• Best client and server antivirus for 5 user office?

  I'm setting up an Active Directory environment for 5 users (very small) and I'm wondering what is the best antivirus for clients (Windows 7) and servers (Server 2008 R2 x64)? I use Symantec Corp at my organization (50+ users) but I think that is overkill for this company. I wanted to use Microsoft Security Essentials for the clients (I use it for home machines and it's the best free AV in my opinion) but I don't think it will work on the Servers (3 servers, PDC, TS, and File). They are behind a Sonicwall TZ 200. What would be the best. Free would be even better. Thank you!

• Cannot view, use, or open CDs or DVDs in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am fairly new to Ubuntu 12.04 and I have encountered a rather irritating problem. Whenever I insert a CD or DVD (whether it have data, music, movies, or nothing at all), nothing pops up saying "you have inserted a CD", "play with Rhythmbox?" etc. It doesn't show the CD in the launcher/dock or anything of the sort. This is especially peculiar because not only do I have a standard IDE built-in optical drive, but I have an external USB optical drive. Neither work. In addition, whenever I go to "Computer///" and I click (double click, right click, or even left click) on "CD/DVD Drive" nothing happens, when I right click and select "Open" nothing happens either [for either of the two drives (both are listed in Computer///)] And if I insert a blank disk and go to a disk burning program such as Brasero, and try to burn to the drive it detects no CDs or DVDs of any kind. • SmS Gateways - How do other sites do it? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Send and Receive SMS from my Website I would love to have a feature on my site that sends Email reminders and SmS(text messages) to people mobile phones. I been searching around and all I am finding is api's that charge money per SmS message(as low as 1cent per message). However even at 1cent per message that is still too much. The amount of money I am charging per year could be servilely eroded by just the Sms messages along. I could of course charge more money for my service or have an add on for SmS messages but I don't think either would work as most people expect it to be free feature and if they have to pay anything that is because of their carrier charging them not the website. How do other sites do it? I guessing companies like google have their own gateway providers or something like that. But how about smaller sites what do they do? I can't see them paying per sms text message.

• Joining H264 *without* re-encoding

  I have two halves of a single show in two .MP4 files, encoded in H264. I would like to join them without re-encoding. Is this possible? I managed to create a joined video as a Quicktime file (.mov) using Quicktime Pro, but then Quicktime Pro will not convert it back to .MP4 without re-encoding. This may be because looking inside the .mov file, the two H264 videos are in there still separated as individual "objects". I am also struggling with MPEG StreamClip without reaching a real solution. But I may have missed something. Note that I do not have the same issue with MPEG2 files. I can export them to a .MPEG container or a .TS file for example, and then I can join them without re-encoding using MPEG Streamclip. Any suggestion welcome, preferably using Mac software.

• Having set up a DCHP server, what do I need to do for the rest of my network?

  I've got a Raspberry Pi arriving any day now, and I intend to use it (amongst other things) as a DHCP server. Currently we have a few devices on our network to which we would like to assign static IPs, and a router, which is currently the DHCP server (the router can assign static IPs, but is buggy as hell, I've never got the config to stick for more than a few hours). Having connected the Pi to the network and configured dhcpl-3-server, what do I need to do on the rest of my network so that it works properly (clients get their IPs from the Pi, and use the Router as the default gateway)?

• Dual booted Windows 7 freezes after login screen

  First-time Linux user, using a Packard Bell Easy Note TS laptop. My problem arose after I dual boot installed Ubuntu 12.04 on Windows 7 via WUBI. I backed up all my data, and reinstalled Windows from factory settings on the recovery partition. When I first tried to install Ubuntu I mistakenly closed the lid at the start of the installation, stopping it. After that I rebooted, and my second installation attempt went without a hitch. Ubuntu works perfectly, the data on the partitions seem to be fine. My problem is I can't log back in to Windows 7. After selecting it in GRUB, and then in the Windows 7/ WUBI choice on boot, it loads up perfectly til the user log in screen. After the password is inputted, it stalls on the "Welcome" busy screen. This happens in Safe mode as well. Startup repair can't find a problem and neither can CHKDSK. System restore and Last known good config have no effect either. If anyone could help me out, I'd be real grateful. edit in response to the question below, since I don't know how to comment: Windows was installed first and its partitions are the first on the list. Should I move the windows partitions to after the Linux ones on the disk? Thanks for your help.

