  • Detect collision from a particular side

    - by Fabián
I'm making a platform sidescrolling game. All I want to do is to detect if my character is on the floor: function OnCollisionStay (col : Collision){ if(col.gameObject.tag == "Floor"){ onFloor = true; } else {onFloor = false;} } function OnCollisionExit (col : Collision){ onFloor = false; } But I know this isn't the accurate way. If I hit a cube with a "floor" tag, in the air (no matter if with the character's feet or head) I would be able to jump. Is there a way to use the same box collision to detect if I'm touching something from a specific side?

  • Calculus? Need help solving for a time-dependent variable given some other variables.

    - by user451527
Long story short, I'm making a platform game. I'm not old enough to have taken Calculus yet, so I know not of derivatives or integrals, but I know of them. The desired behavior is for my character to automagically jump when there is a block to either side of him that is above the one he's standing on; for instance, stairs. This way the player can just hold left / right to climb stairs, instead of having to spam the jump key too. The issue is with the way I've implemented jumping; I've decided to go mario-style, and allow the player to hold 'jump' longer to jump higher. To do so, I have a 'jump' variable which is added to the player's Y velocity. The jump variable increases to a set value when the 'jump' key is pressed, and decreases very quickly once the 'jump' key is released, but decreases less quickly so long as you hold the 'jump' key down, thus providing continuous acceleration up as long as you hold 'jump.' This also makes for a nice, flowing jump, rather than a visually jarring, abrupt acceleration. So, in order to account for variable stair height, I want to be able to calculate exactly what value the 'jump' variable should get in order to jump exactly to the height of the stair; preferably no more, no less, though slightly more is permissible. This way the character can jump up steep or shallow flights of stairs without it looking weird or being slow. There are essentially 5 variables in play: h -the height the character needs to jump to reach the stair top<br> j -the jump acceleration variable<br> v -the vertical velocity of the character<br> p -the vertical position of the character<br> d -initial vertical position of the player minus final position<br> Each timestep:<br> j -= 1.5; //the jump variable's deceleration<br> v -= j; //the jump value's influence on vertical speed<br> v *= 0.95; //friction on the vertical speed<br> v += 1; //gravity<br> p += v; //add the vertical speed to the vertical position<br> v-initial is known to be zero<br> v-final is known to be zero<br> p-initial is known<br> p-final is known<br> d is known to be p-initial minus p-final<br> j-final is known to be zero<br> j-initial is unknown<br> Given all of these facts, how can I make an equation that will solve for j? tl;dr How do I Calculus? Much thanks to anyone who's made it this far and decides to plow through this problem.

  • Should UTF-16 be considered harmful?

    - by Artyom
I'm going to ask what is probably quite a controversial question: "Should one of the most popular encodings, UTF-16, be considered harmful?" Why do I ask this question? How many programmers are aware of the fact that UTF-16 is actually a variable length encoding? By this I mean that there are code points that, represented as surrogate pairs, take more than one element. I know; lots of applications, frameworks and APIs use UTF-16, such as Java's String, C#'s String, Win32 APIs, Qt GUI libraries, the ICU Unicode library, etc. However, with all of that, there are lots of basic bugs in the processing of characters out of BMP (characters that should be encoded using two UTF-16 elements). For example, try to edit one of these characters: 𝄞 (U+1D11E) MUSICAL SYMBOL G CLEF 𝕥 (U+1D565) MATHEMATICAL DOUBLE-STRUCK SMALL T 𝟶 (U+1D7F6) MATHEMATICAL MONOSPACE DIGIT ZERO 𠂊 (U+2008A) Han Character You may miss some, depending on what fonts you have installed. These characters are all outside of the BMP (Basic Multilingual Plane). If you cannot see these characters, you can also try looking at them in the Unicode Character reference. For example, try to create file names in Windows that include these characters; try to delete these characters with a "backspace" to see how they behave in different applications that use UTF-16. I did some tests and the results are quite bad: Opera has problem with editing them (delete required 2 presses on backspace) Notepad can't deal with them correctly (delete required 2 presses on backspace) File names editing in Window dialogs in broken (delete required 2 presses on backspace) All QT3 applications can't deal with them - show two empty squares instead of one symbol. Python encodes such characters incorrectly when used directly u'X'!=unicode('X','utf-16') on some platforms when X in character outside of BMP. Python 2.5 unicodedata fails to get properties on such characters when python compiled with UTF-16 Unicode strings. StackOverflow seems to remove these characters from the text if edited directly in as Unicode characters (these characters are shown using HTML Unicode escapes). WinForms TextBox may generate invalid string when limited with MaxLength. It seems that such bugs are extremely easy to find in many applications that use UTF-16. So... Do you think that UTF-16 should be considered harmful?

