  • How can I identifying control characters in Perl?

    - by sganesh
I want to implement the command line features like in a linux terminal. I saw this in ftp command also. If I press tab I need to list the commands. If I press control characters I need to get that characters based on that I will do some action. And if I give any commands it should execute. For this I tried with Term::ReadKey that is in non-canonical mode. But here I am facing more problems like if I press any control character or arrow I got three characters. For the up arrow I got ASCII 27 91 65. Can anyone help me out of this problem?

  • Which package from CPAN should I use to send mail?

    - by Uri
Which package from CPAN should I use to send mail? Sometime the timtowtdi approach is very tiring. For me, especially when it comes to package selection. So all I want is to send email, potentially HTML emails. Between Mail-Sendmail, Mail-Sender, NET-SMTP (by the way - not available in PPM), Mail-SendEasy, and the 80 or so other packages that have 'Mail' in their package name - which one should I choose? And while in this subject, what is your general apprach to choose the "canonical" package for a jog. I.e. the package that "everybody is using". Is there any rating or popularity billboard somewhere?

  • The use of GROUP BY in MySQL

    - by Gustav Bertram
    I'm fishing for a comprehensive and canonical answer for the typical "mysql group by?" question. Here is some sample data: TABLE A +------+------+----------+-----+ | id | foo | bar | baz | +------+------+----------+-----+ | 1 | 1 | hello | 42 | | 2 | 0 | apple | 96 | | 3 | 20 | boot | 11 | | 4 | 31 | unicorn | 99 | | 5 | 19 | pumpkin | 11 | | 6 | 88 | orange | 13 | +------+------+----------+-----+ TABLE B +------+------+ | id | moo | +------+------+ | 1 | 1 | | 2 | 99 | | 3 | 11 | +------+------+ Demonstrate and explain the correct use of the GROUP BY clause in MySQL. Touch upon the following points: The use of MIN, MAX, SUM, AVG The use of HAVING Grouping by date, and ranges of dates Grouping with an ORDER BY Grouping with a JOIN Grouping on multiple columns Bonus points for references to other great answers, the MySQL online manual, and online tutorials on GROUP BY.

  • SEO URL building - simple or hierarchy

    - by Pawel
I run an online shop and I wonder what would be more SEO-friendly URL for a product page: a) domain.com/category-name/product-name OR b) domain.com/product-name I already have URL-s for product category pages with format domain.com/category-name. On one hand I heard (but cannot find proof for) that Google like tree hierarchies in URL (vote for "a"). On the other hand though longer URL could lead to smaller kewyord density, also "product_name" comes as the last URL part so probably the least important (vote for "b"). Maybe both options are equally SEO-effective? PS. I know about canonical URL's but this is not the case, I don't want/need both URL's formats, just want to choose the best.

  • Fixing javascript Array functions in Internet Explorer (indexOf, forEach, etc)

    - by Chas Emerick
As detailed elsewhere, and otherwise apparently well-known, Internet Explorer (definitely 7, and in some instances, 8) do not implement key functions, in particular on Array (such as forEach, indexOf, etc). There are a number of workarounds here and there, but I'd like to fold a proper, canonical set of implementations into our site rather than copy and paste or hack away at our own implementations. I've found js-methods, which looks promising, but thought I'd post here to see whether another library comes more highly-recommended. A couple of misc. criteria: the lib should just be a no-op for those functions that a browser already has implementations for (js-methods appears to do quite well here) non-GPL, please, though LGPL is acceptable

  • How to save and load an array of complex numbers using numpy.savetxt?

    - by ptomato
I want to use numpy.savetxt() to save an array of complex numbers to a text file. Problems: If you save the complex array with the default format string, the imaginary part is discarded. If you use fmt='%s', then numpy.loadtxt() can't load it unless you specify dtype=complex, converters={0: lambda s: complex(s)}. Even then, if there are NaN's in the array, loading still fails. It looks like someone has inquired about this multiple times on the Numpy mailing list and even filed a bug, but has not gotten a response. Before I put something together myself, is there a canonical way to do this?

