• How do I disable/modify CPU underclocking due to temperature on a laptop with a 2nd generation core cpu?

  I am running Ubuntu 11.04 on a tablet with a Core i5-2557M processor. When doing processing intensive tasks the CPU is forcibly under-clocked to 800MHz (instead of the normal base of 1.7GHz.) The CPU temperature is around 75 C. I have disabled CPU scaling (set governor to performance) but this seems to have no effect. I would like to either modify the behavior so that the throttling happens at 95 C or I would like to disable it altogether. Changing the min/max frequency as root using cpufreq works until the temperature rises and then it ceases to work, ignoring a minimum frequency above the 800MHz. On Windows 7 there is a 3rd party utility that can do this (ThrottleStop). Thank you.

• How can I have my VPN connect automatically when the wireless connects?

  I have a working VPN connection using NetworkManager, OpenConnect, and the network-manager-openconnect-gnome package, but I have to start it manually every time I connect to a network, and I have to enter my password manually each time. How can I get it to connect automatically, and remember my password (securely)? I have checked the 'Connect Automatically' box on the Configure VPN page, but this seems to have no effect. I've also got the 'Start connecting automatically' box checked in the pop-up box, and that does avoid the need to press the connect button in that window, but seems to have no part in kicking off the whole process in the first place. There is no option to remember the password in the window, but maybe there's one somewhere else?

• Failed to install the proprietary display driver, Compiz crashed!

  ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 I was using the default open source driver with Gnome classic, but when I upgraded to the closed sourced one using jockey-gtk/additional drivers everything messed up! It failed to activate the driver. Here is the error log. Wobbly windows or any other compiz effect won't work now. I can't even move a window! I'm on Precise Pangolin, Kernel-3.2.0-31-generic-pae Please Help! :( Update: I think my driver is installed even jockey doesn't show it. Compiz effects are working in Unity desktop... but I want it on Gnome Classic.

• How do I un-zoom compiz?

  I'm using a keyboard I'm not used to, and I hit Super_L instead of Alt_L when I middle-mouse-dragged across the screen. On this Ubuntu 10.04 with Compiz, apparently, this zooms the screen to the area that I dragged across. Now I'm stuck. I can super-middle-drag across a bigger area, but apparently I can't quite hit all of the corners exactly because the screen still moves a bit when I move the mouse around. How do I undo this zoom effect completely? This looks like "EZoom", which says that super-"1" (default keybinding, anyway) should reset it, but that doesn't seem to work here. Close...

• Premultiplying matrices with Perspective destroys them

  If I apply world_to_camera, perspective and camera_to_screen to my mesh, everything is okay. But if I premultiply given matrices (i.e. transform = world_to_camera * perpective * camera_to_screen) before applying, then it seems like only perspective has effect. If it is important... My 3d framework was written from scratch (test project for job interview). But it works flawlessly, or at least I think so. So, question. This is expected behaviour, or my implementation is wrong?

• How can I customize my bootloader to make it prettier?

  I hate how when I turn on the computer it just (after the hp logo, which I hate having also), shows white text on a black background. I'm wondering if there's easy ways to customize this (I'm choosing between Windows 7 and two separate Ubuntu 10.10 installs). I've read a little about some complicated ways to do this, but is there not some simpler ways by installing a package on ubuntu or something? I don't want to hack a bunch of code together to get a simple effect. I'm hoping for actual images and having like the windows 7 logo and ubuntu logo to choose from. Ideas?

What about https:// How will this be treated? Is the redirect 301 sufficient to solve the problem? I have a SEO company that says if possible, i should not have redirect but I don't think this is visible? Does permanent redirect in any way have effect on SEO services if properly done?   I am currently in the process of redesigning a job advert site and am trying to put a lot more effort into my SEO. My question is how should I deal with the URLs that point to job adverts when the advert expires. The options I have thought of so far are: Return a 404 error and redirect to a 404 page. Will it have an effect on ranking if there are a lot of URLs that return 404s after only being up for a few weeks? Redirect to job listing page - When the user requests a URL for an advert that has expired just redirect to the main job listing page. Show the advert but tell the user to has closed - Show the advert page but with a notification that the advert has closed. The issue I see with this is that the user will visit the page, see its closed and then leave the site again which would not be good for rankings

• How to give parallax backgrounds more depth

  I have 3 tiled images of some sort of galaxy/space in the background of a 2D Game: The first one has an alpha of 100%, the second an alpha of 80% and the last one has an alpha of 60%. I scroll the the one in the background slower than the other ones of course. classic parallax. In the foreground I have some particles flying towards the player to simulate some dust / stars flying by. (I know that stars don't fly by, but I think we all have seen this in a lot of games). But I can't quite achieve the depth effect I am looking for. I want it to look "deeper". I did read something about using blending modes for the backgrounds, but that would require to render them as objects right? So the question is: What is a good technique to do a scrolling parallax background in GameMaker?