  • Why is this default template parameter not allowed?

    - by Matt Joiner
I have the following class: template <typename Type = void> class AlignedMemory { public: AlignedMemory(size_t alignment, size_t size) : memptr_(0) { int iret(posix_memalign((void **)&memptr_, alignment, size)); if (iret) throw system_error("posix_memalign"); } virtual ~AlignedMemory() { free(memptr_); } operator Type *() const { return memptr_; } Type *operator->() const { return memptr_; } //operator Type &() { return *memptr_; } //Type &operator[](size_t index) const; private: Type *memptr_; }; And attempt to instantiate an automatic variable like this: AlignedMemory blah(512, 512); This gives the following error: src/cpfs/entry.cpp:438: error: missing template arguments before ‘buf’ What am I doing wrong? Is void not an allowed default parameter?

  • How do I implement smooth movement in a Box2D platform game?

    - by Romeo
I have implemented a character in JBox2D which moves with the help of a wheel rotating at the bottom of it. The movement is the best result I've had 'till now but it's a little glitchy when the character stands on the edge. So I am thinking should I use five smaller wheels instead of a big wheel. The wheel/wheels will not be visible in the finished product, now they are drawn for debugging. Here is a video. Is there a better way to do this using JBox2D?

  • 2d Ice movement

    - by Jeremy Clarkson
I am building an top-down 2d RPG like zelda. I have been trying to implement ice sliding. I have a tile with the slide property. I thought it would be easy to get working. I figured that I would read the slide property, and move the character forward until the slide property no longer exists. So I tried a loop but all it did was stop at the first tile in an infinite loop. I then took the loop out and tried taking direct control of the character to move him along the slide path but I couldn't get it to move. Is there an easy way to do an ice sliding tile based movement in libgdx. I looked for a tutorial but none exist.

  • Is there a way to export all the images of my tweening effect in Flash?

    - by Paul
i'm using Flash to create the animation of my character in 2D (i'm just beginning). Is it possible to make a tween effect of a character, and then automatically export all the images/frames? So far, it's a bit fastidious : i create my tweening effect, then i put a keyframe for each frame i want to copy and paste, then i select the movieclips and shapes and copy and paste them into another flash document, i position those clips at the exact same location as the previous image, then i erase the previous image and export the image... For 30 frames! Is there any faster way? Thanks

  • Replacing LF, NEL line endings in text file with CR+LF

    - by Tomas Lycken
I have a text file with a strange character encoding that I'd like to convert to standard UTF-8. I have managed to get part of the way: $ file myfile.txt myfile.txt: Non-ISO extended-ASCII text, with LF, NEL line endings $ iconv -f ascii -t utf-8 myfile.txt > myfile.txt.utf8 $ file myfile.txt.utf8 myfile.txt.utf8: UTF-8 Unicode text, with LF, NEL line endings ## edit myfile.txt.utf8 using nano, to fix failed character conversions (mostly åäö) $ file myfile.txt.utf8 myfile.txt.utf8: UTF-8 Unicode text, with LF, NEL line endings However, I can't figure out how to convert the line endings. How do I do to replace LF+NEL with CR+LF (or whatever is the standard)? When I'm done, I'd like to see the following: $ file myfile.txt myfile.txt: UTF-8 Unicode text

  • how difficult to add vibration/feedback to a open source driving game

    - by Jonathan Day
Hi, I'm looking to use SuperTuxKart as a basis for a PhD research project. A key requirement for the game is to provide vibration feedback through the controller (obviously dependant on the controller itself). I don't believe that the game currently includes this feature and I'm trying to get a feel for how big a challenge it would be to add. My background is as a J2EE and PHP developer/architect, so I don't know C++ as such, but am prepared to give it a crack if there are resources and guides to assist, and it's not a herculean task. Alternatively, if you know of any open source games that do include vibration feedback, please feel free to let me know! Preferably the game would be of the style that the player had to navigate a character (or character's vehicle) over a repeatable course/map. TIA, JD

  • Can I use remade sprites in my game?

