> <td> <asp:Button runat="server" ID="btnUpdateGeneralInfo" ValidationGroup="UpdateGeneralInfo" Text="Update" CommandName="Update" /> <asp:Button runat="server" ID="btnCancelGeneralInfo" Text="Cancel" CommandName="CancelGeneralInfo" /> </td> </tr> </table> </EditItemTemplate> </asp:FormView> ObjectDataSource: <asp:ObjectDataSource ID="objInstructorDetails" runat="server" TypeName="AIMLibrary.BLL.Instructor" SelectMethod="GetInstructorDetails" InsertMethod="InsertInstructor" UpdateMethod="UpdateInstructor" OnInserting="objInstructorDetails_OnInserting" OnUpdating="objInstructorDetails_OnUpdating" > <SelectParameters> <asp:QueryStringParameter Name="InstructorId" QueryStringField="InstructorId" /> </SelectParameters> <UpdateParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="instructorId" Type="Int32" /> <asp:Parameter Name="firstName" Type="String" DefaultValue="" /> <asp:Parameter Name="middleName" Type="String" DefaultValue="" /> <asp:Parameter Name="lastName" Type="String" DefaultValue="" /> <asp:Parameter Name="phone" Type="String" DefaultValue="" /> <asp:Parameter Name="email" Type="String" DefaultValue="" /> <asp:Parameter Name="addressLine1" Type="String" DefaultValue="" /> <asp:Parameter Name="addressLine2" Type="String" DefaultValue="" /> <asp:Parameter Name="city" Type="String" DefaultValue="" /> <asp:Parameter Name="state" Type="String" DefaultValue="" /> <asp:Parameter Name="zip" Type="String" DefaultValue="" /> <asp:Parameter Name="abcBoardNumber" Type="String" DefaultValue="" /> </UpdateParameters> </asp:ObjectDataSource>