  In pavucontrol, I can choose between RV620 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 3400 Series] and Built-in Audio. When the former is enabled, videos on (among others) Youtube play way too fast, but this answer solved my problem (though I don't know why). However, when I use Built-in Audio instead of RV620 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 3400 Series], the mixer in my applet appears to be disabled; the icon is replaced by a blank and changing the volume has no effect, as the applet apparently only relays to RV620 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 3400 Series]. How do I get an applet to control the volume for Built-in Audio instead?

• how to change dolphin's select region of a file/folder (in detail view mode)

  Since nautilus has removed the dual pane. So I turn to dolphin. I am wondering how to change the default select behavior in detail view mode? Now to select a file/folder, my cursor has to hover over that file/folder and then the left click will take effect, but I much prefer the nautilus way, that is as long as your cursor is in the same row of that file/folder, left click picks up that item. This I think is more robust for user selection, it is faster. Any ideas how to achieve this in dolphin?

• LibreOffice prints everything half size

  Ever since I printed a document from Evince in landscape orientation, LibreOffice Calc / Writer refuses to print anything correctly. It is scaling everything by 0.5x and rotating it. To get the same effect, go to print - page layout tab - pages per sheet = 2. However, I don't want 2. I want 1. I have wizzed through all of the printing options a few times but can't get to the bottom of this. I've restarted my printer and computer several times. I have done sudo apt-get purge libreoffice* and reinstalled again. Still it will not print full size. (Of course I have checked that the page settings are set to A4 and portrait.) Update: this problem is specific to one printer only, to printing from within LibreOffice (Calc, Writer). With other printers / programs I have no problems.

  Google has led many useful Java features (guava, gson); now that Oracle has purchased Sun will it effect its future enhancements and utilization as a development language. What exactly, or even approximately, are the legal ramifications? I thought Java was open source and would therefore remain unaffected ... ? Should Google just buy Oracle to get rid of the whole mess, that would be cool wouldn't it ? Do you think this is the beginning of the end for Java as a widely used language ? Its continued success as an open source/free technology is now doubtful?

• Multi Column Block Too Narrow in Chrome

  My Web site displays song lyrics in a multi-column format, using CSS3. Both Firefox & MSIE 10+ display the multi-column text perfectly, but Chrome does not. This sample page shows the problem: http://www.hymntime.com/tch/test/html5/html5-multicolumn-test.htm The page uses a media selector, so your Chrome window must be at least 1280 pixels wide to see the effect. In fact, if you make the Chrome window less than 1280 pixels, you'll see the lyrics block change to a single column, of the same overall width. In other words, when Chrome shifts to 1-column to 2-column mode (due to the wider browser window), the lyrics block remains the same width, causing text to be squeezed together. Has anyone else seen this behavior, or know a solution? Is this a Chrome bug, or I am I doing something wrong? I posted this question on a Chrome forum a while back, but got no reply.

  I am an iOS developer but I'm new to cocos2d. I'm working on new game, I use Kobold2D, have cocos2d installed too, and I want to make this effect: I know how is done with Flash, but can't make it with Kobold2D. There's 2 images with the same size: one is a low-res image for the background and the second is a hi-res over the first one. When the "reticle" mask moves, it reveals the second image inside the circle and the background is visible outside only. I googled with no success, saw some Ray Wenderlich projects they weren't helpful.

• Figuring out what object is closer to a certain point?

  I'm trying to create fog of war, I have the visual effect created but I'm not sure how to deal with the hiding of other players if they're within the fog of war. So right now the thing I'm trying to do is if another player is hiding behind a wall then not to render that player. I was thinking of doing it by sending a ray in the direction of all the players, and then creating a list of all the obstacles that ray collides with and then trying to figure out if an obstacle was closer than the player in order to predict the distance. But then I realized I'm not really sure how to figure out if the obstacle is infact closer or not because I have to account for all the dimensions, so I'm kind of stuck. First of all is this approach the correct way to go about it and secondly how would I calculate if the obstacle was infact closer taking into account the X Y and Z. Thanks

• Gtk theme change doesn't apply to kde apps?

  I changed the systemwide ambiance theme a bit (specifically the scrollbar css), and this works fine in gtk apps, but in kde apps nothing has changed. They still have the vanilla ambiance look. I tried rebooting too. Btw I've disabled overlay scrollbars. I looked at this question: Why don't Qt4 apps in Lubuntu pick up the GTK theme? and tried setting the Gtk+ theme in qtconfig but that didn't help. The look remains the same. Changing the theme in qtconfig to another one, such as QtCurve, does have an effect though.

