  • Using the masters method

    On my midterm I had the problem: t(n) = 8T(n/2) +n^3 and I am supposed to find its big theta notation using either the masters or alternative method. So what i did was a = 8, b = 2 k = 3 log8 (base 2) = 3 = k therefore, T(n) is big theta n^3. I got 1/3 points so i must be wrong. What did I do wrong?

Here are some related questions I am thinking about: How to cleanly handle the reference comparison? Should it be implemented through a IEquatable<T>-like interface? Or overriding object.Equals? And what about the != operator? (this list might not be exhaustive).

    I'm looking for a way to set a selection in a textarea in Internet Explorer. In other browsers, this works just fine: textarea.selectionStart = start; textarea.selectionEnd = end; In IE, I assume I have to use createRange and adjust the selection somehow, but I cannot figure out how. Extra bonus points for a link to a proper documentation about createRange and associated methods, MSDN isn't helping out much.

    I am trying to load properties from a file (test.properties) The code I use is as follows: URL url = getClass().getResource("../resources/test.properties"); properties.load(url.openStream()); But when executing the second line I get a NPE. (null pointer exception) I'm not sure what's wrong here... I have checked that the file exists at the location where URL points to... Any help is appreciated....

  • How to validate a Singaporean FIN?

    Can anyone provide an algorithm to validate a Singaporean FIN? I know with a Singaporean NRIC I can validate it via modulo 11 and then compare the result to a lookup table but cannot find a similar lookup table for the FIN. I also do not know for sure if the modulo 11 is the correct method to validate. I am aware the government sells a algorithm for $400 but maybe someone knows a cheaper way. Bonus points for c# implementation.

  • sanitation script in php for login credentials...

    What I am looking for currently is a simple, basic, login credentials sanitation script. I understand that I make a function to do so and I have one...but all it does right now is strip tags... am I doomed to use replace? or is there a way i can just remove all special characters and spaces and limit it to only letters and numbers...then as for the password limit it to only letters and numbers exclimation points, periods, and other special chars that cannot affect my SQL query.     I have an asp.net app that uses System.IO.Path.GetTempFileName() for temporary files. In the production IIS environment (W2K3), the temp folder (System.IO.Path.GetTempPath()) points to C:\Windows\Temp. But on my XP dev machine it's C:\documents and settings\machinename\ASPNET\temp. Is it possible to change this folder without affecting other accounts on my machine?

  • Detect similar sounding words in Ruby

    I'm aware of SOUNDEX and (double) Metaphone, but these don't let me test for the similarity of words as a whole - for example "Hi" sounds very similar to "Bye", but both of these methods will mark them as completely different. Are there any libraries in Ruby, or any methods you know of, that are capable of determining the similarity between two words? (Either a boolean is/isn't similar, or numerical 40% similar) edit: Extra bonus points if there is an easy method to 'drop in' a different dialect or language!