    - by John Skridles
Can I use remade sprites in my game? I am making a game and I used some sprites, but I didn't copy them. I remade them completely the character looks nothing like the original. I only did this to get the movement of the character right (moving, running, jumping, punching). I've been working on the game for a long time, so I really need to know is it safe and legal to do this. I do intend making a small profit.

  • How do I tackle top down RPG movement?

    - by WarmWaffles
I have a game that I am writing in Java. It is a top down RPG and I am trying to handle movement in the world. The world is largely procedural and I am having a difficult time tackling how to handle character movement around the world and render the changes to the screen. I have the world loaded in blocks which contains all the tiles. How do I tackle the character movement? I am stumped and can't figure out where I should go with it. EDIT: Well I was abstract with the issue at hand. Right now I can only think of rigidly sticking everything into a 2D array and saving the block ID and the player offset in the Block or I could just "float" everything and move about between tiles so to speak.

  • Tips and Tools for creating Spritesheet animations

    - by Spooks
I am looking for a tool that I can use to create sprite sheet easily. Right now I am using Illustrator, but I can never get the center of the character in the exact position, so it looks like it is moving around(even though its always in one place), while being loop through the sprite sheet. Is there any better tools that I can be using? Also what kind of tips would you give for working with a sprite sheet? Should I create each part of the character in individual layers (left arm, right arm, body, etc.) or everything at once? any other tips would also be helpful! thank you

  • What is your preferred font for working with code and data?

    - by Gary
The features I would look for in a 'programmers' font are Monospaced (maybe less important for code, but more important for data) Distinguishable characters. Often I (uppercase i), 1 (one) and l (lower-case L) can be confusing, as can O (upper-case o) and 0 (zero). I'd be interested other character issues, especially in accented or extended character sets. Free Windows / Linux / OSX Legible on screen and printouts at smaller sizes I've community wiki'd this. I'm really looking for a list of fonts that qualify. From that list, people can pick what looks good to them.

  • How can I achieve a 3D-like effect with spritebatch's rotation and scale parameters

    - by Alic44
I'm working on a 2d game with a top-down perspective similar to Secret of Mana and the 2D Final Fantasy games, with one big difference being that it's an action rpg using a 3-dimensional physics engine. I'm trying to draw an aimer graphic (basically an arrow) at my characters' feet when they're aiming a ranged weapon. At first I just converted the character's aim vector to radians and passed that into spritebatch, but there was a problem. The position of every object in my world is scaled for perspective when it's drawn to the screen. So if the physics engine coordinates are (1, 0, 1), the screen coords are actually (1, .707) -- the Y and Z axis are scaled by a perspective factor of .707 and then added together to get the screen coordinates. This meant that the direction the aimer graphic pointed (thanks to its rotation value passed into spritebatch) didn't match up with the direction the projectile actually traveled over time. Things looked fine when the characters fired left, right, up, or down, but if you fired on a diagonal the perspective of the physics engine didn't match with the simplistic way I was converting the character's aim direction to a screen rotation. Ok, fast forward to now: I've got the aimer's rotation matched up with the path the projectile will actually take, which I'm doing by decomposing a transform matrix which I build from two rotation matrices (one to represent the aimer's rotation, and one to represent the camera's 45 degree rotation on the x axis). My question is, is there a way to get not just rotation from a series of matrix transformations, but to also get a Vector2 scale which would give the aimer the appearance of being a 3d object, being warped by perspective? Orthographic perspective is what I'm going for, I think. So, the aimer arrow would get longer when facing sideways, and shorter when facing north and south because of the perspective. At the same time, it would get wider when facing north and south, and less wide when facing right or left. I'd like to avoid actually drawing the aimer texture in 3d because I'm still using spritebatch's layerdepth parameter at this point in my project, and I don't want to have to figure out how to draw a 3d object within the depth sorting system I already have. I can provide code and more details if this is too vague as a question... This is my first post on stack exchange. Thanks a lot for reading! Note: (I think) I realize it can't be a technically correct 3D perspective, because the spritebatch's vector2 scaling argument doesn't allow for an object to be skewed the way it actually should be. What I'm really interested in is, is there a good way to fake the effect, or should I just drop it and not scale at all? Edit to clarify without the help of a picture (apparently I can't post them yet): I want the aimer arrow to look like it has been painted on the ground at the character's feet, so it should appear to be drawn on the ground plane (in my case the XZ plane) which should be tilted at a 45 degree angle (around the X axis) from the viewing perspective. • Netbeans Java SE GUI Builder: private initComponents() problem

