• Portable scripting language for a multi-server admin?

- by Aaron
Please Note: Portable as in portableapps.com, not the traditional definition. Originally posted on stackoverflow.com, asking here at another user's suggestion. I'm a DBA and sysadmin, mostly for Windows machines running SQL Server. I'm looking for a programming/scripting language for Windows that doesn't require Admin access or an installer, needing no install process other than expanding it into a folder. My intent is to have a language for automation on which I can standardize. Up to this point, I've been using a combination of batch files and Unix shell, using sh.exe from UnxUtils but it's far from a perfect solution. I've evaluated a handful of options, all of them have at least one serious shortcoming or another. I have a strong preference for something open source or dual license, but I'm more interested in finding the right tool than anything else. Not interested that anything that relies on Cygwin or Java, but at this point I'd be fine with something that needs .NET. Requirements: Manageable footprint (1-100 files, under 30 MB installed) Run on Windows XP and Server (2003+) No installer (exe, msi) Works with external pipes, processes, and files Support for MS SQL Server or ODBC connections Bonus Points: Open Source FFI for calling functions in native DLLs GUI support (native or gtk, wx, fltk, etc) Linux, AIX, and/or OS X support Dynamic, object oriented and/or functional, interpreted or bytecode compiled; interactive development Able to package or compile scripts into executables So far I've tried: Ruby: 148 MB on disk, 23000 files Portable Python: 54 MB on disk, 2800 files Strawberry Perl: 123 MB on disk, 3600 files REBOL: Great, except closed source and no MSSQL or ODBC in free version Squeak Smalltalk: Great, except poor support for scripting ---- cut: points of clarification ---- Why all the limitations? I realize some of my criteria seem arbitrarily confining. It's primarily a product my environment. I work as a SQL Server DBA and backup Unix admin at a division of a large company. In addition to near a hundred boxes running some version or another of SQL Server on Windows, I also support the SQL Server Express Edition installs on over a thousand machines in the field. Because of our security policies, I don't login rights on every machine. Often enough, an issue comes up and I'm given local Admin for some period of time. Often enough, it's some box I've never touched and don't have my own environment setup yet. I may have temporary admin rights on the box, but I'm not the admin for the machine- I'm just the DBA. I've no interest in stepping on the toes of the Windows admins, nor do I want to take over any of their duties. If I bring up "installing" something, suddenly it becomes a matter of interest for Production Control and the Windows admins; if I'm copying up a script, no one minds. The distinction may not mean much to the readers, but if someone gets the wrong idea I've suddenly got a long wait and significant overhead before I can get the tool installed and get the problem solved. That's why I want something that can be copied and run in the manner of a portable app. What about the small footprint? My company has three divisions, each in a different geographical location, and one of them is a new acquisition. We have different production control/security policies in each division. I support our MSSQL databases in all three divisions. The field machines are spread around the US, sometimes connecting to the VPN over very slow links. Installing Ruby \using psexec has taken a long time over these connections. In these instances, the bigger time waster seems to be archives with thousands and thousands of files rather than their sheer size. You could say I'm spoiled by Unix, where the admins usually have at least some modern scripting language installed; I'd use PowerShell, but I don't know it well and more importantly it isn't everywhere I need to work. It's a regular occurrence that I need to write, deploy and execute some script on short notice on some machine I've never on which logged in. Since having Ruby or something similar installed on every machine I'll ever need to touch is effectively impossible because of the approvals, time and and Windows admin labor needed I makes more sense find a solution that allows me to work on my own terms.

• Undefined referencec to ...

I keep getting this error message every time I try to compile, and I cannot find out what the problem is. any help would be greatly appreciated: C:\DOCUME~1\Patrick\LOCALS~1\Temp/ccL92mj9.o:main.cpp:(.txt+0x184): undefined reference to 'List::List()' C:\DOCUME~1\Patrick\LOCALS~1\Temp/ccL92mj9.o:main.cpp:(.txt+0x184): undefined reference to 'List::add(int)' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status code: //List.h ifndef LIST_H define LIST_H include //brief Definition of linked list class class List { public: /** \brief Exception for operating on empty list */ class Empty : public std::exception { public: virtual const char* what() const throw(); }; /** \brief Exception for invalid operations other than operating on an empty list */ class InvalidOperation : public std::exception { public: virtual const char* what() const throw(); }; /** \brief Node within List */ class Node { public: /** data element stored in this node */ int element; /** next node in list / Node next; /** previous node in list / Node previous; Node (int element); ~Node(); void print() const; void printDebug() const; }; List(); ~List(); void add(int element); void remove(int element); int first()const; int last()const; int removeFirst(); int removeLast(); bool isEmpty()const; int size()const; void printForward() const; void printReverse() const; void printDebug() const; /** enables extra output for debugging purposes */ static bool traceOn; private: /** head of list */ Node* head; /** tail of list */ Node* tail; /** count of number of nodes */ int count; }; endif //List.cpp I only included the parts of List.cpp that might be the issue include "List.h" include include using namespace std; List::List() { //List::size = NULL; head = NULL; tail = NULL; } List::~List() { Node* current; while(head != NULL) { current = head- next; delete current-previous; if (current-next!=NULL) { head = current; } else { delete current; } } } void List::add(int element) { Node* newNode; Node* current; newNode-element = element; if(newNode-element head-element) { current = head-next; } else { head-previous = newNode; newNode-next = head; newNode-previous = NULL; return; } while(newNode-element current-element) { current = current-next; } if(newNode-element <= current-element) { newNode-previous = current-previous; newNode-next = current; } } //main.cpp include "List.h" include include using namespace std; //void add(int element); int main (char** argv, int argc) { List* MyList = new List(); bool quit = false; string value; int element; while(quit==false) { cinvalue; if(value == "add") { cinelement; MyList-add(element); } if(value=="quit") { quit = true; } } return 0; } I'm doing everything I think I'm suppose to be doing. main.cpp isn't complete yet, just trying to get the add function to work first. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

• How can I get my Web API app to run again after upgrading to MVC 5 and Web API 2?

