• Ubuntu Tools for recovering data from damaged USB Flash Drive ~ 10 Gb

  I have technical issues with my USB Flash Drive - JetFlash®V15 (TS16GJFV15) It's very critical situation because I can not see the data from it and I should get a way to recover them ASAP. So, in general, I have connected Non-stop that USB Flash Disk at my laptop. Was appear Power surges and when I was coming back, I saw that problem with it. Details regarding JetFlash®V15 (in present): - when I connect it on USP slot, the led is working intermittent and later on remain with constant light. - if I inspect the computer drivers, I found "Generic USB Flash Disk" (when the stick it's connected). - if I inspect "Properties", I can see next details: --- Type: unknown (application/octet-stream) --- Size: unknown --- Volume: unknown --- Accessed: unknown --- Modified: unknown I inspected that stick on 2 different computers (as well in different different USB Ports) and was the same problem, I can not see the content. I was checking with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 OS, but without success. With both OS was working before this issue. I'll appreciate an answer which will solve the problem, not an answer which will certify the problem. What I have to do, to recover the information form it (nearly 10 Gb)? I'm looking forward to be guided from a technical expert.

• H.264 Pricing confusion

  not sure if this is the right place but there seems to be other H.264 questions here, if not please point me to the right place! I am taking uploaded content and encoding it to H.264, I'm confused about the pricing though. Do I have to pay to host and stream this video on my server (in Ireland). I've tried looking around google but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer. Some countries have exceptions, some pay $2500. What kind of information should I be looking at to understand the pricing model more? Thanks.

  I need to check what gestures are available for certain touch pads, and also find out what kind of information is available. Is there some kind of application that simply recognizes gestures and prints out all relevant parameters for my test? I am mainly interested in multi-finger gestures, with 2-3 fingers, but also, whether distinctino about where a gesture was done (e. g. right border, left border) would be very helpful. Target is going to be Windows 7 and 8 64 bit.

The transition between SunSolve and My Oracle Support is to change how you think about the type of patch your looking for. For example, in SunSolve you might have typed e1000g if looking for an Enternet Driver.. but entering e1000g will not find anything in My Oracle Support - Patches and Update Menu. As you need to use the Product (Advanced) search which is driven of the Product Name, therefore you need to type "Ethernet" and select the ethernet product you are looking for to locate the patches for this product. Just to recap that video: If you are looking for the e1000g Ethernet Driver - You need to use Advance Search and search for Enternet 1. Log into My Oracle Support - Select Patches and Updates - Select Product or Family (Advanced Search). 2. In the product line enter: Ethernet and select the product name from the menu. 3. Check remove supersede patches - that ensure you only get relevant current patches in the results. 4. Select Search and the results are displayed. • Enabling SFTP Access within PLESK

  I have a client who wants to ensure his upload is secure, so we are trying to enable SFTP for him on our Linux PLESK server. I have enabled SSH access to bin/bash for FTP accounts, and created a new user. When I attempt to SFTP using either the IP address or the domain name, this is the error FileZilla is giving me: Error: Authentication failed. Error: Critical error Error: Could not connect to server Here is some basic information regarding the server: Operating system Linux 2.6.24.5-20080421a Plesk Control Panel version psa v8.6.0_build86080930.03 os_CentOS 5 I had read in some places that I should reboot the SSH Service in Server - Services, however, there is no SSH Service within the list. I'm not really a server guy so it's quite possible I'm missing something obvious. Thanks for any help that you guys can provide!

  Does anyone out their have rough (I don't need exact) pricing for Symantec (used to be Veritas) Storage Foundation for Windows? Its for Windows Server 2008 R2. Ideally, I would love to know the cost of Storange Foundation For Windows, and also the price of the options (like VRR, HA etc. ) if you happen to know them. Getting the information out of a reseller is like pulling teeth. They want to meet with us and discuss our needs etc. My needs are just to know whether its $100, $500, $1,000 or $10,000 per server in small qtys (i.e. less than 20 licences). Arghh. Anyone know the rough prices?

