  • Windows Server 2008 R2 elevated explorer

    On Windows Server 2008 R2 with the User Account Control Settings at the third highest level when you start explorer 'as administrator' it doesnt appear to actually grant administrative rights to the process. Is there a way to leave UAC at that level AND be able to start an explorer process as a 'real' administrator?

  • I/O intensive MySql server on Amazon AWS

    We recently moved from a traditional Data Center to cloud computing on AWS. We are developing a product in partnership with another company, and we need to create a database server for the product we'll release. I have been using Amazon Web Services for the past 3 years, but this is the first time I received a spec with this very specific hardware configuration. I know there are trade-offs and that real hardware will always be faster than virtual machines, and knowing that fact forehand, what would you recommend? 1) Amazon EC2? 2) Amazon RDS? 3) Something else? 4) Forget it baby, stick to the real hardware Here is the hardware requirements This server will be focused on I/O and MySQL for the statistics, memory size and disk space for the images hosting. Server 1 I/O The very main part on this server will be I/O processing, FusionIO cards have proven themselves extremely efficient, this is currently the best you can have in this domain. o Fusion ioDrive2 MLC 365GB (http://www.fusionio.com/load/-media-/1m66wu/docsLibrary/FIO_ioDrive2_Datasheet.pdf) CPU MySQL will use less CPU cores than Apache but it will use them very hard, the E7 family has 30M Cache L3 wichi provide boost performance : o 1x Intel E7-2870 will be ok. Storage SAS will be good enough in terms of performance, especially considering the space required. o RAID 10 of 4 x SAS 10k or 15k for a total available space of 512 GB. Memory o 64 GB minimum is required on this server considering the size of the statistics database. Warning: the statistics database will grow quickly, if possible consider starting with 128 GB directly, it will help.   • Glassfish installation error: cannot open display

    When trying to extract the Glassfish jar file with java -Xmx256m -jar glassfish-installer-v2.1-b60e-linux.jar i get following error: (.:31766): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: and extraction doesn't happen. It somehow assumes i'm on an real machine rather on a SSH shell. How can i solve this?

  • Common and maximum number of virtual machines per server?

    For a project I am trying to get real-life estimates for the number of virtual machines per server, both typically and maximally. Of course, the maximum number of VMs would be depending on the type of applications (disk intensive, network intensive, ...), and server hardware (like number of cores, memory, ...), but still it would be useful to know if a typical maximum is about 10, 20 or 30 VMs per server. Can anybody give practical numbers?

  • Looking for a AutoZoom browser plugin

    I have a pretty large 24" wide screen with a pretty high resolution. When I browse, some sites have a fixed layout and there is basically a narrow column. So I typically zoom in to the point just before the level where I have to scroll horizontally. Is there a browser plugin that auto-zooms in (or via a button or gesture or whatever) to the max available real estate? I'd prefer a plugin for Chrome, but Firefox will do too.

    In my web application I need to extract the real ip address for clients behind proxy, after searching I found that the possible method to do that is to read the content of "X_FORWARDED_FOR" header , I am using java servlet and the headers of the incoming request doesn't contain "X_FORWARDED_FOR" header , So why the header doesn't included in the request? I am using java 1.7 , tomcat v7 , proxy server :TMG and configured to use "X_FORWARDED_FOR" header . Please advice. Thanks in advance.

  • CPU/Mem/Disk utilization (average) after process has completed

    Ubuntu Server 9.10 So there is the time command which will show you the time it took for a specific process/command to run after the command has completed. For example: :~$ time ls real 0m0.020s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.000s I'd like to also collect the average CPU usage, Memory, and Disk (i/o) utilization after the process has completed using time (or another command if necessary). How can I accomplish this? Mainly I am using this to benchmark MySQL import performance using different innodb_buffer_pool_size settings.

    So, I just got a new ENUTV-2 USB TV Tuner Box, and it works fine overall. The driver seems to be OK, but the utility provided by encore doesn't seem to be working 100% in win 7.   • Tons Of rpc.idmapd errors in syslog

    I am growing weary of some error messages in my syslog - its showing: Jul 3 15:16:38 web rpc.idmapd[14535]: nss_getpwnam: name 'nobody' does not map into domain 'mydomain.com' I have check, my hostname is correct as mydomain.com and I even added a valid entry in /etc/hostname . I have edited my /etc/idmapd.conf to reflect this domain name, this error message log every 10minutes and its becoming frustrating, I do not know why or whats causing it, the nfs server is working ok, with correct entries and now message in the log. I am using centos6 -- Ofcoure, i have substituted mydomain.com with my real domain

  • Avoid linux out-of-memory application teardown

    I'm finding that on occasion my Linux box runs out of memory and it starts tearing down random processes to deal with it. I'm curious what administrators do to avoid this? Is the only real solution to up the amount of memory (will upping the swap alone help?), or is there better ways to set up the box with software to avoid this? (i.e., quotas, or some such?). This is to compute a true total cost of ownership of self-hosting servers. Of course real TCO includes: hardware_cost + power + cooling + rental + human_cost + maintenance Is there any study that says something like (TCO - hardware_cost) = 40% of hardware_cost in 3 years?