- by Clay Shannon
I upgraded my Web API app to the funkelnagelneu versions using this guidance: http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/mvc-5/how-to-upgrade-an-aspnet-mvc-4-and-web-api-project-to-aspnet-mvc-5-and-web-api-2 However, after going through the steps (it seems all this should be automated, anyway), I tried to run it and got, "A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly" What in Sam Hills Brothers Coffee is going on here? Who said this was a class library? So I opened Project Properties, and changed it (it was marked as "Class Library" for some reason - it either wasn't yesterday, or was and worked fine) to an Output Type of "Windows Application" ("Console Application" and "Class Library" being the only other options). Now it won't compile, complaining: "*Program 'c:\Platypus_Server_WebAPI\PlatypusServerWebAPI\PlatypusServerWebAPI\obj\Debug\PlatypusServerWebAPI.exe' does not contain a static 'Main' method suitable for an entry point...*" How can I get my Web API app back up and running in view of this quandary? UPDATE Looking in packages.config, two entries seem chin-scratch-worthy: <package id="Microsoft.AspNet.Providers" version="1.2" targetFramework="net40" /> <package id="Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure" version="1.0.0.0" targetFramework="net40" /> All the others target net451. Could this be the problem? Should I remove these packages? UPDATE 2 I tried to uninstall the Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure package (its description leads me to believe I don't need it; also, it has no dependencies) via the NuGet package manager, but it tells me, "NuGet failed to install or uninstall the selected package in the following project(s). [mine]" UPDATE 3 I went through the steps in again, and found that I had missed one step. I had to change this entry in the Application web.config File : <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity name="System.Web.Mvc" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" /> <bindingRedirect oldVersion="1.0.0.0-5.0.0.0" newVersion="5.0.0.0" /> </dependentAssembly> (from "4.0.0.0" to "5.0.0.0") ...but I still get the same result - it rebuilds/compiles, but won't run, with "A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly" UPDATE 4 Thinking about the err msg, that it can't directly open a class library, I thought, "Sure you can't/won't -- this is a web app, not a project. So I followed a hunch, closed the project, and reopened it as a website (instead of reopening a project). That has gotten me further, at least; now I see a YSOD: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. UPDATE 5 Note: The project is now (after being opened as a web site) named "localhost_48614" And...there is no longer a "References" folder...?!?!? As to that YSOD I'm getting, the official instructions (http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/mvc-5/how-to-upgrade-an-aspnet-mvc-4-and-web-api-project-to-aspnet-mvc-5-and-web-api-2) said to do this, and I quote: "Update all elements that contain “System.Web.WebPages.Razor” from version “2.0.0.0” to version“3.0.0.0”." UPDATE 6 When I select Tools Library Package Manager Manage NuGet Packages for Solution now, I get, "Operation failed. Unable to locate the solution directory. Please ensure that the solution has been saved." So I save it, and it saves it with this funky new name (C:\Users\clay\Documents\Visual Studio 2013\Projects\localhost_48614\localhost_48614.sln) I get the Yellow Strip of Enlightenment across the top of the NuGet Package Manager telling me, "Some NuGet packages are missing from this solution. Click to restore from your online package sources." I do (click the "Restore" button, that is), and it downloads the missing packages ... I end up with the 30 packages. I try to run the app/site again, and ... the erstwhile YSOD becomes a compilation error: The pre-application start initialization method Start on type System.Web.Mvc.PreApplicationStartCode threw an exception with the following error message: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.. Argghhhh!!! (and it's not even talk-like-a-pirate day).

• Generating .coverage file programmatic way with Visual Studio 2010

- by prosseek
I need to generate .coverage file programmatic way. This post explains a C# code to do it as follows. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using System.Diagnostics; using Microsoft.VisualStudio.Coverage; using Microsoft.VisualStudio.Coverage.Analysis; // You must add a reference to Microsoft.VisualStudio.Coverage.Monitor.dll namespace Microsoft.VisualStudio { class DumpProgram { static void Main(string[] args) { Process p = new Process(); StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder("/COVERAGE "); sb.Append("hello.exe"); p.StartInfo.FileName = "vsinstr.exe"; p.StartInfo.Arguments = sb.ToString(); p.Start(); p.WaitForExit(); // TODO: Look at return code – 0 for success // A guid is used to keep track of the run Guid myrunguid = Guid.NewGuid(); Monitor m = new Monitor(); m.StartRunCoverage(myrunguid, "hello.coverage"); // Complete the run m.FinishRunCoverage(myrunguid); Unfortunately, when I compile this code, I get the following error. bin2xml.cs(26,22): error CS0246: The type or namespace name 'Monitor' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) bin2xml.cs(26,38): error CS0246: The type or namespace name 'Monitor' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) As this post says, there are some changes between VS2008 and VS2010, I think the Monitor class is in some different namespace. What might be wrong? How can I generate the .coverage file programmatically with Visual Studio 2010? ADDED I added using System.Threading to run to get the following error. I run the command csc bin2xml.cs /r:Microsoft.VisualStudio.Coverage.Analysis.dll. bin2xml.cs(28,21): error CS0723: Cannot declare a variable of static type 'System.Threading.Monitor' bin2xml.cs(28,33): error CS0712: Cannot create an instance of the static class 'System.Threading.Monitor' bin2xml.cs(29,23): error CS1061: 'System.Threading.Monitor' does not contain a definition for 'StartRunCoverage' and no extension method 'StartRunCoverage' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Threading.Monitor' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) bin2xml.cs(31,23): error CS1061: 'System.Threading.Monitor' does not contain a definition for 'FinishRunCoverage' and no extension method 'FinishRunCoverage' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Threading.Monitor' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) ADDED2 I compiled the code with the following command. csc bin2xml.cs /r:Microsoft.VisualStudio.Coverage.Analysis.dll /r:Microsoft.VisualStudio.Coverage.Monitor.dll Then, I got these error messages. Monitor m = new Monitor(); is at the line 27. bin2xml.cs(27,21): error CS0246: The type or namespace name 'Monitor' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) bin2xml.cs(27,37): error CS0246: The type or namespace name 'Monitor' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)

• Delphi 5: Ideas for simulating "Obsolete" or "Deprecated" methods?

- by Ian Boyd
i want to mark a method as obsolete, but Delphi 5 doesn't have such a feature. For the sake of an example, here is a made-up method with it's deprecated and new preferred form: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; overload; //obsolete procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn(UseProtection: Boolean); overload; Note: For this hypothetical example, we assume that using the parameterless version is just plain bad. There are problems with not "using protection" - which have no good solution. Nobody likes having to use protection, but nobody wants to not use protection. So we make the caller decide if they want to use protection or not when blowing Hodir's horn. If we default the parameterless version to continue not using protection: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; begin BlowHodirsHorn(False); //No protection. Bad! end; then the developer is at risk of all kinds of nasty stuff. If we force the parameterless version to use protection: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; begin BlowHodirsHorn(True); //Use protection; crash if there isn't any end; then there's a potential for problems if the developer didn't get any protection, or doesn't own any. Now i could rename the obsolete method: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn_Deprecatedd; overload; //obsolete procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn(UseProtection: Boolean); overload; But that will cause a compile error, and people will bitch at me (and i really don't want to hear their whining). i want them to get a nag, rather than an actual error. i thought about adding an assertion: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; //obsolete begin Assert(false, 'TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn is deprecated. Use BlowHodirsHorn(Boolean)'); ... end; But i cannot guarantee that the developer won't ship a version without assertions, causing a nasty crash for the customer. i thought about using only throwing an assertion if the developer is debugging: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; //obsolete begin if DebugHook > 0 then Assert(false, 'TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn is deprecated. Use BlowHodirsHorn(Boolean)'); ... end; But i really don't want to be causing a crash at all. i thought of showing a MessageDlg if they're in the debugger (which is a technique i've done in the past): procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; //obsolete begin if DebugHook > 0 then MessageDlg('TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn is deprecated. Use BlowHodirsHorn(Boolean)', mtWarning, [mbOk], 0); ... end; but that is still too disruptive. And it has caused problems where the code is stuck at showing a modal dialog, but the dialog box wasn't obviously visible. i was hoping for some sort of warning message that will sit there nagging them - until they gouge their eyes out and finally change their code. i thought perhaps if i added an unused variable: procedure TStormPeaksQuest.BlowHodirsHorn; //obsolete var ThisMethodIsObsolete: Boolean; begin ... end; i was hoping this would cause a hint only if someone referenced the code. But Delphi shows a hint even if you don't call actually use the obsolete method. Can anyone think of anything else?

• Linq2SQL vs NHibernate performance (have I gone mad?)

