Subdomains vs. subdirectory – status as of 2012.

This following question by Jeff was in 2010 and I wanted to check how things have changed in the past 2 years. My problem: I run a site with most of the content distributed to subdomains that’s are user based. E.g: Joe.example.com John.example.com Jil.example.com So all of these subdomains have the content and the main site example.com becomes a mere dummy listing all the subdomains. Now the question is, as of 2012, how is google treating domain authority and page rank in this case? I understand the notion of page rank as page per se but when it comes to domain authority will the parent domain have the cumulative effect of the domain authority or will it be spread out?

What are the disadvantages of naming things alphabetically?

Let me give you an example of how I name my classes alphabetically: Car CarHonda (subclass of Car) CarHondaAccord (subclass of CarHonda) There are two reasons why I put the type of the class earlier in its name: When browsing your files alphabetically in a file explorer, related items appear grouped together and parent classes appear above child classes. I can progressively refine auto-complete in my IDE. First I type the major type, then the secondary type, and so on without having to memorize what exactly I named the last part of the thing. My question is why do I hardly see any other programmers do this? They usually name things in reverse or some random order. Take the iOS SDK for example: UIViewController UITableViewController What are the disadvantages of my naming convention and the advantages of their convention?

I had originally planned on finishing up a series on relationships (parent/child, etc.) but felt this would be an interesting topic for folks, and I also wanted to start integrating some of the current NHibernate reference. reliably restarting services using upstart or runit

I want to reliably restart my app and web server processes on crash. If I understand correctly, runit starts every service as a child process. If the child process crashes this sends a signal to the parent process which in turn respawns the service as a child. How does this work in the case of upstart. Does it also spawn a child process like runit? I am considering using runit for this. Is that needed, or is upstart good enough for this ? I am using nginx for my web server and gunicorn (python) for my app server.

Stumbling Through: Visual Studio 2010 (Part II)

I would now like to expand a little on what I stumbled through in part I of my Visual Studio 2010 post and touch on a few other features of VS 2010. Specifically, I want to generate some code based off of an Entity Framework model and tie it up to an actual data source. Im not going to take the easy way and tie to a SQL Server data source, though, I will tie it to an XML data file instead. Why? Well, why not? This is purely for learning, there are probably much better ways to get strongly-typed classes around XML but it will force us to go down a path less travelled and maybe learn a few things along the way. Once we get this XML data and the means to interact with it, I will revisit data binding to this data in a WPF form and see if I cant get reading, adding, deleting, and updating working smoothly with minimal code. To begin, I will use what was learned in the first part of this blog topic and draw out a data model for the MFL (My Football League) - I dont want the NFL to come down and sue me for using their name in this totally football-related article. The data model looks as follows, with Teams having Players, and Players having a position and statistics for each season they played: Note that when making the associations between these entities, I was given the option to create the foreign key but I only chose to select this option for the association between Player and Position. The reason for this is that I am picturing the XML that will contain this data to look somewhat like this: <MFL> <Position/> <Position/> <Position/> <Team> <Player> <Statistic/> </Player> </Team> </MFL> Statistic will be under its associated Player node, and Player will be under its associated Team node no need to have an Id to reference it if we know it will always fall under its parent. Position, however, is more of a lookup value that will not have any hierarchical relationship to the player. In fact, the Position data itself may be in a completely different xml file (something Id like to play around with), so in any case, a player will need to reference the position by its Id. So now that we have a simple data model laid out, I would like to generate two things based on it: A class for each entity with properties corresponding to each entity property An IO class with methods to get data for each entity, either all instances, by Id or by parent. Now my experience with code generation in the past has consisted of writing up little apps that use the code dom directly to regenerate code on demand (or using tools like CodeSmith). Surely, there has got to be a more fun way to do this given that we are using the Entity Framework which already has built-in code generation for SQL Server support. Lets start with that built-in stuff to give us a base to work off of. Right click anywhere in the canvas of our model and select Add Code Generation Item: So just adding that code item seemed to do quite a bit towards what I was intending: It apparently generated a class for each entity, but also a whole ton more. I mean a TON more. Way too much complicated code was generated now that code is likely to be a black box anyway so it shouldnt matter, but we need to understand how to make this work the way we want it to work, so lets get ready to do some stumbling through that text template (tt) file. When I open the .tt file that was generated, right off the bat I realize there is going to be trouble there is no color coding, no intellisense no nothing! That is going to make stumbling through more like groping blindly in the dark while handcuffed and hopping on one foot, which was one of the alternate titles I was considering for this blog. Thankfully, the community comes to my rescue and I wont have to cast my mind back to the glory days of coding in VI (look it up, kids). Using the Extension Manager (Available under the Tools menu), I did a quick search for tt editor in the Online Gallery and quickly found the Tangible T4 Editor: Downloading and installing this was a breeze, and after doing so I got some color coding and intellisense while editing the tt files. If you will be doing any customizing of tt files, I highly recommend installing this extension. How do you create links with a NULL or # in Drupal?

Trying to create folders for links where the parent has no content, it's just a folder. Need to be able to insert #, but Drupal is saying it's not a link. Just want the user to click it and nothing happen, the child of that menu item will already be being displayed without a click. Version: Drupal 6 (appears worked in D5) I've attempted the following: '', #, <#>, empty, <empty>, null, <null>, blank, <blank>, <none>, none, <answer> ...just kidding. If we write iOS and sell on App Store, are we protected for legal consequences? [closed]

Will the developer or company (is a corporation or is not) be responsible for legal consequences, or will they be covered and protected by the Apple Store Terms of Use agreement? For example: 1) the app is fun and the kids show the app to a parent who is driving the car, and got into an accident. 2) if the app does road navigation and it went into problem or crash or slow, and caused an accident while driving. 3) or if the terms require using an app in a safe and non-time critical situation, what if the app recommend some exercise routine or diet (such as suggesting eating more eggs, milk, or using some herbs), and it could be argued that they caused any health consequence?

