• Sony Vegas: minimal audio glitches

  When doing video-editing with Sony Vegas, I noticed that it kind of produces minimal audio glitches very often. With glitch, I mean a copied fragment of approximately 1/2 second, as if I copied it and directly pasted it again. I'm assuming it must be something with puffers. Does anyone know of this problem? I have a pretty fast Windows 7 system with fast SATA drives.

• Right Clicking error in windows 7 windows explorer

  Whenever I right-click something in windows explorer other than favorites, libraries, computer, or network (the main headings in the left pane), the drop-down menu does not appear and an error pops up "windows explorer has stopped working" - "windows explorer is restarting". Once those both close the icons on the desktop and taskbar itself blink off and back on again. Is there any way of finding out what is going on when I right click and this problem ensues?

• terminal tools and logs for debugging TCP issues

  I have a server which I am testing for functionality (not load, not stress) with tsung. 50 users / second, 100 total users. Judging from tsung (tsung is the testing framework) graphs, there TCP connections (red line) drops to 0 while the commenced user sessions (green line) does not. Server logs show nothing to be gripping onto, so I am speculating some kind of TCP issue. Should this be the case ? Where would I look further on the server, any logs / tools to be looking at ? • Server freeze - how to debug

  I am running a Debian virtual server with Apache, PHP, MySQL. There is just 1 website with very low traffic running but the server very often (almost everyday) freezes and does not respond. When this happens the server is unreachable from web browser or by SSH and I have to go to administration of my provider and perform server hard reset after this the server seems to work fine. • MacBook Pro screen goes dark

  I've had my MacBook Pro for two years now; no problems so far (it has had 3rd party RAM from the get go). Today, I'm copying a particularly large VM from an External disk drive to local MacBook disk. It has about 3GB to go and I take off to do some other things and when I come back my screen is "dark". The computer is still on but I can't see anything. I forced a reboot by holding down the power button, it starts up with the "chimes", but still no screen. I've done this several times. Any ideas? Do you think the hard disk activity caused it to get too hot?

• Hyper-V Guests suddenly stopped working

  Hi! Here's my configuration: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard as a host OS, and two guests VMs running the same exact OS. Yesterday, Trial Activation on all OSes has expired and quite naturally all machines shut down. I rearmed the host, but cannot log on to either guest VMs. From what I see, they start up normally (State is listed as Running) but CPU Usage seems to be stuck at 3% and when I connect to it all I see is black textmode screen with cursor blinking. One of my VMs has several snapshots, and when I revert back, it starts up normally. Moreover, "reference VM" (the one I cloned these two VMs from) starts up just normally. How can I troubleshoot this issue?

• Mysterious Windows 7 slowdown problem

  I have a fairly beefy machine: Intel Q9450 8GB DDR2800 (4x2) Intel X25-M G2 80GB SSD Several other hard drives Windows 7 Ultimate 64 In the last month I've gotten a mysterious slowdown problem. When I start my IDE (IntelliJ IDEA) it usually takes about 20 seconds on the SSD. If my machine has been on for a day or two (as far as I can tell this is the only pattern) and I try to start the IDE, it brings my machine to a halt. CPU usage goes up to 25% per core (so it's basically 100% usage) and it takes up to 5 minutes to start. Other things I've noticed: iTunes will start to skip and stutter (my music is running off a second hard drive). The only persistent things I'm running are: AVG Anti-Virus Spybot (the slowdown predates this) Hamachi and Murmur (again the slowdown predates this) Apple Airport Base Agent HP OfficeJet 8500 driver/manager The browser I use is Chrome. I can't think why that'd be relevant but it's always on so I thought I'd mention it. When this happens I can't see a reason for it in the process list. No CPU hogs. No spikes in IO activity that I can see. Basically I'm at a loss to explain it and need to reboot, at which point everything returns to normal (for awhile). FWIW the Intel SSD is about 75-80% full. I know being too full can really degrade performance. I don't believe that's the issue here. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to fix this or at least help find what's going wrong? This same machine (sans SSD) could run Win XP and stay up fine for a month or two.

• Wireless very slow on one laptop on network, all other machines normal?