• Gnome Shell opens as classic

  I'm running 12.04 on a Gateway LT4004u netbook, and I installed Gnome3 using the apt-get commands in the terminal. When I rebooted and ran "Gnome Shell" it opened up classic mode. I thought that my cursor might have slipped the first time, but on multiple retries logging in under gnome shell would open the gnome classic desktop. I even uninstalled Gnome Shell and reinstalled it with software center, but I still have the same problem. I was wondering if this might be an issue with my graphics card? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks! -Joe

• Dummy SMTP server as a service

  Hello, I have a Windows Server 2008 machine with IIS installed which is hosting a webapp that is sending some notification mails once-in-a-while. What I'd like to do is to monitor the email sent by the application. For this I need a dummy SMTP server which intercepts messages but won't send them further but save them locally on the hard disk.I've already found some of them like Papercut, SMTP4Dev. The problem with these that I have to be logged on the server all the time which is not suitable because the server has only 2+1 TS connections. I like to run a program like these as a windows service and check the mails when I need them. Any suggestion is much appreciated. Best Regards,Levente Rog

• Static IP breaks Network connection

  I am somewhat new to Linux. I am setting up a Web server and installed Ubuntu server 14.04 on an vSphere ESXi 5.5 host. I am connecting perfectly fine to the internet when using DHCP but when I apply my Static settings I loose the ability to connect to websites. Whats weird is I can Ping google.com but if I try wget gooogl.com it hangs at connecting to google.com (google.com):173.194.43.32:80 and I get "failed: connection refused" But if I am set to DHCP the connection resolves perfectly. • Default user logon on Windows Server system

  I installed Remote Desktop Services role (ex Terminal Services) on my Windows Server 2008 R2 machine. After installation when I try to logon locally, there's no default user as it used to be. Can I tweak group policy to have my default user back? I did enable to remember last logon user, but it didn't work... Obviously RDS (ex TS) ignores this policy setting. Additional note: I'm not connected to a domain. It's a standalone development machine running server OS. No domain needed for it.

• What is a descriptive name for a web service that responds with plain text?

  I'm looking for the proper name for a web service that responds with text as opposed to XML. As an example this "cardServer" service will return 5 cards for a poker hand. http://hostname:8080/cardServer/deal/Game=Poker&Qty=5 The result could look like this: Card1=Ad Card2=Kc Card3=Ts Card4=5d Card5=3d The real world example is not as trivial, but the concept is the same. Parameters if any are passed as POST variables. We currently parse the response into a string list and use the values. The process works just fine. What I'm wondering if this service method has a name that has easier tools to deal with the responses and therefore did we reinvent the wheel? For the record the service was provided and maintained by a customer.

• Remote desktop Client versus Web based access to reports and limited data entry

  We have a requirement from management to give limited access of our Application to Distributors \ Dealers to look at their account statements in our books of account, enter their purchase requirements (sales order for us). We have given a few of them the RDC who connect to our terminal server and access the reports. This involves licensing of TS Client per each distributor. Is it more better, secure and less costly if a web based application is made to only enter the orders and retrive reports like pending orders, ledgers, receivables etc. Also which is more secure as far as database access is concerened...browser based access or RDC access.   Hello, i am trying to install VS TS 2008 on W7 Ultimate (64bit), but i have run into errors during the setup. Please take note that i have tried to mount the iso to a virtual drive, and also extracted the iso contents to a local folder. Both methods have failed and produce the same error log below. • Lots of artifacts while streaming HD content with VLC 0.9.9 on CentOS

  I'm trying to stream (multicast) a x264 encoded file using VLC. This in itself succeeds, but the stream has a huge lot of artifacts. This seems to suggest that the data cannot be transported fast enough. If I check network usage, though, it's only using about 15 mbit. I have a similar SD stream which functions perfectly. I think I could improve stream performance by not streaming the raw data, but I cannot seem to get this working. It seems that on keyframes all artifacts are removed for a short while (less than a second). This is the command I use: vlc -vv hdtest.mkv --sout '#duplicate{dst=rtp{dst=ff02::1%eth1,mux=ts,port=5678,sap,group="Testgroup",name="TeststreamHD"}}' --loop Which is all one long line.

• It is inconsiderate to place editor settings inside code files?

