• Random/Procedural vs. Previously Made Level Generation

  I am making a game (called "Glory") that is a top-down explorer game, and am wondering what the advantages/disadvantages of using random/procedural generation vs. pre-made levels are. There seems to be few that i can think of, other than the fact that items may be a problem to distribute in randomly generated terrain, and that the generated terrain may look weird. The downside to previously made levels is that I would need to make a level editor, though. I cannot decide what is better to use.

  I was initially drawn to Ubuntu, simply due to the fact that you could completely customize your computer to how you would like to use it. I was wondering how everyone's desktops look, and what mods they use to get it to look the way it does. I believe this leads you to be introduced a new myriad of applications like: tilda, terminator, and more. Here is my desktop :) very plain but I am hoping to see it change. • What modelling technique do you use for your continuous design?

  Together with my teammates, I'm trying to self-learn XP and apply its principles. We're successfully working in TDD and happily refactoring our code and design. However we're having problems with the overall view of the design of the project. Lately we were wondering what would be the "good" practices for an effective continuous design of the code. We're not strictly seeking the right model, like CRC cards, communication diagrams, etc., instead we're looking for a technique to constantly collaborate on the high level view of the system (not too high though). I'll try to explain myself better: I'm actually interested in the way CRC cards are used to brainstorm a model and I would mix them with some very rough UML diagrams (that we already use). However, what we're looking for are some principles for deciding when, how and how much to model during our iterations. Have you any suggestion on this matter? For example, when your teammates and you know you need a design session and how your meetings work?

• How can I make a collection of mini-games in XNA where the user can download packs of minigames and the main .exe can run them without being altered?

  I'm currently making a PC game in XNA. It's actually a collection of mini-games (there's 3 mini-games at the moment) however I plan to make and add more, in downloadable 'packs'. My question is, what's the best way to achieve this? Currently my thoughts are: Create a 'game' interface Build games to this interface but create them as .dlls Have the main .exe file scan a directory and load in the .dlls at runtime. I've not messed around with the idea much, but I know there are applications at-least that use this plug-in approach (Notepad++ seems to), but I'm not sure of any games that do (although I'm sure they must exist). However it seems that this is a problem that has been solved previously, so I'm wondering if there's any form of established best-practice.

• Code review vs pair programming

  I was wondering what is the general idea about code review and pair programming. I do have my own opinion but I'd like to hear from somebody else as well. Here are a few questions, please give me your opinion even on some of the point First of all are you aware of way to measure the effectiveness of this practices? Do you think that if you pair program, code reviews are not necessary or it's still good to have them both? Do you think anybody can do code review or maybe is better done by seniors only? In terms of productivity do you think it suffers from pairing all the times or you will eventually get in back in the long run? Thanks!

• Is Perforce as good at merging as DVCSs?

  I've heard that Perforce is very good at merging, I'm guessing this has to do with that it tracks changes in the form of changelists where you can add differences across several files in a single blow. I think this implies Perforce gathers more metadata and therefore has more information to do smarter merging (at least smarter than Subversion, being Perforce centralized). Since this is similar to how Mercurial and Git handle changes (I know DVCSs track content rather than files), I was wondering if somebody knew what were the subtle differences that makes Perforce better or worse than a DVCS like Mercurial or Git.

• How can I work out how many IP addresses there are in a given range?

  I'm wondering if there is a formula to work out the amount of IP addresses in a given range. I have a system that takes either a single IP address or a start and and end IP address: A single one might be: 145.16.23.241 A range might be: 145.16.23.122 - 145.16.23.144 The people inputting these aren't technical, nor are they receiving these details from technical people, so suggesting using CIDR notation isn't an answer for me. I want to be able to highlight that when entering a range such as: 122.100.10.12 - 128.10.200.140 it might not actually be a range and rather 2 singular IP addresses since such a range would comprise of x (large number of) IP addresses. Is there a basic formula to help me highlight this?

• What are good words for defining multiples?