  • Find top N elements in a Multiset from Google Collections?

    - by dfrankow
A Google Collections Multiset is a set of elements each of which has a count (i.e. may be present multiple times). I can't tell you how many times I want to do the following Make a histogram (exactly Multiset) Get the top N values from the histogram Examples: top 10 URLs, top 10 tags, ... What is the canonical way to do #2 given a Multiset? Here is a blog post about it, but that code is not quite what I want. First, it returns everything, not just top N. Second, it copies (is it possible to avoid a copy?). Third, I usually want a deterministic sort, i.e. tiebreak if counts are equal.

  • Facebook like iframe ignores my specified href

    - by Zhami
I have Javascript that imputes (computes and injects) HTML into my DOM for the Facebook "Like" function. I need to specify a "canonical" URL because the actual URL doesn't reflect all the DOM manipulations that have been made (driven by user activity on the Web "page"). Alas, Facebook's code doesn't use the url I supply but the window.location value (which has #hash aspects that influence the page's presentation, but that aren't accessible to the server). Anyway... why is FB's code ignoring the url I give to it? I generate the HTML thus: var html = '<iframe src="http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=' + encodeURI(url) + '&layout=standard&show_faces=false&width=100&action=recommend&font=arial&colorscheme=light" style="border:none; overflow:hidden; width:270px; height:26px;" allowTransparency="true" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"</iframe'

  • nightmare with relative imports, how does pep 366 work?

    - by pygabriel
I have a "canonical file structure" like that (I'm giving sensible names to ease the reading): mainpack/ __main__.py __init__.py - helpers/ __init__.py path.py - network/ __init__.py clientlib.py server.py - gui/ __init__.py mainwindow.py controllers.py In this structure, for example modules contained in each package may want to access the helpers utilities through relative imports in something like: # network/clientlib.py from ..helpers.path import create_dir The program is runned "as a script" using the __main__.py file in this way: python mainpack/ Trying to follow the PEP 366 I've put in __main__.py these lines: ___package___ = "mainpack" from .network.clientlib import helloclient But when running: $ python mainpack Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python2.6/runpy.py", line 122, in _run_module_as_main "__main__", fname, loader, pkg_name) File "/usr/lib/python2.6/runpy.py", line 34, in _run_code exec code in run_globals File "path/mainpack/__main__.py", line 2, in <module> from .network.clientlib import helloclient SystemError: Parent module 'mainpack' not loaded, cannot perform relative import What's wrong? What is the correct way to handle and effectively use relative imports? I've tried also to add the current directory to the PYTHONPATH, nothing changes.

  • Why is C++ fwrite() producing larger output in release?

    - by waffleShirt
I recently wrote an implementation of the Canonical Huffman compression algorithm. I have a 500kb test file that can be compressed to about 250kb when running the debug and release builds from within Visual Studio 2008. However when I run the release build straight from the executeable the test file only compresses to about 330kb. I am assuming that something is going wrong when the file is written using fwrite(). I have tested the program and confirmed that uncompressing the files always produces the correct uncompressed file. Does anyone know why this could possibly be? How could the same executeable file be producing different sized outputs based on where it is launched from?

  • Best Practice for CouchDB Document Versioning

    - by Groundwater
    Following my question here I am exmploring ideas for a generic approach to document versioning in CouchDB. While I imagine there may be no canonical approach, I had the following idea and am looking for feedback. I would like to maintain readable document ids as much as possible, so a document existing at /document1 would contain a pointer document to all existing versions on the system. The actual revision documents would be at something like /document1/308ef032a3801a where 308ef032a3801a is some random number or hash. Example The pointer document { "_id" : "document1", "versions" : [ "document1/308ef032a3801a" ] } The version document { "_id" : "document1/308ef032a3801a", ... actual content }

  • Can I use RVM to maintain a single version of Ruby for all users?