- by HeavyWave
I have written the following tests to compare performance of Linq2SQL and NHibernate and I find results to be somewhat strange. Mappings are straight forward and identical for both. Both are running against a live DB. Although I'm not deleting Campaigns in case of Linq, but that shouldn't affect performance by more than 10 ms. Linq: [Test] public void Test1000ReadsWritesToAgentStateLinqPrecompiled() { Stopwatch sw = new Stopwatch(); Stopwatch swIn = new Stopwatch(); sw.Start(); for (int i = 0; i < 1000; i++) { swIn.Reset(); swIn.Start(); ReadWriteAndDeleteAgentStateWithLinqPrecompiled(); swIn.Stop(); Console.WriteLine("Run ReadWriteAndDeleteAgentState: " + swIn.ElapsedMilliseconds + " ms"); } sw.Stop(); Console.WriteLine("Total Time: " + sw.ElapsedMilliseconds + " ms"); Console.WriteLine("Average time to execute queries: " + sw.ElapsedMilliseconds / 1000 + " ms"); } private static readonly Func<AgentDesktop3DataContext, int, EntityModel.CampaignDetail> GetCampaignById = CompiledQuery.Compile<AgentDesktop3DataContext, int, EntityModel.CampaignDetail>( (ctx, sessionId) => (from cd in ctx.CampaignDetails join a in ctx.AgentCampaigns on cd.CampaignDetailId equals a.CampaignDetailId where a.AgentStateId == sessionId select cd).FirstOrDefault()); private void ReadWriteAndDeleteAgentStateWithLinqPrecompiled() { int id = 0; using (var ctx = new AgentDesktop3DataContext()) { EntityModel.AgentState agentState = new EntityModel.AgentState(); var campaign = new EntityModel.CampaignDetail { CampaignName = "Test" }; var campaignDisposition = new EntityModel.CampaignDisposition { Code = "123" }; campaignDisposition.Description = "abc"; campaign.CampaignDispositions.Add(campaignDisposition); agentState.CallState = 3; campaign.AgentCampaigns.Add(new AgentCampaign { AgentState = agentState }); ctx.CampaignDetails.InsertOnSubmit(campaign); ctx.AgentStates.InsertOnSubmit(agentState); ctx.SubmitChanges(); id = agentState.AgentStateId; } using (var ctx = new AgentDesktop3DataContext()) { var dbAgentState = ctx.GetAgentStateById(id); Assert.IsNotNull(dbAgentState); Assert.AreEqual(dbAgentState.CallState, 3); var campaignDetails = GetCampaignById(ctx, id); Assert.AreEqual(campaignDetails.CampaignDispositions[0].Description, "abc"); } using (var ctx = new AgentDesktop3DataContext()) { ctx.DeleteSessionById(id); } } NHibernate (the loop is the same): private void ReadWriteAndDeleteAgentState() { var id = WriteAgentState().Id; StartNewTransaction(); var dbAgentState = agentStateRepository.Get(id); Assert.IsNotNull(dbAgentState); Assert.AreEqual(dbAgentState.CallState, 3); Assert.AreEqual(dbAgentState.Campaigns[0].Dispositions[0].Description, "abc"); var campaignId = dbAgentState.Campaigns[0].Id; agentStateRepository.Delete(dbAgentState); NHibernateSession.Current.Transaction.Commit(); Cleanup(campaignId); NHibernateSession.Current.BeginTransaction(); } Results: NHibernate: Total Time: 9469 ms Average time to execute 13 queries: 9 ms Linq: Total Time: 127200 ms Average time to execute 13 queries: 127 ms Linq lost by 13.5 times! Event with precompiled queries (both read queries are precompiled). This can't be right, although I expected NHibernate to be faster, this is just too big of a difference, considering mappings are identical and NHibernate actually executes more queries against the DB.

• Does JUnit4 testclasses require a public no arg constructor?

- by Thomas Baun
I have a test class, written in JUnit4 syntax, that can be run in eclipse with the "run as junit test" option without failing. When I run the same test via an ant target I get this error: java.lang.Exception: Test class should have public zero-argument constructor at org.junit.internal.runners.MethodValidator.validateNoArgConstructor(MethodValidator.java:54) at org.junit.internal.runners.MethodValidator.validateAllMethods(MethodValidator.java:39) at org.junit.internal.runners.TestClassRunner.validate(TestClassRunner.java:33) at org.junit.internal.runners.TestClassRunner.<init>(TestClassRunner.java:27) at org.junit.internal.runners.TestClassRunner.<init>(TestClassRunner.java:20) at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.java:39) at sun.reflect.DelegatingConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(DelegatingConstructorAccessorImpl.java:27) at java.lang.reflect.Constructor.newInstance(Constructor.java:513) at org.junit.internal.requests.ClassRequest.getRunner(ClassRequest.java:26) at junit.framework.JUnit4TestAdapter.<init>(JUnit4TestAdapter.java:24) at junit.framework.JUnit4TestAdapter.<init>(JUnit4TestAdapter.java:17) at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.java:39) at sun.reflect.DelegatingConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(DelegatingConstructorAccessorImpl.java:27) at java.lang.reflect.Constructor.newInstance(Constructor.java:513) at org.apache.tools.ant.taskdefs.optional.junit.JUnitTestRunner.run(JUnitTestRunner.java:386) at org.apache.tools.ant.taskdefs.optional.junit.JUnitTestRunner.launch(JUnitTestRunner.java:911) at org.apache.tools.ant.taskdefs.optional.junit.JUnitTestRunner.main(JUnitTestRunner.java:768) Caused by: java.lang.NoSuchMethodException: dk.gensam.gaia.business.bonusregulering.TestBonusregulerAftale$Test1Reader.<init>() at java.lang.Class.getConstructor0(Class.java:2706) at java.lang.Class.getConstructor(Class.java:1657) at org.junit.internal.runners.MethodValidator.validateNoArgConstructor(MethodValidator.java:52) I have no public no arg constructor in the class, but is this really necessary? • Trying to write a std::iterator : Compilation error

- by Naveen
I am trying to write an std::iterator for the CArray<Type,ArgType> MFC class. This is what I have done till now: template <class Type, class ArgType> class CArrayIterator : public std::iterator<std::random_access_iterator_tag, ArgType> { public: CArrayIterator(CArray<Type,ArgType>& array_in, int index_in = 0) : m_pArray(&array_in), m_index(index_in) { } void operator++() { ++m_index; } void operator++(int) { ++m_index; } void operator--() { --m_index; } void operator--(int) { --m_index; } void operator+=(int n) { m_index += n; } void operator-=(int n) { m_index -= n; } typename ArgType operator*() const{ return m_pArray->GetAt(m_index); } typename ArgType operator->() const { return m_pArray->GetAt(m_index); } bool operator==(const CArrayIterator& other) const { return m_pArray == other.m_pArray && m_index == other.m_index; } bool operator!=(const CArrayIterator& other) const { return ! (operator==(other)); } private: CArray<Type,ArgType>* m_pArray; int m_index; }; I also provided two helper functions to create the iterators like this: template<class Type, class ArgType> CArrayIterator<Type,ArgType> make_begin(CArray<Type,ArgType>& array_in) { return CArrayIterator<Type,ArgType>(array_in, 0); } template<class Type, class ArgType> CArrayIterator<Type,ArgType> make_end(CArray<Type,ArgType>& array_in) { return CArrayIterator<Type,ArgType>(array_in, array_in.GetSize()); } To test the code, I wrote a simple class A and tried to use it like this: class A { public: A(int n): m_i(n) { } int get() const { return m_i; } private: int m_i; }; struct Test { void operator()(A* p) { std::cout<<p->get()<<"\n"; } }; int main(int argc, char **argv) { CArray<A*, A*> b; b.Add(new A(10)); b.Add(new A(20)); std::for_each(make_begin(b), make_end(b), Test()); return 0; } But when I compile this code, I get the following error: Error 4 error C2784: 'bool std::operator <(const std::_Tree<_Traits &,const std::_Tree<_Traits &)' : could not deduce template argument for 'const std::_Tree<_Traits &' from 'CArrayIterator' C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\include\xutility 1564 Vs8Console Can anybody throw some light on what I am doing wrong and how it can be corrected? I am using VC9 compiler if it matters.

