• Could/Should I use static classes in asp.net/c# for shared data?

  Here's the situation I have: I'm building an online system to be used by school groups. Only one school can log into the system at any one time, and from that school you'll get about 13 users. They then proceed into a educational application in which they have to co-operate to complete tasks, and from a code point of view, sharing variables all over the place. I was thinking, if I set up a static class with static properties that hold the variables that are required to be shared, this could save me having to store/access the variables in/from a database, as long as the static variables are all properly initialized when the application starts and cleaned up at the end. Of course I would also have to put locks on the get and set methods to make the variables thread safe. Something in the back of my mind is telling me this might be a terrible way of going about things, but I'm not sure exactly why, so if people could give me their thoughts for or against using a static class in this situation, I would be quite appreciative.

• Should filters write to the response during or after filtering?

  I have a filter which processes generated HTML and rewrites certain elements. For example, it adds class attributes to some anchors. Finally, it writes the processed HTML to the response (a subclass of HttpServletResponseWrapper). Naturally, this means that the processed HTML is a different length after it has passed through the filter. I can see two ways of approaching this. One is to iterate over the HTML, using a StringBuilder to build up the processed HTML, and write the processed HTML to the response once all filtering is complete. The other is to iterate over the HTML but to write it to the response as soon as each element has been processed. Which is the better way for this operation, or is there another option which would be preferable? I am looking to minimise temporary memory usage primarily.

• Parent Thread exiting before Child Threads [python]

  I'm using Python in a webapp (CGI for testing, FastCGI for production) that needs to send an occasional email (when a user registers or something else important happens). Since communicating with an SMTP server takes a long time, I'd like to spawn a thread for the mail function so that the rest of the app can finish up the request without waiting for the email to finish sending. I tried using thread.start_new(func, (args)), but the Parent return's and exits before the sending is complete, thereby killing the sending process before it does anything useful. Is there anyway to keep the process alive long enough for the child process to finish?

• TFS for version maintainance

  I am part of a team that releases versions of our software 4-5 times each year to our customers. We maintain the previous 2-3 versions of our product by correcting any errors that we come across in later versions. We are using TFS 2008 for source control and are trying to find the best way of maintaining the older versions. We currently create a branch of our application each time we do a new version, but we are looking for a good way to update old versions more easily. For example, we complete 9.5 but two weeks after we created the branch and are working on 10.0, we realize that 9.5 has an error. We currently make the change in version 10.0 and then open 9.5 to make the change again. Is there anyway of automating this? Thanks!

When these two tasks complete, I want the thread to sleep to wait a certain period then repeat. This cycle would just continue forever. • C++ new line not translating

  First off, I'm a complete beginner at C++. I'm coding something using an API, and would like to pass text containing new lines to it, and have it print out the new lines at the other end. If I hardcode whatever I want it to print out, like so printInApp("Hello\nWorld"); it does come out as separate lines in the other end, but if I retrieve the text from the app using a method that returns a const char then pass it straight to printInApp (which takes const char as argument), it comes out as a single line. Why's this and how would I go about to fix it?

  Hi, I have to complete a timer on powerpoint, it countsdown for a specificed amount of time when a shape on particular slide is clicked. I heard macros could be a way to do this, but I have very little knowledge about them. With my research I was able to add a macro and pop out a message box when a shape is clicked*. How can I implement a timer with this? VB syntax is pretty unfamiliar to me. • Displaying objects based on if a user is logged in or not

  I'm learning about PHP sessions for user authentication on my website. I know how to restrict the viewing of a complete page using sessions (simply check if the 'uid' session variable is set and if it is, show content, if not redirect to an error). However I'm trying to figure out the best way to selectively show and hide different objects (div, text, images) based on if a user is logged in or not. Is it as simple as checking for the 'uid' session variable and displaying based on if it set or not? Is there a more efficient way of doing this id there are a lot of conditional elements on a page?

  I've searched for an exhaustive explanation of the meaning of each event monitored by the perf stat command; I've found a tutorial which explains quite well how to use different the features of the perf tool. However, it doesn't explain the meaning of several events that can be observed (and there are a lot!!). Someone know where is a quite simple and complete documentation about the events listed by the perf list command? In particular, I'm interested in finding out the percentage of cpu used by some application I wrote. Can i measure it directly through cpu-clock or task-clock? What's the meaning of these two events? • Can I have multiple instance of the mandlebrot example in one program?

  Basically what I did is I took the Mandlebrot example and have 3 instances of it in my program. So the program would look like a mainwindow that has 3 mandlebrot widgets in it, one besides the other. Is it possible that GDB doesnt support debugging multiple intances of a classe that derives from qthread or is it thread-unsafe to do so? I don't have any problems at run-time but when I put breakpoints in a function called by the QThread run() function I get a segmentation fault. I can clearly see that the function doesn't complete before returning to the breakpoint ie I the program stops at the breakpoint, I step into the lines of codes one by one but after a couple of instructions another thread startS using the function(even though they are different instances).

• In ASP.NET MVC, how does response.redirect work?

  I have used response.redirect in classic ASP and ASP.NET webforms. However, with MVC 2.0, I am running into something peculiar. I have a private method in a controller class that is used by multiple controller methods to help load and validate some information. This private method is setup to redirect if a problem is discovered to a generic error message page. The big problem I am noticing is that the calling controller class and page view attempt to complete rendering and loading before the redirect actually takes place. This is annoying in development because the View throws exceptions that I need to ignore before my generic error page finally loads. As mentioned above, I am used to the older model of response.redirect which prevented subsequent code on a page from being executed as the new page would then load. Any help or advice on redirects in MVC would be greatly appreciated.

  I am trying to install an application and a group of services using PSTools, but I want to take into account that the computer I am trying to connect to may be turned off or on a different network, which is not reachable from the internal network. Basically if the machine is not able to be accessed through the admin share, this is the message that I am getting: Couldn't access MachineName: The network path was not found. Make sure that the default admin$ share is enabled on MachineName. I'm at the part of creating a sprite, assigning it an image and then rendering. • Deselecting an element in jQuery

  I have a collection of span elements. In the code I have a global variable that represents the "selected" object. Using the click event when a span is clicked I reset the object's class, reset the global variable, then set the object to the variable and change its class (to make it "highlighted"). • What workflow should I use for JavaScript editing?

  Warning: I have very little JavsScript experience. In my past programming experience, I usually have a standalone interpreter/compiler, a text editor and a command line to compile/run my software or my tests (I love test driven development). I really like it this way, since I have the feeling of being in complete control over the tools. However, editing JavaScript I need to put statements in a text file , open my web browser and click on reload. I don't feel comfortable with it, as I cannot really see what is going on (besides some alert boxes). Can you suggest me (I'm on a Mac) another workflow? Perhaps with a debugger? Is there a standalone JavaScript interpreter?
