• Windows 7 randomly installs an "Unknown Device" successfully

  Rarely (several days to weeks between occurrences,) and seemingly at random, I get a balloon notification from Windows 7 (x64 SP1 Home Premium) that it is installing hardware for me. Whatever is being installed does so without error. However, no new hardware has been installed or plugged in! When I click the balloon it doesn't give me any useful information: Looking in the event log, I find this entry: Event ID: 20001 Source: UserPnp Task Category: 7005 Message: Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\usb.inf_amd64_neutral_153b489118ee37b8\usb.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\6&3AF9A177&0&0060&&02 with the following status: 0x0. It appears to be USB related. My motherboard has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 controllers. My keyboard and mouse are plugged into the 2.0 slots and the data/recharge cable for a tablet (but not the tablet itself) was plugged in to the 3.0 slot. No other USB devices have been attached for several days/reboots. Why is Windows doing this?

• Juniper Networks SRX240 as a office router?

  We're a small (7 person) fast growing startup who just got our new office and we're having a 100 Mbps line installed from Cogent. I'm not familiar with Juniper devices, however the equivalent Cisco appears to be rather expensive. Features we'd like: Offsite VPN access (PPTP or L2TP IPsec) - something Mac compatible IPv6 support NAT - ideally supporting multiple outside addresses mapped to VLANs DHCP DNS forwarding would be nice QoS to keep our SIP phones happy (managed through RingCentral) VLANs for guest/internal The device is going to be connected to a set of SIP phones as well as two Ruckus 7962s for wireless access. Eventually I'd like to connect it to a Juniper ESX switch as we grow. Would a Juniper SRX240 handle this ok?

• taskmgr.exe 100% CPU Usage

  Hi. I have 2 IBM servers Intel Xeon Dual core with 2gb RAM. the problem is that Taskmanager uses one full core when i open it. The same happens when i copy files in the explorer. OS: Windows 2003 Server Things i tried: Installed all updates They has kaspersky anti virus and they previously had Nod32. All drivers installed OK. All unused devices are disabled in the bios. Reinstalled win 2003 SP2. No conflict in drivers Tried opening via remote desktop and the problem continues. • How can I get VirtualBox Guest Additions installed in an Ubuntu 9.10 server?

  I have a freshly installed Ubuntu 9.10 server installed within a VirtualBox VM instance. From the VirtualBox menu bar, I selected Devices: Install Guest Additions... Then performed the following commands: > sudo apt-get install -y build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) > sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/ > sudo /mnt/VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run After some successful looking results, the following error is displayed: Installing the Window System drivers ...fail! (Could not find the X.Org or XFree86 Window System.) After restarting, I was looking forward to some UI integration with my host desktop (resize window, not needing to press right-Ctrl to escape the client window, and having copy and paste functionality. Is it possible to install the Guest Additions without the X Window overhead (I plan to only use for shell commands)? If additional packages are required, which ones?

• Connecting to Aerohive APs from Laptops running Win. 7 using authentication from a Windows 2008 domain server

  I have deployed a wireless network using Aerohive access points. 2 of them are set up as radius servers. I want my users to be able to use the same user name and password they use when they log onto our domain. They are able to do this from android devices or computers running Windows 8. It will not work on Windows 7 machines. How do I remedy this situation, keeping in mind that the machines are personal machines not company owned and I will have no way to change their hardware or software.

• Wi-Fi performance in Windows 8 RP on a MacBook Air (mid 2011)

  I was able to install the Boot Camp Windows software using the executable that it provided, and there are no unrecognized or unknown devices in Device Manager. Wi-Fi works but it seems to be limited to an extremely slow 1.5Mbits. Network Center reports an 802.11n connection (at 65Mbps usually) but transfers never reach above about 200kB/s. Being limited to 1/20th of the connection speed of my internet service is quite frustrating. Does anybody experience the same issue? I have been trying to identify the Broadcom Wi-Fi chipset and a driver that I could try to upgrade to but I have made very little progress on Google on this front.

• Bonjour/DNS Service Discovery queries

  I'm trying to implement dns service discovery in my application (no, I'm not asking for a programmatic answer). What I believe is one of my big pain points is generating the query. I know I need to send out a multicast broadcast on port 5353 and want to look for devices of type _ipp._tcp and _print._tcp, but I don't know what the question section needs to look like. For example, in SSDP I sent out a query that looks like the following: "M-SEARCH * HTTP/1.1\r\n" "HOST: 239.255.255.250:1900\r\n" + "MAN: \"ssdp:discover\"\r\n" "ST: urn:schemas-upnp-org:device:Printer:1\r\n" "MX: 5000\r\n\r\n" From what I know about a DNS query I need to send something like: "_ipp.tcp,all,all" but I know there needs to be more. Any pointers to documentation, etc would be greatly appreciated! update rfc1035 appears to contain promising information re the message structure.