• Run unit tests in Jenkins / Hudson in automated fashion from dev to build server

- by Kevin Donde
We are currently running a Jenkins (Hudson) CI server to build and package our .net web projects and database projects. Everything is working great but I want to start writing unit tests and then only passing the build if the unit tests pass. We are using the built in msbuild task to build the web project. With the following arguments ... MsBuild Version .NET 4.0 MsBuild Build File ./WebProjectFolder/WebProject.csproj Command Line Arguments ./target:Rebuild /p:Configuration=Release;DeployOnBuild=True;PackageLocation=".\obj\Release\WebProject.zip";PackageAsSingleFile=True We need to run automated tests over our code that run automatically when we build on our machines (post build event possibly) but also run when Jenkins does a build for that project. If you run it like this it doesn't build the unit tests project because the web project doesn't reference the test project. The test project would reference the web project but I'm pretty sure that would be butchering our automated builds as they exist primarily to build and package our deployments. Running these tests should be a step in that automated build and package process. Options ... Create two Jenkins jobs. one to run the tests ... if the tests pass another build is triggered which builds and packages the web project. Put the post build event on the test project. Build the solution instead of the project (make sure the solution contains the required tests) and put post build events on any test projects that would run the nunit console to run the tests. Then use the command line to copy all the required files from each of the bin and content directories into a package. Just build the test project in jenkins instead of the web project in jenkins. The test project would reference the web project (depending on what you're testing) and build it. Problems ... There's two jobs and not one. Two things to debug not one. One to see if the tests passed and one to build and compile the web project. The tests could pass but the build could fail if its something that isn't used by what you're testing ... This requires us to know exactly what goes into the build. Right now msbuild does it all for us. If you have multiple teams working on a project everytime an extra folder is created you have to worry about the possibly brittle command line statements. This seems like a corruption of our main purpose here. The tests should be a step in this process not the overriding most important thing in this process. I'm also not 100% sure that a triggered build is the same as a normal build does it do all the same things as a normal build. Move all the correct files in the same way move them all into the same directories etc. Initial problem. We want to run our tests whenever our main project is built. But adding a post build event to the web project that runs against the test project doesn't work because the web project doesn't reference the test project and won't trigger a build of this project. I could go on ... but that's enough ... We've spent about a week trying to make this work nicely but haven't succeeded. Feel free to edit this if you feel you can get a better response ...

• Maven not setting classpath for dependencies properly

- by Matthew
OS name: "linux" version: "2.6.32-27-generic" arch: "i386" Family: "unix" Apache Maven 2.2.1 (r801777; 2009-08-06 12:16:01-0700) Java version: 1.6.0_20 I am trying to use the mysql dependency in with maven in ubuntu. If I move the "mysql-connector-java-5.1.14.jar" file that maven downloaded into my $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/ folder, everything is fine when I run the jar. I think I should be able to just specify the dependency in the pom.xml file and maven should take care of setting the classpath for the dependency jars automatically. Is this incorrect? My pom.xml file looks like this: <project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0 http://maven.apache.org/xsd/maven-4.0.0.xsd"> <modelVersion>4.0.0</modelVersion> <groupId>com.ion.common</groupId> <artifactId>TestPreparation</artifactId> <version>1.0-SNAPSHOT</version> <packaging>jar</packaging>

<properties> <project.build.sourceEncoding>UTF-8</project.build.sourceEncoding> </properties> <build> <plugins> <plugin> <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId> <artifactId>maven-jar-plugin</artifactId> <configuration> <archive> <manifest> <addClasspath>true</addClasspath> <mainClass>com.ion.common.App</mainClass> </manifest> </archive> </configuration> </plugin> </plugins> </build> <dependencies> <dependency> <groupId>junit</groupId> <artifactId>junit</artifactId> <version>3.8.1</version> <scope>test</scope> </dependency> <dependency> <groupId>mysql</groupId> <artifactId>mysql-connector-java</artifactId> <version>5.1.14</version> <scope>compile</scope> </dependency> </dependencies> </project> The command "mvn package" builds it without any problems, and I can run it, but when the application attempts to access the database, this error is presented: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:217) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:205) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:321) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:294) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:266) at java.lang.Class.forName0(Native Method) at java.lang.Class.forName(Class.java:186) at com.ion.common.Functions.databases(Functions.java:107) at com.ion.common.App.main(App.java:31) The line it is failing on is: Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"); Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or how to fix it?

• Problem using easy_install on Windows 7, 64 bit. (cannot find python.exe)

- by Rune
Hi, I have just now installed Python 2.6 on my Windows 7 (64 bit) Lenovo t61p laptop. I have downloaded Sphinx and nose and apparently installed them correctly using python setup.py install (at least no errors were reported during the installation). Now I am trying to install pymongo using easy_install but I am not having much success. It seems that easy_install isn't working at all. I execute easy_install as administrator: C:\>easy_install Cannot find Python executable C:\Program Files\Python26\python.exe The path C:\Program Files\Python26\python.exe is correct. I have found this bug report on bugs.python.org which seems to be related, although its status is 'Resolved'. Do you have any ideas as to what may be wrong? Any pointers, hints or tips for diagnosing the problem further would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: This is the stacktrace I receive when trying to install pymongo: C:\Users\Rune Ibsen\Documents\Downloads\pymongo-1.4>python setup.py install running install running bdist_egg running egg_info writing pymongo.egg-info\PKG-INFO writing top-level names to pymongo.egg-info\top_level.txt writing dependency_links to pymongo.egg-info\dependency_links.txt reading manifest file 'pymongo.egg-info\SOURCES.txt' reading manifest template 'MANIFEST.in' writing manifest file 'pymongo.egg-info\SOURCES.txt' installing library code to build\bdist.win-amd64\egg running install_lib running build_py running build_ext building 'pymongo._cbson' extension Traceback (most recent call last): File "setup.py", line 166, in <module> "doc": doc}) File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\core.py", line 152, in setup dist.run_commands() File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\dist.py", line 975, in run_commands self.run_command(cmd) File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\dist.py", line 995, in run_command cmd_obj.run() File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\site-packages\setuptools-0.6c9-py2.6.egg\setuptools\command\install.py", line 76, in run File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\site-packages\setuptools-0.6c9-py2.6.egg\setuptools\command\install.py", line 96, in do_egg_install File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\cmd.py", line 333, in run_command self.distribution.run_command(command) File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\dist.py", line 995, in run_command cmd_obj.run() File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\site-packages\setuptools-0.6c9-py2.6.egg\setuptools\command\bdist_egg.py", line 174, in run File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\site-packages\setuptools-0.6c9-py2.6.egg\setuptools\command\bdist_egg.py", line 161, in call_command File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\cmd.py", line 333, in run_command self.distribution.run_command(command) File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\dist.py", line 995, in run_command cmd_obj.run() File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\site-packages\setuptools-0.6c9-py2.6.egg\setuptools\command\install_lib.py", line 20, in run File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\command\install_lib.py", line 113, in build self.run_command('build_ext') File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\cmd.py", line 333, in run_command self.distribution.run_command(command) File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\dist.py", line 995, in run_command cmd_obj.run() File "setup.py", line 107, in run build_ext.run(self) File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\command\build_ext.py", line 340, in run self.build_extensions() File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\command\build_ext.py", line 449, in build_extensions self.build_extension(ext) File "setup.py", line 117, in build_extension build_ext.build_extension(self, ext) File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\command\build_ext.py", line 499, in build_extension depends=ext.depends) File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\msvc9compiler.py", line 448, in compile self.initialize() File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\msvc9compiler.py", line 358, in initialize vc_env = query_vcvarsall(VERSION, plat_spec) File "C:\Program Files\Python26\lib\distutils\msvc9compiler.py", line 274, in query_vcvarsall raise ValueError(str(list(result.keys()))) ValueError: [u'path'] C:\Users\Rune Ibsen\Documents\Downloads\pymongo-1.4> PS.: I previously installed Python 3.1 but later installed 2.6 because I am not sure whether pymongo supports 3.1. • Function signature-like expressions as C++ template arguments

