• I don't get this C/C++ Joke

  After reading this article on thedailywtf.com, I'm not sure that I really got the joke. It says there that some guy changed the code from int function() { int x; char data_string[15]; ... x = 2; strcpy(data_string,"data data data"); ... } to int function() { int x = 2; char data_string[15] = "data data data"; ... } everywhere in the code and that for some reason did inflate the size of the executable from 1 to 2 CDs (or maybe it didn't do that?). Obviously I'm not familiar enough with C/C++ to get this joke, but what seems strangest is that the 2nd code listing seems "cleaner"—at least from what I've been told in school (that is that initializing variables is a good thing, not a bad one).

• Codeigniter - Is it ok to add functionality to the constructor in controllers?

  I'm making a project where I want the user to search for shops in different cities and would like the url to be like this: domain/shop/city/name. So I created a controller in codeigniter called Shop. But I cant create a city function since the city part of the url changes dependent on city name. One easy way to do it would be to add a function called "search" and add the functionality there but then I get url's like: domain/shop/search/city/name which I really would like to avoid. So my question is if it's ok to add my functionality directly into the constructor to avoid that extra "search" part in the url? I'm afraid that there might be some performance tricks involved that potentially keeps the class in memory so the constructor will not be called every time.

  Hello, I have a question related to correct handling of returns of the DAO library I'm writing for one project. This library probably is going to be used by another people and I want to do it correctly. So I would like to know, how I should deal with return statements of the functions of my DAO. Example 1 I have function to getCustomer which should return String. In case query doesn't return any result should I return null, empty string or throw some kind of Exception? Example 2 I have function getCutomerList which return ArrayList. In case query doesn't return any result should I return null, empty ArrayList or throw some Exception? Example 3 Some sql exception was detected, what should I do: throw exception or do try..catch of the block where it can occur? What is the "good" practice or "best" practice to apply in my case? • Assign bitset member to char

  I have some code here that uses bitsets to store many 1 bit values into a char. Basically struct BITS_8 { char _1:1; (...) char _8:1; } Now i was trying to pass one of these bits as a parameter into a function void func(char bit){ if(bit){ // do something }else{ // do something else } // and the call was struct BITS_8 bits; // all bits were set to 0 before bits._7 = 1; bits._8 = 1; func(bits._8); The solution was to single the bit out when calling the function: func(bits._8 & 0x128); But i kept going into //do something because other bits were set. I was wondering if this is the correct behaviour or if my compiler is broken. The compiler is an embedded compiler that produces code for freescale ASICs.

  This is very similar to a question I asked the other day but my page code has become significantly more complicated and I need to revisit it. I've been using the following code: $('#myLink').click(function() { $('#myImg').attr('src', 'newImg.jpg'); setTimeout(function() { $('#myImg').attr('src', 'oldImg.jpg'); }, 15000); }); To replace an image for a set period of time (15 seconds) when the link is clicked, then after 15 seconds, revert to the original image. However now, I'd like to run a snippet of javascript as well when the link is clicked (in addition to replacing the image), and only when the link is clicked (it's related to the 15 second image) and then have the js code disappear as well after the 15 seconds...however I'm not sure how to have jquery send js code into the page...Basically I just want jQuery to "echo" this code onto the page underneath the 15 second while I am there, but I don't know how jquery formats this "echo". Does this question make sense? interval = 500; imgsrc = "webcam/image.jpg"; function Refresh() { tmp = new Date(); tmp = "?" + tmp.getTime(); document.images["image1"].src = imgsrc + tmp; setTimeout("Refresh()", interval); } Refresh(); It's script for a webcam. Basically it takes a new picture every half a second and replaces it on the page. You must forgive me, I'm new to jquery, I don't know how to make this script work in a jquery context. i'm sorry, I'm explaining badly. This is what I need to happen, step by step: 1) User comes to the page and there is a static image that says "Click here to view webcam" 2) User clicks image 3) Image is replaced by live webcam image, which is refreshed every .5 seconds by the second script in my question. 4) After 15 seconds the live webcam reverts back to the static image saying "click here to view webcam" It is ONLY during that 15 second interval that I wan the webcam refresh script running, otherwise it's wasting bandwidth on an element that isn't even shown.   I need to run a python script on a machine that doesn't have python installed. What I did was as follows. Copy python.exe, python26.dll, msvcr90.dll and Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest zip all the directory in LIBs directory as the python26.zip copy all the necessary dll/pyd file inside the DLL directory. It seems to work, but when I change the python26.zip to the other name such as pythonlib.zip. It cannot find the python library anymore. Q1 : What's the magic behind the python26.zip name? The python automatically finds a library inside a python26.zip but not with different name? Q2 : If I have python26.zip at the same directory where python.exe/python26.dll is, I don't need to add path sys.path.append(THE PATH TO python26.zip). Is it correct?

