  • Desktop background will not load after performing aticonfig --adapter=all --ovt=opengl

    - by user1571959
I am trying to get Eagle to work on ubuntu 14.04 LTS. When I run Eagle and open a schematic the display is not refreshing/redrawing correctly. One solution that I found was to install the flgrx drivers and do the aticonfig command to use opengl... So I did and rebooted. Now when I turn on my laptop I get all the way to the login screen, login, and then nothing happens, it just goes to the background image with no icons or anything... I tried deleting and copying the original xorg.conf file and no results... What do I do other than reinstalling Ubuntu? is there anyway to force the original driver?

  • How do I connect my Windows XP laptop to the internet?

    - by rubysiddhi
Hello fellow super users, The Past I have a Acer Travelmate 2300 laptop running Windows XP. 6 months ago I moved into a new apartment and got a new internet connection set up. After getting an internet connection installed in my apartment I reinstalled Windows XP and at the same time wiped my drive clean losing all the original Acer software and drivers. Once XP was reinstalled I had to find all the drivers again to get the Travelmate laptop connected to the internet. So, using my Vista laptop which was connected fine, I went to the Acer Travelmate Series drivers download page to download the necessary drivers. I transferred them to my Acer XP machine and installed them the best I could (there were no easy instructions so I just had to find all the executables and run them). I eventually got connected to the internet but not exactly in the way I had hoped for. The Present To be connected to the internet I need to have an Ethernet cord connecting my computer (via the Ethernet port) to my router. This is a problem since it defeats the purpose of having a Wireless LAN card in my Acer laptop. One of the programs I downloaded from the Acer Travelmate Series page was the Acer Wireless LAN Configuration Utility. This program allows me to see the current network I am connected to and all the available networks I could potentially connect to. It reminds me of XP's Wireless Network Connection window/utility where you can see all available wireless networks, refresh the network list and connect to one of the networks. I should mention that my ISP set up a security enabled wireless network with WPA. This network requires a network key if you want to connect to it. I guess my Vista computer has the network key entered into it already. The problem is that I do not know what the network key is. Now obviously you would say just contact my ISP to get the key. And I will but there is just one extra weird issue. I am able to connect to another unsecured wireless network in the Wireless Network Connection window/utility. I can be on it as long as my Ethernet cable is plugged in. So this is not really wireless is it? And this indicates that even if I do get that network key password from my ISP, I will only solve one of the two problems I have. I will only solve being able to get online as long as I am connected to my router via the Ethernet cable. The Main Questions So how do I enable my acer IPN2220 Wireless LAN Card so that I can use my Acer laptop from anywhere with in my apartment? Or should I first get the network key from my ISP to access my security enabled wireless network? And then deal with getting the acer IPN2220 Wireless LAN Card working? Hard & Learned VS Easy & Stupid Of course contacting the ISP would be easier. Have em just come in here and do there thing. The problem with that is that they do not speak English (yeah, im in Poland) and it'd be a hell of a time trying to understand what they are doing (uncomfortable looking over their shoulder). Also, I want to learn how to do this task myself so that I can fix the problem if it ever happens again. You know, be more self sufficient. I look forward to helpful replies. Thanks, Xaviour

  • how to disable to automatic wireless interface up in ubuntu? [closed]

    - by Surjya Narayana Padhi
On my laptop I have a built in wireless card and I got one external connected via usb. By ifconfig command I saw both the cards connects to internet and gets IP. eth1 - the interface my laptop has in-built wlan1 - I have connected externally via usb. Now I applied "sudo ifconfig eth1 down" so that i can use only wlan1. But this eth1 goes down for sometime and then come up again automatically. So I am not able to test my externally usb connected wifi adapter. Can anyone suggest me way to disable eth1 interface?

  • Ubuntu 12.04 + Wifi not working

    - by user171154
i'm having problems connecting over wireless. At the moment, I'm using wicd. It seems to get stuck on "Verifying AP association...". Without wicd I can get the connection up and ping the Net - but if I take eth0 down (ifconfig eth0 down), my wireless goes away too (same result if I unplug the wire instead). wicd is the only way I can bring eth0 back (which is the main reason I'm using it) - ifconfig eth0 and/or ifup eth0 do not re-enable the connection (I just discovered it leaves out the gateway. Adding the gateway back in re-enables the connection including wifi; I didn't want to delete the info about wicd above in case it gives someone an idea.) Doing it manually, despite the errors (which it would be nice to also resolve) - allows me to ping the outside world: ifup wlan0 ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument ssh stop/waiting ssh start/running, process 17336 ping -I wlan0 -c 4 8.8.8.8 PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) from 192.168.0.12 wlan0: 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_req=1 ttl=43 time=48.8 ms 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_req=2 ttl=43 time=47.9 ms 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_req=3 ttl=43 time=48.7 ms 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_req=4 ttl=43 time=53.2 ms --- 8.8.8.8 ping statistics --- 4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3003ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 47.975/49.711/53.235/2.063 ms # • how to implement add item in spinner array adapter in android