• Forking a GPL dual licensed software with business owned copyrights

  After receiving some threats of the copyrights holder of a dual licensed software(GPL2 and commercial) to buy the commercial version for projects in production, I am thinking to make a fork. In a case of GPL2 and commercially dual licensed with business owned copyrights software, is forking the GPL2 version an option? Also, is forking a good way to deal with such cases? Background information The software is a web CMS released under 2 versions a GPL2 free open source edition and a commercial edition including technical support and extra functionality. The problem is that now, basing their argumentation on the "distribution" definition of the GPL2, the company holding the copyrights argue that delivering the software and some extensions to a client is considered as a "distribution". And that such a "distribution" falls under the GPL2 obligation to release the custom made extension code. Custom made extensions are mainly designs, templates and very specific functionality. Basically they give me 3 choices: Buying the commercial licensed edition for projects based on the GPL in production, Deleting all the projects in production based on GPL2 version, Releasing all the extensions as GPL2 code. The first 2 options are nothing realistic for finished projects. The third option could be fine, but as most of the extensions are very specific, cleaning the code to make it usable by other users means lot of works and also I am not sure the clients will appreciate to have their website designs and specific functionality released publicly. The copyrights holding company even contacted some clients directly, giving them the "choice". I know that this is a very corporate interpretation of GPL2, and a such action is nothing close to legal, but as an independent developer, I don't want to take the risk to get involved in some long and tiring legal procedures. PS. This question was first asked on Stack Overflow where it felt out of the scope and closed, after reading the present site FAQ, discussing about software licensing seems fine.

• OUCH! Laptop running SUPER HOT after 12.10 upgrade!

  I was running 12.04 for 6 months, my laptop ran almost silently and cool enough to hold on my lap. I updated to 12.10 and now my computer gets too hot to hold on my lap and the fan is constantly running on full blast. Please let me know if you need additional information. What could be different between the two Ubuntu editions that caused such a drastic change? Edit 1: Per @Paul's suggestion, I ran htop to try to narrow down the problem. Here is the result! (left side of terminal) (right side of terminal) This is about 10 minutes after boot-up, htop, yakuake, and a chrome page with 1 tab opened to this question are all that I have manually opened. The most taxing program to the CPU is htop itself. I think that the problem must lie elsewhere; my temps are already up to ~65C for the CPU and ~69C for the GPU, with nearly 0% CPU usage.

• Extreme Portability: OpenJDK 7 and GlassFish 3.1.1 on Power Mac G5!

  Occasionally you hear someone grumble about platform support for some portion or combination of the Java product "stack". As you're about to see, this really is not as much of a problem as you might think. Our friend John Yeary was able to pull off a pretty slick feat with his vintage Power Mac G5. In his words: Using a build script sent to me by Kurt Miller, build recommendations from Kelly O'Hair, and the great work of the BSD Port team... I created a new build of OpenJDK 7 for my PPC based system using the Zero VM. The results are fantastic. I can run GlassFish 3.1.1 along with all my enterprise applications. I recently had the opportunity to pick up an old G5 for little money and passed on it. What would I do with it? At the time, I didn't think it would be more than a space-consuming novelty. Turns out...I could have had some fun and a useful piece of hardware at the same time. Maybe it's time to go bargain-hunting again. • What is a safe way to dispose of personal info on an old laptop and what to do with said laptop?

  I have an old laptop someone gave me that only has 64Megs of RAM on it and runs WIN XP. I wanted to wipe the drive clean by installing Ubuntu Desktop to remove any shred of personal information on it and to make it useful to someone else. But the Ubuntu installer keeps failing because there is not enough RAM. Is there another version of Linux that would easily install on a 64 Megs of RAM system? 2nd part of question, what do I do with this old laptop? It doesn't have a battery anymore and has to be plugged into the wall to run. Assuming I can install a good Linux distro on it, who do I give it to? Salvation Army? I'm looking to just have it be useful to someone or some organization for spare parts or some basic computer usage.

