• Co-opt popular abandonware opensource project?

  Here's the scenario: A popular open source project is used/loved by many but has become stale due to the fact that the last drop came out nearly a year ago. Many bugs/feature requests/fixes have been logged in the interim and everyone is getting by via downloading the trunk and building custom/private builds with the changes incorporated. The copyright is simple -- there is none and the code is in the public domain. The project owner spins the project as community open source and has set up a sourceforge site, but to date (5 years running now) has yet to accept one contributor. In other words the "community" is a community of one. The project owner takes great pride in the project and has obviously contributed a lot of time/effort but for whatever reason has has seemingly abandoned the project and is unresponsive when offers of help are made. So, the question, should the community fork the codebase, set up a new community site, and take matters in their own hands?

  I am trying to import a function from a c dll into C#. The c function looks like this unsigned short write_buffer( unsigned short device_number, unsigned short word_count, unsigned long buffer_link, unsigned short* buffer) my attempt at a C# import looks like this [DllImport("sslib32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Ansi, SetLastError = true)] private static extern ushort write_buffer(ushort deviceNumber, ushort wordCount, UInt32 bufferLink, IntPtr buffer) In C# i have a Dictionary of messages that i would like to pass to this function. The Dictionary looks like this: Dictionary<string, List<ushort>> msgs I am a bit confused how to make a make a proper call to pass msgs as the buffer. deviceNumber is 2, wordCount is 32, and buffLink is 0. So i know the call should look something like this write_buffer(2,32,0, msgs[key]); Obviously i am getting an invalid argument for the IntPtr. What is the proper way to make this call?

• Java-Recursion: When does statements after a recursive method call executes

  When are statements after the method call itself going to execute? private void inorderHelper(TreeNode node) { if ( node==null ) return; inorderHelper(node.leftNode); System.out.printf("%d", node.data); inorderHelper(node.rigthNode); } All I can see is that the line of codes inorderHelper(node.leftNode) will continue to iterate until node == null and the method terminates immediately before node.data is printed. I think that I didn't get well recursion but all examples I can find doesn't have statements after the recursive call. All I want to know is when are statements like System.out.printf("%d",node.data) going to execute before the method return?

  I read about lock, though not understood nothing at all. My question is why do we use a un-used object and lock that and how this makes something thread-safe or how this helps in multi-threading ?   hi, I've a parent (Canvas) with many children (LinkButtons) The linkButtons trigger an event to communicate between them: dispatchEvent(new SameBookmarkEvent("SameBookmarkEvent", bookmark.name)); and all linkButtons have a listener this.addEventListener("SameBookmarkEvent", highlightMe); ... private function highlightMe(e:SameBookmarkEvent):void { //do something } Now, the issue is that the event is only listened by the dispatcher child. In other words, only the child triggering the event, is receiving it. I was wondering what's wrong with it, and if I should add a listener to the parent (Canvas)... I basically need the children (LinkButton) communicate between them

• Controling the visibility of a Bitmap in .NET

  Hi everyone, I am trying to create this simple application in c#: when the user double clicks on specific location in the form, a little circle will be drawn. By one click, if the current location is marked by a circle - the circle will be removed. I am trying to do this by simply register the MouseDoubleClick and MouseClick events, and to draw the circle from a .bmp file the following way: private void MouseDoubleClick (object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { Graphics g = this.CreateGraphics(); Bitmap myImage = (Bitmap)Bitmap.FromFile("Circle.bmp"); g.DrawImage(myImage, e.X, e.Y); } My problem is that I dont know how to make the circle unvisible when the user clicks its location: I know how to check if the selected location contains a circle (by managing a list of all the locations containig circles...), but I dont know how exactly to delete it. Another question: should I call the method this.CreateGraphics() everytime the user double-clicks a location, as I wrote in my code snippet, or should I call it once on initialization?

However, I was just wondering if this is the correct approach? Or if there was a better way?

• Protect value from changies using reflection?

  Hi, here is the problem case i am writing a little third party library. In this library i have a class like this public class TestClass { public int TestField { get; private set; } public TestClass( ) { TestField = 1; } } Then i have a varialbe form this class like this public TestClass test = new TestClass( ); The problem i am facing is that usnig reflection like this PropertyInfo field = typeof( TestClass ).GetProperty( "TestField" ); field.SetValue( test, 2, null ); programers can change internal value of this class. this will be very bad thing becouse it can crash the hole library. My question is what is the best way to protect my code form such changes.I know i can use some kind of bool flag so tha value can be changed only ones but this is not very good salution is there a better one? • Where do you put non-controller classes in codeigniter?