    - by Trevor Burnham
I love RVM. I realize that the main use case for it is letting different users switch between different versions of Ruby. But let's say I'm deploying a Rails app to a server and I just want a single version of Ruby running. In particular, I want 1.9.2, which is a breeze to install with RVM but a pain without it. Is there a way that I can say "I want this to be the canonical Ruby installation for all users" (along with all of its gems) without having to create a bunch of symlinks by hand and change them every time I update to a newer Ruby release?

  • How does C++ free the memory when a constructor throws an exception and a custom new is used

    - by Joshua
I see the following constructs: new X will free the memory if X constructor throws. operator new() can be overloaded. The canonical definition of an operator new overload is void *operator new(heap h) and the corrisponding operator delete. The most common operator new overload is pacement new, which is void *operator new(void *p) { return p; } You almost always cannot call delete on the pointer given to placement new. This leads to a single question. How is memory cleaned up when X constructor throws and an overloaded new is used?

  • How can I print N array elements with delimiters per line?

    - by Mark B
    I have an array in Perl I want to print with space delimiters between each element, except every 10th element which should be newline delimited. There aren't any spaces in the elements if that matters. I've written a function to do it with for and a counter, but I wondered if there's a better/shorter/canonical Perl way, perhaps a special join syntax or similar. My function to illustrate: sub PrintArrayWithNewlines { my $counter = 0; my $newlineIndex = shift @_; foreach my $item (@_) { ++$counter; print "$item"; if($counter == $newlineIndex) { $counter = 0; print "\n"; } else { print " "; } } }

  • Capturing system command output as a string

    - by dreeves
Perl and PHP do this with backticks. For example: $output = `ls`; This code returns a directory listing into the variable $output. A similar function, system("ls"), returns the operating system return code for the given command. I'm talking about a variant that returns whatever the command prints to stdout. (There are better ways to get the list of files in a directory; the example code is an example of this concept.) How do other languages do this? Is there a canonical name for this function? (I'm going with "backtick"; though maybe I could coin "syslurp".)

  • LINQ query for tag system: Matching any of several tags?

    - by David Veeneman
I am just getting started with LINQ. I am creating an Entity Framework app that uses the canonical Post and Tag model. A Post contains an ID, Text, and Tags, and a Tag contains an ID, a Name, and Posts. A previous thread on StackOverflow showed me how to query for a Post that matches all Tag objects (A and B and C) in a search list. But how would I query for a Post that matches any Tag (A or B or C) in the list? Thanks for your help.

  • Using a custom URL parameter in Wordpress (with permalinks)?

    - by kiko
Hello - Is there a way to perhaps edit .htaccess to add a custom URL parameter to Wordpress, so that the parameter is not stripped out by permalinks? I have a Wordpress site with a page that queries a separate (non-Wordpress) database. I passed the URL parameter "pubID" to display individual books and it is working OK. Example: http://www.uglyducklingpresse.org/catalog/browse/item/?pubID=63 But the individual books are not showing up properly in Google - maybe because they all have the same auto-generated "canonical" URL meta tab - one with the "pubID" parameter stripped out. Thank you for any help.

  • What is the best signature for overloaded arithmetic operators in C++?

    - by JohnMcG
I had assumed that the canonical form for operator+, assuming the existence of an overloaded operator+= member function, was like this: const T operator+(const T& lhs, const T& rhs) { return T(lhs) +=rhs; } But it was pointed out to me that this would also work: const T operator+ (T lhs, const T& rhs) { return lhs+=rhs; } In essence, this form transfers creation of the temporary from the body of the implementation to the function call. It seems a little awkward to have different types for the two parameters, but is there anything wrong with the second form? Is there a reason to prefer one over the other?

  • Content Box is a Little Off in IE9 ... How to Fix?

  • How do you convert a parent-child (adjacency) table to a nested set using PHP and MySQL?