• FBO rendering different result between Glaxay S2 and S3

  I'm working on a pong game and have recently set up FBO rendering so that I can apply some post-processing shaders. This proceeds as so: Bind texture A to framebuffer Draw balls Bind texture B to framebuffer Draw texture A using fade shader on fullscreen quad Bind screen to framebuffer Draw texture B using normal textured quad shader Neither texture A or B are cleared at any point, this way the balls leave trails on screen, see below for the fade shader. • Bukkit send a custom placed name plate?

  Hello i have been working on a part of my plugin that has waypoints allowing the user to create delete etc. I got to thinking after using and seeing a couple of the disguse plugins. That maybe i could create a command toggle that would show the user where the waypoints they have are! I know how to do all of this i just have no idea how to display a nameplate to the client. I know its possible because disguisecraft does it i tried looking though their code but couldent find much... I belive to get this effect i need to send packets to the client if someone can direct me to a list of bukkit packets or even a solution to sending the client a custom located nameplate that would be fantastic!   Just to be straightforward, I am completely new to many aspects of coding and am searching for different specs and guidelines to aid me on my journey to crafting a wonderful game in Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4. I had some recent thoughts about the possibility of creating an environment in a game that interacts with weather (Rain, Snow, Storms) Is it possible to make an environment that can simulate weather changes in a game? I wrote notes on this for weeks now. I was thinking that an increase on environments occlusion maps was necessary for creating the effect of rain on windows, as well as making a flowing liquid surface on windows that is only visible in rain. I was also considering the idea of additive bump-maps on meshes for snow, to simulate accumulation. Are these elements dynamic in Unreal 4? Can I implement them?

• Clone User Profile with Encrypted Home Folder

  I'd like to clone my user profile on my local machine. I'd like to do so, just to keep all the preferences and not to have to redefine all of them manually. I've tried this, but when I login, it will just return to KDM login screen. BTW I'm using Kubuntu 14.04. What might be interesting: I have encrypted my home folder. Does this make any difference? • Disqus 2012 comments NOT being indexed by Google

  We run a high-traffic website at http://www.onedirection.net and we've been using Disqus throughout this year, initially to great effect. We accepted the upgrade to Disqus 2012 back in June, loving the increased user experience and the better community feel - albeit back to an Iframe again. However the fact we were specifically told that the comments are now being indexed by Google was great, and the dynamic nature of the iFrame suited our site (all our pages are cached, so by using Disqus the comments are updated straight away). However, it seems that the Disqus 2012 comments are not being indexed, and we've noticed an obvious fall in traffic over the last few months. Initially we didn't put this down to Disqus and focused on other issues (Google algorithm updates etc). But we're quickly coming down the reasoning that our pages now contain less indexable text, and we are getting less traffic because of this. We've tried emailing Disqus directly but they're very slow and don't seem keen to help. Any thoughts on this?

• Cron doesn't execute one of the scheduled jobs

  I'm using a lubuntu desktop, distribution Ubuntu 13.10, i686. This is my problem: in the job list scheduled by cron a job hasn't effect, but in /var/log/syslog its execution is traced. This is the relative log line: Jun 4 09:06:01 kiosk CRON[14189]: (root) CMD (/usr/bin/xinput set-prop 12 --type=float "Coordinate Transformation Matrix" 0 -1 1 1 0 0 0 0 1 /tmp/mybackup.log) This job should rotate touchscreen mapping. I try different solutions: I substitute in crontab the with bash -c "", I set "export DISPLAY=:0.0" ("for Graphics related job in Unix Environment we need to set first the DISPLAY...") before the command,...and many other! I know there are a lots of details affect cron execution (path, environment variables, special character and other) and I have no more idea by now :( Could some gentleman suggest me an idea? where can I find the problem? • Faking Display tree (Sprite) parent child relationships with rasters (BitmapData) in ActionScript 3

  I am working with Rasters (bitmapData) and blliting (copypixels) in a 2d-game in actionscript 3. I like how you can move a sprite and it moves all it's children, and you can simultaneously move the children creating an interesting visual effect. I do not want to use rotation or scaling however cause I do not know how that can be done without hampering with performance. So I'm not simulating Sprite parent-child behavior and sticking to the movement on the (x, y) axis. What I am planning to do is create a class called RasterContainer which extends bitmapData that has a vector of children of type Raster(extending bitmapData), now I am planning to implement recursive rendering in RasterContainer, that basically copyPixels every child, only changing their (x, y) offset to reflect their parent's offset. My question is, has this been implemented in an existing framework? Is this a good plan? Do I expect a serious performance hit for using recursive methods this way?