  I've got a class Widgets. Widgets are made up of Doohickies. I'm never going to need to access Doohickies directly via url -- they're essentially a private class, only used by Widgets. Where do you put your code to define the Doohicky class? In /app/controllers/doohicky.php? in app/controllers/widget.php? somewhere else? Obviously, the former seems cleaner, but it's not obvious to me how to make the Doohicky class available to Widget.

Is there some kind of magic going on in the C# world that doesn't exist in C++/CLI that allows that cast to work? Some kind of magic anonymous delegate? Thanks.

Question: Can I some how set FlushMode to ALWAYS in session factory or somewhere else to avoid repeating session.flush() call? All DB calls in DAO goes with HibernateTemplate instance. • Java Thread Message Passing

  I'm writing an Android app. I have a main method, which creates and runs a new Thread using an anonymous inner Runnable class. The run() method, when it's done, calls a method on it's parent class (in the main thread) that calls notifyDataSetChanged() so that the main thread can redraw the new data. This is causing all kinds of trouble (ViewRoot$CalledFromWrongThreadException). The thing is, this method being called from the worker thread is on the class that's created in the UI thread. Shouldn't that be running on the UI thread? Or am I missing something?   I have a byte array that I'm encoding to a string: Private Function GetKey() As String Dim ba() As Byte = {&H47, &H43, &H44, &H53, &H79, &H73, &H74, &H65, &H6D, &H73, &H89, &HA, &H1, &H32, &H31, &H36} Dim strReturn As String = Encoding.ASCII.GetString(ba) Return strReturn End Function Then I write that to a file via IO.File.AppendAllText. If I open that file in 010 Editor (to view the binary data) it displays as this: 47 43 44 53 79 73 74 65 6D 73 3F 0A 01 32 31 36 The original byte array contained 89 at position 11, and the encoded string contains 3F. If I change my encoding to Encoding.Default.GetString, it gives me: 47 43 44 53 79 73 74 65 6D 73 E2 80 B0 0A 01 32 31 36 Any help would be much appreciated!

  i have defined a method called 'search' in my RecipesController which is not private. in routes.rb i have the following: map.connect 'recipes/search', :controller => :recipes, :action => :search i get the following error: No action responded to search. Actions: ... where my method 'search' does not appear in the actions list. if i change the method name from 'search' to 'searchthings' and the action in routes to 'searchthings' then this seems to work. what am i missing here?

  Is it possible to raise built-in MS Access form events programmatically? I have a feeling it isn't but thought I would check. (I am using Access 2003). For instance, I want to do something like this within a private sub on the form: RaiseEvent Delete(Cancel) and have it trigger the Access.Form delete event -- i.e. without actually deleting a bound record. Note my delete event is not handled by the form itself but by an external class, so I can't simply call Form_Delete(Cancel).

I can see relations (drawn lines) between superclass and subclasses. However, i cannot see relations between objects inside objects (composition/aggregation/association)? The iPhone app will use GET or POST to retrieve data from the web services such as http://www.myserver.com/api/top10songs.json to get data for top ten songs for example. There is no user account and password for the iPhone app. What is the best practice to ensure that only my iPhone app have access to the web API http://www.myserver.com/api/top10songs.json? iPhone SDK's UIDevice uniqueueIdentifier is not sufficient as anyone can fake the device id as parameter making the API call using wget, curl or web browsers. The web services API will not be published. The data of the web services is not secret and private, I just want to prevent abuse as there are also API to write some data to the server such as usage log.

• WPF C#: Starting crash due to client 'Region and Language' settings

  Hi, I'm working on a WPF C# application, and it seems to crash with a few random people. So eventually I found out it was the 'Region and Language' settings that was responsible. For example, if I were to set my Format to English (United States) it will work, if I set it to Swedish (Sweden) it will crash from the start. When I test this in Visual Studio 2010 it gives error 'TypeInitializationException'. More precisely it does it here (it doesn't get passed the InitializeComponent() void): private void RadioButton_Checked(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { Info.SortOrder = SortBy.Rank; } It claims the error at the first line, which is just setting an enum value to a variable. I guess it's just doing it there because it's the first thing it makes, or something. Anyone has any idea how to fix this? I've searched around but can't seem to find out how :( Any help is much appreciated! Thanks
