• How can I learn to effectively write Pythonic code?

  I'm tired of getting downvoted and/or semi-rude comments on my Python answers, saying things like "this isn't Pythonic" or "that's not the Python way of doing things". To clarify, I'm not tired of getting corrected and downvoted, and I'm not tired of being wrong: I'm tired of feeling like there's a whole field of Python that I know nothing about, and seems to be implicit knowledge of experienced Python programmers. Doing a google search for "Pythonic" reveals a wide range of interpretations. The wikipedia page says: A common neologism in the Python community is pythonic, which can have a wide range of meanings related to program style. To say that code is pythonic is to say that it uses Python idioms well, that it is natural or shows fluency in the language. Likewise, to say of an interface or language feature that it is pythonic is to say that it works well with Python idioms, that its use meshes well with the rest of the language. It also discusses the term "unpythonic": In contrast, a mark of unpythonic code is that it attempts to write C++ (or Lisp, Perl, or Java) code in Python—that is, provides a rough transcription rather than an idiomatic translation of forms from another language. The concept of pythonicity is tightly bound to Python's minimalist philosophy of readability and avoiding the "there's more than one way to do it" approach. Unreadable code or incomprehensible idioms are unpythonic. I suspect one way to learn the Pythonic way is just to program in Python a whole bunch. But I bet I could write a bunch of crap and not improve that much without some guidance, whereas a good resource might speed up the learning process significantly. PEP 8 might be exactly what I'm looking for, or maybe not. I'm not sure; on the one hand it covers a lot of ground, but on the other hand, I feel like it's more suited as a reference for knowledgeable programmers than a tutorial for fresh 'uns. How do I get my foot in the Pythonic/Python way of doing things door?

• apt-get doesn't see packages in my trivial repository

  I've tried to set up a trivial repository with binary .debs for internal use, but apt-get doesn't see the packages. I've done the following: On the web server: Created the binary debs with dpkg-buildpackage Put all of the binary debs in a web-accessible directory which corresponds to http://www.example.com/packages Generated a Packages.gz file in the same directory by doing: dpkg-scansources . /dev/null | gzip -9c > Packages.gz On the client machine: Added the following line to my /etc/apt/sources.list file: deb http://www.example.com/packages / Ran: sudo apt-get update The output related to my trivial repository looked like this: Ign http://www.example.com Release.gpg Ign http://www.example.com/packages/ Translation-en_US Ign http://www.example.com Release Ign http://www.example.com Packages Ign http://www.example.com Packages Hit http://www.example.com Packages But I can't install the package by name. For example, there's a package called "python-nova" which corresponds to package python-nova_2011.3-custom~bzr680-0ubuntu1_all.deb I've tried to do: apt-get install python-nova, but I get the following error: $ sudo apt-get install python-nova Reading package lists... • Back From Microsoft Web Camps Beijing

  I am just back from Microsoft Web Camps, where Web developers in Beijing had a good time for 2 days with 2 fantastic speakers, Scott Hanselman and James Senior. On day 1, Scott and James talked about Web Platform Installer, ASP.NET core runtime, ASP.NET MVC, Entity Framework, Visual Studio 2010, … They were humorous and smart, and everyone was excited! On day 2, developers were organized into teams to build Web applications. At the end of day 2, each team had a chance of presentation. Before ending, I also demonstrated my so-called “WebOS”, a tiny but funny Web website developed with ASP.NET MVC and jQuery, which looks like an operating system, to show the power of ASP.NET MVC and jQuery. Scott, James and me were joking there, and people cannot help laughing and applauding… You can play with it here: http://www.coolwebos.com/, if interested. • Watermark TextBox for Windows Phone

  In my Translator by Moth app, in the textbox where the user enters a translation I show a "prompt" for the user that goes away when they tap on it to enter text (and returns if the textbox remains/becomes empty). See screenshot on the right (or download the free app to experience it). Back in June 2006 I had shown how to achieve this for Windows Vista (TextBox prompt), and a month later implemented a pure managed version for both desktop and Windows Mobile: TextBox with Cue Banner. So when I encountered the same need for my WP7 app, the path of least resistance for me was to convert my existing code to work for the phone. Usage: Instead of TextBox, in your xaml use TextBoxWithPrompt. Set the TextPrompt property to the text that you want the user to be prompted with. Use the MyText property to get/set the actual entered text (never use the Text property). Optionally, via properties change the default centered alignment and italic font, for the prompt text. It is that simple! You can grab my class here: TextBoxWithPrompt.cs Note, that there are many alternative (probably better) xaml-based solutions, so search around for those. • The ship "shudders" in scrolling Asteroids