    - by mrbinky3000
I've spent the last few hours trying to find the solution to this question online. I've found plenty of examples on how to convert from nested set to adjacency... but few that go the other way around. The examples I have found either don't work or use MySQL procedures. Unfortunately, I can't use procedures for this project. I need a pure PHP solution. I have a table that uses the adjacency model below: id parent_id category 1 0 ROOT_NODE 2 1 Books 3 1 CD's 4 1 Magazines 5 2 Books/Hardcover 6 2 Books/Large Format 7 4 Magazines/Vintage And I would like to convert it to a Nested Set table below: id left right category 1 1 14 Root Node 2 2 7 Books 3 3 4 Books/Hardcover 4 5 6 Books/Large Format 5 8 9 CD's 6 10 13 Magazines 7 11 12 Magazines/Vintage Here is an image of what I need: I have a function, based on the pseudo code from this forum post (http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=320444) but it doesn't work. I get multiple rows that have the same value for left. This should not happen. <?php /** -- -- Table structure for table `adjacent_table` -- CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `adjacent_table` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `father_id` int(11) DEFAULT NULL, `category` varchar(128) DEFAULT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=8 ; -- -- Dumping data for table `adjacent_table` -- INSERT INTO `adjacent_table` (`id`, `father_id`, `category`) VALUES (1, 0, 'ROOT'), (2, 1, 'Books'), (3, 1, 'CD''s'), (4, 1, 'Magazines'), (5, 2, 'Hard Cover'), (6, 2, 'Large Format'), (7, 4, 'Vintage'); -- -- Table structure for table `nested_table` -- CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `nested_table` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `lft` int(11) DEFAULT NULL, `rgt` int(11) DEFAULT NULL, `category` varchar(128) DEFAULT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=1 ; */ mysql_connect('localhost','USER','PASSWORD') or die(mysql_error()); mysql_select_db('DATABASE') or die(mysql_error()); adjacent_to_nested(0); /** * adjacent_to_nested * * Reads a "adjacent model" table and converts it to a "Nested Set" table. * @param integer $i_id Should be the id of the "root node" in the adjacent table; * @param integer $i_left Should only be used on recursive calls. Holds the current value for lft */ function adjacent_to_nested($i_id, $i_left = 0) { // the right value of this node is the left value + 1 $i_right = $i_left + 1; // get all children of this node $a_children = get_source_children($i_id); foreach ($a_children as $a) { // recursive execution of this function for each child of this node // $i_right is the current right value, which is incremented by the // import_from_dc_link_category method $i_right = adjacent_to_nested($a['id'], $i_right); // insert stuff into the our new "Nested Sets" table $s_query = " INSERT INTO `nested_table` (`id`, `lft`, `rgt`, `category`) VALUES( NULL, '".$i_left."', '".$i_right."', '".mysql_real_escape_string($a['category'])."' ) "; if (!mysql_query($s_query)) { echo "<pre>$s_query</pre>\n"; throw new Exception(mysql_error()); } echo "<p>$s_query</p>\n"; // get the newly created row id $i_new_nested_id = mysql_insert_id(); } return $i_right + 1; } /** * get_source_children * * Examines the "adjacent" table and finds all the immediate children of a node * @param integer $i_id The unique id for a node in the adjacent_table table * @return array Returns an array of results or an empty array if no results. */ function get_source_children($i_id) { $a_return = array(); $s_query = "SELECT * FROM `adjacent_table` WHERE `father_id` = '".$i_id."'"; if (!$i_result = mysql_query($s_query)) { echo "<pre>$s_query</pre>\n"; throw new Exception(mysql_error()); } if (mysql_num_rows($i_result) > 0) { while($a = mysql_fetch_assoc($i_result)) { $a_return[] = $a; } } return $a_return; } ?> This is the output of the above script. INSERT INTO nested_table (id, lft, rgt, category) VALUES( NULL, '2', '5', 'Hard Cover' ) INSERT INTO nested_table (id, lft, rgt, category) VALUES( NULL, '2', '7', 'Large Format' ) INSERT INTO nested_table (id, lft, rgt, category) VALUES( NULL, '1', '8', 'Books' ) INSERT INTO nested_table (id, lft, rgt, category) VALUES( NULL, '1', '10', 'CD\'s' ) INSERT INTO nested_table (id, lft, rgt, category) VALUES( NULL, '10', '13', 'Vintage' ) INSERT INTO nested_table (id, lft, rgt, category) VALUES( NULL, '1', '14', 'Magazines' ) INSERT INTO nested_table (id, lft, rgt, category) VALUES( NULL, '0', '15', 'ROOT' ) As you can see, there are multiple rows sharing the lft value of "1" same goes for "2" In a nested-set, the values for left and right must be unique. Here is an example of how to manually number the left and right ID's in a nested set: UPDATE - PROBLEM SOLVED First off, I had mistakenly believed that the source table (the one in adjacent-lists format) needed to be altered to include a source node. This is not the case. Secondly, I found a cached page on BING (of all places) with a class that does the trick. I've altered it for PHP5 and converted the original author's mysql related bits to basic PHP. He was using some DB class. You can convert them to your own database abstraction class later if you want. Obviously, if your "source table" has other columns that you want to move to the nested set table, you will have to adjust the write method in the class below. Hopefully this will save someone else from the same problems in the future. <?php /** -- -- Table structure for table `adjacent_table` -- DROP TABLE IF EXISTS `adjacent_table`; CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `adjacent_table` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `father_id` int(11) DEFAULT NULL, `category` varchar(128) DEFAULT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=8 ; -- -- Dumping data for table `adjacent_table` -- INSERT INTO `adjacent_table` (`id`, `father_id`, `category`) VALUES (1, 0, 'Books'), (2, 0, 'CD''s'), (3, 0, 'Magazines'), (4, 1, 'Hard Cover'), (5, 1, 'Large Format'), (6, 3, 'Vintage'); -- -- Table structure for table `nested_table` -- DROP TABLE IF EXISTS `nested_table`; CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `nested_table` ( `lft` int(11) NOT NULL DEFAULT '0', `rgt` int(11) DEFAULT NULL, `id` int(11) DEFAULT NULL, `category` varchar(128) DEFAULT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`lft`), UNIQUE KEY `id` (`id`), UNIQUE KEY `rgt` (`rgt`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1; */ /** * @class tree_transformer * @author Paul Houle, Matthew Toledo * @created 2008-11-04 * @url http://gen5.info/q/2008/11/04/nested-sets-php-verb-objects-and-noun-objects/ */ class tree_transformer { private $i_count; private $a_link; public function __construct($a_link) { if(!is_array($a_link)) throw new Exception("First parameter should be an array. • The Sitemap Paradox