  My new laptop (Acer Aspire Timeine 3810TZ running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) is acting very strange on my wireless network. Below are the issues I'm noticing... The connection frequently drops. I see the icon change from 'full bars' to 'empty bars with yellow star (meaning no connection)' occasionally. Almost every website I visit (Firefox) hangs for a long time on 'Looking up www.amazon.com' for example. After a long pause, it finally starts loading the website. Neither of these problems exist on any other machines on my network. I also have a desktop running the same OS wirelessly and it works fine. I've run several Speedtest.net tests and the speeds are great (20MBit down/4 up). Results from pingtest.net are as follows: Line quality: D Ping: 46ms Jitter: 65ms Packet Loss: 9% These results are to a server that is less than 10 miles from my residence. The results on the other machines in my house are normal. Any suggestions? This is becoming very annoying as I purchased this machine primarily for browsing.

  My in-laws are having trouble with signing into their Verizon Webmail account at webmail.verizon.net, only when they are on their wireless network. When they try to log in from wireless they get "Error 324" in the browser, in both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8. But they can access any other site, and they can get on their Verizon email when they plug in directly to the browser. Why is this?

• Desktop PC does not power up on power button

  When I press the power button on my desktop, it does not power up completely. Before I press the power button, I see lights on the motherboard. Everything is normal. On power button press, the fans on the cpu, graphics card and motherboard start to spin a little for a second or two and then they stop. No beeps during this process. It has been doing this for a while now but it used to start up after some trials. Once it starts up, I have NO issues at all like random shutdowns so it is not an issue with OS. Update: I left the desktop off for a few days and it started. I'm just guessing here but it seems as if the PSU (Antec TP2-550ATX) is dying out and does not have enough power now - just a guess. It's an old desktop assembled in 2005 but I have maintained it well. Update: I always keep the desktop running and I never shut it down. During updates or manual restarts, it powers up without issues. I wonder if this sheds lights on the issue. Any idea how I can narrow down the issue? ex: if I can find if the PSU is dying etc. I'd really like to fix the issue. Please help. Thanks. Below is the complete configuration.   I'm attempting to get gltail set up on my local system to monitor logs remotely. I've got all the dependencies installed, but when I go to run gltail ... ./gl_tail configfile ../config.yaml I get this output: Missing gem net-ssh. Ubuntu: sudo gem install -y net-ssh -r .. which I've done a number of times. • Unable to logoff, disconnect, or reset terminal server user in production environment

  I'm looking for some ideas on how to disconnect, logoff, or reset a user's session in a 2008 Terminal Server (unable to login as the user either as it is completely locked-up). This is a production environment, so rebooting the server or doing something system-wide is out of the question for now. Any Powershell tricks to help us with this? We've tried to disconnect, log the user off and reset the session as well as killing the session's processes too, directly from the same terminal server (from the task manager, Terminal Services Manager and the Resource Monitor) with no results. Help! UPDATE: We ended up rebooting the server as no other attempts that we could think of worked. I'll leave this question open hoping someone might have more information about this one issue, and it's potential fixes

• Why does my computer show a black screen when booting into Windows Vista?

  Today, I removed some old software from dad's vista, and installed SP1. After which the computer restarted and it went into a "black" screen. I left it running for a few hours, and the laptop was really hot. I tried to get into safemode, start from last known good start up, but nothing seemed to work. i know it stops after loading \windows\system32\drivers\cplir.sys what's going on and how can I fix his computer? Update I'm still unable to fix my install. Repair and restoring the OS fail. The laptop has the vista partition built into it. I can't boot through a USB, and my other computer doesn't have a cd/dvd writer Update 2 I tried chkdisk /f and although it fixed some errors, I still get the black screen of death.

• Why does Internet Explorer sometimes fail to connect to anything until I restart it?

  IE has an annoying problem on my PC (XP SP3). I start it and try to go to Google (for example) and it'll sit there saying "Connecting" but nothing will happen and it doesn't matter how many times I try, it won't connect to anything. I discovered that if I kill IE and restart it then it might start working (and then it'll work every time). It might takes 3-4 restarts (of IE, not the PC) to get a working IE. Now I wouldn't normally care about this since I use Chrome but a lot of things use IE by default like Windows Update and the online help in Office 2003 so I would like to fix it. Interestingly, my work laptop, which is running Windows 7 RC 64-bit, has exactly the same problem (completely different network and everything). I'm utterly convinced it's not a network or hardware problem but some software problem. Edit: More info. It's IE8; No add-ons; Automatically detect settings is not enabled. It is set to "Never dial a connection".

• Is there a realiable way to troubleshoot wake up from sleep in Windows?