- by Jeff Lee
I was looking at Don Clugston's FastDelegate mini-library and noticed a weird syntactical trick with the following structure: TemplateClass< void( int, int ) > Object; It almost appears as if a function signature is being used as an argument to a template instance declaration. This technique (whose presence in FastDelegate is apparently due to one Jody Hagins) was used to simplify the declaration of template instances with a semi-arbitrary number of template parameters. To wit, it allowed this something like the following: // A template with one parameter template<typename _T1> struct Object1 { _T1 m_member1; }; // A template with two parameters template<typename _T1, typename _T2> struct Object2 { _T1 m_member1; _T2 m_member2; }; // A forward declaration template<typename _Signature> struct Object; // Some derived types using "function signature"-style template parameters template<typename _Dummy, typename _T1> struct Object<_Dummy(_T1)> : public Object1<_T1> {}; template<typename _Dummy, typename _T1, typename _T2> struct Object<_Dummy(_T1, _T2)> : public Object2<_T1, _T2> {}; // A. "Vanilla" object declarations Object1<int> IntObjectA; Object2<int, char> IntCharObjectA; // B. Nifty, but equivalent, object declarations typedef void UnusedType; Object< UnusedType(int) > IntObjectB; Object< UnusedType(int, char) > IntCharObjectB; // C. Even niftier, and still equivalent, object declarations #define DeclareObject( ... ) Object< UnusedType( __VA_ARGS__ ) > DeclareObject( int ) IntObjectC; DeclareObject( int, char ) IntCharObjectC; Despite the real whiff of hackiness, I find this kind of spoofy emulation of variadic template arguments to be pretty mind-blowing. The real meat of this trick seems to be the fact that I can pass textual constructs like "Type1(Type2, Type3)" as arguments to templates. So here are my questions: How exactly does the compiler interpret this construct? Is it a function signature? Or, is it just a text pattern with parentheses in it? If the former, then does this imply that any arbitrary function signature is a valid type as far as the template processor is concerned? A follow-up question would be that since the above code sample is valid code, why doesn't the C++ standard just allow you to do something like the following, which is does not compile? template<typename _T1> struct Object { _T1 m_member1; }; // Note the class identifier is also "Object" template<typename _T1, typename _T2> struct Object { _T1 m_member1; _T2 m_member2; }; Object<int> IntObject; Object<int, char> IntCharObject;

• Random Complete System Unresponsiveness Running Mathematical Functions

- by Computer Guru
I have a program that loads a file (anywhere from 10MB to 5GB) a chunk at a time (ReadFile), and for each chunk performs a set of mathematical operations (basically calculates the hash). After calculating the hash, it stores info about the chunk in an STL map (basically <chunkID, hash>) and then writes the chunk itself to another file (WriteFile). That's all it does. This program will cause certain PCs to choke and die. The mouse begins to stutter, the task manager takes 2 min to show, ctrl+alt+del is unresponsive, running programs are slow.... the works. I've done literally everything I can think of to optimize the program, and have triple-checked all objects. What I've done: Tried different (less intensive) hashing algorithms. Switched all allocations to nedmalloc instead of the default new operator Switched from stl::map to unordered_set, found the performance to still be abysmal, so I switched again to Google's dense_hash_map. Converted all objects to store pointers to objects instead of the objects themselves. Caching all Read and Write operations. Instead of reading a 16k chunk of the file and performing the math on it, I read 4MB into a buffer and read 16k chunks from there instead. Same for all write operations - they are coalesced into 4MB blocks before being written to disk. Run extensive profiling with Visual Studio 2010, AMD Code Analyst, and perfmon. Set the thread priority to THREAD_MODE_BACKGROUND_BEGIN Set the thread priority to THREAD_PRIORITY_IDLE Added a Sleep(100) call after every loop. Even after all this, the application still results in a system-wide hang on certain machines under certain circumstances. Perfmon and Process Explorer show minimal CPU usage (with the sleep), no constant reads/writes from disk, few hard pagefaults (and only ~30k pagefaults in the lifetime of the application on a 5GB input file), little virtual memory (never more than 150MB), no leaked handles, no memory leaks. The machines I've tested it on run Windows XP - Windows 7, x86 and x64 versions included. None have less than 2GB RAM, though the problem is always exacerbated under lower memory conditions. I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I don't know what's causing it - I'm torn between CPU or Memory as the culprit. CPU because without the sleep and under different thread priorities the system performances changes noticeably. Memory because there's a huge difference in how often the issue occurs when using unordered_set vs Google's dense_hash_map. What's really weird? Obviously, the NT kernel design is supposed to prevent this sort of behavior from ever occurring (a user-mode application driving the system to this sort of extreme poor performance!?)..... but when I compile the code and run it on OS X or Linux (it's fairly standard C++ throughout) it performs excellently even on poor machines with little RAM and weaker CPUs. What am I supposed to do next? How do I know what the hell it is that Windows is doing behind the scenes that's killing system performance, when all the indicators are that the application itself isn't doing anything extreme? Any advice would be most welcome.

• g++ symbol versioning. Set it to GCC_3.0 using version 4 of g++

- by Ismael
Hi all I need to implemente a Java class which uses JNI to control a fiscal printer in XUbuntu 8.10 with sun-java6-jdk installed. The structure is the following: EpsonDriver.java loads libEpson.so libEpson is linked dynamically with EpsonFiscalProtocol.so ( provided by Epson, no source available ) and pthread I use javah to generate the header file, and the code compiles. Then I put the libEpson.so in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/i386, and EpsonDriver.java uses an static initializar System.loadLibrary("libEpson") That part works, however, when I try to use any of the methods I get an unsatisfiedLinkError exception. • Better, simpler example of 'semantic conflict'?

- by rhubbarb
I like to distinguish three different types of conflict from a version control system (VCS): textual syntactic semantic A textual conflict is one that is detected by the merge or update process. This is flagged by the system. A commit of the result is not permitted by the VCS until the conflict is resolved. A syntactic conflict is not flagged by the VCS, but the result will not compile. Therefore this should also be picked up by even a slightly careful programmer. (A simple example might be a variable rename by Left and some added lines using that variable by Right. The merge will probably have an unresolved symbol. Alternatively, this might introduce a semantic conflict by variable hiding.) Finally, a semantic conflict is not flagged by the VCS, the result compiles, but the code may have problems running. In mild cases, incorrect results are produced. In severe cases, a crash could be introduced. Even these should be detected before commit by a very careful programmer, through either code review or unit testing. My example of a semantic conflict uses SVN (Subversion) and C++, but those choices are not really relevant to the essence of the question. The base code is: int i = 0; int odds = 0; while (i < 10) { if ((i & 1) != 0) { odds *= 10; odds += i; } // next ++ i; } assert (odds == 13579) The Left (L) and Right (R) changes are as follows. Left's 'optimisation' (changing the values the loop variable takes): int i = 1; // L int odds = 0; while (i < 10) { if ((i & 1) != 0) { odds *= 10; odds += i; } // next i += 2; // L } assert (odds == 13579) Right's 'optimisation' (changing how the loop variable is used): int i = 0; int odds = 0; while (i < 5) // R { odds *= 10; odds += 2 * i + 1; // R // next ++ i; } assert (odds == 13579) This is the result of a merge or update, and is not detected by SVN (which is correct behaviour for the VCS). int i = 1; // L int odds = 0; while (i < 5) // R { odds *= 10; odds += 2 * i + 1; // R // next i += 2; // L } assert (odds == 13579) The assert fails because odds is 37. So my question is as follows. Is there a simpler example than this? Is there a simple example where the compiled executable has a new crash? As a secondary question, are there cases of this that you have encountered in real code? Again, simple examples are especially welcome.