  In my Asteroids game the user can scroll through space. When scrolling, the ship is drawn in the centre of the window. I use interpolation. I scroll the window uing glOrtho, centering it around the centre of the ship. On my first machine (7 years old, Windows XP, NVIDIA), I am doing 50 updates and 76 frames per second. This is smooth. My other machine an old compaq laptop (Pentium III) with Linux and Radeon OpenGL driver delivers 50 updates and 30 frames per second. The ship regularly seems to "shudder" back and forth when at maximum thrust. When you position the mouse cursor beside the ship it is obvious that its relative position in the window changes. Also, the stars seem blurred into short "lines". Playing the game in non-scrolling mode, the ship moves within the window, glOrtho is therefore not called repeatedly and there is no problem. I suspect a bug in my positioning of the ship and the window but I have dumped out these values and they seem to only go forward, not forward-back-forward. The driver does support double buffering. I guess if it is my bug I need to slow the frame-rate down to debug properly. My question: is this an obvious driver bug or is the slower machine uncovering a bug in my stuff and if so, some debugging tips would be appreciated. I am drawing in world co-ordinates and letting OpenGL do the scaling and translation so if I had a quick way of verifying what pixel co-ordinates OpenGL produces for the ship centre, that would help clarify this.

• Venezuela's Highly Inflationary Economy Means Changes to Financial Statements

  This is a bit of an esoteric topic, but given the number of U.S. Companies (particularly oil companies) that operate and have subsidiaries in Venezuela, I think it is worthy of an honorable mention. As you may or may not know, Venezuela's currency has had some changes over the years. In 2008, the Venezuelan Bolivar became the Bolivar Fuerte which dropped three zeros. So Bs.10,000 became Bs.F.10 and all their bills and coins were changed to reflect this. Then on Jan. 8, 2010, the government devalued the currency by 100%. The conversion from VEF to USD dropped from 2.15 to 4.30. (I always wanted to visit Venezuela; I guess it's time to book my vacation). The SEC recently labeled Venezuela a highly inflationary economy. This means that US companies with investments/subsidiaries in Venezuela will need to apply highly inflationary accounting rules starting on Jan. 1, 2010. In addition, companies need to make more detailed disclosures when the Venezuelan reported balances differ from the actual US dollar denominated balances. In a nut shell, if you formerly used translation, then starting Jan 1 of this year, you must now use remeasurement (or temporal method) to restate your Venezuelan entity's financial statements. See ASC topic 830, Foreign Currency Matters, which states that "[t]he financial statements of a foreign entity in a highly inflationary economy shall be remeasured as if the functional currency were the reporting currency." For you non-accountants that I haven't bored and are still reading at this point, the reason why the SEC is doing this is to ensure financial statements are presented as accurately as possible. Hyperinflationary economies have volatile currencies, such as Venezuela (it's not every day a currency devalues 100% overnight) which can distort financial statements if the local currency (Venezuelan Bolivar Fuerte) is used as the functional currency. To make financial statements more accurate, the reporting currency of the U.S. parent (US dollars) should be used as the functional currency. FASB.orgactually has a nice write-up on this.

  TRADACOMS is an initial standard for EDI. Predominantly used in the retail sector of United Kingdom. This is similar to EDIFACT messaging system, involving ecs file for translation and validation of messages. The slight difference between EDIFACT and TRADACOMS is, 1. TRADACOMS is a simpler version than EDIFACT 2. There is no Functional Acknowledgment in TRADACOMS 3. Since it is just a business message to be sent to the trading partner, the various reference numbers at STX, BAT, MHD level need not be persisted in B2B as there is no Business logic gets derived out of this. Considering this, in AS11 B2B, this can be handled out of the box using Positional Flat file document plugin. Since STX, BAT segments which define the envelope details , and part of transaction, has to be sent from the back end application itself as there is no Document protocol parameters defined in B2B. These would include some of the identifiers like SenderCode, SenderName, RecipientCode, RecipientName, reference numbers. Additionally the batching in this case be achieved by sending all the messages of a batch in a single xml from backend application, containing total number of messages in Batch as part of EOB (Batch trailer )segment. In the case of inbound scenario, we can identify the document based on start position and end position of the incoming document. I don't understand what to do I even tried changing and adding Repository. Even tried choosing a different server. Even the "Choose best server" option doesn't choose anything. I really need help.   Upon reading over this question is lengthy so allow me to provide a one sentence summary: I need to get Google to de-index URLs that have parameters with certain values appended I have a website example.com with language translations. There used to be many translations but I deleted them all so that only English (Default) and French options remain. When one selects a language option a parameter is aded to the URL. For example, the home page: https://example.com (default) https://example.com/main?l=fr_FR (French) I added a robots.txt to stop Google from crawling any of the language translations: # robots.txt generated at http://www.mcanerin.com User-agent: * Disallow: Disallow: /cgi-bin/ Disallow: /*?l= So any pages containing "?l=" should not be crawled. I checked in GWT using the robots testing tool. It works. But under html improvements the previously crawled language translation URLs remain indexed. The internet says to add a 404 to the header of the removed URLs so the Googles knows to de-index it. I checked to see what my CMS would throw up if I visited one of the URLs that should no longer exist. This URL was listed in GWT under duplicate title tags (One of the reasons I want to scrub up my URLS) https://example.com/reports/view/884?l=vi_VN&l=hy_AM This URL should not exist - I removed the language translations. The page loads when it should not! I played around. I typed example.com?whatever123 It seems that parameters always load as long as everything before the question mark is a real URL. So if Google has indexed all these URLS with parameters how do I remove them? I cannot check if a 404 is being generated because the page always loads because it's a parameter that needs to be de-indexed.