  In databases you might take about one-to-many. This means there's one thing that maps to zero or more others. In this kind of style I'm looking for words that define min/max amounts of things. So far, I have: min max one 1 1 many 0 infinite optional 0 1 ??? 1 infinite Is there a single word that fits '???' to mean more than one? Do you have better alternatives for 'optional'? I'm wondering if there are any conventional names for those concepts?

• How do you cope mentally with one very long piece of work

  This is my first games industry job and my task is to take out one major game component and put in a newer one. So far it's been 5 weeks, and I'm still just staring at errors. I think it could be months before it's at the point that it can compile. It's really getting me down. I'm just changing things over, I'm not really writing anything myself. it's just endless. I fix a thousand errors and nine thousand take their place. I'm sure this must be a common thing, so I was just wondering, how do you cope with this? It doesn't seem like I can break it down into little chunks at all.

• How to camel-case where consecutive words have numbers?

  Just wondering if anybody has a good convention to follow in this corner-corner-corner case. I really use Java but figured the C# folks might have some good insight too. Say I am trying to name a class where two consecutive words in the class name are numeric (note that the same question could asked about identifier names). Can't get a great example, but think of something like "IEEE 802 16 bit value". Combining consecutive acronyms is doable if you accept classnames such as HttpUrlConnection. But it seriously makes me throw up a little to think of naming the class IEEE80216BitValue. If I had to pick, I'd say that's even worse than IEEE802_16BitValue which looks like a bad mistake. For small numbers, I'd consider IEEE802SixteenBitValue but that doesn't scale that well. Anyone out there have a convention? Seems like Microsoft's naming guidelines are the only ones that describe acronym naming in enough detail to get the job done, but nobody has addressed numbers in classnames.

• ETL Software Research Question

  Where I work, we use an in-house ETL solution that's homegrown and has been around for 5-10 years. I'm still new to my data analysis job, but I was wondering about the ETL tools that are out there. This is a new area for me. My situation, and job, is basically digging in a set of databases (DB2, SQL2005, Citrix, Ancient Cobol Database with a SQL Wrapper on top, MySQL, etc). Gather the desired information. combine the different datasets into one set. output into a file of choice (CSV, Tab Separated, Pipe Separated, XLS, etc). FTP to customer. I guess what my real question is, given my job, what are some good ETL suites that I can look at and compare to my in-house tools? This is more to research some other options. Ultimately, I'd either suggest a new solution or get options/ideas to improve our current app.

• Application to organize / manage installed networks

  I was wondering if there is a Application where you can organize networks. I mean if you have installed some networks you have to note every pc's name, his ip-address and so on. Is there a Application where you can manage it? I saw the monitoring tools but that is not exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe I didnt explain me well, after all my englis his not so good :) For example if I install many different networks I write in a book how I configured them. I write pc-name ip-address ip-gateway ip-broadcast and so on for each network. It will be great if I can do it in a program to organize it well, and for example it gives me a node view of the network.

• What issues are there for doing freelance work?

• Can I make query strings produce separate pages?

  I have a profile page with a URL like so: localhost/profile.php/?username=Bob I was wondering, if I had a separate <title> which changed according to the username, would they produce separate pages in the google search results? How do I tell Google to only use the username string or does it search within the title? On a similar note, how would I create a separate page with the username like so: localhost/bob instead of a query string like facebook does. Do that make a new file for each user?

• Efficient way to check for changes to the contents of folders

  I am creating an application that maintains a database of files of a certain type in a given folder (and all subfolders) Initially the program will recurse the folders and add any file it finds of that type to the database. I want the application to have the ability to re-scan the folder and add any files that were not there the last time the folders were scanned. It can't use the date created property of the file because there is a high chance of a file being added to the folders that isn't a new file. I am wondering what the most efficient way of doing this is, and if there is a way that doesn't involve checking each file is in the database already (which, if there are 5000 files would mean 5000 queries of a list 5000 items in size, or 25 million 'checks' for the sql engine to perform) I suppose a more specific question to acheive the same goal would be - is there a property of a file (in Microsoft Windows) that will reliably tell you when that file arrived in that folder.