• Change audio output depending on which one is on

  I have a PC that is hooked up to my HDTV (via a long hdmi cable) and to a monitor, which is in another room. I have speakers directly plugged to the PC audio out. The PC is next to the monitor and speakers. I am not sure but I think Windows can play sound on only 1 audio device at a time. And I can only set 1 device as the default output. I can get sound on the TV or speaker depending on which device I set to default. But I would have to do this every time I switch between using my TV or my monitor! Is there some way to configure such that sound plays through the TV if the TV is on, else it plays in the speakers? If this is not possible, then the next best alternative would be to get the sound to play on both the devices at the same time. Thanks!

• prevent domain controller using wpad for windows update

  We have a 2012 domain controller in an environment where we are running a web proxy auto discovery (WPAD) setup for client devices, and that proxy server requires authentication. However windows update does not support proxy servers requiring authentication. So we want to prevent windows update on our servers from using the WPAD proxy settings. On a domain member server we can log in to the local administrator account (not domain admin) and un-tick the the "Auto detect proxy settings" in IE internet options and that fixes the issue on those servers. But a domain controller does not have a local admin account, as that account is the domain admin account. Doing this to the domain admin account on the DC does not prevent it from using WPAD. Our whole purpose of running a proxy server that requires authentication is so we can identify what the users on our session based remote desktop servers are doing on the internet. • How can ShadowProtect SBS backup to alternating external drives?

  I am trying to configure ShadowProtect SBS (v. 4.1.5.10129) in Windows Server 2003 SBS to backup my server hard drives to two alternating external drives. What I want is to be able to swap one drive for another every Friday, and have ShadowProtect continue on the same schedule. Ideally, this would require absolutely no user interaction whatsoever, apart from physically unplugging one drive and reconnecting the other. The trouble is, Windows Server 2003 does not allow you to assign the same drive letter to two different devices. So if I plug in drive #1 and assign it drive letter "X:", the next week when I unplug it and plug in drive #2, it gets some other letter. But since ShadowProtect is set to backup to "X:\", it can't find it and the backup fails. The drives are Samsung STORY Station 3.0 2TB drives. How can I configure things so I can just swap the drives over every week and not worry about having to reconfigure drive letters every time?

• Error in using DBAN on HDD

  I am using DBAN to erase HDD. DBAN is loaded from a CD and BIOS Boot order has been set to favour CD drive. On starting laptop, system boots from CD and DBAN interface can be seen. DBAN detects two storage devices, HDD and the SD Card. My HDD IS 320GB but DBAN says 298GB. It erases the SD card but when i try to erase HDD, it gives following error. DBAN finished with non-fatal errors. *ERROR /dev/sdb (process crash) *ERROR /dev/sda (process crash)

• Unable to sync the Zune software with my HTC HD7

  I have a brand new HTC HD7 with Windows Phone 7, with no Software installed. I am running on Windows 7 64 bit. Whenever I try to sync my Mobile Device with Zune- I get this message: Can't connect to your phone. Disconnect it, restart it, then try connecting again I've downloaded latest Zune software and all updates. I don't have any certificates on my personal certificates. My phone is listed under Portable devices in Device manager (It shows as phone with driver version 4.7.965.0). I've restarted both my computer and the mobile device few times. I tried unlocking the device during the Zune sync Any ideas as to how I can sync my phone ?

• UAC-account-users can't see their mounted network-drives

  I wrote a few login batches in the Group Policy Management which mount specified devices to specified usergroups. The batches work as they should as long UAC is disabled. My problem is that the UAC-account-users can't see their mounted network-drives because the login scripts run in elevated context. I tried to fix the problem with PsExec (-l) so that the network-folders are mapped with limited user rigths. But it seems that this won't work. (PsExec is already installed on all computers so it can work local.) Has anyone an idea how to fix that problem? I spended a long time in trying to fix the problem but I did not find any solutions about THIS problem.

• Good HDMI splitter solution

  I have a full HD TV which has only 2 HDMI ports on it. Since I have more than 2 devices I connect to TV (e.g. laptop, game console, DVD player), it becomes uncomfortable to plug in and plug out HDMI cables every time I need to use the relevant device. I need a cheap solution to increase the number of my HDMI ports at least to 3. What type of splitter do you recommend? Does the quality of splitter matter, or do they all produce the same audio & video quality?