Multiple weapons for android game

I am trying to make a 3D game for android using the Rajawali engine to render the 3D graphics and blender for designing my models(exporting as .md2), and I want my character to be able to change weapons, armor, helm, etc. Rendering every possible animation would be too much: if I had 10 different weapons, 10 armor and 10 helm, I would have to create 1000 animations with every possible equipment and if I add boots to list it would be even worse. I read somewhere you can use bones for this; but in Android, I only get the object itself to work with. Does anyone has an idea how i can solve this? If I make the weapon a different object how do I parent it to my models in my game?

Why does IDLE continue to crash? [migrated]

Idle keeps crashing and I can't figure it out. After restarting the computer and reinstalling Python, none of which seemed to work, I looked to my peers and was told to "install one of the Tcl/Tk". After getting another opinion I was also told that I already had this and found it to be true but decided to try it anyway since it continued to crash. Nothing has improved and I have an assignment due. Any ideas on why this continues to happen and what I can do to fix the crash? Tracking a single page on another domain in Google Analytics

I have access to edit a 'mini-site' hosted on our organisation's parent site. I'd like to track this page using Google Analytics, however I don't have access to the front page so I can't verify this as my domain. Using the tracking code for our main site works, however I don't want this data to be confused with similarly named pages on our site (for example, our mini-site is at /radio, and if we had a /radio at our main site this would be counted as the same). Has anyone been in this situation before? I'd like to just redirect visitors to our mini-site to our main site, seeing as it ranks higher in Google, but I've been told to maintain a separate site with our main features.

He may knows nothing about history concept in the project. By scalling these kind of functionallities, interfaces may goes to their encapsulated types which cause more type strength, on the other hand explicitness suffered and also code end users will face much pain to process. So here is the question: Should I encapsulate those dependant types to their parent types (interface hierarchies) or not or explicitly repeat each type for every single level of my type system or ...?

How can I add multiple values to one object in an Array. I am having Environment and Cluster, I am able to assign multiple clusters to one environment. Now I want to add application name to this environment and cluster pair. I am having page called "Add Application". Here I am using select menu to for environment and Cluster. My first question is, when I select environment then want to show only those clusters which are assigned to that environment name. And assign application name to that pair. Also should be able to edit the Application field. (Phaser) Preload Future States in Create?

I'm a first time user of Phaser, been trying to make a simple point and click type game. I'm trying to keep things very modular, so I'm defining a list of levels (states) in a JSON, and then every level has its own JSON containing the objects within that level. However, I'm encountering an issue in that, when changing states, I get a black flash while the assets for the next state load (this happens whether I iterate through the JSON list or define everything manually). From what I've read, all sprites should be loaded in the preload stage, however, by doing this I'm causing that tiny but noticeable black pause. I know one way would be to simply load every asset at the start of the game, but that seems incredibly inefficient (wouldn't that fill up the memory immensely?). I would rather load a state's assets from the "parent" state. However, in my quick test (which maybe I did wrong) it seems that game.load doesn't work properly if done within the create stage? What is the best approach to doing this?

Using bone joints

I am trying to save bone joints to a file, and am using this format. I was wondering if anyone could clear up a few questions I have why do I need to provide rotation data for the bone, if I already gave it the location? How do I calculate the rotation of each axis if I have the relative location from the parent joint? ** EDIT ** After doing some more digging, I think that it has something to do with quaternions, so, could someone point me to a good resource on using quaternions for bone joints? ** EDIT AGAIN ** I think I've solved it, but I don't understand how it works. I can't seem to find any google results explaining it. I'd appreciate if anyone could send resources explaining it to me.

I'm currently working on a small update to a project and I'm having an issue with Relative_Layout and fill_parent in a list view. I'm trying to insert a divider between two sections in each row, much like the divider in the call log of the default dialer. I checked out the Android source code to see how they did it, but I encountered a problem when replicating their solution. If I set the RelativeLayout's layout_height property to fill_parent, the divider does not scale vertically to fill the row (it just remains a 1px dot). If I set layout_height to "?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeight", the divider fills the row, but the thumbnails shrink. I've done some debugging in the getView() method of the adapter, and it seems that the divider's height is not being set properly once the row has it's proper height. Here is a portion of the getView() method: public View getView(int position, View view, ViewGroup parent) { if (view == null) { view = inflater.inflate(R.layout.tag_list_item, parent, false); } The rest of the method simply sets the appropriate text and images for the row. Also, I create the inflater object in the adapter's constructor with: inflater = LayoutInflater.from(context); Am I missing something essential? Or does fill_parent just not work with dynamic heights?

WPF: Viewbox and TranslatePoint

Hello, I have a Viewbox with a Canvas Child, I have the Stretch property of Viewbox to Fill, I have changed the width and height of the Viewbox, I need to get the location of children in Canvas with respect to Viewbox parent I tried : Point p = viewboxInstance.TranslatePoint(new Point(Canvas.GetLeft(child), Canvas.GetTop(child)), viewboxInstanceParent); it gets wrong coordinates! Is there a solution or work around ? Thanks