  I know this is kind of a subjective question, but I'm curious if there's any good reason to place (or not place) editor settings inside code files. I'm thinking in vi modelines, but it is possible that this applies to other editors. In short, a vi modeline is a line inside a file that tells vi how to behave (indent with spaces or tabs, set tabwidth to X, autoindent by default or not, ...) that is placed inside a comment, so it won't affect the program/compiler when running. In a .c file it could be similar to // vim: noai:ts=4:sw=4 On one hand, I think this shouldn't be inside the file, as it is an editor setting and so belongs to an editor configuration file or property. On the other hand, for projects involving developers outside one company (that are not imposed an editor/settings) or collaborators on github/bitbucket/... it is an easy way to avoid breaking the code style (tabs vs spaces for example), but only for the ones that use that editor though. I cannot see any powerful enough reason to decide for or against this practice, so I am in doubt of what to do.

• Which universal or driverless printing solution do you use/recommend?

  I'm in need of a driverless printing solution for Microsoft Terminal Services 2003/2008. This is mainly to support clients who are connected through broadband into our hosted servers. We were hoping that MSTS 2008 thinprint would be the answer but unfortunately it performs poorly in the print area. The files are too large. I'd like a product that works/easy to install (as our clients are remote and not particularly tech savvy) and ideally I just pay for the server license and not every clients. • Auto-provisioning hosting via API

  I've built a sort of 'software as a service' website package for a specific industry. What I am looking to do is create a payment gateway that allows users to subscribe-- and once the subscription is active, it would auto-provision a web hosting plan for them (a shared account on a server, probably in a chroot'd environment so each user would be insulated from others). Ideally it would auto-install a CMS as well. Tons of web hosts provide a simple reseller plan where I could manually create all the users' hosting accounts-- but so far none that I've found allow you to do this via API. Is there a way to do this short of writing custom shell scripts on something like an EC2 platform? I'd prefer to leave all the server maintenance in the hands of dedicated support staff rather than having to manually handle updates, backups, etc. Thanks for any tips.

• How do I install a driver for a Kodak esp 3250 printer?

  First my system: pentium 4 -don't remember the speed-, 1g ram, dual boot to separate physical drives, Fdos and Lubuntu 12.1 second my lan: I have four computers operating for the same printer. Intel quad core i5, 4g ram, running Windoze 7 64 bit, printer connected and shared from here. Kodak ESP 3250 Gateway 17" laptop running Windoze 7 32bit Asus tablet (small laptop) running Lumbutu 12.1 My dual boot system running Fdos and Lubuntu 12.1 The problem: I downloaded c2esp_25c-1_i386.deb, tried to install it using DEBI Package Installer, it loads the files, looks for cups driver and ends with an error: "Dependancy is not satisfiable: libcupsdriver1 (=1.4.0)" What do I do now? Is there some place that I can get the correct cups driver? further information: The Asus tablet was running Ubuntu 12.1 (very slowly and with a few crashes) and could print from the lan printer with no problems. Is there something in Ubuntu that can be loaded into Lubuntu?

Literally just taking the credit card info and passing it to the gateway and processor. • Determining if a visitor left your server

  We have an Apache server running a PHP website. The site is an e-commerce shop. We currently use Barclays as the payment provider but are seeing a lot of customers drop out at the point at which we transfer them to the payment gateway (hosted with Barclays) I can see specific instances in the shop where orders have been created but not paid/failed but I need to ascertain if the user has definitely left our server (or just failed to reach Barclays). Is there anything in any of the server/access logs that states when a user transferred to a different domain?

• How do you create a SQL query in Excel 2007 with a dynamic date range?

  I am trying to create a reporting spreadsheet that can print reports for a given time period. The query below works, but when I try to use a "?" parameter in place of the date, I get an error after selecting a cell containing my date. If I use single quotes ('?') I get a conversion from string to date/time failure, if I don't (?) I get a syntax error near @p1. Eventually I will need either a start and end date or a formula adding a month or shift to the starting date/time to filter the data down to important information. The query was built in Microsoft Query. • WiFi, No ping, other works fine

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for my mom, this runs OK. However recently, I switched back and forth between encryptions on our WiFi Router from WPA-PSK to WEP and back again to WPA-PSK, same password. Now this old laptop won't even ping the gateway on the router, although the nm-applet shows connected. I tried re-adding the network and putting in the BSSID. I did this over again sometimes just to verify. I tried with my 3G Tethering on my phone, it works fine, can go online too. My other Linux laptop can go on the same wifi as well as my phone. And this laptop used to been online on the same network, same password, same encryption (WPA-PSK) What can be wrong ? Does it need a serious kick in the butt or removing some cached authorisation somewhere?
