  • Database of common translated phrases for localization?

    I'd like to localize my app into a few other languages, all of which I can barely order a drink in. Does anyone know of an online resource for translations of common software menu options, messages, etc. into other languages? Given the number of developers (both OSS and closed-source) that deal with localization, and the overlap of resource strings between, it seems like a pretty obvious fit for a wiki or open source package, but I can't seem to find anything like this. I could try to mine the Windows resource files or dig around in resource strings in robust OSS apps like Firefox, but I suspect I'm not the first person to think of this and surely there is a site that I'm just not finding yet. Update: since nothing exists like this that I could find, I started a feeble attempt at an open-source string library.   • Rails: translations for table's column.

    In rails application I have two models: Food and Drink. Both food and drink have a name, which has to be stored in two languages. How do I better realize translations for theese tables? First solution I realized was to replace name column with name_en and name_ru. Another solution is to encode with YAML hash like { :en => 'eng', :ru => 'rus' } and store yaml as a name. What would you recommend, assuming content is not static? Maybe there's good article?

  • Translate XSD element names to English

    I have an XML Schema Definition file .XSD who's elements are in Spanish. I have an XML data file that is also in Spanish that matches the schema definition. I created a dataset from the xsd using xsd.exe and I'm loading the XML into the dataset. I want to translate the element names to English. I can think of two options off the top of my head. Either scrape the XSD & XML files and translate the elements prior to generating the dataset with esd.exe, or iterate the dataset after I have loaded it with the xml, and translate my objects. I do have a written document that provides the English names for every element name in Spanish. The problem is there are hundreds of elements and I was trying to avoid coding that manually. Getting precise translations is not that important, it just needs to be readable by an English speaking person. Here is an example of what an element may look like "Apellidos": <xs:element name="Apellidos" type="xs:string"/> that I will translate to "SirName": <xs:element name="SirName" type="xs:string"/> I'm looking for ideas and or opinions on a quick way to do this. It's a one time deal so I'm not working about it scaling or being functional for things other than this single xml file. I'll be taking this dataset and writing out a flat file for English speaking users to read.

  • How can you calculate the X/Y coordinate to zoom to

    Im writing a WPF application that has a zoom and pan ability, but what I want to also implement is the ability to zoom and pan "automatically" (via a button click). I have the methods all defined to zoom and pan, but Im having trouble telling the app the desired X/Y coordinates for the panning. Basically, I know that I want the control to be centered at a desired zoom level (say zoomed in 6X times), but the panning destination point is NOT the center point of the control because after the zooming, its been scaled. Does anyone know a way of calculating the desired X/Y position to pan to, taking into account the zooming as well? Do I just scale the desired destination Point? It doesnt seem to work for me...   • Using Inch or cm/mm from metric system for americans and canadians?

    We're developing an international product that displays a ruler to the user. Now in Germany and many other countries its of course common to use the metric system: cm or mm. I'm aware that americans and canadians (and maybe others too) do still use inches, feet and yards. So the question is: will todays americans (and other inch-country-citizens) understand the metric system and take it for granted - or do they still love their inches so much that they'd rather die than use a product with incorrect measurements? ( sorry for being blunt ;) )

  • WPF Animate a Matrix using interpolation

    I'm having a issue with my application that is using touch gestures to scale, translate and rotate my scene. I was using a TransformGroup which contained TranslateTransform, ScaleTransform and a RotateTransform but I could not get the movement correct, it always jumps and skips, so I moved to a MaxtrixTransform which I was able to use much easier to get my scene to be zoomable, rotatable and panable nicely. However, what I later found out was that you cannot animate smoothly (using interpolation) the values of a Matrix, for what reason I have no idea, but its part of the MSDN doco and the properties of the Matrix are not dependency properties anyways... Has anyone had any luck animating a matrix to make it smooth? The only idea(s) I have had is to animate a few different, custom DP which all have callbacks that I update the matrix from OR To convert the matrix to a set of Transform objects that I then animate and then afterwords convert back. Is there a smarter way to do this?