When doing this i have collected data (phone model etc) and send it to the server with a regular GET HTTP call like this: http://www.myserver.com/getData.php?phonemodel=userphone&appversion=2&id=20 This is logged in the IIS logfiles. I thought of writing my own parser for log files. But why invent the wheel? I´m looking for a software that can read the IIS 6 logfiles. I would like it to be able to do: Extraction - Extract all lines that contains: www.myserver.com/getData Filtering - View all lines where http-code is not 200 Queries - View all lines where phonemodel=iphone Any tips on free software that can help me with this? • RDP locks up login, doesn't unlock on Windows

  From time to time, my system, when I try to login TRHOUGH or AFTER a remote connection, locks up the login session. I can't login anymore, the screen turns black (the monitor is still active, the image is black). Especially in the recent case, the system did not come back from the lock-up, and I had to reset the computer. Any idea what might be the issue here? More information: Both Computers are Windows 7, The RDP Server has a wired connection, the Client has either Wireless or Wired. The network card involved on the server is a "Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20)" card built-in on an ASRock Mainboard. I'm using either local LAN or internet connection through NAT/Router.

• What are some internet trends that you've noticed over the past ~10 years? [closed]

  I'll give an example of one that I've noticed: the number of web sites that ask for your email address (GOOG ID, YAHOO! ID, etc.) has skyrocketed. I can come up with no legitimate reason for this other than (1) password reset [other ways to do this], or (2) to remind you that you have an account there, based upon the time of your last visit. Why does a web site need to know your email address (Google ID, etc.) if all you want to do is... download a file (no legit reason whatsoever) play a game (no legit reason whatsoever) take an IQ test or search a database (no legit reason whatsoever) watch a video or view a picture (no legit reason whatsoever) read a forum (no legit reason whatsoever) post on a forum (mildly legit reason: password reset) newsletter (only difference between a newsletter and a blog is that you're more likely to forget about the web site than you are to forget about your email address -- the majority of web sites do not send out newsletters, however, so this can't be the justification) post twitter messages or other instant messaging (mildly legit reason: password reset) buy something (mildly legit reasons: password reset + giving you a copy of a receipt that they can't delete, as receipts stored on their server can be deleted) On the other hand, I can think of plenty of very shady reasons for asking for this information: so the NSA, CIA, FBI, etc. can very easily track what you do by reading your email or asking GOOG, etc. what sites you used your GOOG ID at to use the password that you provide for your account in order to get into your email account (most people use the same password for all of their accounts), find all of your other accounts in your inbox, and then get into all of those accounts sell your email address to spammers These reasons, I believe, are why you are constantly asked to provide your email address. I can come up with no other explanations whatsoever. Question 1: Can anyone think of any legitimate or illegitimate reasons for asking for someone's email address? Question 2: What are some other interesting internet trends of the past ~10 years?

• 1080p Screen resolution problem after 10.04 to 12.04 update

  I have a Samsung LCD 40" with a NVidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 Card. I recently upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04 and the best resolution I can get is 1360x768. I've tried the propietary drivers available on the repository kmod:nvidia_current kmod:nvidia_173_updates kmod:nvidia_current_updates kmod:nvidia_96 kmod:nvidia_96_updates kmod:nvidia_173 I've also downloaded latest from NVidia's Web, version: 295.40. But still no luck. With Nouveau driver, I can only get 1024x768. I know there is no problem with my hardware (video card, cable and monitor), I was using it perfectly on 10.04. Can anybody suggest something else I could try, to get my 1920x1080 resolution back? Thanks in advance.   I find it really annoying that for some radio stations, which have two or more servers to cope with the network load, there is not one single entry in amaroks playlist but two or more entries. This makes it hard to pick the radio station from the list I like to listen to because all the entries are always shown with the last played track as name, and even if I only have a few radio stations in my list there will eventually be many different entries. And, if I use the keyboard shortcuts to navigate the playlist I always have to remember that radio station X has for example four entries in the playlist, so I have to press the shortcut for switching tracks four times to actually switch the to the next station. Now, ideally I would like some solution for amarok, but if someone knows of another media player that does this or something I would appreciate that information as well.