    - by maSnun
When I build a GUI for my Java SE app with Netbeans GUI builder, it puts all the codes in the initComponents() method which is private. I could not change it to public. So, all the components are accessible only to the class containing the UI. I want to access those components from another class so that I can write custom event handlers and everything. Most importantly I want to separate my GUI code and non-GUI from each other. I can copy paste the GUI code and later make them public by hand to achieve what I want. But thats a pain. I have to handcraft a portion whenever I need to re-design the UI. What I tried to do: I used the variable identifier to make the text box public. Now how can I access the text box from the Main class? I think I need the component generated in a public method as well. I am new to Java. Any helps? Here's the sample classes: The UI (uiFrame.java) /* * To change this template, choose Tools | Templates * and open the template in the editor. */ /* * uiFrame.java * * Created on Jun 3, 2010, 9:33:15 PM */ package barcode; import java.util.logging.Level; import java.util.logging.Logger; import javax.swing.JFileChooser; import javax.swing.UIManager; import javax.swing.UnsupportedLookAndFeelException; import net.sourceforge.barbecue.output.OutputException; /** * * @author masnun */ public class uiFrame extends javax.swing.JFrame { /** Creates new form uiFrame */ public uiFrame() { try { try { // Set cross-platform Java L&F (also called "Metal") UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName()); } catch (ClassNotFoundException ex) { Logger.getLogger(uiFrame.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); } catch (InstantiationException ex) { Logger.getLogger(uiFrame.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); } catch (IllegalAccessException ex) { Logger.getLogger(uiFrame.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); } catch (UnsupportedLookAndFeelException ex) { Logger.getLogger(uiFrame.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); } } finally { } initComponents(); } /** This method is called from within the constructor to * initialize the form. * WARNING: Do NOT modify this code. • c++, win 32 , Erase text using TextOut or DrawText [on hold]

    - by XXXXX
How to erase the inputted character on the window and to write the another one on its place??? Say, for example, d d d d was inputted, I want to redraw it to d j j f I'm trying to do this in the following way: TextOut(hdc,rect.right,rect.top,(LPCWSTR)" ",2); DrawText( hdc, (LPCWSTR)str, -1, &rect, DT_SINGLELINE | DT_NOCLIP ) ; or DrawText( hdc, (LPCWSTR)" ", -1, &rect, DT_SINGLELINE | DT_NOCLIP ) ; DrawText( hdc, (LPCWSTR)str, -1, &rect, DT_SINGLELINE | DT_NOCLIP ) ; Anyway, some characters are redrawn, and in some cases(f, j,i characters) the junks are seen(one character is just drawn on another). I haven't set the SetBkMode to transparent. What to do? Thanks much in advance!!!

  • GestureListener's fling method doesn't get called

    - by nosferat
I'm using SimpleGestureDetector from the libgdx-users Wiki as my InputProcessor. I set it in the created() method: Gdx.input.setInputProcess(new SimpleDirectionGestureDetector(charController)); charController is my class which implements the DirectionListener interface defined in the SimpleDirectionGestureDetector class and it is responsible for moving the player character. However the character doesn't change direction when I'm performing a fling action in any direction. I've checked and the fling() method in the SimpleDirectionGesture class doesn't get called and I have no idea why, since everything seems good. What am I doing wrong?

  • RPG Item processing

    - by f00b4r
I started working on an item system for my (first) game, and I'm having a problem conceptualizing how it should work. Since Items can produce a bunch of potentially non-standard actions (revive a character vs increasing some stat) or have use restrictions (can only revive if a character is dead). For obvious reasons, I don't want to create a new Item class for every item type. What is the best way to handle this? Should I make a handful of item types (field modifiers, status modifiers, )? Is it normal to script item usage? Could (should?) this be combined with the above mentioned solution (have a couple of different sub item types, make special case items usage scripted)? Thanks.