    - by Jeff Atwood
We use a sitemap on Stack Overflow, but I have mixed feelings about it. Web crawlers usually discover pages from links within the site and from other sites. Sitemaps supplement this data to allow crawlers that support Sitemaps to pick up all URLs in the Sitemap and learn about those URLs using the associated metadata. Using the Sitemap protocol does not guarantee that web pages are included in search engines, but provides hints for web crawlers to do a better job of crawling your site. Based on our two years' experience with sitemaps, there's something fundamentally paradoxical about the sitemap: Sitemaps are intended for sites that are hard to crawl properly. If Google can't successfully crawl your site to find a link, but is able to find it in the sitemap it gives the sitemap link no weight and will not index it! That's the sitemap paradox -- if your site isn't being properly crawled (for whatever reason), using a sitemap will not help you! Google goes out of their way to make no sitemap guarantees: "We cannot make any predictions or guarantees about when or if your URLs will be crawled or added to our index" citation "We don't guarantee that we'll crawl or index all of your URLs. For example, we won't crawl or index image URLs contained in your Sitemap." citation "submitting a Sitemap doesn't guarantee that all pages of your site will be crawled or included in our search results" citation Given that links found in sitemaps are merely recommendations, whereas links found on your own website proper are considered canonical ... it seems the only logical thing to do is avoid having a sitemap and make damn sure that Google and any other search engine can properly spider your site using the plain old standard web pages everyone else sees. By the time you have done that, and are getting spidered nice and thoroughly so Google can see that your own site links to these pages, and would be willing to crawl the links -- uh, why do we need a sitemap, again? The sitemap can be actively harmful, because it distracts you from ensuring that search engine spiders are able to successfully crawl your whole site. "Oh, it doesn't matter if the crawler can see it, we'll just slap those links in the sitemap!" Reality is quite the opposite in our experience. That seems more than a little ironic considering sitemaps were intended for sites that have a very deep collection of links or complex UI that may be hard to spider. In our experience, the sitemap does not help, because if Google can't find the link on your site proper, it won't index it from the sitemap anyway. We've seen this proven time and time again with Stack Overflow questions. Am I wrong? Do sitemaps make sense, and we're somehow just using them incorrectly?