• Serializing WPF DataTemplates and {Binding Expressions} (from PowerShell?)

- by Jaykul
Ok, here's the deal: I have code that works in C#, but when I call it from PowerShell, it fails. I can't quite figure it out, but it's something specific to PowerShell. Here's the relevant code calling the library (assuming you've added a reference ahead of time) from C#: public class Test { [STAThread] public static void Main() { Console.WriteLine( PoshWpf.XamlHelper.RoundTripXaml( "<TextBlock Text=\"{Binding FullName}\" xmlns=\"http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation\"/>" ) ); } } Compiled into an executable, that works fine ... but if you call that method from PowerShell, it returns with no {Binding FullName} for the Text! add-type -path .\PoshWpf.dll [PoshWpf.Test]::Main() I've pasted below the entire code for the library, all wrapped up in a PowerShell Add-Type call so you can just compile it by pasting it into PowerShell (you can leave off the first and last lines if you want to paste it into a new console app in Visual Studio. To output (from PowerShell 2) as an executable, just change the -OutputType parameter to ConsoleApplication and the -OutputAssembly to PoshWpf.exe (or something). Thus, you can see that running the SAME CODE from the executable gives you the correct output. But running the two lines as above or manually calling [PoshWpf.XamlHelper]::RoundTripXaml or [PoshWpf.XamlHelper]::ConvertToXaml from PowerShell just doesn't seem to work at all ... HELP?! Add-Type -TypeDefinition @" using System; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Globalization; using System.Linq; using System.Windows; using System.Windows.Data; using System.Windows.Markup; namespace PoshWpf { public class Test { [STAThread] public static void Main() { Console.WriteLine( PoshWpf.XamlHelper.RoundTripXaml( "<TextBlock Text=\"{Binding FullName}\" xmlns=\"http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation\"/>" ) ); } } public class BindingTypeDescriptionProvider : TypeDescriptionProvider { private static readonly TypeDescriptionProvider _DEFAULT_TYPE_PROVIDER = TypeDescriptor.GetProvider(typeof(Binding)); public BindingTypeDescriptionProvider() : base(_DEFAULT_TYPE_PROVIDER) { } public override ICustomTypeDescriptor GetTypeDescriptor(Type objectType, object instance) { ICustomTypeDescriptor defaultDescriptor = base.GetTypeDescriptor(objectType, instance); return instance == null ? defaultDescriptor : new BindingCustomTypeDescriptor(defaultDescriptor); } } public class BindingCustomTypeDescriptor : CustomTypeDescriptor { public BindingCustomTypeDescriptor(ICustomTypeDescriptor parent) : base(parent) { } public override PropertyDescriptorCollection GetProperties(Attribute[] attributes) { PropertyDescriptor pd; var pdc = new PropertyDescriptorCollection(base.GetProperties(attributes).Cast<PropertyDescriptor>().ToArray()); if ((pd = pdc.Find("Source", false)) != null) { pdc.Add(TypeDescriptor.CreateProperty(typeof(Binding), pd, new Attribute[] { new DefaultValueAttribute("null") })); pdc.Remove(pd); } return pdc; } } public class BindingConverter : ExpressionConverter { public override bool CanConvertTo(ITypeDescriptorContext context, Type destinationType) { return (destinationType == typeof(MarkupExtension)) ? true : false; } public override object ConvertTo(ITypeDescriptorContext context, CultureInfo culture, object value, Type destinationType) { if (destinationType == typeof(MarkupExtension)) { var bindingExpression = value as BindingExpression; if (bindingExpression == null) throw new Exception(); return bindingExpression.ParentBinding; } return base.ConvertTo(context, culture, value, destinationType); } } public static class XamlHelper { static XamlHelper() { // this is absolutely vital: TypeDescriptor.AddProvider(new BindingTypeDescriptionProvider(), typeof(Binding)); TypeDescriptor.AddAttributes(typeof(BindingExpression), new Attribute[] { new TypeConverterAttribute(typeof(BindingConverter)) }); } public static string RoundTripXaml(string xaml) { return XamlWriter.Save(XamlReader.Parse(xaml)); } public static string ConvertToXaml(object wpf) { return XamlWriter.Save(wpf); } } } "@ -language CSharpVersion3 -reference PresentationCore, PresentationFramework, WindowsBase -OutputType Library -OutputAssembly PoshWpf.dll Again, you can get an executable by just altering the last line like so: "@ -language CSharpVersion3 -reference PresentationCore, PresentationFramework, WindowsBase -OutputType ConsoleApplication -OutputAssembly PoshWpf.exe

• How do I solve "Two different CRTLDLLs are loaded" when using packages in C++ Builder 2010?

- by David M
Hi, We are trying to split up our monolithic EXE into a combination of an EXE and several packages. So far, we have one package that we're trying to use, and when running the EXE Codeguard shows the following error on startup: CG Error Two different CRTLDLLs are loaded. CG might report false errors (C:\Windows\system32\CC32100MT.DLL) (D:\Projects\Foo\Bar.bpl) OK I read this as two different runtime libraries being loaded - one, the correct one (CC32100MT.dll), one incorrect, which is the package we're trying to use. Continuing to run the program shows odd errors, especially casting between classes or passing a pointer to a class as a parameter in a method that crosses the EXE/DLL boundary. Codeguard itself doesn't show any other errors at all though. How do we solve this? Some more details We've looked at as many things as we (the developer working on this and I) can collectively think of: Each project is built using runtime packages. The EXE host lists Bar in its package list. Each project is set to compile with dynamic RTL. However, changing this does not solve the problem. The package is linked to the EXE via its BPI file, but linking via a LIB makes no difference either. The EXE and BPL are compiled with the same project settings, where the same options exist for both types of project. We think, anyway :) There is only one copy of the BPL and BPI on the system: it's definitely linking to the right one. Examining the EXE and BPL with Depends and TDump show they are both using C:\Windows\system32\CC32100MT.DLL. They should both be using the one RTL. Creating a new project (a plain VCL forms application) and linking to the BPL (via its BPI) works fine. Something in the process of adding all the files and LIBs that make our EXE contain the code it needs to changes this, but we haven't been able to figure out what. The LIBs all either correspond to DLLs we use (flat C interface, usually look as though they were built with MSVC) or are simple projects with lots of related files, compiled to a lib for the purpose of linking into the EXE - these correspond roughly to the areas of the program we want to split to BPLs, by the way. There don't seem to be project options for the LIB projects that would affect RTL linking, unless we've missed them. I have exhaustively hunted through Depends and looked at all RTL and CC32*.dll files the EXE and every single DLL references. All are identical: rtl140.bpl and CC32100MT.DLL. Fully qualified paths show they are the same files, too. Everything should be using the one same run-time library. We're stumped. Absolutely stumped. We've had other problems using BPLs (they seem to be surprisingly tricky things, especially using C++) but have managed to solve them all. This one we've had no luck at all and we'd really appreciate any insights :) We're using C++Builder 2010 (as part of RAD Studio actually, but with little Delphi code apart from components.)