  Is there a reliable way to troubleshoot laptop wakes? I've seen "heuristics" posted here and there but isn't there really a simple and deterministic way to tell what's causing a problem? Specifically, my laptop wakes up about every hour for about 2 minutes. Exported event log entries are here: http://www.mediafire.com/?abcqb00v5wyo6pj. I've tried: powercfg -devicequery wake_armed Empty result set. Scheduled tasks - the main ones are not scheduled to run every hour. When go through a long list of all possible tasks, there are some that are set to be triggered every hour (e.g., MS "RacTask" whatever it is). But when I go to power options, Advanced settings, Sleep, Allow wake timers it is set to "Disable". Also, the specific task is not set to wake the computer if necessary. Power options for my Ethernet card don't enable it to wake the computer - the cable is disconnected anyway. There are no other HW devices attached - no USB disks, no keyboards / mice etc. I am really clueless and quite unhappy that it's so hard to troubleshoot this situation.

  So I recently made some purchases for a new computer including: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R CPU : Intel Core2Quad 2.66Ghz Power Supply: Antec Basiq 500w UPDATE: I got the Power Supply working, the motherboard's lights come on, the video card fan spins, BUT the CPU fan does NOT spin and there is no video. Whats the possibility of lacking power? In the mobo guide it says the use of a power supply providing a 2x4 12V connector is recommended (I do not have this connector) by the CPU manufacturer when using an Intel Extreme Edition (I'm using Core2Quad) UPDATE: Got it working, intstalling windows 7 now.   Hi Guys, I've got the following computer and I've just put in a new CPU QX9650 and I've run into this problem since making this hardware change. Whenever I put more than 1 of my 4 sticks of ram into my machine it wont load an OS. It'll go through the BIOS but BSOD on windows load. It also wont let me install an OS from disk or boot into Linux. I've ran memtest with all 4 sticks in and I get 10k+ errors on test5. Each stick of ram on it's own is fine and functions properly. I only have problems when all 4 sticks are in the machine at the same time. System specs.. CPU: QX9650 Mobo: Asus P5B 2104 BIOS RAM: 2xPC25400 DDR2 , 2xPC2 6400 both OCZ. Is the problem on my end or is the CPU faulty?

• How to determine the root cause of a system lockup on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS?

  I'm currently working a project that involves setting up a PC/104 stack and running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. We need to use the PC/104 stack because its an embedded application - and we're required to use a DeviceNet peripheral card to communicate to other devices. (DeviceNet is just a protocol on top of CAN.) Anyway, the following hardware is on the stack: Kontron MOPSPM104 with a 1GHz Intel Celeron processor ConnectTech FlashDrive/104 4GB Industrial Temp (-40 to +85 C) Woodhead (Molex) PC104DVNIO DeviceNet card A run of the mill 104 power supply The Kontron Board offers two serial ports, one VGA out, and two USB ports. The DeviceNet card is an ISA card. Because of this (per the User's Guide for the Kontron Board), I have manually set the IRQs in the BIOS to be appropriately configured, and turned off ACPI in both the BIOS and passed the appropriate flag in GRUB. I've installed Ubuntu 8.04 desktop, 32 bit. The problem that I'm having is that, from time to time, the entire 104 stack locks up. This only seems to happen in two cases, both of which we're running GNOME. We have a custom application that uses the DeviceNet card, and the system will lock up, or (more frequently) when we're running Firefox and either surfing for some information or trying to test it - typically by streaming video from a IP-camera. The reason I ask this questions is I cannot determine the root cause of this lockup. The IRQs appear to correctly configured in the BIOS and as the Kernel sees them, and nothing is logged to dmesg. If you all could help me determine the root cause of this lockup, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

• How do you troubleshoot Family Safety reports

  I have set up Microsoft Family Safety in Windows 8 for my daughter's account. At first I got meaningful reports via e-mail each week. But then the e-mails started reporting no activity, even though my daughter still uses the computer. The e-mails are still sent to me, but indicate that she is not using the computer at all. Family Safety is definitely still active on the computer. It limits how long she can use the computer. So only the e-mail reports are buggy. I don't know how to troubleshoot this since the e-mails are generated by Microsoft. Any ideas?

• http server connectivity puzzle

  I have been seeing some strange connection issue in the production environment. The setup has two IBM Http Server's (IHS) and a network IP load-balancer in front of them (round-robin). One instance the system is working fine, the next requests stop arriving at the IHS. Telnet directly to port 80 of the IHS is established sucessfully, but connection to the port 80 through the IP of the load-balancer fails! The puzzle comes next, the network admins say the load-balancer is working fine. When we finally reboot the IHS servers and request start flowing... The situation happened three times the last month and no obvious pattern was found. Any debug ideas?