    - by narasimha
    hi folks, i had a EditText , a button and a spinner . When click the button , the spinner will add a new item with name you entered in the EditText. But here is the question, my adapter.add() method seems doesn't work...here is my code: bt1 = (Button)this.findViewById(R.id.AddBtn); et = (EditText)this.findViewById(R.id.newSpinnerItemText); spinner = (Spinner)this.findViewById(R.id.dynamicSpinner); adapter = ArrayAdapter.createFromResource( this, R.array.simple_from_length, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item); adapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item); spinner.setAdapter(adapter); bt1.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View v) { String temp = et.getText().toString(); adapter.add(temp); // adapter.notifyDataSetChanged(); spinner.setAdapter(adapter); } }); error of this file: 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at java.util.AbstractList.add(AbstractList.java:410) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at java.util.AbstractList.add(AbstractList.java:432) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.widget.ArrayAdapter.add(ArrayAdapter.java:178) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at org.example.SpinnerKiran.SpinnerKiran$1.onClick(SpinnerKiran.java:56) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.view.View.performClick(View.java:2179) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.view.View.onTouchEvent(View.java:3828) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.widget.TextView.onTouchEvent(TextView.java:6291) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.view.View.dispatchTouchEvent(View.java:3368) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:863) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:863) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:863) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:863) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView.superDispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1707) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow.superDispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1197) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.app.Activity.dispatchTouchEvent(Activity.java:1993) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView.dispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1691) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.view.ViewRoot.handleMessage(ViewRoot.java:1525) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:3948) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:782) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:540) 02-27 18:01:17.728: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1982): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method)

  • DisplayPort -> DVI Adapter, Active or Passive?

    - by Aren B
I read somewhere that you only need an active adapter (usb powered) if you want resolutions greater than 1920x1200. I also heard from someone that you need it when running triple-monitor because more than two displays drains too much power. So to connect a 3rd monitor @ 1920x1200 to my video card's DisplayPort Port, do I need to spend the extra $100 and buy the active adapter?

  • Ping from specific network adapter on Windows

    - by Dean
Hey, I've been troubleshooting network issues on servers with 2 NICs and laptops with wired and wireless cards. How can I force the PING and TELNET to be sent from a specific adapter? I know it's a trouble with windows. Turning off one of the adapters is not an option, I am always connected through one of the adapters. There must be some command line option to prefer one adapter over the other. Thanks

  • Upgrade AirPort on Macs to support Snow Leopard's Wake on Wireless/WLAN?

    - by wojo
Snow Leopard now supports Wake on WLAN, but not all hardware supports this. For example, my Octo Mac Pro from early 2008 has an AirPort card, but it does not support this. Nor does my 2007 2.33GHz MacBook Pro. For reference to what is needed, look at http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/28/a-closer-look-at-snow-leopards-wake-on-demand-feature/ which includes a screenshot of what the System Profiler should show. It's pretty hard to find Apple parts, but is it possible to put newer cards into these machines to have them support Wake on Wireless?

How can I change the settings without the "netsh wlan" command? Thanks, mspoerr

  • What is the best way to setup a public and private wireless access point on the same home network?

    - by Dougman
For my home network (with internet provided from a cable modem) I would like to setup a secure wireless access point that I use for all of my personal connections (home PC, iPhone, Xbox, etc) and also another public access point that friends and folks in the neighborhood may connect to (for good karma). I want to ensure that my private traffic cannot be accessed from users of the public access point. I currently have one router that is running the Tomato firmware that I use with WPA security. What is the best way to accomplish this kind of setup securely (if it is possible in a home environment)?

  • Can I buy a wireless access point that also acts as a DNS nameserver?

    - by Brabster
Hi, I was wondering if I buy a wireless access point/router that also acts as a DNS nameserver for DHCP clients. I can see the hostnames of my home devices in the DHCP clients table of the router I have, it doesn't seem like a great leap of the imagination to have a local nameserver on there, something like hostname.home that automatically publishes those entries to a local zone. But - I can't find one that does that. Is there a reason why this shouldn't/can't be done? Or is my Google-Fu just weak? Cheers,

As part of the setup I've got to a screen requesting username / password / authentication server for the cable modem They have contacted Telstra who supply the username / password and say that is all they need. They dont know anything about an authentication server. There are a couple of answers up on Whirlpool forum found through google but those answers are 4 years old. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/475258.html http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/479615.html I havent tried them yet as I hoped to get actual answers before trundling over to my friends house again. Can anyone suggest, How to get information from Telstra support? (I realise this question maybe impossible to answer) What is the authentication server for Telstra BigPond for a user in Sydney Australia Are those whirlpool forum answers still valid? I guess if I dont get anything more here I'll try what it says on whirlpool and see what happens.

