• Kill xserver from command line (init 3/5 does not work)

  Hi, I'm running Linux Mint 10, although I've had this same issue with other variants of Linux. I've been told/found while researching that if the X server hangs or otherwise errors, one can drop to a root prompt, usually at another tty, and execute init 3 (to drop to single user mode) and then init 5 to return to the default, graphical session. Needless to say, I've tried this before in multiple configurations on multiple machines to no avail. The only feedback I receive form executing those two commands is a listing of VMWare services (from a kernel module) that are stopped and then restarted. Note: If I run startx (either before or after init 3), then I am told that the xserver is still running and that I should remove /tmp/.X0-lock. Having tried that, it removes that error message, but claims that the xserver cannot be attached as another instance is running. How do I kill the xserver completely? Can I killall some process name?

• Windows 7 freezing unexpectedly

  I have a Windows 7 computer here, which is freezing between 2 times a day and 1 time every second day. I see no problem, no special drivers, no special Apps are open, no encryption or something like that. Apps usually open then are Firefox, Thunderbird, Eclipse and maybe Office. Computer is just freezing. No Reboot, no shutdown, no bluescreen and no error. User has to hardreset it. Eventlog shows me an kernel error saying it has been unexpected rebooted due to an fatal error, but no statement about what kind of error happended. Anyone an idea what it can be? Chkdisk should be ok (currently, I run it a second time).

• Log Files from bash script output

  I have a script that runs (this works fine). I'd like to produce logfiles from its output and still show it on screen. I have this command that creates three files from this blog: ((./fk.sh 2>&1 1>&3 | tee errors.log) 3>&1 1>&2 | tee output.log) 2>&1 | tee final.log This does exactly what I want it to. My only issue is that I create files in my script and copy them somewhere, and I'd like to copy these logfiles there too, which I can't do whilst this script is running. I also wanted to make it easier for any user to run my script, so I created another script to run this script. According to this post (see last post) I can put a . before the script name and I can use variables assigned in my called script from the first script if I use them in the first. It doesn't seem to work though and I can't figure out why or find alternative methods. Can anyone help?

  I am looking for patterns in the user journey of converted customers. I have each customers details in a row and then each step of the journey in it's own cell in columns, with up to 12 steps for each customer. For example if I want to find the count of every customer who at any point in their journey has for example, downloaded a pdf and contacted us via email, what formula is best suited to this? I've tried countifs but couldn't get it to work over multiple columns. Thank you.

  I am trying to query several different SQL servers and run a command on each of them. I am unable to get the connection string right. Code, below. I receive the following error:Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. I thought if I passed it the credentials it wouldn't care about the domain. How do I get around this? • Reliable 1tb or larger hard drive?

  I am in the market for 2-3 new drives, I would like each to be at least 1tb to 2tb in size. I have been reading all the reviews on newegg.com for 1tb and larger drives and they all have 1 thing in common. Almost all the ones I read about have complaints of them being DOA or dieing within a few weeks of use. I am hoping to find some drives with this storage range that have a reputation for lasting a long time instead of a short life. Please help me if you have any experience with these sort of drives? Most the ones I read about were Western Digital brand. I realize some might complain that this questions answer would be based upon a timeframe, so if a user searches and find this answer a year from now it will be outdated but I would appreciate any help based on the current hard drives available as of April 10th, 2010 on newegg.com

• How to share iPhoto library between multiple users

  I am looking for advice on the best way to share an iPhoto library between two users on the same Mac. I currently use this approach and it works fine most of the time. One issue I have is that I will get a permission error when syncing my iPod. This seems to happen if the other user has used iPhoto and I have not opened iPhoto before syncing the iPod. If I open iPhoto then sync the iPod again there is no error. How do others solve this problem?