• I can't get router and switches configured properly for my home office network

  Networking Gurus, I recently built a new detached garage, with an office above. As such I had it tied into my existing home ethernet wiring. The ethernet signal is coming into the garage just fine, but I can not get my network configured the way I want because of problems trying to link the various router/switch devices. Please see the following links for the network diagrams: Home Network So basically, I can't my future state to work. I'm not sure if I'm using incompatible switches or what, but I tried the future state with some 4 port switches from best buy and had no luck. I resorted to setting up the Current State so I could operate. What I am looking for is help on how best to get my future state to work. However, at the moment Onlive is only for remotely controlling video games, and not desktops or other devices in general. I'm in pursuit of software or services that can accomplish this as well as Onlive does. I need: viewer (client) program portability (able to run on a USB stick) DirectX, OpenGL / full-screen game compatibility on the server side.** Gaming-acceptable color/scaling quality and responsiveness. I have a very powerful desktop at home and I want to be able to access this raw power from any other computer that I stick my USB into (in the same way Onlive gives gamers use of their powerful servers) What software/services has most of the above? • What effect does RAID stripe size have on read-ahead settings?

  I'm trying to figure out the correct read-ahead values to set on a RAID10 array, and I'm wondering if the RAID stripe size should factor into my considerations. I've heard conflicting information about this in the past. I once heard that you should always set your read-ahead value to a multiple of the RAID stripe size, and never below the stripe size, because that is the minimum amount of data the RAID controller will ever try to read at once. Someone else told me, however, that setting read-ahead below the stripe size is fine, and can, in fact, increase the amount of parallel reads you can do across devices in the array, increasing performance and decreasing load on the array. So which is it? Do read-ahead settings that aren't multiples of the stripe size make sense or not?

  Hi All, Can someone tell me the what is the difference between DLNA and UPNP ? I can see that some devices such as NAS have their specifications mentioning both (e.g. Iomega StorCenter) or only DLNA (e.g. Netgear Stora). Is this a synomym for the same thing or is is actually 2 different protocals ? Are they compatible, i.e. if a media server uses DLNA and the streaming device uses UPNP, will it work ?   I'll just say a few random things One usb wifi device i notice only worked when it plugged into my usb hub Another one worked but couldnt get full speed. It came with an extention cord and when i had it a few feet away i was able to (usually) get full speed I had a wifi card in a tower in the past and just about all laptops have it built in How do i use a USB wifi adapter properly? The first device didnt come with an extention cord and made no mention of bringing it away from the computer. When someone else tested the device he said he was getting full speed while it was plugged into his tower so i was pretty surpised. How do i use USB wifi devices properly?

• Getting triple-tap for Gyration Media Center remote working in Windows shell

  I have this Gyration remote which, out of the box, does not support triple-tap for text entry outside of Media Center; only numbers can be entered in the Windows shell. Gyration have a patch that supposedly allows this, but it hasn't worked for me. I'm not alone in this regard it seems though. I've seem some discussion on removing and reinstalling USB devices to get this working, but nothing I'd really trust not to screw something else up. Does anyone have any tips for getting this functionality working properly?

  Question: Can I deploy BES and BES Express with Exchange 2010? Any tips for doing this if possible? Background: We have a lot of users with personal BlackBerry's and we would like to allow them to start using their devices for receviing corporate email. We don't need full BES features for these users, just the ability to enforce passwords and remotely wipe. Plus users have never wanted to upgrade their data plans to the more expensive BES plans. So BES Express is a great fit. We already have an existing BES, for corporate owned BB's. We want to keep this as is allows us to enforce several policies, not available on BES Express.

• Mac Mini's internet very slow, every other device fine (PC, iPhone, Xbox 360)

  I recently haven't used my Mac Mini for about 5 days (however it was left on). I seem to be able to connect and get great download / upload speeds through my PC, Xbox 360, iPhone and parents' laptop. However, my Mac Mini is very slow. OS X's Mail.app is downloading mail at 0.4kbps and then dropping to 0. Skype file transfers are doing the same. Browsing the net is a terrible experience. It is taking 30 seconds or more to download basic pages. All of my devices connect wirelessly to a Netgear router / modem. I have tried giving the Mac Mini a manual IP, and renew DHCP lease, as well as flush DNS in Terminal. I have also rebooted the router / modem twice, and the Mac Mini twice. Do you know what could be causing this? Thanks