  • Why doesn't Ubuntu show my wireless device after updating the kernel?

After an kernel update Ubuntu doesn't show my wireless device. How can I fix this? I checked the syslogs and it says the following: 2010-02-16 19:25:39,913 WARNING: /sys/module/wl/drivers does not exist, cannot rebind wl driver 2010-02-16 19:25:39,940 DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted 2010-02-16 19:25:46,066 DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted 2010-02-16 19:25:46,086 DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted 2010-02-16 19:25:46,162 DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted 2010-02-16 19:35:05,451 DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted 2010-02-16 19:35:05,480 DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted 2010-02-16 19:35:05,506 DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted 2010-02-16 19:35:12,496 DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted 2010-02-16 19:35:19,870 DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted 2010-02-16 19:35:23,398 WARNING: modinfo for module wl failed: ERROR: modinfo: could not find module wl 2010-02-16 19:35:23,399 WARNING: /sys/module/wl/drivers does not exist, cannot rebind wl driver 2010-02-16 19:35:23,432 DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted

  • Why such a dramatic difference in wireless router max. simultaneous connections?

    - by Jez
Recently, I've needed to look into buying a wireless router for a mission-critical system at work that will need to support quite a few simultaneous connections (potentially a few hundred laptops). One thing I've noticed is that there seems to be a dramatic difference between the max. simultaneous connections different routers can support; see this page for example - anything from 32 to 35,000! Why is there this degree of difference? You'd have thought that if we know how to make routers that can handle thousands of connections, we wouldn't be making stuff that's limited to a pathetic 32 anymore. Is it a firmware thing? A hardware thing? Are low-end manufacturers purposely putting low arbitrary connection limits in so people can be "encouraged" to pay more for high-end routers?

  • How can I control wireless networks in Ubuntu without Network-Manager?

    - by Solignis
Hi there, I recently installed Ubuntu on a laptop I got. I was having issues with the network manager just like I was having in my VM where it was not setting up the hostname correctly. Anyhow now I have a problem, since it is a laptop it will be moving.... But I have no way to discover new wireless networks. Anyway I can gain that functionality back? The problem I am running into is that I need to set the DNS search and domain for the machine so I can access my network but the network-manager was overriding the settings. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Why is Windows 7 so slow to log-on when my Wireless USB dongle is plugged in?

    - by Sam
I'm using an Edimax Wireless USB dongle (model EW-7711UTN) on Windows 7 64-bit. The dongle works brilliantly (it was truly plug-and-play) except for one thing. I've noticed that if the dongle is plugged in whilst I'm logging on to Windows it introduces a massive delay - after I type in my password and hit enter, Windows shows the "Welcome" screen, then the screen goes black for 2 minutes or so (with just the cursor showing) before finally displaying my desktop. If I unplug the dongle before I enter my password, Windows goes straight to my desktop. Even though the dongle didn't appear to need drivers for Windows 7, I did try downloading the latest ones from the Edimax website, but that made no difference.

  • Run a server and local wireless network off my laptop with no internet.

    - by greg
I'm trying to run a wireless network from my computer so that people in range can connect to the network and hit a website running off my machine. I don't want to enable file sharing or remote access or anything else of that nature. I just want them to be able to connect to the network, type in an IP or domain name in a browser, and be taken to a locally hosted website. No broader internet access needed. Any ideas / links to good tutorials on the subject? Is this something i can achieve with just a wifi card or will need a router?

  • How do I create a script that checks if a computer is connected via wireless or ethernet?

    - by user4941
I am using log-me-in Central to look after a few dozen computers. These computers are used both for home use and work use. When the computers are used for work, they should not be connected via wireless. In the best case, I'd like to be able to use LogMeIn to prevents users on shift from connecting wirelessly. Still acceptable would be to have the computer email me if it connects wirelessly. If I knew how to set up a script that checks to see if the computer connected wirelessly and I could send an email, then I would be set.

  • Netgear routers don't allow you to disable wireless admin??

    - by MousePad
I just bought a new router, the NetGear WGR614. Nowhere in the settings can you disable the ability to administrate the router from a wireless connection, which opens it up to brute force attacks from outside the building. Furthermore, it doesn't require a direct connection to the router to admin either, you can admin it while you're connected to the Internet. This means it opens itself to the possibility of an attack from within the network. This is unbelievable to me. What am I missing? Can this be possible?

  • is it possible to set up a wireless bridge with dd-wrt?

    - by user398314
I have a standard router (dlink) and a secondary linksys running wrt. Currently i have it set up according to this guide. (using the Instruction for dd-wrt v24 sp1 settings) It works great however it seems as though i can only connect via the actually ports in the router meaning it has to be hard wired. Is it possible to set it up so that I can connect to the secondary router and still use it as a bridge? Seems like it doesn't work as a wireless AP anymore when its running in bridged mode.