  • Attaching new animations onto skeleton via props, a good idea?

    - by Cardin
I'm thinking of coding a game with an idea of mine. I've coded 2D games before, but I'm new to 3D programming, so I'd like to ask if this idea of mine is feasible or out of my depth. I'm making a game where there are many different characters for the player to choose from (JRPG style). So to save time, I have an idea of creating many different varied characters using a completely naked body mesh and animation skeleton, standardised across all characters. For example, by placing different hair, boots, armor props on the character mesh, new characters can be formed. Kinda like playing dress-up with a barbie doll. I'm thinking this can be done by having a bone on the prop that I can programmically attach to the main mesh. Also, I plan to have some props add new animations to the base skeleton, so equipping some particular props would give it new attack, damage, idle animations. This is because I can't expect the character to have the same swinging animation if he had a big sword or an axe. I think this might be possible if the prop has its own instance of the animation skeleton with just only the new animations, and parenting the base body mesh to this new skeleton. So all the base body mesh has are just the basic animations, other animations come from the props. My concerns are, 1) the props might not attach to the mesh properly and jitter a lot, 2) since prop and body are animated differently, the props and base mesh will cause visual artefacts, like the naked thighs showing through the pants when the character walks, 3) a custom pipeline have to be developed to export skeletons without mesh, and also to attach the base body mesh to a new skeleton during runtime in the game. So my question: are these features considered 'easy' to code? Or am I trying to do something few have ever succeeded with on their own? It feels like all these can be done given enough time and I know I definitely have to do a bit of bone matrix calculations, but I really don't want to drag out the development timeline unnecessarily from coding mathematically intense things or analyzing how to parse 3D export formats. I'm currently only at the Game Design stage, so if these features aren't a good idea, I can simply change the design of the game. (Unrelated to question) I could always, as last resort, have the characters have predetermined outfit and weapon selections so as to animate everything manually.

  • What is prefered stratigies for cross browser and multiple styled table in CSS

    - by jitendra
in default css what should i predefined for <table>, td, th , thead, tbody, tfoot I have to work in a project there are so many tables with different color schemes and different type of alignment like in some table , i will need to horizontally align data of cell to right, sometime left, sometime right. same thing for vertical alignment, top, bottom and middle. some table will have thin border on row , some will have thick (same with column border). Some time i want to give different background color to particular row or column or in multiple row or column. So my question is: What code should i keep in css default for all tables and how to handle table with different style using ID and classes in multiple pages. I want to do every presentational thing with css. How to make ID classes for everything using semantic naming ? Which tags related to table can be useful?

  • What are the key "connectors" for animation creation?

    - by qaisjp
    I'm creating an animation "engine" for a 2D game which loads a *.2dped file to load a character (it's body part positions, height, length of arm etc), and then a *.2difp to manipulate the body part positions. I'd like to know what the key body parts (bones, I mean) I should allow to be manipulated. My current list, sorted by ID's: 1: BONE_PELVIS1 2: BONE_PELVIS 3: BONE_SPINE1 4: BONE_UPPERTORSO 5: BONE_NECK 6: BONE_HEAD2 7: BONE_HEAD1 8: BONE_HEAD 21: BONE_RIGHTUPPERTORSO 22: BONE_RIGHTSHOULDER 23: BONE_RIGHTELBOW 24: BONE_RIGHTWRIST 25: BONE_RIGHTHAND 26: BONE_RIGHTTHUMB 31: BONE_LEFTUPPERTORSO 32: BONE_LEFTSHOULDER 33: BONE_LEFTELBOW 34: BONE_LEFTWRIST 35: BONE_LEFTHAND 36: BONE_LEFTTHUMB 41: BONE_LEFTHIP 42: BONE_LEFTKNEE 43: BONE_LEFTANKLE 44: BONE_LEFTFOOT 51: BONE_RIGHTHIP 52: BONE_RIGHTKNEE 53: BONE_RIGHTANKLE 54: BONE_RIGHTFOOT It's currently made to support real people, but am I going too accurate for a 2D character?