• ubuntu fails to start

  I have a laptop with ubuntu 9.10 which fails to start, and I want to copy the data from it to an external hard disk. I can login in recovery mode command line, but then I cannot mount the external hard drive. (in recovery mode I cannot write to the laptops hard drive) If I boot from an portable USB with mintlinux, I can mount the external harddrive, and copy most of the data from the laptop, however there is a dir which I have no rights to access under /home/user/Documents then I get a permission denied error. Are there any other options?

  I'm looking for a simple method that will log file system operations. It should display the name of the file being accessed or modified. I'm familiar with powertop, and it appears this works to an extent, in so much that it show the user files that were written to. Is there any other utilities that support this feature. Some of my findings: powertop: best for write access logging, but more focused on CPU activity iotop: shows real time disk access by process, but not file name lsof: shows the open files per process, but not real time file access iostat: shows the real time I/O performance of disk/arrays but does not indicate file or process

• Installing ruby 1.9.1 on OS X with RVM, getting error I can't make sense of

  I'm trying to update my ruby install on Leopard to at least 1.9.1. I found a tutorial that tells me how to do it with RVM and I get as far as downloading, configuring and compiling the version I want, but during the compile I get errors. • Mapping an sFTP connection to a Windows drive?

  I'm looking for a way to map an sFTP connection to a Windows (Vista) drive. In other words, a tool that would add a new drive (let's say N:) to my computer, that would directly point to my remote server via sFTP. That way, "N:\my_dir\file.txt" would actually be something like "/home/user/my_dir/file.txt" on the remote server. Reading the file on Windows would download it, and writing content in it would upload it...network transfers being made via sFTP. I'm aware of Novell NetDrive, but it has various issues with long filenames, and seems to corrupt UTF-8 files content depending on the BOM. Do you know about any reliable alternative ? Thanks ! Edit : I have complete control of the remote server, except that it's remote enough for me not to be able to physically access it.

• Web Folder size/quota reporting tool?

  I am currently using a Visual Basic script to determine how big the web folders are and what quota is decided for each folder. The quota is in no way a physical limit, just a value inserted by me to decide whether a user is using too much space or not. The script does the job quite neatly and sends an html file by mail on a regular basis. The problem is that it's such a hassle to insert new quotas since I have to fiddle around with the code. A central "control panel" with an overview and ability to insert new quotas would be more suitable. Is there any software that can do the following: Scan specified folder/subfolders Report the file size and present it in some sort of interface (could be a php/mysql solution) Ability to specify a quota and see the difference value ? It is really important that the quota handling is made simple so that some non-technician can handle this.

• Java Issues in Microsoft Internet Explorer & Firefox with Java 6 Standard

  I have a user on Windows XP SP3 running Java 6 Standard Edition Update 20 (build 1.6.0_20-b02). The issue is that when Java applets load the Java splash screen is very shaky (I will have to take a screenshot if you don't know what I am talking about) and than the Java applet screen does not show properly. The Applet we use most is for a security camera and you can't view the camera properly because of the Java issues. I have uninstalled Java and re-installed and still having the same issue. I do not see any errors on the Java Console, and this only happens on his computer I am running the same version of Java and the browsers and do not have the same issue on my machine.

• Chrome and Firefox freeze when I begin typing

  Last night, chrome began freezing whenever I tried to type anything. After a fresh reinstall the problem went away but it is back again this morning. I installed Firefox as a substitute browser but it has the same problem. I cannot even get past the homepage because typing in the u r l bar freezes both programs. Last night internet explorer froze once too, but it has not happened since. Disabling shock-wave does not have any affect on the problem. Because it is happening across multiple browsers, I do not believe it to be caused by any extensions I have installed on Chrome. I also tried running Chrome as a new user and the problem still occurred. I can open any apps or web sites that are on my homepage, but as soon as I try to type anything the program freezes. Any ideas?