• Good PPA for ffmpeg

  Its annoying that the default ffmpeg in ubuntu's repositories is outdated and hobbled for legal reasons, however, there's a great page on the forums that walks you through building it from scratch: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095 (I also add in support for --enable-libdc1394 --enable-libgsm --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libschroedinger --enable-libspeex when I build, which is nice, but not essential.) Anyway, I'm getting set to setup a computer lab running ubuntu for a multimedia class I'm teaching, and I was wondering if there was PPA out there that did something similar to what is available when building from scratch. The things I absolutely need from it are up-to-date libxvid, libx264, libfaac, and libmp3lame support plus the un-encumbered stuff (vorbis, theora, vpx). Is there a PPA out there that provides something like this?

• Need to isnatll windows 7 on dual boot machine

  I have dual boot configured with Windows 7 (32bit) and Ubuntu 12.04(64bit). I installed Ubuntu after windows, now my windows is corrupt due to some virus and I need to reinstall it. Currently when I start my PC, grub loader comes up and I need to select Ubuntu or Windows. I was wondering how can I install windows again and still have my Ubuntu install? Is there a way to do this? I am just wondering about that, because everyone knows that they can get this software running for free (if it is done illegally). Why don't they just use a cracked version?   I have a client who currently runs a venue and has ticket purchases made available through a third party. The way the site currently works is that there is a standard href in the nav menu to the ticket purchasing site. <a href'http://example.com/events'>Events</a> <a href'http://example.com/about'>About</a> <a href'https://someticketvendor.com/myclient?blah'>Tickets</a> They claim that they want to improve their SEO by appearing to integrate the ticket pages into their site. Having spoken to the ticket vendor, they only offer integration through iframes which is just horrible. I don't really know much about SEO but I'm wondering if I can create an htaccess rule to have http://example.com/tickets forward to href'https://someticketvendor.com/myclient?blah Are they are any negative SEO implications to doing this? Is there a better way this could be done?

• Sprite/Tile Sheets Vs Single Textures

  I'm making a race circuit which is constructed using various textures. To provide some background, I'm writing it in C++ and creating quads with OpenGL to which I assign a loaded .raw texture too. Currently I use 23 500px x 500px textures of which are all loaded and freed individually. I have now combined them all into a single sprite/tile sheet making it 3000 x 2000 pixels seems the number of textures/tiles I'm using is increasing. Now I'm wondering if it's more efficient to load them individually or write extra code to extract a certain tile from the sheet? Is it better to load the sheet, then extract 23 tiles and store them from one sheet, or load the sheet each time and crop it to the correct tile? There seems to be a number of way to implement it...   I have a question concerning the life cycle management of a/multiple project(s), more specific to the advantages/disadvantages of using technologies such as Maven. Currently we work in a continuous-integration environment but lots of things still need to be manually performed (dependency management, deploying, setting up documentation, generating stats, ...). My impression is that this approach often leads to errors, miscommunications or things just are forgotten. I know and have used Maven in the past but in smaller environments and I was always really enthusiastic about it. But I was wondering if someone could share some insights, experiences, pros, contras, ... about the use of Maven (or similar technology) in larger environments and for multiple projects. I would like to use the suggestions made here to start the debate about moving to the next level in project management!

• Application starts as Terminal but not as a Desktop entry

  I just installed SQL Anywhere 12 and can start Sybase Central from the terminal with the command line below without errors: /opt/sqlanywhere12/bin32/scjview However, when I try to start it from a desktop entry I am receiving two error messages that could be something incorrectly defined in the desktop below: #!/usr/bin/env xdg-open [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Type=Application Terminal=false Icon[en_US]=gnome-panel-launcher Name[en_US]=Sybase Central Exec=/opt/sqlanywhere12/bin32/scjview Comment[en_US]= Name=Sybase Central Comment= Icon=gnome-panel-launcher Here are the error messages: (unable to post the error images) cannot find libsyblib610_r.so cannot find libulscutil12.so Since the application can be successfully started from a terminal window I was wondering how I could have it setup as a desktop entry as well.
