• Migrate TFS 2010 Application Tier to another server on the same domain

  I'm in the process of looking into the possibility of moving our TFS 2010 Application Tier to another server from the one it is on at the moment so that we can repurpose the hardware. I've been looking through the Microsoft Documentation over at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms404869.aspx, but this assumes that everything is stored on one box (Application and Data tiers). In my setup however, our Data tier is separate to the Application tier and will be staying where it is. I think I should be able to do this but for my own peace of mind, would there be any issues or implications if I merely installed the Application Tier on the new hardware and then connected it to the existing data tier?

• Connecting via ShrewSoft VPN client means no LAN internet access (Windows 7 64 bit) - any advice please?

  I have a Windows 7 64 bit desktop machine which is connected to a LAN. I recently installed ShrewSoft VPN client v 2.1.7 on my machine so that I can connect to a license server hosted by my customer. They are running a Cisco VPN server and I originally tried (unsuccessfully!) to use the Cisco VPN client for Windows 64 bit but the default gateway wasn't being configured correctly after loading in my pcf file. Using ShrewSoft I am able to import the same pcf file, and successfully connect to the machine I need to using the VPN client software. The client machine I need to connect to has IP address 1.52.90.33. The problem is that when I am connected to the customer network using the VPN client application (and after a few minutes) I lose my LAN internet connection. I can only presume that this is because, by default the ShrewSoft VPN client application automatically tunnels all traffic through the VPN connection. I know there is an option to switch off the "Tunnel All" option on the Policy tab of the application and enter a Remote Network Resource (to "Include" or "Exclude") as "Address" and "Netmask" IP addresses however I am not sure what I need to enter here. • How do I prevent internet access to a group of computers on my network?

  Well I have the following setup... Computer A , B and C are networked.... Computer A is connected to the internet, computer B and C are not setup for internet access currently but I guess its possible with some kind of setting they would eventually be able to access the internet and this is what I would like to prevent. In summary only A should have internet access while A and B and C should still be on intranet. Is this kind of config possible?, what kind of software or setup or tools would I need to achive this?

• switch duplicates packets and forward in two route

  there is a network including a router, two hosts and a switch which connects hosts to router. i have a virtual machine on my system. the network adapter is set to act as bridge. so the virtual machine and real OS are my 2 hosts on different LAN. they use one network card and are connected to a switch. when each of host send a packet to the other one, the switch duplicate the packet and forward it to both router and the other host. how can I solve the duplicate packet problem? • How can I share data from a Samsung Wave Mobile phone with the Mac OS?

  This is driving me up the wall just a bit. I have a new Samsung Wave mobile phone. It is running the Bada OS. The mobile phone does not come with anyone software for the Mac. The Kies desktop interface is only available for Windows. I did try installing the Kies software in a VM with Parallels 5 but it did not detect the phone connected via USB. I tried using Bluetooth file exchange on the Mac; it lets me browse the file system on the Wave phone but not actually see any of the media files; I just get empty directory views. But I am able to access files using media sharing with the Wave phone and my PS3. So what would be a Mac desks top app that can be used a media sharing browser?

• Two routers, one off-site, same ISP-assigned static IP. A recipe for conflict?

  This is the situation I've inherited: There are two routers, one off-site. Both are connected to the ISP. The ISP assigns both of them the same static IP (or so it seems). Presumably, the network problems we're having are related to the idea that you can't have two instances of the same IP. So we rang up the folk off-site and told them to turn off the router. Now everything's working okay here. How do I get around this? Get another static IP? Figure out how to get the router to ask for a dynamic IP (as we're not using the static IP for anything)?

• When can an FTP server close its passive connections?

  Does the FTP protocol allow the server to close any of its passive connections while the client is still connected? Can it tell when the client is finished receiving and then close the connection? I'm including an FTP server in my application using the pyftpdlib Python project. I've got it to work in active and passive mode, but I'm a bit concerned about when it closes its passive connections. I've tried connecting to it with both FileZilla and the default ftp command in Ubuntu, and in both cases, I get a new passive port for every request. That is, if I sit in the root folder and type ls 10 times, I use up 10 ports. This means that I have to allocate a big block of passive ports for the FTP server to use so it won't run out. As soon as the client disconnects, the server releases all the passive connections associated with that client and those ports can be reused. However, a long-running connection could use up a lot of ports.

  I have a MacBook Pro and I'm going to buy a Boxee Box. I have access to wireless internet, but it's slow and out of my control. So my question is, what is the best way for both devices to get internet access, and the Boxee Box to get SMB access to the Mac, when only the Mac is connected to the wireless internet? I'm thinking an ethernet cable from the Boxee Box to my Mac, and connection sharing on my Mac. Can you explain the setup, is there any configuring.

• ServerName no longer works as SQL Server 2008 Default instance name?

