  • Teaching a kid to type in order to start programming

    My 5 year old wants to start programming, but he doesn't yet know how to type without looking for each letter 1 at a time. I know it's going to frustrate him to go so slow because of his typing speed. And it's not going to be fun looking for all the letters constantly... So what's the best way to get him to type fast? Clearly he'll need to type a lot of punctuation like semicolons, colons and symbols. So his little hands will have to get used to spreading over the keyboard... I did some google searches and found some very poor looking apps that focused on the letters.

  • iPhone development - app design patterns

    There are tons of resources concerning coding on the iPhone. Most of them concern "how do I do X", e.g. "setup a navigation controller", or "download text from a URL". All good and fine. What I'm more interested in now are the questions that follow the simpler stuff - how to best structure your complex UI, or your app, or the common problems that arise. To illustrate: a book like "Beginning iPhone 3 Development" tells you how to set up a multi viewcontroller app with an top 'switcher' viewcontroller that switches between views owned by other view controllers. Fine, but you're only told how to do that, and nothing about the problems that can follow: for example, if I use their paradigm to switch to a UINavigationViewController, the Navigation bar ends up too low on the screen, because UINavigationViewController expects to be the topmost UIViewController (apparently). Also, delegate methods (e.g. relating to orientation changes) go to the top switcher view controller, not the actual controller responsible for the current view. I have fixes for these things but they feel like hacks which makes me unhappy and makes me feel like I'm missing something. One productive thing might be to look at some open source iPhone projects (see this question). But aside from that?

    I have a logic situation that is best described as two "Teams" trying to win a task. The outcome of this task could be a single winner, a tie (draw), or no winner (stalemate). Currently, I'm using a nested if/else statement like so: // using PHP, but the concept seems language agnostic. if ($team_a->win()) { if ($team_b->win()) { // this is a draw } else { // team_a is the winner } } else { if ($team_b->win()) { // team_b is the winner } else { // This is a stalemate, no winner. } } This seems rather spaghetti-like and repetitive. Is there a more logical, DRY pattern I could use?

  • Reducing Dimension For SVM in Sensor Network

    Hi Everyone, I am looking for some suggestions on a problem that I am currently facing. I have a set of sensor say S1-S100 which is triggered when some event E1-E20 is performed. Assume, normally E1 triggers S1-S20, E2 triggers S15-S30, E3 triggers S20-s50 etc and E1-E20 are completely independent events. Occasionally an event E might trigger any other unrelated sensor. I am using ensemble of 20 svm to analyze each event separately. My features are sensor frequency F1-F100, number of times each sensor is triggered and few other related features. I am looking for a technique that can reduce the dimensionality of the sensor feature(F1-F100)/ or some techniques that encompasses all of the sensor and reduces the dimension too(i was looking for some information theory concept for last few days) . I dont think averaging, maximization is a good idea as I risk loosing information(it did not give me good result). Can somebody please suggest what am I missing here? A paper or some starting idea...     Hi Everyone I am python newbie I have to implement lasso L1 regression for a class assignment. This involves solving a quadratic equation involving block matrices. minimize x^t * H * x + f^t * x where x 0 Where H is a 2 X 2 block matrix with each element being a k dimensional matrix and x and f being a 2 X 1 vectors each element being a k dimension vector. I was thinking of using nd arrays. such that np.shape(H) = (2, 2, k, k) np.shape(x) = (2, k) But I figured out that np.dot(X, H) doesn't work here. Is there an easy way to solve this problem?     Hello all, I'm looking to purchase a jquery book. I'm a strong C# developer whose had experience with dojo. Now, I'm building my own site and am looking to learn a new platform in the process. So, I've chosen jquery. With dojo, I know how to make my own widgets. I want to learn about ways to plug into jquery to make reusable controls. Also, I plan to make heavy use of json with ajax. Other things to consider: I would call my javascript expertise as intermediate. I'd like to find a book that is as up to date with the jquery platform as possible as I know that in a few months it will likely be out of date. What book or books would you reccomend?

    There are lots of training methods from different vendors to learn .NET technologies (i.e. books, DVDs, online training, etc.). All of them claim the same thing: that they are the best, their content is 100% guaranteed, makes their customers professional in no time, etc. It’s confusing and sometimes frustrating as well. I especially want a training resource (i.e. a course) to provide valuable content in short time. More importantly I feel they should do their job properly so as to avoid the customer feeling they've wasted time or money. What I should do when I evaluating training methods and resources to help further software development skills? What are your training sources? Do you have any recommendations?

  • C++ - Need to learn some basics in a short while

    For reasons I will spare you, I have two weeks to learn some C++. I can learn alone just fine, but I need a good source. I don't think I have time to go through an entire book, and so I need some cliff notes, or possibly specific chapters/specialized resources I need to look up. I know my Asm/C/C# well, and so anything inherited from C, or any OOP is not needed. What I do need is some sources on the following subjects(I have a page that specifies what is needed, this is basically it, but I trimmed what I know): new/delete in C++ (as opposed to C#). Overloading cin/cout. Constructor, Destructor and MIL. Embedded Objects. References. Templates. If you feel some basic C++ concept that is not shared with C/C# is not included on this list, feel free to enter those as well. But the above subjects are the ones I'm supposed to roughly know in two week's time. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

    What are the best practices for allowing a user to maintain the html title tags of all the major pages of his/her site? One way could be to allow the mapping of URLs to some text. For example, we have an app with the following (most complex) url format: http://lang.example.com/searchpage.zaf?a=foo&b=bar&c=RANDOM There are several parts to this: Language sub domain Search page Static parameter 'a' (user may want this in the title) Dynamic and relevant parameter 'b' (user may want this in the title) Dynamic parameter 'c' which can be ignored Never done this before, so I'm asking how you would tackle this!

Reading code is important -- how does one learn how to write excellent code without having read excellent code? But, sadly, while great writers, of fiction and non-fiction, all spend a great deal of time reading stuff, we, programmers, seem to avoid it like the plague. Worse still, programming books usually go the same way. They might show a pattern or a style, but they often avoid showing good, complex code, and helping one go through it. There are exceptions, of course. I hope. So, with that in mind, what books are to be found which help one learn how to read code?

    What should a teen dev do for practical experience? If you want more details , then read on: I learnt programming when I was 9 , with GWBASIC (which I now hate) , which was what was taught @ school. That was done in a month. After that I learnt C++ and relearnt it (as I didn't know of templates and the STL before that) Recently I learnt PHP , SQL and Python. This was around the time I switched over to Ubuntu. I'd always loved the "GNUish" style of software development so I jumped right in. However , most of the projects that I found required extensive knowledge of their existing codebase. So , right now I'm this guy who knows a couple of languages and has written a couple of small programs ... but hasn't gone "big", if you get it. I would love suggestions of projects that are informal and small to medium sized , and do not require much knowledge of the codebase. Also note that I've looked at things like Google Summer of Code and sites like savannah.gnu.org and the first doesn't apply , since I'm still in school and the latter either has infeasable projects , or things that are too hard.

I tried to write extension method which returns IEnumerable, but I am not satisfied with the result because again I have to declare a cycle variable i. public static class IntExtender { public static IEnumerable Times(this int times) { for (int i = 0; i < times; i++) yield return true; } } ... foreach (var i in 5.Times()) { ... } Is it possible using some new C# 3.0 language features to make N times cycle more elegant?