• evaluating cost/benefits of using extension methods in C# => 3.0

- by BillW
Hi, In what circumstances (usage scenarios) would you choose to write an extension rather than sub-classing an object ? < full disclosure : I am not an MS employee; I do not know Mitsu Furota personally; I do know the author of the open-source Componax library mentioned here, but I have no business dealings with him whatsoever; I am not creating, or planning to create any commercial product using extensions : in sum : this post is from pure intellectal curiousity related to my trying to (continually) become aware of "best practices" I find the idea of extension methods "cool," and obviously you can do "far-out" things with them as in the many examples you can in Mitsu Furota's (MS) blog postslink text. A personal friend wrote the open-source Componax librarylink text, and there's some remarkable facilities in there; but he is in complete command of his small company with total control over code guidelines, and every line of code "passes through his hands." While this is speculation on my part : I think/guess other issues might come into play in a medium-to-large software team situation re use of Extensions. Looking at MS's guidelines at link text, you find : In general, you will probably be calling extension methods far more often than implementing your own. ... In general, we recommend that you implement extension methods sparingly and only when you have to. Whenever possible, client code that must extend an existing type should do so by creating a new type derived from the existing type. For more information, see Inheritance (C# Programming Guide). ... When the compiler encounters a method invocation, it first looks for a match in the type's instance methods. If no match is found, it will search for any extension methods that are defined for the type, and bind to the first extension method that it finds. And at Ms's link text : Extension methods present no specific security vulnerabilities. They can never be used to impersonate existing methods on a type, because all name collisions are resolved in favor of the instance or static method defined by the type itself. Extension methods cannot access any private data in the extended class. Factors that seem obvious to me would include : I assume you would not write an extension unless you expected it be used very generally and very frequently. On the other hand : couldn't you say the same thing about sub-classing ? Knowing we can compile them into a seperate dll, and add the compiled dll, and reference it, and then use the extensions : is "cool," but does that "balance out" the cost inherent in the compiler first having to check to see if instance methods are defined as described above. Or the cost, in case of a "name clash," of using the Static invocation methods to make sure your extension is invoked rather than the instance definition ? How frequent use of Extensions would affect run-time performance or memory use : I have no idea. So, I'd appreciate your thoughts, or knowing about how/when you do, or don't do, use Extensions, compared to sub-classing. thanks, Bill

• Future of VB.NET? [closed]

- by Alex Yeung
Hi all, I worked with C# for years. Last year, I changed my job and the company use VB.NET. Of course, theoretically C# and VB.NET are very similar and I easily adapted. However, I have worked for VB.NET for 1 year. I cannot see any future of VB.NET. As a programming language, it is so foo. Here is a list of what C# can do but VB.NET cannot Case insensitive variables how to think a new variable name? If I have a property called FolderPath, i need to establish another private variable called _folderPath or m_folderPath. In C#, FolderPath and folderPath are two variables. Moreover, it gets compile error if variable name is same as a class name. For example Dim guid = Guid.NewGuid(). (What the...) Again, I need to think a new variable name. Adhoc scope In C#, we could use {...} to create a adhoc scope and all resource in {...} will not affect the code outside. However there is not such syntax in VB.NET. I could only use If True Then and End If to make a local scope which is so unclear. In-Method Region Sometime, it is unavoidable to have a long long method. VB.NET does not support in-method region. I always need to scroll down for 1000 lines. It wastes my time. No multi-line string definition In C#, we could var s = @"..." to define a multi-line string. In VB.NET there is no direct method to do that. The indirect way is use XML-literal string. Dim s = ....Value. However it is unclear. No block comment In C#, we have line comment // and block comment /* ... */. However in VB.NET we only have line comment which is a very big trouble for me. No statement end symbol Statements are separated by line break in VB.NET; while statements are separated by ; in C#. Underscore I think many people know underscore _ is continue statement symbol. I really disagree with that. I know MS VB.NET language team is going to remove the underscore syntax from VB.NET. However what can we do now? Although underscore is removed in the future, what's the advantage of that? I cannot see any advantage! With scope With scope is an evil scope. Although it allows shorter statement, it is hard to trace. Default Namesapce in project level It is a nightmare for me. The only advantage of VB.NET is property initialization. I think C# cannot do that (correct me if I am wrong.) Public Property ThisIsMyProperty As String = "MyValue" Remarks: I don't think optional method parameters is an advantage of OOP. By those disadvantages, I cannot see the future of VB.NET. Anyone sees the future of VB.NET?

• Configurable Values in Enum

- by Omer Akhter
I often use this design in my code to maintain configurable values. Consider this code: public enum Options { REGEX_STRING("Some Regex"), REGEX_PATTERN(Pattern.compile(REGEX_STRING.getString()), false), THREAD_COUNT(2), OPTIONS_PATH("options.config", false), DEBUG(true), ALWAYS_SAVE_OPTIONS(true), THREAD_WAIT_MILLIS(1000); Object value; boolean saveValue = true; private Options(Object value) { this.value = value; } private Options(Object value, boolean saveValue) { this.value = value; this.saveValue = saveValue; } public void setValue(Object value) { this.value = value; } public Object getValue() { return value; } public String getString() { return value.toString(); } public boolean getBoolean() { Boolean booleanValue = (value instanceof Boolean) ? (Boolean) value : null; if (value == null) { try { booleanValue = Boolean.valueOf(value.toString()); } catch (Throwable t) { } } // We want a NullPointerException here return booleanValue.booleanValue(); } public int getInteger() { Integer integerValue = (value instanceof Number) ? ((Number) value).intValue() : null; if (integerValue == null) { try { integerValue = Integer.valueOf(value.toString()); } catch (Throwable t) { } } return integerValue.intValue(); } public float getFloat() { Float floatValue = (value instanceof Number) ? ((Number) value).floatValue() : null; if (floatValue == null) { try { floatValue = Float.valueOf(value.toString()); } catch (Throwable t) { } } return floatValue.floatValue(); } public static void saveToFile(String path) throws IOException { FileWriter fw = new FileWriter(path); Properties properties = new Properties(); for (Options option : Options.values()) { if (option.saveValue) { properties.setProperty(option.name(), option.getString()); } } if (DEBUG.getBoolean()) { properties.list(System.out); } properties.store(fw, null); } public static void loadFromFile(String path) throws IOException { FileReader fr = new FileReader(path); Properties properties = new Properties(); properties.load(fr); if (DEBUG.getBoolean()) { properties.list(System.out); } Object value = null; for (Options option : Options.values()) { if (option.saveValue) { Class<?> clazz = option.value.getClass(); try { if (String.class.equals(clazz)) { value = properties.getProperty(option.name()); } else { value = clazz.getConstructor(String.class).newInstance(properties.getProperty(option.name())); } } catch (NoSuchMethodException ex) { Debug.log(ex); } catch (InstantiationException ex) { Debug.log(ex); } catch (IllegalAccessException ex) { Debug.log(ex); } catch (IllegalArgumentException ex) { Debug.log(ex); } catch (InvocationTargetException ex) { Debug.log(ex); } if (value != null) { option.setValue(value); } } } } } This way, I can save and retrieve values from files easily. The problem is that I don't want to repeat this code everywhere. Like as we know, enums can't be extended; so wherever I use this, I have to put all these methods there. I want only to declare the values and that if they should be persisted. No method definitions each time; any ideas?