Is there a technical and copyright friendly way to query services like Google's Translator Toolkit, LaunchPad, Mygengo, etc. to find translations for common strings? Thank you, Malcolm

  • Converting numbers to their language, how?

    Ok, I'm using mathematical equations to output numbers, though, I need this to be compatible for all languages. Currently, all language strings are within a php array called $txt, and each key of the array gets called for that language. I'm outputting the following: Column 1, Column 2, Column 3, and so on, as well as Row 1, Row 2, Row 3, and so on. The calculations are done via php and javascript, so I'm wondering on the best approach for how to support all languages for the numbers only. I don't do the translations, someone else does, but I need to be able to point it to, either the php variable $txt of where the language is defined, or, since the calculations are done via javascript also, I need to somehow store this in there. But when I started to work on Arabic and Hebrew languages, I noticed all pages messed up after dir="rtl" to html tag (according to instructions on http://www.w3.org/International/tutorials/bidi-xhtml/) Does that mean I need separate stylesheets for right-to-left languages?

    I have many ymls in my rails app, and i want to put some of them in other service, so that i can call this from multiple places. the response of this call will be a hash. {"en" : {"test" : {"text1" : "hi english"}, {"text2" : "mambo number %{num}"} }, "es" : {"test" : {"text1" : "hi espaniol"}, {"text2" : "mamboes numeros %{num}"} } } is there a way i can load that hash into I18n translations like I18n.add_translations(some_hash) so i can access them with I18n.t("test.text1") I18n.t("test.text2", :num => 5) how can i achieve it?

    Hey all, I have multilanguage site, which have 3 languages. I'm using Username as field for First and Last name combined, and some Profile(core module) fields for example biography text field. So I want to translate Username and Profile fields in each language. I have tested it with i18n, it is not working with username and profile text field. So if Username problem I can use profile text fields for First and Last name. But no one module is providing localization support for Profile fields. Any suggestions? Thank you

  • What's the smartest way to organize SVN for translated versions of the same project?

    I apologize because I know this has been covered over and over again, but I'm trying to understand the smartest way to cleverly use subversion to our benefit. (*Note: I know our method is not the BEST way to handle localized versions, but external factors are forcing us to work this way on current projects) We have a fairly static website in English...html, css, js, etc. After the site comes back from the translator we will have 5 variations of the same code (this week...then potentially 25 more in the future!). So we'll soon have a folder for EN, FR, SP, DE, etc. Most files (css, js, img) will remain exactly the same; and html files (structure, id's, classes) will only vary based on the localized text inside the elements. Is there any way to use clever SVN folder structuring that would help us out in the event that if a small change is needed, we don't have to manually change the files in each and every translated version of the site?     An example: $this-Parent-Behaviors-attach('Containable'); $parent = $this->Parent->find('first', array( 'contain' => array('Child' => array( 'order' => 'Child.order ASC', )), 'conditions' => array('Parent.id' => $parentId) ) ); Child has translated data and parent isn't using translatable. When I fetch the child data this way it's not translated. Is Translatable (and also SmoothTranslate) working with Containable? What solutions would you guys recommend? Thanks in advance

    We're evaluating Babel 0.9.5 [1] under Windows for use with Python 2.6 and have the following questions that we we've been unable to answer through reading the documentation or googling. 1) I would like to use an _ like abbreviation for ungettext. Is there a concencus on whether one should use n_ or N_ for this? n_ does not appear to work. Babel does not extract text. N_ appears to partially work. Babel extracts text like it does for gettext, but does not format for ngettext (missing plural argument and msgstr[ n ].) 2) Is there a way to set the initial msgstr fields like the following when creating a POT file? I suspect there may be a way to do this via Babel cfg files, but I've been unable to find documentation on the Babel cfg file format. "Project-Id-Version: PROJECT VERSION\n" "Language-Team: en_US \n" 3) Is there a way to preserve 'obsolete' msgid/msgstr's in our PO files?