  • Introducing the Oracle MDM Blog - Why All MDM Solutions Aren't Equal

    - by ken.pulverman
Welcome to the Oracle MDM Blog.  Dave Butler, Tony Ouk, and myself - Ken Pulverman, will be bringing you news and information from the world of MDM at Oracle.  Dave is our resident expert with more than 30 years of experience in data and information management. Tony has deep expertise in our Exadata product line which provides a strong hardware synergy with MDM.  I come from Siebel Systems where I helped found the team that built our integration product line and then our Universal Customer Master with is part of our MDM offering at Oracle. I thought I'd hit the ground running with a topic we are going to want to continue to bend your ear about.  We had a recent meeting with Ford Goodman, our head of MDM commercial sales in the US and he was very fired up about and important topic.  He's irked that all MDM solutions get painted with the same brush even though they aren't the same at all. There are companies out there trying to represent frameworks and toolkits as out of the box solutions.  They give you the pleasure (read pain) of doing things like developing your own multi-application data model, building your own web services, or creating your own APIs.  Huh?  What gets sold as flexibility in reality is a barrier to ever going live.  At Siebel Systems we obsessed over the notion of a customer.  Our data model took over 10 years to perfect as defining a customer is a very complex task indeed.  There are divisions, subsidiaries, branches, acquisitions, sites etc., etc., etc..  You'll want to do your homework, but trust me - you aren't going to want to take the time or resource to build these canonical data structures yourself.  And what about APIs?  Again, it sounds flexible.  In reality it's a lot of work. Our DNA at Oracle is to reduce the cost of information technology so we pre-integrate our technology with all of our major applications and pre-build integrations and connectors for all the major systems you work with.  This is tedious work that requires detailed knowledge of the interfaces of all the applications involved.  It is also version specific as the interface features and technology are always changing.  We have a substantial organization to manage this complexity so you don't have to.  Suffice to say, we'd like to help our customers peel back the rhetoric of companies that fly the MDM flag without a real offering that you can quickly benefit from. Please watch this space for more information on this storyline as well as news and information around Oracle MDM.

  • Can't fix broken packages

    - by AWE
I am too dumb but determined to use Ubuntu that I paid a professional to install it for me (dualboot 11.10 with Win7). When I came home I got a lot of things from the software center. Skype did not have a download button so I googled it and Ubuntu help told me to do this: sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" and then this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install skype The terminal told me "that this is potentially harmful..." but I thought it was Ubuntu language meaning "are you sure?" Now the computer is mute. Items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired, so I want to repair it but the package operation fails. "sudo aptitude -f install" - command not found Synaptic package manager tells me that I have two broken packages, libc6 and libc6-dev so I do this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade which tells me to do this: sudo apt-get -f install that ends up like this: Can't exec "locale": No such file or directory at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Encoding.pm line 16.