• Root certificate authority works windows/linux but not mac osx - (malformed)

  I have created a self-signed root certificate authority which if I install onto windows, linux, or even using the certificate store in firefox (windows/linux/macosx) will work perfectly with my terminating proxy. I have installed it into the system keychain and I have set the certificate to always trust. Within the chrome browser details it says "The certificate that Chrome received during this connection attempt is not formatted correctly, so Chrome cannot use it to protect your information. Error type: Malformed certificate" I used this code to create the certificate: openssl genrsa -des3 -passout pass:***** -out private/server.key 4096 openssl req -batch -passin pass:***** -new -x509 -nodes -sha1 -days 3600 -key private/server.key -out server.crt -config ../openssl.cnf If the issue is NOT that it is malformed (because it works everywhere else) then what else could it be? Am I installing it incorrectly? Update I tried changing the certificate attributes, but to no avail: openssl genrsa -des -passout pass:***** -out private/server.key 2048 openssl req -batch -passin pass:***** -new -x509 -nodes -sha256 -days 3600 -key private/server.key -out server.crt -config ../openssl.cnf

• Why is access to my database very slow?

  I have a mysql database that used to work perfectly fine, but now it is dead slow on startup. When I type in $> mysql -u foo bar I get the following usual message for about 30 seconds before I get a prompt : Reading table information for completion of table and column names You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A Of course, I tried it and it goes a lot faster : $> mysql -u foo bar -A But why do I have to wait so long in regular startup ? This is not a very big database, and data does not seem to be corrupted (everything looks fine after startup). I have no other client connecting to the mysql server at the same time (only one process is shown with the command show full processlist) and I have already restarted the mysqld service. What's going on ?

• iPhone VPN to iTunes Home Sharing

  my goal is to set up a VPN on a Windows machine that contains my iTunes library then connect to that VPN with my iPhone and be able to utilize Home Sharing remotely. I have read that this can easily be set up if the iTunes library is on a Mac (Network Beacon and YazSoft ShareTool are two products I quickly found). I can't find anyone who has had success on a Windows machine, though. In my thinking, there are two options (aside from buying a Mac): 1.) Existing utility that takes care of this for me (like the Mac-only options listed above) and is compatible with iPhone (Hamachi is NOT compatible with iPhone VPN) 2.) Manually configure a VPN to allow Bonjour multicast (can't find any information on this) FYI my router is a Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato 1.28

• Windows 8.1 backlight turns off

  This is one of the strangest things I have ever seen. I have an HP Elitebook 8460p and recently updated my Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Now when I have certain windows open and focused (it's always different, sometimes it's chrome, sometimes it's the control-panel and so on, there is no clear pattern) the backlight of the screen is completely turned off - when I take a torch and point it to the screen or hold it to a bright-light source I can see there is still a picture there you can even work (or better said you cuold if you'd see anything). When I tab to certain other windows the screen goes back to normal back light - I can then tab back to the other window and the backlight will be turned off again. I have no idea what's going on and also no idea what information you need. The display-adapter I got is the AMD Radeon HD 6400M - I tried updating to the newest driver but that didn't help. • Cannot view dates of emails(no date field), in my CSV file exported from MS Outlook

  I am using Outlook 2010 - I have my emails showing in there. and exported my emails, into a csv file. (file..options..advanced...export..export to a file.. I have opened that csv file in excel Here is a list of the fields it shows. I see "Date" doesn't appear among them. Also, (and less importantly, and as a very secondary issue) is there a convenient way to read the csv file? reading an email with a long body, in excel, is not convenient, I need to select all of the body from the cell and copy/paste it into notepad.