  I have a time management application that I use at home quite a lot and have running most of the time. At home, I have a desktop PC and a couple of laptops scattered around the house...all networked together. Unfortunately, the application I use is not multi-user and I risk losing/corrupting data if it has been left running on one computer inadvertently while I start using it on another one in another part of the house. I use Live Mesh to automatically keep the application's database synced across the different computers and I just need some way of making sure that I don't start using the application on another computer before closing it down on the previous one. Anyone know of any Windows software that can detect if an application is running simultaneously on different computers on my network, and warn me if I am about to have two open at the same time?

  Hi, Im trying to serve similar content over two websites, but don't want to have 2 of each file, especially when they are growing. The basics, im running CentOS, with cPanel. Is it safe to do the following, I have folder downloads1 in /home/user1/www/downloads1/ i have user2, can i make a group - groupadd sharedfiles add both users to the group: useradd -g sharedfiles user1 useradd -g sharedfiles user2 then chown -r -v user1:sharedfiles downloads1/ User 2 i want to have /home/user2/www/downloads1 but i want it to be a symlink like ln "downloads1" "/home/user1/www/downloads1/" lrwxrwxrwx 1 user2 sharedfiles 11 May 9 14:20 downloads1 -> /home/user1/www/downloads1/ Is this a safe practice? Or is there a better way to do this if I want them both to be able to share the files for distribution over apache. Is there any drawbacks to this? Thanks in advance for any light shed on this.   Does anyone know of a current, active solution to encoding x264 videos across many computers (via the network) to increase encoding FPS? I heard in the past of the project x264farm; unfortunately, it is not actively developed anymore, and isn't compatible with newer x264 builds. I'm looking for a current solution, which is compatible with newer builds of x264. Just to note this, I'm a Windows user, so I'm only looking for Windows solutions (or at the very least, Linux). I've also seen the ELDER distributed encoder, but the quality varies depending on the settings you use - I'd prefer a solution similar to x264farm as noted above (the documentation outlines the encoding process), but one that is compatible with new(er) x264 builds, and is preferably actively developed. Final Edit: Unfortunately, the bounty for this question has expired, and I haven't found a decent solution for this. So if at any time someone finds a new, distributed encoding solution for x264 (or any h.264 coded, for that matter) - please answer this question! I'd love to discover an ideal method to make this work!

It is not possible to install the SDK into another location without first rebuilding it, as the install location is contained within the qmake executable, and that is built as part of Qt.   Is there a way to change the desktop wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter Edition? I wanted to do that on my new netbook, just to find out that there is no "Customize" option in the control panel. Microsoft obviously wants to keep the netbook users rather rigidly from customizing their machines. It isn't even possible to edit the picture itself in the C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Windows\ directory, due to lack of rights. From what I can tell only the user "Trusted Installer" would have enough rights to do so... • How do I make zeitgeist work in Arch?

  I've been trying to setup Zeitgeist on my Gnome-shell system for a couple of days, but I'm yet to get it to work. I've done everything I could think of, i.e. installing zeitgeist from [extra], as well as libqzeitgeist. I've also installed all Gnome extensions created by Seif (https://extensions.gnome.org/accounts/profile/seif), since they're the reason I'm installing the package in the first place. I've tried running "zeitgeist-daemon --replace" and then "gnome-shell --replace", but nothing seems to work. According to Der Harm's wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:Der_harm#Gnome_Zeitgeist), the Zeitgeist daemon doesn't need to be explicitly started, but even if it was, I don't know how to do it (since it's not in /etc/rc.d, I bet adding "zeitgeist" to my rc.conf wouldn't do any good either). I can't believe there isn't a very simple setup here, please help me see what I'm missing!

  I know i can make my script run at boot time in runlevel 2 by putting it in /etc/init.d/ and creating a symbolic to it in /etc/rc2.d but thats when Linux is on hard drive. I want to run my script from a flashdrive such that when a user plug in a flashdrive and powers ON the machine, it may start booting from the OS in flash drive and eventually executing my script. How can I achieve such a functionality? I have tried burning OS to flashdrive but I never succeeded in booting OS from flashdrive.