  Folks, Somehow in struggling to install something (Sage MIP), I have unsettled my system's SQL Server 2008 instance names. If I fired up SSMS and connected to "MySystemName" (while logged into MySystemName), I used to immediately connect and could view my databases. Now if I connect to "(local)" or "." I connect just fine...but "MySystemName" gives me a timeout error. If I log in with "." and do "SELECT @@SERVERNAME" it comes back with "MySystemName" just fine. I've double checked that my network name is in the Security\Logins list, and it is, as a dbadmin. Any suggestions? I thought that having SQL Server 2005 Express might be a problem (the "battle of the default instances"), so I uninstalled that. No better.

• Canon HV20 recognized, but no drivers in Windows 7 x64

  My Canon HV20 camcorder is properly recognized when connected via Firewire to Windows 7 x64, but no drivers are installed for it. Windows or I cannot locate any drivers for it as, but it should be working off-the-shelf. I googled a lot, and found instructions to set IEEE 1394 host to legacy mode via Device Manager, but Windows doesn't offer me the legacy option at all. If I check the properties of Canon&HV20 device in Other devices section it says The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. It used to work just fine on my previous installation of Vista x64 and same hardware :/

• Mini DV and DVI Conversion

  Video card is: AMD HD 6950 My video card comes with 1xHDMI, 2xDVI, and 2xMini DV ports. I have always used VGA and DVI only. I have the HDMI already connected. I want to hook up 2 more display. One of the display can take a VGA only, the other is an LCD TV so it has VGA, HDMI, Component. I am wondering: 1) What is the best output port to use for the second two monitors? The miniDV or the DVI? 2) I need to run a long cable maybe 15-25 feet, this might change the answer to question 1, is an HDMI long cable 20+ ft going to be better than a 20ft DVI or miniDV ?

• Blocked port 25 on Windows 7 64 bit

  Strange problem. I have 2 computers connected to Wifi router. One with Windows Vista & second with 2 operating systems: SUSe Linux and Windows 7 64bit on it. Computer with Vista can connect to SMTP server of my email provider (and any other) using port 25, and can connect to a mail server using telnet mail.server.com 25 if this port is open. Computer with dual operating system can (using Linux) do the same. The same computer, with the same hardware (Wifi card etc.), and using the same WiFi router, cannot however use Port 25 and cannot Telnet into any smtp server. So the problem is in Windows 7. I did uninstall all antivirus software and disabled the firewall. The problem is still here. Is there way how find out which software is blocking this port?

• How can I determine what is causing SQL Server 2008 Express to hang Windows 7?

  I have SQL Server Express 2008 installed on a Windows 7 (32-bit) developer workstation. Whenever I run an application that accesses SQL Server the Windows 7 shell hangs when the application closes. Applications like Windows Explorer and Task Manager become completely unresponsive. The task bar will not allow any interaction. The only way to recover the system is to power cycle. Two of the applications in use when this happens are NUnit and SQL Server Management Studio. NUnit always runs the unit tests that interact with the database fine. SQL Server Management Studio will sometimes cause the problem while trying to explore the database. The Windows event log does not show any events that are obviously connected to the problem. I have reverted and reinstalled SQL Server Express 2008 several times. What can be done to identify what is causing SQL Server Express 2008 to hang the Windows 7 shell?

• Make the Windows 8 Mail app sync and notify Gmail labels

  My Windows 8 Mail app is connected with Gmail, and is set to sync emails and download emails on arrival. Most of my mail isn't going to the inbox, but is going straight to different labels. Say, all work related mail is going straight to the label Work. The problem is that when I have unread email in Work, the Mail app will not tell me. It will only display a label, Work, I can click on, not Work (1) indicating unread mails. When clicking the label, I will need to wait for some time for it to actually download and sync the mail before anything shows. Even if I tried force syncing just before. So: The Mail app is not syncing my labels, and will not give any visuals that a label contains unread mail. Is there any way to achieve this? Without it, the Mail app is unfortunately pretty useless to me.

  I have a situation here, is kind of weird. Situation as below: If i enable the 'Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 27CC' , then my pc will not be able to read any USB stick/pendrive, but usb port work fine with keyboard and mouse. If I disable the device driver, then all kind of pendrive can be read. Below is What i have done : 1) try the same pendrive on other pc, it work like charm. 2) try others pendrive on issue pc, same problem, but it work fine in others pc. 3) try all the port, including the port that connected to mouse n keyboard. 4) update the driver version. 5) restore default setting of usb in bios Please help to solve these issue if anyone experience it before. • Enable/disable wireless interface in a bat file

  Is there a way to enable/disable a wireless network interface via the command line (so I can put it in a bat file)? When I'm in the office I use a wired connection, but Windows still occasionally bugs me about my wireless connection not being connected (even though I turned off the option for notifying me when there's no connectivity). I'm guessing the only way to stop it from bugging me is to disable the interface, but I'd rather not have to go into the network settings every time I need to do so. I'd like to set up a bat file or a shortcut that I can use to enable/disable the wireless (preferably a single one that toggles the current state), and then just set up a keyboard shortcut for that. I just have no idea how to do so from the command line.

