• Linux software to maintain old/backup versions of directory tree

  I am replacing an old Linux file server serving NFS and CIFS. For the new server (still serving CIFS and NFS), I would like to have software that automatically and efficiently maintains old revisions of files in parallel trees, so that they can be accessed by users without special tools. I am looking for software that is akin to Time Machine or Flyback, but works well on a server. The dataset is some 10000 files weighing maybe 60 GB. Changes are relatively few, usually less than 100 files changes daily. Using LVM snapshots will not cut it, as the old revisions must reside on a separate set of disks from the live data. Edit: To clarify: keeping old revisions is non-vital addition to the solution, so any suggestion will have to stay in the range of some hundred euros.

  Is there something equivalent to WebDrive but free or open source ? Update: I want on Windows if possible and be able to save a file on a virtual ftp drive from any software. I know already I can type "ftp://[email protected]" into an Explorer address as suggested below but that doesn't transform it into a true virtual drive as i cannot save file from notepad for example.

• Where to store short strings (with my key) on the internet?

  Is there simple service to store strings under my key that can be used by bots? Requirements: Simple command line access, automatic posting allowed No need to keep some session with the service alive I choose the key (so pastebins fail) No requirement for registration/authentication (for simplicity) The string should be kept for about a month. I want something like: Store: $ echo some_data_0x1299C0FF | store_my_string testtest2011 Retrieve: $ retrive_my_string testtest2011 some_data_0x1299C0FF Do you have ideas what should I use for it? I can only think of using IRC somehow (channel topics, /whowas, ...), but this is too complex for this simple task. No security is needed: anyone can update my string. At the same time I think 60% of the digital-music listeners have this track. Sometimes we have multiple copies: different versions of the track, different devices, unwanted duplicates in download folders, itunes folders etc.. • How do multi-platform games usually store save data?

  I realize this is a bit of a broad question, but I was wondering if there is a "standard" in the industry when it comes to storing save data for games (and is it different across platforms - Xbox/PS/PC/Mac/Android/iOS?) For example for a game like Assassin's Creed or The Walking Dead: They are on multiple platforms and they usually have to save enough information about the player and their actions. Do they use something like XML files, databases, or just straight binary dumps? How much does it differ from platform to platform? I would appreciate it if someone with experience in the game industry would answer this.

  I'm interested in being able to create realistic faces and facial expressions for the 3D characters of a game I'm working on. Think something similar to the dialog scenes in games like Mass Effect. Unfortunately I'm not sure where to begin. I'm sure the faces/animations are created through 3D Modeling software, but otherwise I am lost. Do facial animations use the same "bones" that normal body animation uses? Is there any preferred 3D software for realistic faces and animations? Is there a preferred format to export these faces and animations in?

• Carbonite Restore Error after Windows Update

  I recently installed Windows 8 on my main machine, and I'm have an issue with Carbonite. I can't restore any files from my previous OS, only files that where backed up from the current OS. I can download them from the web service, but I can't restore them with the client. The error says "You don't have the necessary security permissions to restore this file." (The file on top was backed up from the new install, while the one on bottom was from the old install.) I'm also having another issue, where Carbonite doesn't think it's running in admin mode. I think it's probably related to this error. When I right click to restore a file, I can't choose a location to restore to. I contacted Carbonite, and they said it's a known issue that apparently happens when upgrade from XP to 7, but they wouldn't help me since I'm running a beta OS. Hopefully one of you fine folks will have an idea.

  I'm preparing to change my old LCD monitor for a new one. I have an old NEC 20WGX2 Pro based on an IPS panel. I'm looking for a screen that gives good color output but is very good at gaming at the same time (since it is its primary service). I tend to switch monitors between my different computers at home so it has to be multi purpose, hence IPS technology before.   I've been working on an online 2 player Tic Tac Toe solution for blackberries. both old and new. And so far I have html5 code that has a 3 x 3 layout that switches between x and o for the game mechanics. I believe I'm still missing a check for win function but my question is about the server side of this game. I'm not sure how to go about learning what exactly I want. how do you take what I have now, and make this into a functioning online game? Skeletal framing may be another. But how about the physics? • How to add a shortcut for Humble Bundle games in Unity?

  I downloaded some games from the humblebundle, but most of them don't have deb files. They run fine after extracting them and double clicking on the executable, but unity doesn't automatically find them so I can't search for them, or add them to the side bar. I tried to drag the executable onto the side bar, but it just dimmed and didn't do anything once I dropped it. I also tried to right-click on the executable in and clicked on "Make Link", but I couldn't drop that onto the side bar either. I would prefer a solution that does not require using the terminal or editing configuration files by hand if possible.