If foo_node_info() defines two content types, namely a content type 'footypea' and a content type 'footypeb', how does one go about implementing hook_form() (what should the name of the "hook" be?) to configure each node's editing form? In the drupal example, the name of the new content type is the same as the module name. What happens in the above described example where two new content types are defined by the module? Should the implemented hook_form() function be of the form: footypea_form() and footypeb_form() ? (this doesn't seem to work) Or should you implement a single foo_form() function and within this create and return an array $form with elements $form['footypea'] and $form['footypeb'] that are in turn arrays of the individual form field definitions?

• Always require a plugin to be loaded

  I am writing an application with RequireJS and Knockout JS. The application includes an extension to knockout that adds ko.protectedObservable to the main knockout object. I would like this to always be available on the require'd knockout object, and not only when I specify it in the dependencies. I could concat the files together, but that seems that it should be unnecessary. Additionally, I can put knockout-protectedObservable as a dependency for knockout in the requirejs shim configuration, but that just leads to a circular dependency and it all fails to load.   In my project I have it set up so that all the tables in the DB has the property "id" and then I have the entity objects inherit from the EntityBase class using a repository pattern. I then set the inheritance modifier for "id" property in the dbml file o/r designer to "overrides" Public MustInherit Class EntityBase MustOverride Property id() As Integer End Class Public MustInherit Class RepositoryBase(Of T As EntityBase) Protected _Db As New DataClasses1DataContext Public Function GetById(ByVal Id As Integer) As T Return (From a In _Db.GetTable(Of T)() Where a.id = Id).SingleOrDefault End Function End Class Partial Public Class Entity1 Inherits EntityBase End Class Public Class TestRepository Inherits RepositoryBase(Of Entity1) End Class the line Return (From a In _Db.GetTable(Of T)() Where a.id = Id).SingleOrDefault however produces the error "Class member EntityBase.id is unmapped" when i use VS 2010 using the 4.0 framework but I never received that error with the old one. The only thing that lies in my stomache is how does it work with functions?   I have a project that uses PageMethods to call functions on the server. The server functions (written in C#) return the values as array of strings, without doing any kind of serialization and in the client side (from Js) the accessing of the return values is by using static variable called arguments. I found that sometimes for some users (cases are not repro) sometimes an exception occured "WebServiceFailedException the server method 'Foo' returned invalid data. the 'd' property is missing from JSON." Some searching on google I found that people are serializing the return values using DataContractJsonSerializer class and in js accessing the return value using one of the callback function Example: function OnRequestComplete(result, userContext, methodName) { var Person = eval('(' + result + ')'); alert(Person.Forename); alert(Person.Surname); } So is the first technique is correct? or what?

  I'm using sigprocmask as follows: void mask(){ sigset_t new_set,old_set; sigemptyset(&new_set); sigaddset(&new_set,SIGALRM); sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, &new_set, &old_set); } and to my surprise a function which prints a big list somehow gets interrupted by the signal, even though I invoke mask() at its beginning. It looks as if mask fails, since my function doesn't invoke any other functions and therefore nowhere in its run should an unmask() happen. What can cause sigprocmask to fail?

  I am trying to create functionality similar to drag and drop. I need to create my own as there will be some significant differences to the drag and drop in the jquery UI. I would like to have mousemove being called repeatedly at all times, and mousedown called every time the mouse is pressed. So I have the following code: $(document).bind('mousemove',function(e){ $("#coords").text("e.pageX: " + e.pageX + ", e.pageY: " + e.pageY); }); $(document).bind('mousedown',function(e){ }); ('coords' is the id of a div) As I move the mouse, coordinates are reported correctly in 'coords'. If I depress a mouse button and then move the mouse, coordinates are still reported correctly. But if I depress a mouse button on an image and then move the mouse, coordinates are reported correctly for a few sets, and then they seize up! Why is this happening and how can I fix it?   I'm surprised I can't find a clear answer to this. So, in jQuery, you can do this: $(someElements).fadeOut(1000); $(someElements).remove(); Which, will start a fadeOut animation, but before it finishes executing in the 1 second duration, the elements are removed from the DOM. But how is this possible? I keep reading the JavaScript is single threaded. ( Is javascript guaranteed to be single-threaded? ) This question is not "How do I fix this?" I know I can do either: $(someElements).fadeOut(1000).promise().done(function() { $(someElements).remove();});, or even better:$(someElements).fadeOut(1000, function() { $(this).remove(); } ); What I don't understand is how JavaScript runs in a "single thread" but I'm able to use these jQuery functions that execute asynchronously and visibly see the DOM change in different places at the same time. How does it work?