  It’s interesting to see the debate caused by the iPhone debate over Flash.  In the new version of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement, Apple bans Flash and Monotouch: 3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited). • Decal implementation

  I had issues finding information about decals, so maybe this question will help others. The implementation is for a forward renderer. Could somebody confirm if i got decal implementation right? You define a cube of any dimension that'll define the projection volume in common space. You check for triangle intersection with the defined cube to recieve triangles that the projection will affect. You clip these triangles and save them. You then use matrix tricks to calculate UV coordinates for the saved triangles that'll reference the texture you're projecting. To do this you take the vectors representing height, width and depth of the cube in common space, so that f.e. the bottom left corner is the origin. You put that in a matrix as the i, j, k unit vectors, set the translation for the cube, then you inverse this matrix. You multiply the vertices of the saved triangles by this matrix, that way you get their coordinates inside of a 0 to 1 size cube that you use as the UV coordinates. This way you have the original triangles you're projecting onto and you have UV coordinates for them (the UV coordinates are referencing the texture you're projecting). Then you rerender the saved triangles onto the scene and they overwrite the area of projection with the projected image. Now the questions that i couldn't find answers for. Is the last point right? I've never done software clipping, but it seems error prone enough, due to limited precision, that the'll be some z fighting occuring for the projected texture. Also is the way of getting UV coordinates correct?

• How to improve batching performance

  Hello, I am developing a sprite based 2D game for mobile platform(s) and I'm using OpenGL (well, actually Irrlicht) to render graphics. First I implemented sprite rendering in a simple way: every game object is rendered as a quad with its own GPU draw call, meaning that if I had 200 game objects, I made 200 draw calls per frame. Of course this was a bad choice and my game was completely CPU bound because there is a little CPU overhead assosiacted in every GPU draw call. GPU stayed idle most of the time. Now, I thought I could improve performance by collecting objects into large batches and rendering these batches with only a few draw calls. I implemented batching (so that every game object sharing the same texture is rendered in same batch) and thought that my problems are gone... only to find out that my frame rate was even lower than before. Why? Well, I have 200 (or more) game objects, and they are updated 60 times per second. Every frame I have to recalculate new position (translation and rotation) for vertices in CPU (GPU on mobile platforms does not support instancing so I can't do it there), and doing this calculation 48000 per second (200*60*4 since every sprite has 4 vertices) simply seems to be too slow. What I could do to improve performance? All game objects are moving/rotating (almost) every frame so I really have to recalculate vertex positions. Only optimization that I could think of is a look-up table for rotations so that I wouldn't have to calculate them. Would point sprites help? Any nasty hacks? Anything else? Thanks.

• Turn off Windows Defender on your builds

  I've spent some time this evening profiling a Python application on Windows, trying to find out why it was so much slower than on Mac or Linux. The application is an in-house build tool which reads a number of config files, then writes some output files. Using the RunSnakeRun Python profile viewer on Windows, two things immediately leapt out at me: we were running os.stat a lot and file.close was really expensive. A quick test convinced me that we were stat-ing the same files over and over. It was a combination of explicit checks and implicit code, like os.walk calling os.path.isdir. I wrote a little cache that memoizes the results, which brought the cost of the os.stats down from 1.5 seconds to 0.6. Figuring out why closing files was so expensive was harder. I was writing 77 files, totaling just over 1MB, and it was taking 3.5 seconds. It turned out that it wasn't the UTF-8 codec or newline translation. It was simply that closing those files took far longer than it should have. I decided to try a different profiler, hoping to learn more. I downloaded the Windows Performance Toolkit. I recorded a couple of traces of my application running, then I looked at them in the Windows Performance Analyzer, whereupon I saw that in each case, the CPU spike of my app was followed by a CPU spike in MsMpEng.exe. What's MsMpEng.exe? It's Microsoft's antimalware engine, at the heart of Windows Defender. I added my build tree to the list of excluded locations, and my runtime halved. The 3.5 seconds of file closing dropped to 60 milliseconds, a 98% reduction. The moral of this story is: don't let your virus checker run on your builds.