• YUM and RPM crash due to the liblua-5.1 library being missing

  I've been playing around with a LiveUsb install of basic Fedora with persistence. I attempted to install moonscript, which requires Lua and LuaRocks. After installing Lua and discovering there were flaws in the install which prevented LuaRocks from working, I used rpm to force Lua off so I could use yum to re-install it. The result was an error of this sort being yielded by both rpm and yum: There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: liblua-5.1.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I've concluded from this that my Lua version installed a library which both yum and rpm are now connected to. Is there anyway to fix this without reformatting my drive and installing everything from scratch?

• How to fix unstable RJ45 jacks? [closed]

  This is a little project I'm doing at home. I wanted to wire two rooms together (basically, the router is one room, and the switch is in the second room). So I ran a CAT5 between the two rooms, and wired an RJ45 jack in each room. I then hooked up the two jacks with two CAT5 cable to run it through the cable tester, and all 8 wires seem good. Now, when I connect the switch and the router, the connection is unstable -- I ping the router and it barely holds on for two pings before it disconnects, and stays in that unstable state. Just to make sure the router and the switch are ok, I connected them with long wire between the two rooms and the connection is absolutely stable, and pings continuously. What could be the cause for the unstable connection? Especially that it pings a few times, so there IS a connection. But why is it unstable? And how come the cable tester says it's ok, but it's unstable?

  Can a custom DPI setting be applied to Remote Desktop sessions? When you try to change the DPI from a Remote Desktop session, you get a message that display settings can't be changed from a remote session. That made me think that changing DPI from a console setting would work. It did, sort of. If I connected via Remote Desktop to an existing console session with a custom DPI setting, that setting would be applied to the Remote Desktop session. However, if I logged off that session, the custom DPI would not be applied to subsequent Remote Desktop sessions even though it was maintained for subsequent console sessions. It looks like the registry value HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\AppliedDPI (and perhaps other values) is overwritten at logon, but I haven't been able figure out how to prevent it.

• Debian PPTP VPN can't get out to the internet

  I've setup a Debian pptp server which seems to be running fine. I can successfully access the local services on the server when connected to the VPN, but I cannot go out of the LAN, i.e. I cannot just go to any server out on the internet. I guess this is come kind of routing issue that won't allow me to use the server as a gateway? I couldn't really find any articles or similar that could tell me how to set this up properly.   I have two computers networked through a Netgear WG914 router which is connected to an Ipstar satellite modem via the RG47 LAN connector. The main computer is running Windows 7 Pro 64bit and the secondary computer is running Windows 7 Home Edition 32bit. On occasion there is a loss of internet connection usually on the main computer, often followed by a loss on the secondary comuter. Not, however, always the case. Windows troubleshooter, naturally, is about as much use as a politician in government.......NONE. There appears to be no problem with the ISP bad as it is and often the connection will be remade without any help from me. The difference in the OS's is not of any relevance since I had this problem before I changed over to Windows 7. Not being a nerd when it comes to networking I wonder if anyone has any constructive suggestions.

• Connecting office to data center via Metro-ethernet

  I am installing a metro ethernet link from my office to my data center. The office will have a cisco 3750 with several vlans. The data center end will have a more complicated set up. The metro e from the office will connect to a 2960, which will have two other 2960s with a few vlans and a 2811 router connected to it for connectivity to our other environments and the internet. I am looking at implementing this by connecting the office 3750 and the data center 2960 with a dot1q trunk and doing all routing at the 2811. I will configure subinterfaces for gateways for each of the vlans on the 2811. I work for a small company and don't have much of a budget for an ideal architecture. I can post a simple diagram if needed for clarification. Is there anything I am missing here? I feel like I am forgetting something very basic and want to make sure I eliminate any boneheaded mistakes.

• USB Hub powers down in sleep mode on Win 7 64

  This question has been asked before but not answered. I would like the USB hub to remain on in sleep so I can wake up the laptop from an external keyboard and mouse. I have set all the device drivers by unchecking allow this device to be powered down and disabled selective suspend in control panel but the hub still powers down. If I plug a keyboard or mouse directly in to the PC they remain powered and wake the computer its only when they are connected through the hub there is a problem. I have another PC running Win 7 32. If I set this up in exactly the same way the hub remains powered in sleep. Both PC's are Toshiba Satellites with multi-core celerons but one runs Win 7 32 the other Win 7 64. BIOS settings are the same. Any help would be appreciated even confirmation that this is a feature of Win 7 64.

• Using PVLANs with normal VLANs in a trunked environment

  Assume a trunked environment with two switches, S1 and S2. The swtiches are connected with a trunk port designed to pass VLAN 26. What would happen if VLAN 26 on S2 is configured as a private-vlan with the default gateway and DHCP server and default gateway as promisc ports. What if S1's VLAN 26 is configured as a standard VLAN. Would the hosts on S1 be able to communicate with the promisc ports on S2? Would they be able to communicate with the hosts on S2? To further complicate things what if the DHCP server were to reside on S1 and I wanted S2 to have private VLANS with promisc ports as the gateway and DHCP server while still leaving S1 in a standard vlan configuration.