• Modern alternatives to Java

- by Ralph
I have been a Java developer for 14 years and have written an enterprise-level (~500 kloc) Swing application that uses most of the standard library APIs. Recently, I have become disappointed with the progress that the language has made to "modernize" itself, and am looking for an alternative for ongoing development. I have considered moving to the .NET platform, but I have issues with using something the only runs well in Windows (I know about Mono, but that is still far behind Microsoft). I also plan on buying a new Macbook Pro as soon as Apple releases their new rumored Arrandale-based machines and want to develop in an environment that will feel "at home" in Unix/Linux. I have considered using Python or Ruby, but the standard Java library is arguably the largest of any modern language. In JVM-based languages, I looked at Groovy, but am disappointed with its performance. Rumor has it that with the soon-to-be released JDK7, with its InvokeDynamic instruction, this will improve, but I don't know how much. Groovy is also not truly a functional language, although it provides closures and some of the "functional" features on collections. It does not embrace immutability. I have narrowed my search down to two JVM-based alternatives: Scala and Clojure. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. I am looking for opinions. I am not an expert at either of these languages; I have read 2 1/2 books on Scala and am currently reading Stu Halloway's book on Clojure. Scala is strongly statically typed. I know the dynamic language folks claim that static typing is a crutch for not doing unit testing, but it does provide a mechanism for compile-time location of a whole class of errors. Scala is more concise than Java, but not as much as Clojure. Scala's inter-operation with Java seems to be better than Clojure's, in that most Java operations are easier to do in Scala than in Clojure. For example, I can find no way in Clojure to create a non-static initialization block in a class derived from a Java superclass. For example, I like the Apache commons CLI library for command line argument parsing. In Java and Scala, I can create a new Options object and add Option items to it in an initialization block as follows (Java code): final Options options = new Options() { { addOption(new Option("?", "help", false, "Show this usage information"); // other options } }; I can't figure out how to the same thing in Clojure (except by using (doit...)), although that may reflect my lack of knowledge of the language. Clojure's collections are optimized for immutability. They rarely require copy-on-write semantics. I don't know if Scala's immutable collections are implemented using similar algorithms, but Rich Hickey (Clojure's inventor) goes out of his way to explain how that language's data structures are efficient. Clojure was designed from the beginning for concurrency (as was Scala) and with modern multi-core processors, concurrency takes on more importance, but I occasionally need to write simple non-concurrent utilities, and Scala code probably runs a little faster for these applications since it discourages, but does not prohibit, "simple" mutability. One could argue that one-off utilities do not have to be super-fast, but sometimes they do tasks that take hours or days to complete. I know that there is no right answer to this "question", but I thought I would open it up for discussion. Are there other JVM-based languages that can be used for enterprise level development?

• inserting new relationship data in core-data

- by michael
My app will allow users to create a personalised list of events from a large list of events. I have a table view which simply displays these events, tapping on one of them takes the user to the event details view, which has a button "add to my events". In this detailed view I own the original event object, retrieved via an NSFetchedResultsController and passed to the detailed view (via a table cell, the same as the core data recipes sample). I have no trouble retrieving/displaying information from this "event". I am then trying to add it to the list of MyEvents represented by a one to many (inverse) relationship: This code: NSManagedObjectContext *context = [event managedObjectContext]; MyEvents *myEvents = (MyEvents *)[NSEntityDescription insertNewObjectForEntityForName:@"MyEvents" inManagedObjectContext:context]; [myEvents addEventObject:event];//ERROR And this code (suggested below): //would this add to or overwrite the "list" i am attempting to maintain NSManagedObjectContext *context = [event managedObjectContext]; MyEvents *myEvents = (MyEvents *)[NSEntityDescription insertNewObjectForEntityForName:@"MyEvents" inManagedObjectContext:context]; NSMutableSet *myEvent = [myEvents mutableSetValueForKey:@"event"]; [myEvent addObject:event]; //ERROR Bot produce (at the line indicated by //ERROR): *** -[NSComparisonPredicate evaluateWithObject:]: message sent to deallocated instance Seems I may have missed something fundamental. I cant glean any more information through the use of debugging tools, with my knowledge of them. 1) Is this a valid way to compile and store an editable list like this? 2) Is there a better way? 3) What could possibly be the deallocated instance in error? -- I have now modified the Event entity to have a to-many relationship called "myEvents" which referrers to itself. I can add Events to this fine, and logging the object shows the correct memory addresses appearing for the relationship after a [event addMyEventObject:event];. The same failure happens right after this however. I am still at a loss to understand what is going wrong. This is the backtrace #0 0x01f753a7 in ___forwarding___ () #1 0x01f516c2 in __forwarding_prep_0___ () #2 0x01c5aa8f in -[NSFetchedResultsController(PrivateMethods) _preprocessUpdatedObjects:insertsInfo:deletesInfo:updatesInfo:sectionsWithDeletes:newSectionNames:treatAsRefreshes:] () #3 0x01c5d63b in -[NSFetchedResultsController(PrivateMethods) _managedObjectContextDidChange:] () #4 0x0002e63a in _nsnote_callback () #5 0x01f40005 in _CFXNotificationPostNotification () #6 0x0002bef0 in -[NSNotificationCenter postNotificationName:object:userInfo:] () #7 0x01bbe17d in -[NSManagedObjectContext(_NSInternalNotificationHandling) _postObjectsDidChangeNotificationWithUserInfo:] () #8 0x01c1d763 in -[NSManagedObjectContext(_NSInternalChangeProcessing) _createAndPostChangeNotification:withDeletions:withUpdates:withRefreshes:] () #9 0x01ba25ea in -[NSManagedObjectContext(_NSInternalChangeProcessing) _processRecentChanges:] () #10 0x01bdfb3a in -[NSManagedObjectContext processPendingChanges] () #11 0x01bd0957 in _performRunLoopAction () #12 0x01f4d252 in __CFRunLoopDoObservers () #13 0x01f4c65f in CFRunLoopRunSpecific () #14 0x01f4bc48 in CFRunLoopRunInMode () #15 0x0273878d in GSEventRunModal () #16 0x02738852 in GSEventRun () #17 0x002ba003 in UIApplicationMain () solution I managed to get to the bottom of this. I was fetching the event in question using a NSFetchedResultsController with a NSPredicate which I was releasing after I had the results. Retrieving values from the entities returned was no problem, but when I tried to update any of them it gave the error above. It should not have been released. oustanding part of my question What is a good way to create this sub list from a list of existing items in terms of a core data model. I don't believe its any of the ways I tried here. I need to show/edit it in another table view. Perhaps there is a better way than a boolean property on each event entity? The relationship idea above doesn't seem to work here (even though I can now create it). Cheers.

• maven test cannot load cross-module resources/properties ?

- by smallufo
I have a maven mantained project with some modules . One module contains one XML file and one parsing class. Second module depends on the first module. There is a class that calls the parsing class in the first module , but maven seems cannot test the class in the second module. Maven test reports : java.lang.NullPointerException at java.util.Properties.loadFromXML(Properties.java:851) at foo.firstModule.Parser.<init>(Parser.java:92) at foo.secondModule.Program.<init>(Program.java:84) In "Parser.java" (in the first module) , it uses Properties and InputStream to read/parse an XML file : InputStream xmlStream = getClass().getResourceAsStream("Data.xml"); Properties properties = new Properties(); properties.loadFromXML(xmlStream); The "data.xml" is located in first module's resources/foo/firstModule directory , and it tests OK in the first module. It seems when testing the second module , maven cannot correctly load the Data.xml in the first module . I thought I can solve the problem by using maven-dependency-plugin:unpack to solve it . In the second module's POM file , I add these snippets : <plugin> <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId> <artifactId>maven-dependency-plugin</artifactId> <version>2.1</version> <executions> <execution>
<phase>test-compile</phase> <goals> <goal>unpack</goal> </goals> <configuration> <artifactItems> <artifactItem> <groupId>foo</groupId> <artifactId>firstModule</artifactId> <type>jar</type> <includes>foo/firstModule/Data.xml</includes> <outputDirectory>${project.build.directory}/classes</outputDirectory> </artifactItem> </artifactItems> </configuration> </execution> </executions> </plugin> In this POM file , I try to unpack the first module , and copy the Data.xml to classes/foo/firstModule/ directory , and then run tests. And indeed , it is copied to the right directory , I can find the "Data.xml" file in "target/classes/foo/firstModule" directory. But maven test still complains it cannot read the File (Properties.loadFromXML() throws NPE). I don't know how to solve this problem. I tried other output directory , such as ${project.build.directory}/resources , and ${project.build.directory}/test-classes , but all in vain... Any advices now ? Thanks in advanced. Environments : Maven 2.2.1 , eclipse , m2eclipse
